The food here is outstanding and more importantly it is consistently that good. I think they have had the same cook for a long time and it shows. You always get a consistently good meal here. The bartenders and wait staff are good too.

I'm a bar person, which mean I am huge lush, but rather when I go out I always sit at the bar. Fine dining resaturants right down to diners. I just always feel relaxed and able to enjoy the atmosphere. Here are some of the reasons that I love Sotto Varalli A. that it's a great place to people watch, B. it's some great yummy food. C. some of the best bartenders in town! Seriously these guys can slam it out! Varalli's is primarily a theatre restaurant, which gets people in and out in time for their shows. The bartenders do it all with such flair and humor! I have gotten a two course dinner and coffee within 45 minutes, it wasn't pretty but they got it done! On Friday and Saturday nights there is a jazz duo that are wonderful. This bar is friendly and unpretentious. really enjoyable.

Varalli's claim to fame is the fact that it's on the Avenue of the Arts, aka Broad Street, across the street from the Academy of Music and the Kimmel Center of the Performing Arts. Its food is good, not great, but it's very convenient if you're attending a concert or a play at one of the theaters that also line the Avenue of the Arts. The service is excellent, and you are guaranteed not to be late for the rising of the curtain.

I was just in Philly for Memorial Day weekend and went to this restaurant on Saturday night. It seemed like a nice place to enjoy the evening and watch the live jazz musicians who were EXCELLENT.
I ordered a skirt steak and my wife had the free range chicken. These portions were so small that I could have eaten both without a problem and I'm not a big guy!!!
Portions are like appteizers.
If you go here eat before or plan to eat after as I did.

- extremely sloooooow for food to come out
- host and servers are courteous
- decent food
- FOOD POISONED!

I took my wife to this restaurant for her birthday.
After being seated and ordering our food, it took 30 minutes for the appetizer to come out.
We thought, no big deal.
We ordered fried calamari, and it turned out to be overcooked, and really tough and dry.
We also ordered salad, but after waiting another hour, nothing comes out, so we canceled our salad and just asked for the entrees.
By the time our entrees came out, we had waited another 1 hour since we received our appetizer.
Although the entrees tasted good, by the time we got home, my wife knew she was food poisoned.

Unless you have 2 1/2 to 3 hours to spare and don't mind being food poisoned, don't come here.

The food was wonderful, the restaurant was clean and had a soothing decor. We had a great dining experience. The seafood was the freshest I tasted and the fruit was perfectly ripe. I would highly recommend this restaurant to family & friends. I can't wait to go again!

Had a very similar experience as the reviewer! Was just walking by Sotto Varalli after a performance at The Wilma, saw the crowd and wandered in. The Jazz combo was fantastic, the pianist especially amazing. The bartenders were really pleasant, joking around with each other, but not excluding the paying customers, great repartee. We had desserts and a couple cocktails, which was the clincher for us becoming regulars! Champagne Cosmo's. A Chocolate Martini too die for!

Have been coming to this place for years and always love it! here's our routine...Friday nights, get there at around 8 or so, try to skip the Theatre rush, grab a seat at the bar, have one of the bartenders specialities, an Espresso Martini (yum), then get a table near the jazz duo. Have a relaxed dinner listining to the great music, then back to the bar for some coffee and dessert. waddle to a taxi. Our waitress on the last visit, Jennifer is amazing, so sweet! If you haven't been back in a while, go back!

My wife and I walked by Varalli's one evening after a performance at the Academy of Music. We initialy went in because we heard wonderful sounds of jazz coming from the restaurant. Upon entering we realized very quickly that this place had great energy and excitement. The atmosphere, crowd, and music all complimented the view of the active city life through the huge windows. We had a couple of drinks and appetizers. We think they have the best calamari we have ever eaten! We sat on a comfortable banquette with cocktail tables that had a great view of the musicians. We felt as if we had not left the show at the Academy. Everything came together to make a great performance at Varalli's, the food, service, music, and ambiance were a terrific combination. Since then, we eat dinner at Varalli's before a show, but save our dessert for the evening performance at Varalli's after the theater.

We have dined at Sotto Varalli many times and I have to disagree with the previous review. The portions are perfect. Maybe this reviewer is used to the old standard of quantity over quality. But I would say that everything we have ever ordered has been plentiful and satisfying, not to mention excellant quality and freshness. Varalli's has always exceeded our expectations from food to service and beyond. If you want the "never ending pasta bowl" then go to the Olive Garden, but if you want truly creative cuisine at a reasonable price for Center City, then Varalli's is THE place!

I went to this restaurant on Nov. 24, 2006 with a party of seven. The food was mediocre at best. The dinners were not hot, the drinks were small even though we asked for tall. We had appetizers, and the so called signature dish (among others). We all have nothing good to say. Find another place... next time I'm going to.

After first going to Sotto Varalli on Valentine's Day in 05, it quickly became a favorite of mine for Philadelphia dining. On certain nights they have live jazz which certainly helps the atmosphere. It is perfectly located for those going to see a show across the street at the Kimmel center. The sesame and poppyseed crusted tuna if offered as a special is a must try.

This restaurant is a local favorite. Located in the heart of the theater district and the world of restaurant chains, this independently owned restaurant offers charming and prompt service. Sotto Varalli offers an excellent meal for a great value.

Having just relocated from New York to Philadelphia, I was a tad apprehensive about the social graces that the City of Brotherly Love would hold for my fiance and myself. I was shocked to find that Philly is certainly first class. We decided to dine at Sotto Varalli for dinner prior to the annual fundraiser that my company sponsers. Our experience was most definitely top notch. From the moment we entered the restaurant, we were treated as if we had been coming there for years. Our server was amazing; I wish I could remember his name, but I think I had one too many martinis!!! If you come to Philly...go to to Sotto Varalli...amazing; definitely top notch!

