Ratings_icons Humane Society is doing a great service!

Ryan S.

My family & I just adopted a dog from this shelter. "Mack" as they knew him is a 1-3 year old Shepherd, Husky, Retriever, Chow kind of mix. We were pleased and impressed with the dog. Clearly he had been well cared for. I reiterate Janell's points below. This shelter is independent and fulfilling a much needed mission, serving a very large area, and all with limited funds & staff. The accommodations are what you would expect from an independent organization serving this mission. And, it rates much better than living on the street. Plus, it provides a centralized place for people to come see, meet & greet, and determine if one of their pets is a match. I would hope that the people that take the time to bash this "saving place" would take the same time to write a check to support this much needed service, or even volunteer. Because in the absence of this shelter, these animals would be in far worse shape. Support the shelter by adopting a pet or by donating your time.

Ratings_icons Humane Society is a great place to find a family friend

I am disagreeing whole heartedly with the majority of the reviews listed on here for LCHS. Remember, LCHS recieves zero funding from the county or the state. They are operating on the donations of caring citizens. Their employees are mostly volunteers. Of course the accomodations are not the cleanest, maybe the people seem stand off-ish, but if you walk down the runs, you see the most wonderful thing.... cage after cage of Adopted and Pending Adoption signs up...
Isn't that the most important thing?
I think it is very easy for people to judge a place like this, but they certainly aren't volunteering their own time to help.
BTW- We just adopted a beautiful dog from there, and the people were so helpful and awesome to work with. We were coming from over an hour away every chance we got to see our girl. Well worth the trip.

I called this shelter today, March 6, 2009 about a cat they have listed on pet finder. I live 3 hours from this shelter. They did not list any pertinent information about this cat on Pet finder so I called to find out. The woman I spoke with was rude and seemed not very interested in getting this cat adopted. She refused to tell me how old the cat was and said they don't weigh them. She told me I would have to drive there to fill out an application and that I could not do it on-line. Once I were to get there I am suppose to wait 24 hrs before I can adopt while they check my application references. If the cat has not been neutered, I then have to wait and let them neuter the cat she said. She wouldn't even tell me if he had been neutered. She just said if the ad did not say he was that he probably wasn't. I am upset. My cat I had for 18 yrs just passed away Christmas of 08. I am having an extremely hard time finding the type of cat I am looking for and the cat I am interested in at this shelter is what I am looking for. I don't know anything about this cat. All I know is what he looks like from a picture. I think it is complete BS! that they cant tell me over the phone how old he is or what is weight is! Why should I drive 3 hrs to find out he is older than I am looking to adopt or what if he is FELV +or something? He is so cute and I am very interested in him. I would hate to think of him being euthanized. The pet finder ad says he has been there since November.

Ratings_icons allentown humane society....aweful place

wendy l.

last year my friend was looking for a dog. we went to the humane society in allentown. first off, the poor animals...most did not have even water in their bowls much less food, the cages had urine all over the place and feces. i took donations of food, collars, some leashes, doggie sweaters, etc. when i walked into another area i saw that they had such used things for sale. i was angery, i wanted the food, snacks, bones, etc. to go to the animals their so they would have something not to be sold.
we called the humane society 2 days later aboutr the dog. they said, "hold on, let me see if it is still here." i was wondering where would it have gone? we did get the dog, apparently, it was ready to be killed but we got it in a nick of time.
it's an aweful hell hole. i feel so terrible for any animal that is there.

Ratings_icons A match made in Heaven

We just adopted our Kuma from the Humane Society. We did not encounter any of the problems others are writing about. The staff was always attentive, and respectful whenever we went in to visit the dog we were adopting.
We brought our Kuma home with us on Friday, 8/29/08.
What a WONDERFUL dog we got!!!! He is so well behaved, gets along with our other dogs, and loves being around us. Right now, he is laying at my feet.
This is the 4th dog we have adopted from the HS, and never had a problem. I would recommend anyone adopt a pet from there.

