The overall atmosphere of the salon is not horrible, but there is a major lack of professionalism on the part of the owners. \r

Firstly, the receptionist must be a family member, or a close family friend, because I cannot imagine that

This shop is the worst. Talk about bad attitudes and professionalism that's where you'll find it. Tamala and Abeena (the owner) attitude stinks. Started there and is soooooooo super happy I stopped going there and found me a nice place in Germantown. Jamal, such a nice guy but I still can't understand how he manages to tolerate the wife of his however to each is own. They let you sit for hours and all they do is chat and mess up your appointment. This place disgust me and almost every customers leave after they find out the real person behind the fake smile, smh. For $80.00, I should be getting far better treatment than what they can offer me. Now I pay $50.00 and is happy than ever. Good riddance.

It has been a while since I left the Brownstone. When I first started going there I taken by the quality of attention and care that was given to my hair and me. But things quickly slipped downhill, or should I say plummeted. I own a consulting company and I travel a lot for business. So most of the time I would call for an appointment well in advance for maint and special occasions. I had my hair done there for my wedding. My stylist was SUPER late (2 hours) although she know it was my wedding day, but I was stuck. Trying to give them another opportunity for redemption I made additional appointments and the same thing happened without any apologies or explanations. The last straw was when I made an appointment for a few services (i.e. color, deep conditioning and and updo) for my son's graduation. I implicitly let them know that time was of the essence. They assured me that they would be there on time. I even called the day before to remind them that I was coming in from DC to my AM hair appointment in Philly, then had to drive back to Delaware, and then drive back out to Philly in order to catch my 2pm flight down to Atl. I arrived at my appointment a little early but they were not there. After waiting for a while I talked to the receptionist to get an update, she was so nasty (as if I was annoying her). Long story short they arrived an hour and a half later and with no explanation or apology. I went to Atl without getting my hair done. That was the last time I will ever go there. If I ever ran my business like they run theirs I would not have any clients. Not to mention that they still have not apologized. I would never recommend anyone to go there, this is not a well run business

Cons: LATE, NO RESPECT FOR THE CLIENTS TIME

.

The receptionist is cool once she warms up but I did experience the stankness. The stylists were wonderful with my hair and they really are nice people but the lateness was getting to me. I'm talking about 45 mins to 1 hour late. No matter what time my appointment was...they were late, and offered no explanation or apology. I was even scheduled to be the first client of the day and I swear they were 45 mins late getting to the salon. That happened a couple of times until I got fed up and decided to move on. If the owners read this and they are trying to figure out why people leave...LATENESS is a big problem. It shows people that you don't care and that you don't think their time is valuable. If you get the lateness under control you all would have a salon that anyone would be eager to recommend.

Pros: Knowledgeable about hair care

Cons: LATE!!! Rude about LATENESS!!!!

It's very interesting to see how all the reviews are from last year. Maybe this business had better management then. I received the worst customer service I've ever experienced in a salon. The receptionist was extremely rude. The owners one of which was to be my stylist was late. I mean she was an hour late! I don't understand this. My color job was disappointing. I am very disappointed and upset that this happened to me. I cannot recommend this place to anyone. Sorry.

I highly recommend this salon for natural hair care. I've been a client since 2000. I enjoy the feel at home welcome you receive when entering the salon. I was disappointed to read the comments referring to their receptionist. It is my opinion that she is professional, kind and caring. I have seen her assist the clients that are elderly and make provisions for clients with special needs. When I couldn't get an appointment she was always on the look out for a cancellation. I hope the perception of the receptionist from the previous bloggers hasn't left an unfavorable impression about this salon. I love the salon and it's staff, I wouldn't trust my hair care to anyone else.

I have nothing but good things to say about Brownstone. The owners are very knowlegable and courteous. They have created their natural hair care products that I absolutely adore.(feng shui organics). If your looking for a place to care for your natural hair,or if your considering going natural , then look no further. Brownstone is the place to go to.

I am a current customer of Brownstone. I love the salon and atmosphere. The customers are friendly and the owners are fantastic. I highly recommend this salon to anyone who wants to maintain their natural hair. I find them to be punctual, taking me almost as soon as I walk in the door. They are not an establishment who overbooks taking hours to get to you. They have very faithful and commited clients. The flip side to this is that it is sometimes nearly impossible to book an appointment. You can only book two appointments at a time and sometimes you have to book several weeks (a month) ahead. If you need to cancel, you may not get another appointment in that month! I love Ab and Jamaal, but I am constantly searching for another salon who can fit me in within a week or two. The problem is, I have not found one yet!!!! The receptionist is cranky but I tune her out since I am not paying her. They do not have prices written down so you have to be VERY assertive in asking about pricing before you get something done. Otherwise you could walk out with a $200 service bill.

I went to Brownstone because I was very interested in their styles and I was very excited to get a manageable natural style without permanent locs. I arrived 15mins before my appointment time. I too, was greated by a receptionist who was very abrupt and had no customer service skills whatsoever. I was never told who my stylist would be and no one introduced themselves. I looked around for a waiting area, as it was obvious that this was my first visit. I finally asked where could I sit and the receptionist motioned downstairs and just said "go downstairs". As I waited for my stylist there were at least five women who came in behind me and had all been shampooed and were very talkative. These women were obviously repeat customers who were known. After an hour, the receptionist came downstairs and I asked her how much longer because I had another appointment. I also mentioned to her that it was an hour past my appointment time. She just looked over her shoulder to me and said "Don't sweat the small stuff". My time is not "small stuff". I waited another 20 mins and decided enough was enough. I started up the steps then a young lady came down and asked if I needed my hair washed. I assumed she was my stylist, because she still did not introduce herself. Because I decided to leave, then the young lady became very apologetic. Too late. Very bad first impression. I did return a few months later because I really wanted to try the salon. The style I received lasted less than a week. Very disappointed. The owners were both present and were very nice. Very cordial and professional. I am sorry I can't say the same for their staff.

Pros: Very good hair care products, atmosphere is busy but professional, a little too much personal business going on.

Cons: The Receptionist.

I went to Brownstone Natural Hair Salon today after visiting a website that directed me to Brownstone for a particular hair care product I desired. I will start out by saying the salon appeared very neat, clean, and peaceful. The products were prominently displayed and layout of the floor was generally aesthetically pleasing.

Unfortunately, however, the receptionist soured my visit. After I was "buzzed-in" I was immediately greeted by an unwelcome and abrupt "How can I help you?" I smiled hoping to dissipate the the receptionist's unfriendly demeanor however I soon realized that she was going to continue to be caustic and abrupt so I quickly picked up my product and prepared to leave the salon. As I was leaving, another product caught my eye so I picked it up hoping to get a quick question answered so I could get out of that nasty woman's space. This time one of the proprietors was at the reception desk so when I asked a question he responded.

The proprietor (never got his name but remembered his face from the salon's website) was very kind and answered my questions thoroughly and professionally. Moreover, he was nice! The proprietor's demeanor and the salon's wide array of hair care products for curly hair are the only reasons that my rating is positive.

It's sad that an otherwise pleasant place has been spoiled by one person. I strongly recommend that they get rid of that receptionist.
