Stopped by here on a pub crawl. The place totally reminds me of some dives I used to goto in San Francisco. Dark and seedy, bathrooms covered in graffiti, but with an interesting crowd. The beer was cold and cheap ($2.30). They have .75 cent hot dogs and chili dogs for $1.25, but they're kinda nasty... But hey, whadda you expect for $1.25! :) Never the less, it's just what the doctor ordered when you stumble into the place at 1:15 AM!

I do believe, I'll be going back here again.

If you can't deal with smoking, rude waitresses or cheap beer this place is not for you. If you are going cause you like to smoke and like drinking good beer for low prices then this place has it!

It's cheap and dirty and still cool after all these years. They have Porter on tap and plenty of good beers. I'd skip the food here. There are many regulars and plenty who just wander in and stumble out...

This is the Dive you want to be in if you don't want to be bothered. This bar has always catered to the cheap, the broke, the broken & the weird.

You can still smoke here because its a neighborhood bar and only smoker hang here anyway.

If you want to eat dinner ... a hot dog costs $1.50 best damn meal in town for a Drunk!

They have wifi here which, for me, makes all the difference in the world.

I LOVE THIS BAR!!!! Cheap Beer and you can SMOKE!!! OMG I'm in heaven. Not only is the beer cheap but they have a great variety!!! I was drinking barley wines for $3 and I didn?t have to go outside to enjoy my smoke either!!! If you?re not a smoker or can?t stand the smoke then don?t bother, I?m originally from Scranton so, this is a little place like home for me. Believe it or not there are a lot of people looking for a place like this especially in the City. However, they most likely will not be writing a comment on this page. This is the kind of bar that people find out about from word or mouth. No one in the right mind who is looking for this type of bar will be surfing the net. All the people who wrote lousy comments about this place don?t know what a real Pennsylvania-Philly bar experience is worth! You can have your stinking smoking law and I hope you all get 2nd hand black lung anyway!

Pros: You can smoke and find craft beers @ affordable prices

Cons: I personally couldn't find a con!

It's a cheap smokey bar. It smells bad. The workers are rude and scary.
It's like a barely lit Waffle House that you can get drunk in.
Shots of the cheapest whiskey and a lager are what you drink.
There are plenty of haggard 40-year olds. There are lots of people who I would describe as graduated hipsters (too tired of the scene to even try anymore). Also, there are a lot of lonely wannabe lovers who desperately want to be talked to.
This is the place that Charles Bukowski would go in Philadelphia.
I am going there tonight and I'm going to have a blast.
When the bartender gets mad because I take too long ordering, she'll roll her eyes and take 20 other people's orders in front of me out of spite...
I'll cherish every single moment.

Pros: fun and cheap

Cons: a tad bit depressing, too smokey for me to breathe (but I will manage)

I will tell everyone that I know to avoid this bar. I was never treated so rudely. I just arrived at the bar and was apparently standing in the way of a disgruntled waitress when I was told to "move" and she literally pushed me. After that, she told me she would "push me harder if I continued to stand there". This should have been handled more politely. Upon asking for management, no one was able to provide any sort of apology. I was treated as if I was in the wrong...and I had only been there for about 5 minutes. From reading the other reviews, it sounds as if miserable servers are the standard here. Stay away!

This place pretty much stinks, literally and figuratively. The fact that they still allow smoking makes it difficult to breathe, and I think every patron was lighting up. I came here with 3 friends on a Thursday night, and we barely stayed long enough to finish one drink. My friend and I went up to the bar to order a round, and were told we couldn't be served since our other friends were seated at the Ms. Pac-man table. Mind you, there were plenty of empty tables and space around the bar, and the service at the Ms. Pac-man table didn't seem too speedy. A grim waitress eventually served us some cheap beer, the one plus. The rest of the crowd was pretty seedy too. All in all, I usually like my dive bars a little less rude and smelly, but then maybe I'm not a fan of true dive bars.

