We are very pleased that P.E.T.S. is equipped to handle exotics, like our pet guinea pigs, as well as cats and dogs. It is always a horrible feeling to know you need emergency care for your pet after normal vet clinic hours, and I'm sure the extreme emotion from such events explains a lot about the negative reviews found here.
A visit to P.E.T.S. is more expensive than one to a regular vet, and the staff has a set procedure in which they tell you that right upfront. Despite the seemingly cold admission procedures, we have found the staff there to be very warm and compassionate. You do need to be your pet's advocate and ask questions and make sure you're clear on all the information, but that's true of any medical circumstance.
Each time we have gone to P.E.T.S. we have felt that by doing so we did everything we could for our pet in the situation. If your pet needs emergency care during the night or on a weekend, this is the right place to go in the area.

We've been to PETS on several occasions for emergency services for dogs, and I have never been disappointed. The staff is very professional and Doctors' very knowledgeable. The price is a little more expensive than my regular veterinarian, but I also realize I am paying for emergency care in the middle of the night.

If you care about your pet at all, DO NOT BRING HIM/HER HERE!On a Sunday afternoon, our dachshund was hit by a car. Our regular vet was not open, so we took him to P.E.T.S. We assumed that they would be able to help him, since this was an emergency, and they have the word emergency in their title. Well, you know what they say when you assume things. We arrived there at about 1pm, with him on a backboard, since we weren't sure what his injuries were. He was taken back for x-rays, blood work, and an examination. He was put on pain medication and fluids to prevent shock. He was weighed for some unknown reason (possibly to determine how much medication to administer), but he was placed on the scale in a sitting position, without knowing the extent of his injuries. We waited for at least a half an hour, and when Pamela Datsko, DVM (yeah, right) came out, she said: "The blood work and x-rays show no internal damage to his organs, and thank goodness, there is no injury to his back." Then she tells us he has a fractured leg, fractured pelvis and a dislocated hip, none of which were an emergency situation. Meaning, they didn't require treatment at this time. She gave us the option, to leave him there over night, and take him to our vet in the morning, so he could tell us what to do with him, or we could take him home, and take him to our vet the next day. They would give him pain medication, and we could bring him back to P.E.T.S. if he had any discomfort. We decided to take him home with us. My father offered to get the backboard out of our car, but the technician said that would be "too difficult to maneuver it through the doorway," so she carried him out to our car, on her own. They gave us his x-rays, and a bill for almost $700.The next day, we took him to our vet at about 11am, the earliest he could see us. We gave him the x-rays, and he left the room to view them, for about 5-10 minutes. We could hear him talking to other people outside the room. He came back in, and said immediately, that he would not be able to treat our dog, because he believed that our dog's back was broken and needed to be evaluated by a specialist. We asked him were to go, and he told us to go to the Veterinary Referral Center in Malvern, as soon as we could, because our dog's injuries were EXTREMELY SERIOUS!We arrived at VRC at 2pm, they evaluated him, and within an hour told us they were prepping him for surgery. That night, he had back surgery, the most important of all his injuries. The next day, he had surgery on his fractured leg. When the surgeon called us that night, she said the surgery was successful, but when she opened his leg, all his ligaments were torn, which P.E.T.S. did NOT tell us (the surgeon reattached them). He rested the next day, and the day after that, he had surgery on his dislocated hip. After all was said and done, he was in the hospital for 9 days, was on 5 separate medications, and we spent over $10,000 for all his surgeries. We do not mind the cost of his surgeries. We mind the fact, that we brought our dog to an EMERGENCY center, and were told by a place that lists Emergency Surgeries and Radiology, as part of their services, that our dog's injuries were not an emergency; that his x-ray showed that his back was NOT broken. Well, guess what? IT WAS! That's right!! You, Pamela Datsko, DVM, can't even read a damn x-ray! And we are so lucky that he wasn't injured even more, because that fat-ass technician was too lazy to use the backboard that WE brought with us! Thank God for Jana Norris, DVM at VRC in Malvern. She and our regular vet had no problem seeing on the x-ray that his back was broken, and knew what an emergency it was.So, if your animal is injured, DO NOT GO TO P.E.T.S! Go to Veterinary Referral Center in Malvern, if you can, or anywhere else, just not P.E.T.S. Unless, you want your animal put to sleep, since while we were there, 3 animals were taken back and put to sleep. That's probably the only thing they can't screw-up.

