Dark, boisterous, Parisian-style bistro. Robust and rich fare - don't come for a light meal. Good for lunch or a few rounds at the bar.

First off - Ambiance is great- would that the food were as memorable.

Scratch that - the food was memorable- we remember our disappointment.

We stopped in after work for Happy hour and some Chimay- for a snack- we ordered the sliders. (sadly, there is little meat/tasty bits inside the not so fresh buns)

What happened to the previous simple servings on French bread/toast from some time back?

Then the overpriced Chimay- 10.00 per glass?!? Served by a bartender that was, well out of it (to put it kindly) - as he seemed to have had a few Chimay himself!

We pushed our luck and ordered profiterole to be shared. The chocolate sauce and ice cream were each fine but the chaux was, well "older" and neither light nor airy.

all told-

60 smackers poorly spent on overpriced beer and a rather unhappy happy hour.

This was a much better experience several years ago.

Not to be totally negative, Caribu has wonderful, clean, well appointed bathrooms! Which, in our view are great place to sneak in and eat a WaWa hoagie- which is a better taste and a value at 5.00...You may still then have cash enough to pay for another overpriced, poorly cooked Carubu serving of average tasting haute cuisine.

Que s'est-il pass, Caribou?

After going through walnut street we(5) had the urge for a late lunch and stopped by Caribu cafe. The atmosphere was promising and we decided to lunch on the bar menu ( we were told they were between lunch and dinner. Turn out we were in the culinary twilight zone. After placeing the order we waited and waited and finally waited some more. After waiting for 35 minutes we inquired on oir meal. It'll be right out we were told. Considering we were the only ones in the placewe believed. We waited another 10 minutes and finally got our meal. And what a let down. The ceaser salad had 50% croutons. The fries were clumped together - an obvious result of careless defrosting. I even found wilted lettuce in my salad. All in all it would have probably fared better at Boston market or mcdonalds. This was a major disappointment that we will not make agin.

Pros: Example: best croissants in town

Cons: What are the drawbacks?

For 20 years now the Caribou Cafe has been a fixture on Walnut Street.

I have to say, I have always enjoyed hanging out here for a drink or a late meal after a show or after work.

The food is fairly standard bistro fare - but can be very good at times.

This was a very bad dining experience from start to finish.

I was in a group of 8 from out of town. Not only did Caribou mishandle our reservations--bumping us from 8:30 to 9:00--they then made us wait until nearly 10:00 to be seated.

The two young bartenders made up for this by ignoring our attempts to get a drink; they seemed to have little to do but did it very slowly and deliberately, almost as if they wanted to avoid helping us. The second we were joined by an attractive young woman, however, they rushed to get her a wine list. It was like getting helped by two high school kids with an attitude.

When we were finally seated, the food turned out to be quite regrettable. I had a piece of salmon that was sub-par, and made even worse by being drenched in onion soup; my dining-mates didn't finish their appetizers or entrees. To make things worse, the waiter declined to give us separate checks, and then left our bill to another wait person without telling her.

I'd give this place a pass--the food was as bad as the service, and both were quite poor.

Awesome Food. Great Environment and great service. Stumbled upon the restaurant while I was in the Theatre district and I would definitely recommend this restaurants.

Great place right near the Forrest theatre.. stop in for drinks, appetizers, or pre-post theatre dinner... Very tasty food, great location, people watch as the crowd walks by, nice outside tables for warmer weather.. Definite pick.

You can't go wrong with a mimosa from this place, fresh squeezed OJ and delish champagne! YUM! they make a killer bloody mary as well, heavy on the horseradish...in the BEST way. the atmosphere is lovely, it truly is reminiscent of meals had in europe. the escargot is delicious and the quiche may be the best i've ever had, perfectly fluffy. i would recommend caribou to any lover of brunch. i look forward to tasting their dinner menu someday soon!

I have been to Caribou Cafe three times. The first time, I went in the afternoon with a friend of mine and we enjoyed an exquisite bowl of escargots and a fine salad. It's was a lovely experience overall. The second time (a couple of years later), however, I went in the evening, was treated very rudely, the food was cold and not even mine -- it was the wrong order! I understand bad days, so I tried again, this time with a group of friends. I recommended the escargots. I'm quite sure we said, "bowl," yet the waiter brought a skimpy dish of six -- he knew we were sharing. He became irritated in manner when we took our time (fifteen minutes to order -- this is a group). When the entrees came out, the food was fine. It was by no means bad, but not what I would expect from a restaurant of that calibre either. Bussers kepts asking if we had finished, and we felt rushed. We weren't particularly noisy, we didn't come just before closing, so I'm completely baffled by the experience.

