This restaurant is consistently excellent. They do not take reservations of weekends and are a cash only byob. You usually have to wait for a table, but that is because it is so good. The outdoor tables are my favorite as it can get quite noisy inside. I recently took some out of town friends to this restaurant and they were so impressed with the inventiveness of the dishes. It is a good value and you can choose from small or large plates.

Audrey Claire is one of my favorite restaurants in Philly. I've only been on weekends, and I'm fairly certain they still don't take reservations and only take cash. But, the food more than makes up for these inconveniences.

I came here one night with one of my girlfriends. We did the whole BYO thing and had a cute table by the window. This place is small and quaint with an open kitchen, which I liked. We split a bunch of small plates and everything was delicious!!

We tried to go to Audrey Claire on a weeknight with my mother, who happens to be disabled. She would have been able to step up the one step into the restaurant and walk the couple of steps to the open table that was there. However, as we attempted to help her into the restaurant, we were met at the door by a server who immediately insisted that if we did not have a reservation then we could not eat there. I was surprised to learn that they take reservations, especially since in the past when we have attempted to make reservations, we were told that they do NOT take reservations. Perhaps they have changed their policy. However, what made the whole interaction worse is that the server could not have been more condescending to us. She talked to us as if we were mentally disabled rather than physically disabled, speaking to us loudly and unusually slow. I was giving Audrey Claire a second chance (I had a terrible meal there several months ago) however, after that treatment, I don't think they deserve a second chance. I recommend that management talk to the staff about how they interact with disabled customers.

The juice glasses used for wine may be hip, but you can't tell the difference between an $8 bottle and an $80 drinking out of them (can't smell the wine and the thick juice cup lip splashes the wine too far back in the throat--try drinking wine out of a shot glass and you'll have the right impression).

Ok, so clearly I have a problem with the stemware. The truth is many BYOs in the city use cheap stemware with low likelihood of breaking during dishwashing. After all, they aren't making money off the wine.

My real problem with dinner was that the food was thrown on the table so fast I was still trying to finish my appetizer as they were taking it away to put the main down. One of my colleagues commented afterwards that it was like eating at Applebees--efficient, but very rushed.

Finally, this is also not the restaurant to come to if you need a receipt. They really have no desire to provide for one (they use the one they write up to give you the bill to do there own accounting and won't rewrite it so that you can have a copy). So if you are dining for work--go somewhere else. This place won't satisfy your employer or the IRS with it's cash only, no receipt policy.

I'm being generous here with my two stars. There are great BYOs in the city, as such I don't need to eat at this one again.

I love the "Pear & Gorgonzola Flatbread" and the small intimate crowd that frequent this place. It's in the Rittenhouse square area so sometimes you may catch the furtive glances of the "In crowd/Snobs" if you're not dressed right.

It's recommended that you make reservations and you should BYOB if you really want to enjoy yourself. Next time I will bring a date with me.

Went to Audrey Claire for the first time tonight after multiple people had recommended it and I thought it was absolutely fabulous. We ordered the lamb and the grilled tuna -- both were delicious. They were cooked perfectly and the Mediterranean accents (couscous, yogurt, etc.) added a wonderful flavor to the meal. There was no wait (on a Sunday night) and the service was excellent. I would say that the only negative is that it is cash only. But, I definitely plan to go back!

This was a good experience all around. First off, the host was terrific and the waiter was very helpful too. While the place was packed both were pleasant, nice, attentive and honest. The food too was very well done. The octopus appetizer came atop salad, which was a surprise. I was just expecting some grilled octopus in a vinagrette. The two fish entrees - tuna and rock fish - were well done. The seasoning could have been a bit more zesty, the fish was of good quality and well prepared. They both came atop Israeli couscous and excellent haricot verts. I would recommend sitting at the bar if an option, because it's quieter than other tables in the very loud restaurant, and watching the cooks turned out to be entertaining and informative. I'm looking forward to returning.

Two weeks ago was my first trip to Audrey Claire and I firmly believe it is one restaurant in Philadelphia that absolutely cannot be missed. Mussels are among my favorite foods, and the mussels at Audrey Claire were the best I have every had. Definitely the best BYO I've been to as well. It's small and popular, with good reason, so be sure to get there early, or be prepared to wait. Don't miss this restaurant!

Dinner at Audrey Claire's was an awesome experience. Everything you expect in a restaurant exceeded our expectations - great service and amazing food. The interior is strikingly minimal and bare, but I now realize that's because all attention is paid to the food. The Branzino I had was cooked to perfection, it was the best fish I've ever tasted. I look forward to many repeated visits.