OH MY - where to start! We took our brittney Chandler to PETs after a surgery which was not performed properly to begin with at Banfield Hospital at Petsmart.... they didn't give him a blood transfusion... they didn't feel it was necessary because we didn't know what kind of tumor he had....and it was borderline as far as needing one...anyway when we took him to PETS we rushed from Banfield to get there and it was 10 minutes before they opened. I pressed the button and they really acted like we bothered them....saying they didn't punch in yet...right then I looked at my mom and was like WHAT??? Isn't this a pet emergency hospital??? Shouldn't they be more motivated??? Then they were like just carry him in I was like don't you have a stretcher? We don't want to pull at his incision well they were like "fine" and they came out and the one tech said oh he isn't heavy at all I will get him myself ...then it was major attitude from there...my mom was like hey we have been through hell and back I really need you to be nice here...It is $1,000 a day to stay there for 12 hours you may get lucky if it is over the weekend when they are there all weekend. They had to give him two blood transfusions to get his levels up and then they did take care of him...but with the undertone...you should end this he has no chance ect...why are you making us work...Chandler was very fortunate to get the care of Dr. Lewis during daytime on the weekend...he was matter of fact and knew what he was doing...experienced said what he was experiencing was normal for after a surgury like chandler had he had to have his spleen removed...DID NOT revert to well you should really think about the future he will die one day anyway just end it now! It was a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, he does not work there full time and different vets shift in and out of there... Chandler had to be moved on Monday morning at 8 AM because they close then and do not reopen until 6 PM that day...we took him back to Banfield because they were familar with the situation and we could have them hook up the IV and they would be able to monitor him that day. During the day he slept alot which we were not concerned about because at PETs they have him back where they take care of emergencies and it was not a place to rest at all...they wanted him to go back to PETS and we were like no his vitals are good he is not drinking because you still have the IV in him take it out and we will see we are not taking him back to PETS the end...we took him home the Bandfield vet left the IV cathiter in and the urine cathiter in because she swore he would have to go back to PETS...well wouldn't you know Chandler drank when he got home and he then ate. He kept it down and slept very well. The next day he was up and walking around very carefully because the cathiter was still in but he was eating and drinking all day..my sister stayed with him to monitor him...when i met my mom at her house to take over care he got up and walked to the door like he does when he has to go out we took him out and he pooped solid good poop! His urine in the bag was clear...We called PETS when they opened at 6PM because Banfield is closed Tuesdays meaning if we did take him somewhere it would have to be another vet...they said sure if he is doing that well we need to take out the cathiters no need for leaving it in for risk of infection we took him in and we were fortunate enough to get Dr. Huber the staff acted as if we were lying about his improvement and couldn't believe he was doing as well as we said. We even gave him something to drink and he licked his mouth after he took a drink like he always does and the tech said...oh what is wrong are you nausious...I had enough of the negativity about Chandler !He went all day without pain medication and ate, drank, pooped, peed, they checked his vitals and they were good...WHAT THE F*&^! We had enough of those techs and said we didn't want them touching him anymore if you are going to think the darn worst then get the hell away. I said we are not ending his life PERIOD. There is no need now we haven't even gotten the biopsy reports back to even say it is cancer...AHHH! and he is recovering whether you believe or not! Finally Dr. Huber was able to get the cathiters out and gave us some ointment for his incision. Chandler is doing great...no pain medicine and he is recovering just fine from his surgery...if it is cancer we will go from there but damn give the dog a chance and do your job!

Something is wrong when how well your pet is cared for depends on how lucky you get when you have your emergency. Quality of care at P.E.T.S. runs the gamut and depends on the luck of the draw and who is on duty when you walk in the door. They are currently the only choice at night and on weekends, would be nice is someone else had night and weekend hours.

P.E.T.S. is the only game in town if you have a problem with your pet in "off hours" and it shows. With the exception of one vet, I've seen animals neglected, questions from concerned pet owners rudely blown off and a general unsympathetic attitude. Animals and clients suffer. Prices are ridiculous and prevent some good pet owners trying to do the right thing to get help for their pets.

If your love your furry family member, DO NOT bring him/her there. Find another way. Travel to another county if you have to. While the doctor may be competent, the staff is absolutely horrible.
1. They are rude and think of you and your pet as a distraction.
2. They will insult and demean you.
3. They will intentionally neglect service to your pet because it interrupts their playtime or tv or if they do not feel like it or if they do not like you.
4. Never ask them a question about anything. They will huff and puff and storm out of the room. Then, since you had the audacity to ask a question, they will not like you and therefore ignore and neglect care for your pet.
I lost a beloved furry family member while under their care. I have found out since then that there are many others in Lancaster who have had similar fates. My pet was in the care for a common problem that required surgery. I was told by the doctor afterward that everything went routinely from anesthesia to the procedure. The problem arose when no tech was around when my pet came out of anesthesia. The tech neglected him. All that was needed to have kept him alive was someone to pet him or rubbed him with a towel to keep him breathing. We have techs that do that for people. This tech was being spiteful because she had been reported as rude to the doctor. Even the autopsy showed every organ was strong and healthy. There were no other emergencies at the time. So he had to die because the tech was being spiteful and hateful because she did not like me.
So, PET OWNERS BEWARE OF P.E.T.S!!!!!!
PROS: The veterinarian
CONS: THE STAFF THE STAFF THE STAFF THE STAFF THE STAFF THE STAFF THE STAFF

The first question you will be asked...
1) Show us the MONEY
The second thing they will say....
2) Let's put him/her to sleep
Then the staff can get back to watching TV in the back room.
This has happened several times with different animals and thankfully, we have been able to travel long distances out of the county where real assistance was available but the animals suffered longer than needed, since PETS was not interested. (BTW - all of our animals are alive and healthy now)
PROS: Great for "Routine Emergencies" depending on the staff on duty at the time
CONS: Quick to say "put himto sleep", too $-oriented, not enough compassion

I had to bring my dog to PETS twice. The first time, she became very ill and eventually needed surgery to remove something she had eaten (obviously not food!). The second time she was treated for hives and a rash. Both were over weekend hours when our regular vet could not see her. The second visit probably could have waited, but the first time probably saved our beloved pet. She received caring treatment.

The Pet Emergency Treatment Center of Lancaster County is really a very needed facility. I have used thier services on several occasions when my pet was very ill or recovering from surgery. Prices are a little steep but then all medical prices are just up there. The staff was always very compassionate and caring.

They really helped our little pooch out. She got pretty sick after eating something really hot. Our vets was not open so we called them and took her right in. They were able to get her to to stop getting sick and she was better by morning. They were very nice about it to. Told us what we could do next time it happened to avoid her getting that sick. They were just expensive.
PROS: nice, helpful
CONS: expensive