Pros: The ambience during the day was lovely

Cons: Everything else! It wasn't terrible, it just was great...and its prices indicate it should be!

Went there on a Friday night! It was a great experience! Comfortable atmosphere, really nice manager, friendly bartender and waitress! The food was cooked to our liking perfectly and was really good! I would highly recommend this place, I will definitely be going back!

I went to Caribou Cafe specifically for a nice steak dinner and left extremely disappointed. When we arrived, the waitress misheard my order, and when I corrected her, she was rude and told me I hadn't spoken clearly enough. While we were given bread plates, there was no bread offered before the meal. My date and I sat with our drinks for over a half hour with nothing else. When the food finally came, the busser brought it to the table and left before I realized it was not the right dish. The waitress never returned to ask if the food was alright. After 10 minutes of waiting, we were able to flag a busser and asked him to get our waitress. A different waitress came back to the table and confirmed that the wrong sauce was used, and she offered to get the correct sauce. Our original waitress returned with the correct sauce and an explanation about how the dish was in fact correct, and I was mistaken. By this time my food was cold. She checked back 5 minutes later to make sure I was satisfied. My date and I became utterly dehydrated because she never offered to refill our drinks and no one refilled our water glasses. The second waitress cleared the table, brought the bill, and took care of the check. The original waitress never returned to thank us for dining.
I will absolutely not return to this restaurant. I paid for a cold steak with the wrong sauce, no bread, and no water refills.

If you want to see your co-worker or date be insulted- take 'em to Caribou. The food and decor is great- but I'm telling you- you'll regret spending a dime there- even if the dime isn't yours!

After visiting Paris a few weeks ago my wife and daughter tried Caribou for the first time over the weekend. The decor and atmosphere made us feel as if we were still there. The first thing we ordered was escargot which, strangely enough, we had a difficult time finding while in Paris. This version actually bettered what we had sampled on our trip (though not up to Pif quality - the best we've had). Thus encouraged, we went on to order onion soup (on the bland side), a salmon caesar salad (excellent - a wonderful blend of flavors, some of which could have overpowered) and onglet w/ frites (again, excellent. the steak was cooked to perfection and had excellent taste. the frites were very good). While I was happy with my Kronenbourg (as always) my wife had a couple of weak glasses of wine. This seems to be an area they could improve. Notably, we had a waiter who was attentive and friendly and interacted wonderfully with our 8 year old. We'll be back.

I have wanted to try Caribou Cafe for a while so i went last Sunday with my brunch mate. The food is what you can get at other French/ Fusion restaurants (I had a mushroom soup and a crape my friend had a Quiche and spinach salad with baked cheese and toast). The servers kept bring the wrong food to my friend, the head waiter would spot the mistake and took the plate away from my friend and DON'T EVEN APOLOGIZE! the worst thing is they do it repeatedly and don't even had the courtesy to say sorry. they just walked away with the plate and be intrusive the whole time when they were serving us. THEY ARE RUDE THE WHOLE TIME WHEN WE WERE THEIR! IT RUINED MY SUNDAY BRUNCH! It's not worth going, the food is not that good to have to put up with this trashy service.

If you can't go to Paris then go to Caribou Cafe. No much of a difference and mor affordable. Ambiance, food and drinks, you can't beat it!. if you let me know. I see "le tout Philly" when I go there so it must be a sign that something's cooking at this place. The only draw back is they don't take reservation for the patio.
Just sit at the bar, have a Kronenbourg and be nice with the Maitre d'. you'll get a seat outside.

Just had another superb dinner, Cassoulet and crepes. One week ago I went for steak frites and a glass of wine, and ended up with 5 friends (very picky) and spent the night listening to live Jazz and having cocktails and wines for three hours, our bill was 190.00.
Great ambiance, good value food and wine I am going back tomorrow.