This place is bulls***. The place denied my boyfriend service because his eyes are "too red", but they weren't too red to get into tops bar above and owned by the same people, and not too red to get into the bar. The service is rude, they are dirty and unaccommodating. It's not a dive bar, it's a c*ap bar and you should totally avoid it.

The Bar where I learned to drink in a Bar.

Has probably still poured me more beer than all other spots on the planet put together. I used to be in 4-5 nights a week, for about 12 years.

I live on the Left Coast now, but I still stop in at Mickey G's every time I'm in town.

Yes, it can be a bit intimidating to out of towners who aren't used to real Tavern behavior.

Pros: A slice of my ill spent youth; ah the memories.

Cons: Mcglincheys stays the same; I get older.

The waitresses here are downright rude. The beer is very cheap, but it is just not worth it. It makes you afraid to order a beer because it will be slammed down in front of you by an unsmiling waitress, if it comes at all, and you are perpetually afraid that you will be given a hard time about standing or sitting in the wrong place in the bar. This place prides itself in being an authentic Philadelphia dive bar, but I have lived in Philadelphia for four years and never experienced rudeness like I have at McGlinchey's. My advice: don't bother.

My group really had a poor experience here. We were visiting Philly from the midwest and were referred to this place for cheap drinks and a good crowd. When we (group of 6) arrived, three sat down in a booth, while three went to get drinks. The waitress promptly went up to the people at the table and said, "If you aren't going to drink, you can't sit here." Slightly upsetting, since we had literally just arrived. So our group vacated the table to stand next to the bar. We all ordered drinks, and then the waitress was upset because we were in the space that she uses, and they kicked four of us out of the bar. No warnings, no asking to move, just snatching our beers and making us leave. I and another of our party were at the bar, drinking the two beers we just ordered, while this was occuring. After our friends left, the waitress went up to the bartender and said, "Watch these two, they were with all those others, and probably should be kicked out." I said, "what are you talking about."
"Don't get mouthy with me."
"What do you mean, I haven't even talked to you."
Then the bartender grabed my beer and told me to leave. Unbelievable. I truly never experineced anything like this before. The staff was very negative toward us from the minute we walked in the door. Perhaps we were slightly intoxicated, but certainly we were not beligerent or obnoxious. I would avoid this bar at all costs, and go to a place with more pleasant staff.

McGlinchey's is the drinking man's bar. Regulars drink beers and shots. The drinks are cheap, the glasses are hazy, and the atmosphere is spartan and dingy. It's comforting.

McGlinchey's will never change & that's the best thing about it. This bar has always catered to the cheap, the broke, the broken & the weird. Even the heinous toilet paper situation (yes, they still have those tiny, tiny squares of tissue paper that we all know & love) can't stop you from loving this place & wanting to come here every night. The smoke hangs like a cloud over your head everywhere you go, you brush up against fellow bar patrons just standing up from a bar stool, the tables & floor are covered with spilled beer & other unmentionables, the pitch black walls & lighting make it nearly impossible to see anything, least of all your drinking companions, the pick-up situation is sometimes great & sometimes terrible....yet you keep coming back b/c this bar gets under your skin. The crowd is cool no matter who they are or what they have. And no matter how popular McGlinchey's gets, the place has never undergone the kind of gentrification that killed Dirty Franks. For that alone, not just the cheap drinks, McGlinchey's is still, hands down, the best damn bar in Philly.

PROS: the place remains the same but the experience always changes
CONS: none that I know of

McGlincheys is one of the cheapest bars in the Center City Philadelphia area and it's generally packed with hipsters and bar-hoppers. One of my personal favorites to start out the night. It doesn't offer much entertainment besides atmosphere and a place to drink, but if that's what you're looking for, it's perfect.

Comfortable, eclectic mix of people intent on changing the world and, barring that, getting toasted like an english muffin on a bleary-eyed Sunday morning.

This is the place I come when I only half feel like going out. It's never too loud to hear your friends and the prices make it almost too expensive to stay in. The service is the surliest I've had in the city but hey, once you get used to it you are uncomfortable with anything less. The food is safe but not good, I mean, the hot dogs. If you had a few too many don;t hesitate to order.
