The gym was OK. Often the equipment was only available at off-peak hours. The classes I wanted to attend were so crowded you could barely move. Like the previous poster, when I tried to cancel my membership I was told by a staff member that everything was taken care of. I was charged for two more months and then noticed the charges on my card. I called their billing company who said I had to send a certified letter or I would keep being charged. Now, this is consistent with the cancellation policy so it is totally my fault. HOWEVER, the staff person told me incorrect information and when I called to speak with a manager and left messages no one EVER RETURNED MY CALL. I had the date, time of when I called and was given incorrect information. So, like most gyms, they make it difficult to cancel and the staff are not informed or are instructed to lie so that they can get more $$ for the owners. Also, very UNPROFESSIONAL of the manager not to call me back after multiple phone calls.

I've been a member at X for 2 years now, and have been consistently happy with their service. A two-story gym conveniently located at Walnut and Ivy in Shadyside, they offer cardio room with treadmills and ellipticals (1st fl) and a few machines (bike, step) plus a large weights/free weights area (2nd fl). Membership is flexible (I pay $55 month-to-month, with no-penalty cancellation at any time; you can also put your membership "on hold' for up to 3 months consecutive if you're going to be out of town or whatever) and includes towel service. Also included are a wide variety of fitness classes, including Pilates, yoga, spinning and various Les Mills brand classes, which take place in a large front room or a smaller studio in the back.

The large number of classes plus the fact that it's open 24hours Mon-Friday (when closing time is 9 pm) makes it convenient and easy to work out (no more excuses!). A staff member is always present during business hours, but otherwise traffic in and out is not monitored. All you gotta do is swipe your keycard before/after working out. I have found the service friendly and helpful: one time I even lost my keycard but they let me work out any way, and didn't even charge me the standard $5 replacement charge!

The X gym is going through renos right now, which will bring some changes, so this review might have to get updated. I personally am hoping to see some recycling bins around (no recycling yet). The owner/manager was responsive to my eco-suggestion, however, and hopefully will green operations soon.

A friend and I belonged to this gym for one year and both left at the end of our pre-paid membership. It is over crowded, the cardio room almost always smells terrible, and it is very hot. I do not believe there is AC in the cardio room and even in the winter they have to open the (one and only) door to let some fresh air in. All of the classes I took were good and the instructors were great, but they were very overcrowded. Plus, Spin classes cost extra.

Even though my new gym is much smaller, I'm much happier there because it is clean, air conditioned, and has enough machines for the amount of members.

Pros: location

Cons: options

.

I joined this gym for the location. It has all the free weights and machines I need, offers good spinning classes, and has a comprehensive collection of cardio equipment. I do think, however, that they could offer more spinning classes.

A major turn off to this gym is some of the staff. A couple of staff members in particular walk around with an "I own this place" attitude and are very immature. From time to time, some of these staff members are loud and obnoxious.

I once had an experience where a staff member literally yelled at me at the top of his lungs when I was putting a road bike away after use. It was very unprofessional. Although this staff member may be one of the managers, I am surprised that the higher-level management stands for his behavior. It is a poor reflection of the gym's owner.

If I lived somewhere closer to another gym, I would join it over the X any day.

I joined this gym months ago based on convienience. Due to the poor facilities, not enough equipment, rude customer service, and terrible enviroment I decided to cancel my memebership. I cancelled 3 months ago, and I'm still being charged from my bank account. I have tried to contact the manager and there is no manager only the owner, who is always on vacation and never calls back. Be aware that if you join not only will you be getting subpar facilities, you will also end up paying far more than you intended.

I disagree with all the negative comments also. The X is in a good location and is appropriately priced for where it's at. The hours are very convenient...they are only closed on weekend nights when no one really works out anyways. It's open 24 hours...it never says 7 days a week. They just got new equipment and have knowledgeable staff that is willing to give demonstrations. The aerobics, yoga, and pilates classes are all included in the membership so that's a plus as well. Overall, it provides almost everything you need to get an efficient and effective workout. Check them out!

Pros: Hours, Classes, Friendly staff

All of these people giving this place 1 star are full of it. This gym is great. They are open 24 hours during the week, and the weekend hours are more than sufficient. I don't know of any other gyms in the area that are open 24 hours at any time. I looked at Club 1 in "Shadyside' (East Liberty) is way more expensive than X and in a bad area of town. I also looked at the Fitness Factory and it was cheap but it is a dump. The staff here is awesome and they do not give you an attitude. The gym does not smell. whoever wrote that must not have worn deodorant when they worked out. They have recently updated the locker rooms, free weight area, and cardio equipment. They offer more classes and more variety of classes than any other gym in the area. I would recommend this gym to anyone. the monthly rates are fair and you get what you pay for.