I thoroughly enjoyed Caribou Cafe. I started with a few glasses of a nice French Shiraz and found the bar on a Thursday night to be fairly empty and relaxing. This place also has a great atmosphere, it just feels good. We were given several choices as to where we wanted to sit for dinner and settled on a cozy corner spot upstairs, excellent quiet spot for a date folks! We began with the soup of the day, which was a carrot ginger. I wasn?t overly excited by this combination but it was delicious. We next had the escargot, which was done in a garlic tomato sauce and was really excellent. I had the skate which was so very tasty and my companion had the duck which was equally delicious. I really loved the food and the atmosphere and will definitely return!

My fiance and I had Valentine's Day dinner at Caribou last night. The restaurant somehow has what some would call "good vibes", it just feels good to sit there and look around. Its not as though it is visually amazing, or that the food is extraordinary, but everything combined makes for a tiny bit of an intoxicating time. Steak Frites was great- medium rare came out just as red as it should be. The Alsace-region dish of sausages and sauerkraut was fresh and light, each sausage complimented the other. No dessert last night, and the desserts weren't too inspired. The service was brisk and kind, and loved just being there!

My friend and I had our New Year's Day brunch. We ordered the Fromages Du Jour for an appetizer. It had three servings of cheese with fig spread and walnut. The mild cheese was smooth and the strongest cheese was pleasant-tasting. At first, we didn't want drinks but we changed our minds a few minutes later and ordered two mimosas. These were great to wake up the tastebuds. The orange juice tasted freshly squeezed and the champagne was dry. It was a perfect mimosa and made the rainy day feel brighter.

For our entree we both got the steak frites and mine was perfectly medium. The char outside was darker than at other places. The frites were crispy and the salad was a great complement to the dish. For desert, we both got the profiterolles. I usually get this dessert and this time it was served in a large cream puff shell instead of the usual two smaller cream puff shells. The chocolate sauce was dark and rich and the vanilla ice cream was smooth and light. I did detect some tiny, tiny crystals in the ice cream but it could be from the humidity of the air.

The service was charming, gracious and understanding of the last minute changes of mind. We had already asked for the check but then decided to get dessert. Water glasses were filled promptly. The bill was $77 ($90 with the tip).

Cons: large profiterolle (i'm just used to dainty cream puffs)

We were visiting from out of state and after walking by the place several times, we thought we would give it a try. The atmosphere was fantastic - orange-painted walls, warm lighting, and vintage posters advertising alcoholic beverages lined the walls. Jazz music was playing the night we were there and there were live musicians on Saturday night when we walked by. The menu looked to be authentic, so we went for it and were greatly disappointed. The hostess showed us to our table without much interest in us and the waiter was short with us. When we asked for a few more minutes to look over the menu, we ended up not seeing the waiter again for 15 minutes. He finally came by for our order and another person brought out starters. The French onion soup and pate were really good, but the bread was brought out after we had eaten the starters. The bread that was brought out was a random assortment of breads and no French baguette to be seen. Our dinners came out to us by another server before our starter plates had even been cleared. The cassoulet was bland and the steak lacked any flavor. We still ordered dessert (creme brulee) and thought it was decent, but the coffee was of the Sanka variety. Then, yet another employee, brought out the check. And water was never even offered. Overall, for the prices of the entrees, we expected much more from the food and and from the service. For the same price, you could go to any number of fantastic restaurants in this area and have a great dining experience. We would not go there again, not even for the great atmosphere.

As I am yet to have eaten the fare at Caribou, I cannot comment on the menu. But with its elegant, Francophilic décor, the Caribou makes one feel like a character in a Hemmingway novel, and, after two Plymouth martinis, one may very well feel like Hemmingway himself. The Caribou is the perfect place for drinks before taking in a production at the Walnut Street or Wilma theater.

Boring menu for large $$ per plate. Caribou sounds exotic...but it's not. It's just the same old Ahi Tuna and Pork chops. And why would anyone want to try their outdoor seating? The traffic is so loud and pedestrians have to veer around your table. You may as well have a picnic on the sidewalk.