Ratings_icons piss poor shelter - disgusts me

Anonymous

There was an adorable long haired kitten that my neighbors and I fed for two weeks. The poor thing was so matted and a mess, but so lovable we just wanted to get it help. We tried to catch it, but it didn't like being caged. While I was at work my neighbors got the kitten in the carrier and took it to the shelter thinking all it needed was some love and to be cleaned up and would have been adopted. I was even going to try to adopt it. I called four days straight and they told me it was doing good and could be adopted that Saturday. Well, we went and didn't see it, got the run around, found out they "didn't have time" to clean it up and it was still a mess. We asked if we could just see it and they said no. then, they said it tried to bite a worker so it was on a 10 day bite watch, well on the tenth day I had my mom call because I just couldn't and it was already put down. Never had a chance at getting a home or love. All it ever showed me was love. I am sick and disgusted. I would strongly advise anyone not to drop any pet off there period unless they want it killed. If you want your pet to die, drop it off there and it won't be a problem for those sorry a** excuses for caring people. I think some of those people should be stuffed in small cages and see if they get aggressive at all. I have nothing more to say except what goes around comes around and I hope whoever killed that poor innocent loving kitten gets theirs real soon.

Ratings_icons Lehigh County Humane Society

I just read Angie M.'s review from 5/21/08 and I don't know what she's talking about. I adopted 2 dogs from the Lehigh County Humane Society and I can only say good things about the shelter. The staff was courteous and helpful. We spent a lot of time at the shelter, visiting the dogs daily and taking them for walks. There were times they were very busy and we had to wait a few minutes, but at no time did anyone seem disinterested in placing the animals at the shelter. The small dog kennels were very clean and the dogs themselves were clean and certainly didn't smell like Angie M. claims the cats did. This shelter has the overwhelming responsibility of taking in ALL UNWANTED and stray animals. They don't have the luxury of picking and choosing only the ones they can adopt out. The animals get exceptional medical treatment when necessary. As for allowing a "pending adoption", that is ridiculous. What if they did allow "pending adoptions" and then someone who truly want to adopt that pet comes in and can't adopt it because it's "pending", and then the "pending adoption" falls through because they decide they don't want the pet--what happens to the animal then? I think the LCHS does a great job and also has to carry the added burden that none of the other shelters have to contend with.

Ratings_icons Not helpful, don't care

Angie M.

I stated interest in a dog at the Lehigh County Humane Society, they couldn't care less. The woman behind the counter was more interested in speaking with her friends on the phone than she was interested in finding homes for the dogs. I asked to put a pending adoption on the dog, "We don't do that" then turned her back to get on the phone - again, while I stood in front of her with several more questions. These people don't have a clue. It was a frustrating and dissatisfying experience. I'll travel further to go to a shelter interested in finding homes for the animals. I cannot recommend at all, never, never, never.

Ratings_icons Dirty

Breeana C.

This place has such a dirty rate of cats. All, every single one, is terribly dirty some of them even had some dandruff in their fur. They all smelled like a bath was far beyond the scale of imaginable and their cages had litter boxes that didn't even have an inch of litter in them. Also when I took out a few cats the front desk was extremely rude to me and annoyed that I wanted to see so many. It was my right to find a cat that was healthy looking and not so filthy. Every time I took one out they all bit and nipped me as I tried to play with them they did this because they are never out of their cages. They all wanted to run around and exercise. Its horrible how they treat these creatures. Do not leave your animal with them instead adopt one so you can take them out of this horrid care.

Ratings_icons This Shelter...

D F.

My cat was killed at this shelter Monday. We called the shelter about 2 weeks ago telling them that we lost our cat. We described him to the shelter who told us that they would call if they had any news. Thursday we found a woman who took our cat to the shelter after she found him a street away from our house. When we went yesterday to pick up our cat they told us that they put him to sleep for being "aggressive". All animals have a right to be a little aggressive when they are in a strange place with strange people. My cat was never aggressive at home. My cat was groomed and obviously taken care of. If they would have checked the lost cat cards they would have made a match and my cat would not be dead. Also, the woman who brought him in called daily to make sure he was still alive. Each day they told her that he was still there. She called Tuesday and Thursday and they told her he was still alive. They killed him Monday. My cat was murdered by these people. If anyone else has a story relating to mine, please email Lehighpump@aol.com. thank you so much.

Ratings_icons Everyone Should Know

LCHS is a private corporation who has over 2.8 million in assets including real estate. They are an extremely high kill shelter who chooses to kill, they have a choice. They answer to no one, they are not county, city, state or federally funded. They hold a contract for the cruelty officer and that is it. There are no laws requiring anyone to take stray animals to LCHS.Please adopt and save an animal from LCHS, you will be saving a life! Please do not take any animals to LCHS unless you want them to be killed. If you want them to be killed then do them a favor and take them to a licensed vet who will euthanize them correctly. They will not die on a cold concrete floor in a cold metal cage at the hands of just any kennel worker, if you take them to a licensed vet.