I took my husband here last nite for a dinner date based on Sotto's high ratings on citysearch and we both absolutely loved it! We got a nice window seat, a friendly waitress, and the food was magnificent. I had lobster ravioli which was delicious and he had the hawaiian butterfish and we both ate to the limit. The steamed shrimp dumpling appetizer was very tasty as well and the tiramisu was SPECTACULAR. And believe me, I had my fair share of tiramisu all over the place. I highly recommend Sotto for a romantic date if you want to impress that special someone. Loved the live jazz. It worked for us! See you again soon

A group of us (eight) just dined at Sotto tonight and had a fabulous time. We ended up at Sotto after much internet research on other restaurants in the CenterCity area. I was pleasantly surprised by the space-intimate, but lively enough to encourage conversation and a feeling of festivity. Service was outstanding. The food was wonderful. The bruschetta was perfect, we all shared, a delicious mixed combination. The true highlight for me was the roasted duck with a yummy sauce. It was absolutely stunning. The dessert was a fantastic bread pudding with chocolate and berries. Delicious and in a great location. To cap it off, there is live music, bass and piano with vocals. We truly had the best time. See you again.

Pros: Close to Broad St., Very Reasonable, Great view

My fiance surprised me by taking me into the city for a romantic dinner. We decided to order a nice bottle of white wine, which we pointed out to the waitress on the menu since we could not pronounce it. This bottle was $35. She came back with a bottle of red with the exact same name and even told us how to pronounce it. Because we thought we made a mistake and ordered red (since it was THE SAME NAME) we just drank it and didn't say anything only to find out it was $95 when our bill came! The manager and general manager refused to take it off our bill saying a wine presented is a wine sold and there was nothing they could do. While Sotto Varalli has decent food, atmosphere and even service their customer service leaves a lot to be desired.

Had excellent dinner here. Waiter was very attentive but not overbearing, also quite knowledgeable on the wine list. Food came out in a reasonable amount of time and App's were brought out quite promptly. Not too crowded so it made for a quiet date spot. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and plan to go back. We sat in the windows, which was nice, but the booths in the back look very appealing and private....I would recommend requesting them. It didn't seem like reservations were necessary but I am an advocate of making reservations even if 10 minutes before dinner. Both of our seafood dishes were excellent!!

First, make sure you go on friday or saturday night to hear the live jazz. Second, to actually see the guys playing the jazz, you have to sit in the main dining room. There's another dining room that's sectioned off...this isn't nearly as romantic and isn't nearly as intimate. If you want romance and a good view, ask for seats in the main dining room.

The food is exquisite if you go on a non-busy night. Not so if its busy.

I took my family Fri. night for a celebratory dinner and we were treated to one of the best dining experiences ever. This restaurant is just lovely, the mosiac display, octopus and window seating were wonderful. The staff was very accomadating, maite d' and waiter. We all had different dinners from tuna to cioppini and loved all. including the appetizers. I personally enjoyed the brushetta. And on top of a delightful dinner we were treated to wonderful live jazz. the gentleman who sang and played bass was superb. Thank you SOTTO.

nicely decored, cozy, upscalish spot. Friendly Maitre D', server was moderately friendly, but better than obviously forced friendly.
Extensive wine list, not too pricey either.
Appetizers and entrees were very well prepared and presented. They were also decent sized servings.
The bar is very attractive. Beautifully tiled ceiling with a large squid.
The scene was an older, theatre crowd. But again, this is not your local dive spot. It becomes very cozy and romantic once the theatre crowd rushes out.
Overall very nice, highly recommended.

I went there with a group of 12 for lunch - it was a very nice place. The main courses where very good, but the appitizers are what made it. We all ordered different items, and shared. Everyone couldn't get over how great they where.
I'll be going back and just ordering several for the whole dinner!
Loved it.

Dazzled by the luminous mosaic and captured by the sounds of live jazz, my partner and I chose to dine at Sotto Varalli on December 10th. What an amazing experience. The lighting, music and atmosphere were all simply breathtaking. Sipped on cocktails and shared an appetizer at the bar while we waited for a table. Try the tuna tartare....fabulous!!! So then we were seated at a lovely table near the windows and the jazz duo. We only had to wait 20 minutes on a busy Friday night!! Our server was very helpful in guiding me through the menu due to my dietary restrictions. The food was well presented and simply amazing. The polite and attentive staff coupled with an incredible atmosphere make for truly fine dining experience. Did I mention the Bread Pudding...to die for!!! Don't miss out on this place!!!

Sotto Varalli is big and beautiful but after that it is just
another average restaurant in a city where average
just won't cut it. Nothing in my experience there was
bad, it just wasn't good! With the many culinary gems
Philadelphia has to offer I would suggest by-passing
this place.

For an Ave of the Arts palce this is a good value. Every plate can be had for $2-3 less in a smaller portion. It is kid friendly and the romantic. Live jazz on fridays. The lobster ravioli is good. My biggest grips is the small selection of pasta dishes.

want value and seafood that matches or surpasses
any of the above you should try Sotto and you may
can not complain about the abiance it is pretty interesting.

Found this place on a fluke going to theatre. Went back next night for anniversary. Food was excellent!! Service excellent!! Get the Calamari and the Carpacio(beef)!! The price is right!! The portions intense!! Definetly a find in Center City!! This will be a regular hangout! Love the bartender!! Don't hesitate, GO!! You won't be dissapointed!! We weren't!!