Cons: boring food, loud outdoor seating

Last Saturday, my friend & I went to Caribou Cafe for lunch. The lunch menu outside looked good so we decided to give it a try. The friendly host greeted us warmly & seated us promptly but the menu he gave us was the Brunch Menu. We were not interested in it but we looked it over & waited for the waitress to come. When she did, we asked to see the Lunch Menu but she told us rudely that it was only for M-F. We were disappointed but decided to stay & get a meal off the Brunch Menu. We put in our order & asked a few questions. Our waitress was a bit miffed at us as we asked her the questions. My friend got the Arugula Salad with Chicken & I got the French Onion Soup & the Veal Milanese Sandwich. The soup came right away but was not severed by our waitress. It was not the best but at least it was hot. We waited for almost 40 minutes before our meals came. Customers who came at in after us were being served their lunch and some were finishing up too!! When we got our meals (again not served by our waitress), my food was cold and my friends salad was a bit soggy. I think our waitress forgot about us & our food was sitting around in the kitchen. The sandwich was supposed to come with tomato sauce as a dressing but I could only see a quarter sized smear on the bun and speaking of the bun, I only got a bottom half of the bun. The top was non-existent and the roll just looked like a plain potato hamburger roll not the French Bread Style Roll them menu described! The small salad I got with my sandwich was limp & the vinaigrette dressing was tasteless!!! Our waitress came around after we ate (almost an hour after we last saw her) & asked if we wanted a refill on our iced teas. We said yes but she never got them for us, only the bill. Total cost was $35.00, which is not a lot of money, but was truly a rip off for the food & service we got. Im never going to the Caribou Cafe Again!!!!

Pros: Friendly Host, Nice Location

Cons: Rude Service, So-So Food

.

I came in on a Friday night with no reservation and they were still able to get a table for my group. The service was attentive without ever being pushy or rushed. Our food was wonderful (particularly rave reviews on the special appetizer of the evening: an extraordinary salmon timbale) except one pasta dish my friend said was good but not exceptional.

Great selection of wine, and fun recommendations on special cocktails. Only request on drinks would be if their wine list would specify which wines are on offer rather than only listing varietal and price.

Comfortable, good atmosphere and great dining, plus close to so many theaters. This may well become one of my regular dinner spots.

We live in the neighborhood and would love this to be our spot, but each time we go we get rude service. Tonight was the last straw: the waitress did not visit during the entire meal leaving empty glasses, finished plates, and no offer for dessert. All the while, she was stopping in on the table next to ours chatting in French and ignoring us. Rude. No Merci as we got the check. Unbelievably rude. Don't bother with Caribou.

I will not return to this place! I live in the nieghborhood and might stop in once a month but not anymore! The service was good at one time but just recently it seems to have fallen apart. The host who has seen me on quite a few occasions won't even great me with a hello, seems more of a scowl. The staff is no longer friendly or knows what they're doing anymore which can make up for poor food quality. Many times my meals have come out luke warm and under-cooked. The bread is horrible and it tastes as though they serve it with margerine. Take my advice and skip it there are many friendlier and tastier place to eat in the city.

This is the second time I've been here. The first time was about a year ago and while not terrible, I was underwhelmed.
My colleague and I were looking for a place to relax and enjoy fine food and wine on Monday eve. Well, most places are closed on that day. We walked past Caribou and saw that it was open- great, I thought, it should be fine.
Well, it wasn't. The server was ditzy (similar experience a year ago), our food was not good at all. I had the bouef bourgignon- beef was fatty, the noodles were tough- the whole dish was lukewarm to cold. My colleague ordered the sausages, saurkraut and potatoes. They totally forgot to include the potatoes- after asking about this, they were brought out with minimal apology. We both had the house salad- frankly I've had better at Wendy's.

The wine was good though.

This is the place you dream of on a cold, rainy day. It specializes in what I like to think of French comfort food. The menu is small but each entree is exceptional in preparation and freshness of ingredients. Wheter you come for lunch (a good bargain), or dinner (more hectic), you can count on solid, consistent service in a pleasant atmosphere.
For lunch try the traditional bean and sausage cassoulet paired with a hearty red wine. For dinner, their skate wing is buttery soft and absolutely divine. If they would only bring back the chestnut puree dessert, I might consider moving in permanently.

romantic, great service, values of bar and food are outstanding, always upbeat. I go there at least 2-3 week. And I see the same people there.

This cafe I had found by looking in one of they tour books. I found this place to be AWSOME! The steak is perfect! The fries(Friters) were cooked to perfection. They service was great they left you alone just long enough to enjoy and take in the atmosphere. I've been coming back on my trips to Philly so far I've been 5 times and not disappointed at any of those 5 times. Newly reanovate!

