They have the best pound cake ever. My only complaint is that they do not do sheet cakes and they only decorate for birthday and wedding cakes. Their butter cake is phenomenal.

My wife and I grew-up in the Harrowgate section of Philly but live in Michigan now these past 8 years. My sister inlaw has been soooo good to us, sending us a couple loafs of Stocks pound cake several times a year, especially for Christmas and Easter. We love it when its here and miss it terribly when its all eatten up!! When we get back to Philly for family get togethers or for vacations , Stocks is a must get to place. We always return to our home in Mich. with a "SUPPLY" of pound cake, but for some reason its never enough!!!! IT always disapears. We are going to be back in Philly this weekend (10-10-09) for our nieces wedding. We'll be Stocking up to be sure!!! I'm sure we will manage to get a awesome BUTTERCAKE or two before we leave as well. We'll be savoring other comfort foods like soft pretzels, Ritas, cheesesteakes, the list goes on. So, for the best tasting pound cake in the world , get to STOCKS. PS. I'm 63 now and have, to the best of my recollection, been enjoying Stocks Bakery for the past 55 years or so, for real!!!!!!!!!!!

I grew up in Port Richmond and had Stock's cakes throughout childhood. Now that I live in Virginia, I travel back to get cakes 1-2 times per year. Not only are there pound cakes good but birthday cakes and cookies as well. This place rocks.

Thank you for that information. I have been calling and calling and didn't know why they weren't answering!!! By the way, Their cake is awesome but the service is rude and they treat their customers like we are idiots. Oh well, I guess it doesn't matter.

D.G.. They're closed for vacation for the entire month of July... I hope your wedding isn't until after the end of the month! There's another bakery in Phila whose pound cake rivals Stock's... I can't think of the name right now though. I'll re-post if I can remember!

Does anyone know how long they are closed for vacation? I am getting married and my parents had a stocks cake and they want me to have one also. At first I didn't care where the cake came from until I tasted it and it was super yummy.

There is nothing better than a Stock's pound cake. My wedding cake was from Stock's and we had no left overs...not even the top of the cake, that you put away for your 1 year anniversary, was spared. It was simply delicious! I would suggest Stock's pound cakes to any bride. You won't be disappointed!

I was born and raised in Kensington and never heard about Stock's until I moved to New Jersey. It is the best pound cake I have ever tasted. I never come out of Stock's with just one pound cake. The cake freezes very well. I cut one in single slices and freeze so I can have a slice anytime, and I always freeze a whole one for a party or get together.

If you like Stocks pound cake you'll LOVE Rilling's Bucks County Bakery in Warminster Pa. Friends have questioned if I got the cake at stocks and I'm quick to tell them to try Rilling's bucks county Their pound cake is outstanding and the decorations are wonderful. Also they have many flavors of pound cake and delicious butter cream icing. Chocolate chip pound is my all time favorite. They are a good old fashioned bakery with excellent butter cakes, cinnamon buns, danish oh and the best cream donuts you'll ever have.

I am from NJ and moved to Fl. Never heard of Stock's even when I lived up North. My cousin brought me some and it is to die for. Now, every time she goes up there, she brings me their cake. I LOVE IT. Wish they had a website so I could order and they ship. Sorry I never knew about this when I lived up there.

Stock's cakes are the best. Everything they make is delicious. We too have moved away. My daughter works in center city and stops for us on her way home. We love Stock's bakery and our daughter for bringing it home for us.

I have Stock's pound cake for all the special occasions in my family. I grew up in Kensington but now live in the suburbs. I actually enjoy the drive back to the old neighborhood. Recently we had a pound cake for a friend's birthday. We were suprisingly disappointed with the cake. It didnt taste like the usual pound cake and was very crumbly. I am hoping it was just that particular cake. I guess I will just have to get another cake and have a cake tasting party!! Hopefully it will be back to the dense, buttery richness as it always has been!

