I felt that the food was sitting on a steam table for days and absolutely not fresh. The spinich pie was so dried out I could'nt cut it. The fish that they served , which they said was fresh, was clearly frozen.
In the end, I was sick for 2 days after eating there. I do not believe the cheap prices are worth it .

This is a place for those who enjoy good food. If you didn't like the food, servers or atmosphere then go somewhere that's trendy and dark! This is all about good food, enjoying a cocktail and people watching if you like sitting at the bar, it's a great spot. Tom, the owner and his staff are friendly folks who enjoy what they do and they do it well. And when the soft shells crabs are in season it's a treat to go to SSS!

Not to argue with the other review -- but SSS is GREEK! Delicious authentic GREEK. Hummus, pita, felafel, grilled fish, wonderful appetizers (if a bit on the salty side), lots of vegetables, a fabulous restaurant that has been a fixture of South Street for 20+ years. A real homey place. YUMMY.

My boyfriend and I were on South Street and we never tried this restaurant. We were seated promptly and the wait staff was courteous and helpful. The owner was standing at the bar and came over an introduced himself. Very nice man. As an appetizer, we ordered the spicy feta dip. It was delicious. Then came our entrees. I had the greek combo #1 and my boyfriend had the gyro combo. Both were awesome!! We would have had dessert but we couldn't eat everything the way it was. The ambiance and decor was nice. The bottom line is: for cheap eats and an excellent Greek meal it can't be beat. This will be a must the next time we are on South Street!

Pros: Great Greek food. Definately recommend.

Cons: As always, parking on South Street.

I always use to pass Souvlaki and wonder about what type of food it was... now i know, it is Good food! mostly asian style, and very reasonably priced. Plus the atmosphere of South Street never fails to produce a good night out.

This was the first place I've ever eaten at on South Street, and I've been back several times. The service is extremely quick, and servers are friendly. Gyros, platters and felafel are absolutely delicious. This place is not expensive and great for a good, quick meal.

Pros: fast service, good food

Cons: small place

The food was absolutely disgusting and not very fresh. The server hovered the entire meal and when I said I didn't want to take home the left over appetizers he freaked and asked about fifteen times "Are you sure everything was okay?" I've heard so many good things about this place but was very disappointed.

Pros: None

Cons: Gross, weird servers

Nothing fancy here, just stick-to-the basics Greek cuisine. Hummus dip and grilled octopus are both winners, as is the soulvaki, despite the marinated meat filling being a tad overcooked. But for $5 a sandwich, who is complaining? Finish your meal off with excellent baklava. Overall a great meal at an even better price.

Hey man, the gyros here ARE good! It is the best most Greek thing they have. The rest of the cuisine is not bad for Philadelphia. Spinach pie is OK, but pricey. I like the take-out stand at this place, a cheap convenient option. There really aren't many good Greek restaurants in this town, which leads me to this question: why can't I find decent feta cheese within the city limits...? And who makes the feta here - Velveeta?

I have been here many times over several years.
I do not live in the same state as the restaurant.
however, when i fly into the Philadelphia airpoirt i make it a point to go to this restaurant.
the food and service is quite consistent. however, i am more concerned with the quality and consistency of their food. i highly recommend the assorted cold appetizer platter.

Enjoy!

On a random visit to Philly, happened to be walking down South Street and decided to venture here. I had low expectations but it was a warm summer evening and the prospect of some hummus and pita, with a chilled reisling, was enticing. Turned out I was going to be very pleasantly surprised.

The wine was average - very very sweet, almost a desert wine. But the food was superb. The cold appetizer combo plate is highly recommended. The lamb was excellent. Superbly tender - did not care for the sauce that much, but the meat was perfect.

And it all came out to be 16 a head, with tip. That is amazing!

Don't come here for the perfect date. But if you want to hang out with friends or family, and just have a nice meal at a small, not pretentious joint - this is perfect.

Pros: Inexpensive, Great food, Friendly ambience

Long lines are typical at SS Souvlaki for a reason. The food is wonderful. The menu is traditional Greek, nothing innovative. Just good food at a good price. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner at the bar and he was a delight. The servers tend to be brusque because this is a very busy restaurant- but no complaints. Try the oven roasted potatoes!

A great restaraunt with original food. The food here is even served in a traditional Greek way. Located on South Street in the heart of Philly!
