I have an old membership (lifetime) and used the club on Old Capital Trail in Newark, DE. I moved away and on occasion would use the gym when I would be in the area. I received my yearly bill, but was never told that the club was closed on June 30th. I was shocked! Why would they send a bill without notification that the club was closed? The North Wilmington and West Chester clubs are too far. All these years, I have enjoyed going to the club, but now will give up my membership completely. It is not worth it and I am sure those two remaining clubs have to be crowded. So, sorry, the poor economy has hit this business, too. At least, I found out before I renewed my yearly membership.

I tried the temporary membership option at the kirkwood site. It was so hot I did not want to work out. Cardio machines were good : everything you really need is there except for air conditioning and ventilation where it counts: the workout areas. It also has a pool, which is kinda neat -but it is inside and not really large.

people say you get a better workout when you sweat- but not to the point where you are totally dehydrated. They need to update their ventilation system (gets to be around 78 degrees in the cardio room on hot days), and building -it is like something out of the 1980's. On the other hand, if you are just thinking about the cost- you get a LOT for the money. Just bring deodorant and stay hydrated.

i have just joined kirkwood, about 3 weeks ago, and I do not like it at all. I do agree with the Joe M. There is something very weird about this gym. I dont like it and it makes me feel uncomfortable to be there. So overall this is not a good gym at all.

I have been going to Kirkwood for the last couple of months. I have noticed a lot of weird things going on. I see men come in with their wives on some occasions, and then see them with other women, that are not their wives and are very cozy with them. I see them flirt and leave together. I see "skanky" women come in just looking for men, when they have no business being with the men in the weight room. That is why I call it cheat wood, I have seen this many times and thats why I left. LET THIS BE A WARNING TO YOU, DO NOT GO THERE AND DO NOT LET YOUR SPOUSE GO THERE. THERE ARE A LOT OF BETTER GYMS OUT THERE. Thank you

When I joined several years ago there were around 5 or 6 clubs, which made it pretty convenient. Now they are closing the downtown Wilmington club, as of October 18, 2007, which makes it much less convenient, and frankly maybe no longer worth the money. Management has closed clubs, shortened hours and even taken soap out of the showers. Clearly not a good trend - downward spiral.

I think Kirkwood is terrific. Unlike other gyms-people are not there for show but there to work on themselves. I found most managers to be very helpful (hey, there's always one bad apple in the bunch). For middle age and older clients it's great-lots of classes to take at different times of the day.
I would like some TVs in the machine room however everyone seems to enjoy the private time they have-reading or listening to their music.
It's got the walking track, pool, sauna, hot tub (which I see them test the water frequently) and machines. I rarely have a problem getting a machine. The people are nice and plenty of parking. Mondays are busy-guess it's the weekend guilt crew.
No kids under 16 are permitted- a definite plus. Lot's of middle and seniors
I would recommend, and have to my friends.

Pros: parking, walking track, machine availability

Cons: no tv

The "managers" there did not care about the members, they only cared about the money. I heard from someone that they got a fungus from the hot tub. The layout is not very catering to weight lifters. The cardio area has no Tv's. There is a lack of machines and the time restraint onthe machines is horrible. If you plan on going there, make sure you get a month to month membership just incase you want to leave promptly, but even then they will still take your money. Not helpful and didn't care.

Pros: there weren't any

Cons: managers, office people, small areas, older machines and weights

.

The facilities where ok, not enough treadmills and no TV's to watch.
It felt a little like high school with the different cliques......not very welcoming to new people.
Management not very friendly either.
Make sure to sign up for the monthly membership so you can get out of it if you don't like it. I did and I'm glad because I found a new gym that is much more friendlier.

Kirkwood fitness and racquetball club is a good place to get a workout. There is a ton to do here. Racket ball courts, hockey, weightlifting,a really nice gym. They are a little pricey, but you do get a lot for your dollar. They have up to date equiptment, and they also have plenty of room for banquets, and all sorts of space. Good place to workout.