My son was in Baghdad and we sent him Stock's cakes. Everyone agreed it was the best. It was great to have the sweet taste of Philly while he was away.

I called Stocks bakery this morning to request a cake for my wife's birthday. Knowing how busy they usually are, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get one today. Once again Stocks came through and i was able to order one for this evening. Stocks is a legend for Philadelphia and prices are amazing. I would wait in line for days if i had to just to get one of stocks cakes or cookies. Well worth the drive, or the wait. Either way you won't be disappointed.
Thanks Stocks

Having been born and raised in Fishtown, I thought everyone had a Stock's cake for every occasion! Little did I know that many people had to suffer with greasy pound cake. Stock's has the best pound cake and icing! I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone!

1. The store is a brick building with a tiny window and no sign outside - right on the corner of a row of homes. There is sideways parking right outside.
2. They only take CASH (maybe checks, too??)....and you will buy more than you planned to, so take extra $$ with you! With this in mind - it's going to be a LONG time before Stocks gets involved with long distance shipping or internet ordering. They are just an old fashioned family business that doesn't want to mess with success!!
Stocks Pound Cake is guaranteed to get you an...."OH MY GOD!!!" at the first bite, from your guests. This cake is a great "icebreaker" at parties as folks sample it and talk about the history of this amazing bakery. It goes a long way It also freezes really well and you won't waste a bite.

My grandmother, God rest her soul!, who lived in Kensington for most of her life, introduced us to Stocks years ago. We went ballistic when we tried this cake (our whole Italian and Polish family are 'foodies') and it frequented MANY of our holiday tables. Stocks pound cake is outrageously good (doesn't even need the icing, trust me) - I prefer the 'brick' type the best but it's all outstanding. It's just a shape preference thing!I brought it to work literally today for the women here (Helene Fuld School of Nursing) and everyone was RAVING about this cake. My one supervisor came running up to me and hugged me! because she recognized the cake as a Stocks! I now have numerous orders for the next time my dad (Louis Grieco - they know him there!) goes to this superb bakery. I'm sure he'll make a special trip!!! Keep up the tremendous baking! Thanks!Patricia W.

After searching high and low over Philly to take butter cakes back to my displaced Philly boyfriend in Virginia I find this website and these reviews. Not only did Stocks hold all the remaining butter cakes they had left until I could get across town to get them ,but walking in the bakery was one of the best experiences of my trip (first one) to Philly! Absolutely heavenly scents waifed through the air and the bakery was spotless. I had been told all day "what's a butter cake?" or "special order them 2 days in advance" , so finding Stocks was wonderful. It truly is the best of Philadelphia!!!!

I went to school with Mark Stock and my family has bought their cakes and pies over the years. Even today after leaving the city 31 years ago their recipes remain the same. One bite tells me this is from stock's. I just wish they had a website and would do shipping.

Stocks is known for their pound cake. It's everyone's choice for wedding cakes. They don't do any fancy decorating but they really don't have to because it doesn't last long. I ordered a cake recently for my mom's birthday to feed 50 people and the cake was less than thirty dollars. They have amazing prices and the quality is awesome. They are also known for their raisin bread which is only available on Saturdays. Be prepared to wait in line!

I have moved out of the city and still go or send a familymember to get this cake for every birthday. Thick pound cake with deliciously sweet icing. The kids ( and adults) always fight over the flowers. We had it cut for my baby shower and there was none left for me. This cake never stays around long so be sure to put so away for later. Everyone who has ever had it agrees!
PROS: Great recipe good price
CONS: Can be a drive

I'm not much of a cake eater, but Stock's is the best. Their pound cake is outstanding. I just wish there was was a little closer to my home. I guess it's a good thing or i would be eating their pound cake everyday. The only problem I have with stocks are their prices and the long lines. sometimes the line is out the door. this can be very frustrating especially around the holidays.
PROS:
CONS: .