Went yesterday for lunch and was very disappointed. After sitting around for 10 minutes waiting for anyone to acknowledge our table (not even bringing water), waiter brought menus, took our order another 10 mins later and then...we waited. and waited and waited. When it arrived it was not worth waiting for. Croque Monsieur supposedly served on brioche bread looked like Wonder Bread and had about as much flavor. French Onion soup with burnt black onions in it tasted like dishwater, as did my Bloody Mary. Beet salad with a "potato galette" was really a burnt on the outside, mushy and cold attempt at a potato pancake. Nice atmosphere, but the food and service were so bad don't waste your time.

The ambience downstairs tried to imitate a French cafe which was nice but not authentic. We ate upstairs along the gallery which excluded our table from the overall mood. The pate appetizer was fine but forgettable and surprisingly served without crackers or toast. The steak and frites were done to perfection. The service was lacking. Our waitress never checked back with us. We could not find her at all for the bill and another server offered to get it for us. We waited an unreasonably long time to get our change.

I've been going to Caribou for a while now. The servers are all friendly and knowledgeable. The bartenders - Billy, in particular - are the best, they make you whatever drink you want. They get to know you. I go there sometimes, sit at the bar, have no clue what I am in the mood for to drink and tell Billy, or sometimes Susan, to make me a drink of their choice. Never, and I mean never, was I unhappy with their choices. The new owners are scuh incredible people with a desire to shake things around this neighborhood. The food? Excellent. Great flavor, incredible sauces, tasty soups. Everytime I bring my friends and/or family we have a great time at Caribou. Especially in the summer when you can sit outside on those comfortable chairs brought directly from Paris. We love it.

The food and the atmosphere more than make up for the average service, but hey, this is supposed to be a casual, relaxed place- not The Four Seasons.
They have a nice wine collection that complements the country French menu very well.

The food is generally good, if somewhat Americanized. This is nowhere more true than the "frites," which are like those batter-fried fries you get at suburban chain restaurants. They used to be great. I have no idea how this happened.

Since Olivier De Saint Martin took over (2003), things are looking UP - and way more actual French folks are eating there, which is always a good sign. Not only is the regular menu perfect as classic bistro fare (must eat: escargots appetizer, it's heaven) - I've never had a bad special. The prices are more than fair for what you're getting (cheaper than Pif, and I think, better), they have a nice winelist, the atmosphere is charming and the service is friendly and informative. Plus his French Fries are perfect.

My husband and I have been here several times. We've had dinner in the dining room and bar and we both agree, we enjoy the bar menu more. Great burgers and cocktails. They use to serve deviled eggs which were wonderful, but they are off the menu now. Their salads had a little too much dressing on them but overall this is one of my favorite spots.

I enjoyed my entire meal at the Caribou recently, but I must say that the desserts my friends and I sampled were simply to die for! I would recommend to anyone the Caribou for to satisfy their sweet tooth. I think that their butterscotch breadpudding is worth a trip alone. I don't know what that pastry chef of their's puts in it, but it was positively divine! Try it if you know what's good for you! P.S. the French Onion Soup is pretty good too.

While visiting Philly, my husband and I stumbled upon Caribou on New Years's Day. I have to admit that it took quite a while for our food to arrive - while everyone else seemed to be getting their food in record time - but we both agreed the food was worth the wait. We truly enjoyed our brunch and the accompanying wines. Our waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable. We loved the building, the artwork and the food, and will recommend it to others visiting Philly.

They promised to serve our group of twenty at 6pm. They promised to have us out in time for an 8pm theatre performance next door. They promised good food and good service.... So much for promises. We sat 20 minutes before a server appeared. Another 30 minutes for our drinks to arrive. Another 30 to take our dinner orders. Our dinner finally appeared at 7:45pm! We ate so fast we never tasted the food in the 5 minutes we had left to eat. We called the next day to speak to the owner. We endured profanities and are banned from the restaurant. MY promise is to never set foot in Caribou Cafe again!

I had brunch here with two friends and we had a lovely meal. I liked that the music was not loud. The menu choices were great--I had trouble deciding because there were many things I would like to try. The food was nice and hot--my quiche lorraine was delicious. Our server was helpful and courteous and willing to please. I don't understand the unhappy reviewers. This was a lovely casual French restaurant. It was a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

As for a positive statement, I can only say that the decor was nice. The menu lacked selection and creativity. The food was good, but the portion presented for an entree resembled an appetizer. As for the quality of food, the prices are out-of-line. I have eaten at far too many quality restaurants in Philly to ever set foot in Caribou Cafe again.
