Rachel R: This is about the third time I have seen your review so I decided it was finally time to comment. They print lowercase on cakes meant for children so that the kids can read them, not because they are incapable of writing normally.

I used to love Bethel Bakery until I ordered my son's first birthday cake from them(July 2010). I drove 45 mins. in the car to order the cake and to take a picture that I had for thedecorator to follow. The cake was a pretty easy design for a "Prince" theme in shades of blues and a little yellow. I paid $87.00 for a PURPLE cake, that looked like my preschooler had written on. "Happy 1st Birthday" was printed and UNCAPITALIZED. It looked like they ran out of room so my son's name was scrunched to fit. The piping and the crown on the cake were uneven and off centered. It basically looked like a cake from someone's kitchen.
My friend had the same Prince theme, got the cake from Costco for $17.00 and it was cuter than my $87.00 one.
The cake itself was fresh and able to be eaten. When I complained they credited me $25.00 . Needless to say, they are not going to see me again. Wasn't worth the travel time or the money. I now agree with the other reviews and I think they are overrated. I was very disappointed and I don't think that I am difficult to please, I just can't relive my son's first birthday and I'm embarrassed to even put the pictures of his cake in a photo album!

I worked at Bethel Bakery while in High School in the late 80's. This family owned bakery is hands down, the best bakery I have ever known. They are famous for their cakes and I never visit the 'burgh without buying at least one. Their butter cream icing is simply the best...other favorites include apricot roles, jelly tea cookies, Hungarian Pull Apart coffee cake, and their cupcakes. My local friends still have Bethel Bakery cake for family birthdays and I am so jealous!

Bethel Bakery is the place to go for all of your baked goods needs. The cakes have always been very fresh and very delicious. My favorite is their whipped cream icing. Their cake designs are always new and innovated. They were the firsts to offer picture cakes. When ordering a cake a few years ago for my sons birthday, they were able to create a wonderful Rescue Heroes design.

I wouldn't think of getting a cake from any other place. I like the ones with the filling (strawberry) and the french buttercream icing. My mouth is watering as I type this!

PROS: Excellent cakes
CONS:

We ordered our wedding cake from Bethel Bakery and were so pleased with it. It looked and tasted exactly how I hoped it would and can't wait to eat the top teir for our 1st anniversary next year! I am not able to visit the bakery much as they aren't too close to where I live, but I would readily recommend this bakery for a wedding cake - they truly did a wonderful job. The cake was fresh and delicious.

This bakery is a very popular place in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh for a good reason. They carry a very large selection of all types of baked goods, and everything is clean and displayed attractively. They are known especially for their delicious birthday and special occasion cakes. Although they are often very busy, the staff waits on customers very pleasantly and very efficiently. Whatever kind of baked goods you want, Bethel Bakery will probably have them, and they will be delicious.

Message from Bethel Bakery

Since Bethel Bakery opened for business in the 1955 in the south hills section of Pittsburgh, generations of patrons have made their way to the shop for the bakery’s signature pastries, cookies, coffeecakes and one-of-a-kind cakes.

With a number of years of bakery experience, a stint in the Navy behind him and a small inheritance, Morris Walsh, with characteristic determination, made his dream of owning his own bakery a reality when he and a partner opened for business during the Eisenhower administration. While his business partner left the venture within a few months, Morris soon gained another associate, his future wife, Anna.

Together, the couple built the boutique bakery into one of the busiest and most beloved purveyors of high-quality baked goods in western Pennsylvania. And they did it while raising seven children, all of whom would eventually work in the family business.

Today, a second generation of the Walsh family manages the bakery. John and his wife, Chris, took over day-to-day operations in 1991and expanded the already extensive inventory of baked goods, but Morris and Anna’s legacy of exceptional quality and customer service lives on.

People travel for miles for a taste of Bethel Bakery’s signature buttercream icing and discriminating brides across the region wouldn’t dream of celebrating their nuptials with anything but a hand-crafted, custom-designed Bethel Bakery cake decorated by one of the shop’s talented designers.

In 2006, Bethel Bakery’s iconic status in the region was recognized by award-winning documentary filmmaker Rick Sebak, who featured the bakery in his WQED program, “What Makes Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh.”

In an era driven by convenience and competition from mega-markets and chain stores, Bethel Bakery has endured because it is far more than just a retailer of baked goods—it is an memorable destination experience and a nostalgic reminder of the charms of independent bakeries that were once part of the fabric of every community.