This place brags about how they're open 24 hours. Well, they're not. They're only open 24 hours 4 days out of seven (57%). That's weak. So weak they don't even put their hours on the website. They just exclude their hours and hope everyone assumes they're open like they claim they are. Pathetic. They even put "24 hours" in neon lights out front. I can't believe I just wasted this much time bitching about their hours. wow.

I just moved to Pittsburgh and found an apartment 1 block away from this gym. I emailed them asking for information including cost, equipment, and to just have someone contact me and try and pitch it. They never returned my email or called, so I went there one day after work. First impression: filthy and overcrowded. The machines were not well maintained, the employees seemed like they didn't care if they signed a new member, and even if I would have signed up, I doubt I would ever be able to find available weights or machines! The only reason this place is still in business is because of the location, and the fact that its the only gym in the area. Gold's Gym or any of those other national brands should come here and put this place out of business.

While X has updated their treadmills and some of their other equipment, this gym is not worth the money. The majority of the equipment is old, the male members of the gym constantly drop heavy weights and the staff does nothing about it even there is a policy not to. Now members are harassed to sign in before they use the equipment downstairs, which is a major hassle since it always a struggle to get a machine. They should invest in a scanning system on the first floor as well. There are better, more organized gyms in Pittsburgh to join.

Just joined 3 weeks ago and couldn?t be happier! ?The X,? as I call it, is located right in the heart of Shadyside on Walnut Street. I am young business professional residing in Shadyside. X provides me with the convenience of working out morning or night just minutes from my house in one of the nicest, cleanest areas of the Pittsburgh. Plenty of state of the art equipment, clean locker rooms (very clean showers!), workout/stretching room, and even new cardio equipment with personal TVs attached. All the classes are free with membership and they even offer tanning. Their made-to-order health shakes are delicious and packed with protein as well as other optional supplements.

I am unsure what gym the other reviewers have been complaining about?? I feel it is fair to say that X Shadyside is the most equipped, accommodating, and friendly gym to which I have ever belonged.

I agree with the other posts. Other than location, there is no reason to go to this gym. It is cramped, it is NOT 24 hours, it is dirty (tape holding the broken mirrors, etc.), there are not many machines and the ones they have are old and run down. As I mentioned, the place is so small and beat up that it goes without saying that there are no pools, courts, punching bags, or anything else you might expect for the price. I strongly recommend you look another direction for a gym.

I am a reluctant member of this gym because it is 2 blocks from my house. Otherwise, it is an absolute dump. It smells. It's often 100 degrees inside and stuffy. I don't go near the disgusting locker rooms. There are never enough machines for the sheer volume of members who go there. Take a book, because you'll sit around for an hour waiting for a machine to open up, regardless of the time of day. Half the machines are broken. You can't see the TVs from the machines. Even if you can see them, there's no volume.

The weight room is dominated by musclehead steroid goons dropping enormous weights on the floor and shaking the whole place, pacing around with menacing demeanors, posing in the mirror, etc.

I've belonged to other gyms in other cities and paid less for much, much nicer accomodations. This place is so cramped it's ridiculous. There is enough room in the tiny far corner for one person to do crunches. And you'll be doing them under the feet of some muscle head doing squats while he's roaring and grunting. No swimming pool. No basketball courts, racquetball, squash.

And the "24 hour" thing is a joke, too. They're closed by 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and by Noon on even the most minor holidays. At least you can go there at 3:00 a.m. on a Tuesday night!

I have been a member of this gym for more than one year, and I belive it's gotten worse. It is NOT clean. Everything is cramped and run down. Two treadmills have been out of commission for days. There are often temperature issues. In the summer it was a furnace. There is poor ventilation which makes everything extra extra stinky.

The upstairs weight room is dominated by roid ragers who slam their weights on the floor (which you can hear by the way while you're downstairs using cardio.)

There is no availability of machines. I was there last night at 8:30 p.m. and had to wait. I was there today at 6 a.m. and had to wait! There are TVs that are positioned horribly so that you get a cramp trying to watch...not to mention that you have to read the closed captioning because there is no audio!

I have belonged to five different gyms in my lifetime in different cities, excluding university facilities, and this is the worst experience I have ever had. The staff is not friendly at all. When I inquired last night as to the status of the broken machines, I was greeted with a blank stare.

This place simply takes advantage of its location, and sadly, that's why I am a member. It's location is super convenient. I can only hope that with all the development going on in the East End, some shop will come along and kick their a** with a spacious, clean, bright gym.
