I have taken my dogs and birds to this veterinary clinic for the past three years. I have slightly higher and lower opinions of the vets my dogs have seen for routine checkups and also for sickness (urinary tract infection). I experienced two vets in the past who obviously loved dogs but were impatient with and annoyed by humans. Then I found a vet who radiated kindness to animals and humans, and have stuck with her for my dogs (Dr Lavery).
I also lucked out and found a wonderful vet for my birds (European bantam chickens) to see. Dr Pleban has been extremely compassionate & patient with me concerning the problems my birds were having and took a lot of time to listen to me and explain the anatomy of the birds and the possible disease progressions and treatments. Both birds were given as much thought as a $1K parrot would have, in my opinion, and the vet followed up their progress by calling, and was very available for call back to update the progress. The staff was friendly and helpful as well.
Yes, the lab tests are expensive, and yes, the vets often suggest a lot of them, but the vet techs seem to be helpful in giving you priorities if you ask them to. I'd rate them 5 stars except for the prices. Order your non-emergency routine medications like wormers online, and it will save a lot of the routine bills.

After being treated at another north hills vet clinic, I was referred by them to Northview .I was told they were very good and less expensive. While I would take a bullet for my dog, I don't have the resources for extensive vet care,. My dog had lost half his weight and was jaundiced from liver failure..I explained my finances to the Vet. She mentioned possible euthanasia, which I quickly dismissed that suggestion. She had to keep him for almost a week to completely diagnose and try a cure..I never thought he would come home.but come home he did...they trusted me to treat him myself with medications and special diet..To be honest, I think they were surprised he made a full recovery..It cost me a bundle...but I still have my friend...Thanks northview

Although the staff is very nice and compassionate, the prices of this place are a complete joke. Not to mention they try to rip you off by charging you for bogus things. First off my mothers dog was seconds from death because of pancreatitis. They temporarily helped him and tried charging my mother thousands of dollars over the estimated cost. ...they did procedures and test that she never agreed to..when they specifically said my mother would have to confirm everything they did. In FINE print on the estimate sheet, it says they can only charge $100 over the estimated price without consent of the owner. My brother had to call and argue with them for them to take the thousands off. Not to mention they had him on a dangerous dosage of the meds which made him relapse..so we took him to our regular vet that time and he ended up only needing a shot of some sort.

So about a year after that, my cat had a urinary blockage. I was forced to bring him there due to the weekend. The vet said she needed a radiograph to see if he was blocked. It was a TON of money, so I asked if there was anything cheaper and she said yes, an ultrasound (why did she not give me any options? they are money hungry there! Not to mention all other vets told me an ultrasound is normally more expensive than a radiograph!). We got an ultrasound and it determined he was not completely blocked yet and we had an option of going home with antibiotics etc and try to prevent him from becoming completely blocked or leaving him there.... If he became completely blocked we would have to bring him and leave him there anyhow. I asked how much to unblock him and leave him there. She said keeping him there, unblocking him, inserting a catheter etc would cost $1500. Obviously I got the meds and went home and tried that, meanwhile I called around to get a cheaper price. A vet just down the street from me said he'd do all that for $500 so I brought him there. I called for prices on this procedure all over PA, OH, and WV and the average cost was $400-$800. Northview was charging $1500. Oh, I almost forgot...then as Im cashing out and they are giving me the meds they tell me I have to pick up one med at giant eagle...which was no problem. So the lady at says, here's an oral syringe in case giant eagle doesnt give you one. I said, Oh, ok thanks. I get home and look at my bill, and she charged me $6 for the syringe without even saying anything. That place, although everyone is very nice, just wants your money. Someone who used to work there said the colored triangle or whatever above the exam rooms are different colored in regards to how much u have or will spend at the hospital. Now, that is SICK and I will not ever bring my pet there again!

It's hard to give such a negative review when the people that worked there are so nice. Their whole system is god awful. I wouldn't go back unless my pet was about ready to die. They delegate which animals are seen first (which I understand) but we sat in the exam room for 3 hours until the vet came in and then had to wait another half an hour until the tech came in to give us the medication. And it isn't as if we showed up at a random time, we had an appointment. If your pet doesn't have a life threatening emergency I wouldn't go here.

We had a horrible experience at another emergency facility and decided to go to Northview. From the moment we pulled into the parking lot, we and our golden retriever, were greeted by caring and professional staff. Our golden had to be euthanized but the vet and the staff at Northview helped us through the entire process. They were sensitive, compassionate and patient with us. The entire facility is top notch. I would recommend them to anyone.

I have been taking my dogs to Northview since the early 80's, and wouldn't think of taking them anywhere else. Best group of professionals you can find.

My cat was (is) experiencing urinary problems and being unsatisfied with the current vet service, I looked for another vet. I first checked out reviews of Northview and then went to their website. I was please with their website and also their variety of animal care services. I called to schedule an appointment on a semi emergency basis and was greeted by a very friendly receptionist and was able to get in within a few hours. The hospital is very nice and the waiting room is comfortable and spacious. The staff was helpful, attentive and friendly. I went during the early afternoon so the wait wasn't long at all (not sure how things run during peak after work hours). The vet we saw was also very nice and friendly. She offered helpful suggestions and was realistic about tests needed. I also found the cost for an exam to be lower than what I paid for a city clinic. I even received a phone call from the vet the next day to explain the results of some tests done and she answered a question I had about my other cat. I will have Northview as my cats' care center and would recommend their services to other pet owners.

My dog had 2 knee surgeries here. Both went very well. Also, the vet is very nice, and explains things clearly. The only thing to watch for is consistency in information and skill among his technicians.

Along with owning a dog, I have three guinea pigs of which one has a few medical issues. The exotics care at the hospital is very good. Dr. Begley is not only knowledgeable in guinea pig care but seeks out additional information when a treatment may not be working. The staff are not only very courteous and genuinely compassionate but thorough in their explanation of how to administer meds. I have never seen them be anything but kind to everyone they deal with.

PROS: Knowledgeable, caring vets-Kind, courteous and compassionate staff.
    CONS:

We took our rabbits to Northview Animal Hospital as they were one of the only vets around that treated exotic animals. The doctors were very kind and treated our animals as special as we treated them. They encouraged us to have our rabbits spayed, gave us tips on housebreaking them that worked, and showed us the correct way to handle rabbits. We were very pleased with the care our pets received.