I went to Audrey Claire on Saturday (7/14) evening with 4 of my girlfriends. We arrived around 8:30 p.m., and had to wait for about a 1/2 hour for a table. The hostess was kind enough to open a bottle of our wine, so we could have a drink while we waited outside on a bench. We ordered the tomato/buffalo mozz. and pear/gorgonzola flatbreads as appetizers - they were great! The baby arugula salad was the perfect dinner for a warm summer night - I especially liked the warm goat cheese. My friends ordered the shrimp, caesar salad, and pasta w/ mushrooms - they were all happy with their meals, as well. We really liked the little wine glasses - it reminded me of Europe. Service was great - our waitor was really friendly and didn't mind that we took our time with dinner (and multiple bottles of wine).

Had dinner at Audrey Claire on a Sunday, it was not that crowded and my date was already seated when I arrived, so I cannot comment on any wait or seating issues. We began with the pear and gorgonzola flatbread which I believe was also topped with toasted pine nuts. This sounded like a great combination to me and it really lived up to my expectations, it was also huge. We also had the grilled octopus salad with feta and red onions that was a really tasty dish. I had the lamb with cous cous which I found to be really delicious and proceeded to devour. My companion had the risotto with wild boar sausage. I found this to be a tasty and very interesting dish. We finished with the warm chocolate cake which I was not blown away by, but it was fairly light and very good. Overall, I really enjoyed the food. I must agree with some other viewers that the tiny wine glasses were annoying (even after I tried to imagine myself in a small town in the French countryside) they were just too small and awkward to hold. We sat near the door which might have been an issue in the winter but on this night it was fairly warm out. I also read another viewer complain about sitting near the kitchen where it was loud, well I think the whole place was loud, in fact the acoustics stink and you really kind of have to lean across the table to make conversation, so while the setting is nice and intimate, quiet, it is not. I envision this place being a bit annoying on the weekends, but I would definitely go back during the week or on a Sunday, I found the food to be pretty solid and enjoyable!

The food was very fresh and tasty but it didn't low me away. I was especially disappointed with the crab cake on cornbbread. It was dry and uninspired. The wait was way too long for final result.

We went on a Friday night, so there was a bit of a wait. The host took our cell phone number and recommended we hang out across the street; however, we took a short walk and browsed around Barnes and Noble. We headed back after 45 minutes (without being called) and when we arrived the host told us he had tried calling us repeatedly without success. We waited outside for 15 more minutes and then were seated with apologies. Our server was pleasant and knowledgeable - she recommended the mussels for an appetizer. They were tasty, but a bit spicy, and more soupy than saucy. For our entrees, we had the salmon dish and the risotto with wild boar, which were both delicious (and I had my doubts about wild boar). The portions were well-sized; I brought a third of my salmon home. For dessert, we split the creme brulee, which was smooth and creamy, but not as rich and custard-y as I like. It was an extremely pleasant evening out.

Went there tonight for restaurant week. After reading some negative reviews regarding the waitstaff and food inconsistencies (especially those mentioning restaurant week) I was apprehensive. Right off the bat I was impressed.

The hostess and waitress were genuinely pleased to wait on us. The waiter described all the dishes and thoroughly answered any questions we had. Water glasses were always filled. Service was as good or better than one would expect for this type of restaurant.

Food was very good. Everyone of our 6 person party was pleased with the appetizers and main course. Portions were perfect. Not too much, not too little. All food was served at the same time for the party. Desert was fairly generic but good nonetheless (I would skip it and walk down the street to Capo Gira for some Gelato). The only other criticism was the lack of espresso or cappucino. Regular or Decaf are the only choices.

Still very recommended!

When I first tried to make reservations at Audrey Claire for a large party on a Friday night I was told that I would not have a problem getting my electric wheelchair up the 1/2 inch "bump" to the restaurant. When my party and I arrived we immediately realized that the bump was definitely a step and that it would be more of an ordeal than I thought to get in. Since we couldn't be seated right away they told us to wait at sister bar/restaurant Twenty Manning where they would call us when our table was ready. At Twenty Manning I encountered two more stairs that we had to awkwardly climb. Audrey Claire soon called us at the bar. Once back at the restaurant, the table was still not ready and we were forced to wait outside in the freezing cold until we decided to wait inside squeezed against poor patrons that were still eating. When we finally did begin to eat the food overall it was just OK. I had heard such good things about the restaurant, but my sole with pumpkin gnocchi was sadly bland and gummy. Our waitress also seemed aloof and a bit jaded. At one point when the entrees arrived and I had just finished my appetizer I smiled and told her I finished and she replied, "Nope, I won't take it" and walked away. I'm confused. Perhaps I misunderstood something there, but one thing I am clear on is that I won't be visiting Audrey Claire again.

This place is what Philly is all about! The BYOB really keeps prices down and the service is prompt and attentive without being overbearing. Food is DELICIOUS; we had crab cakes with the octopus salad for appetizers, plus the ostrich, trout, and sole for entres. Everyone was delighted by how fresh and well prepared the food was. The setting - minimalist BYOB with beautiful wood tables and white napkins - made it A+. This place is totally worth the wait!

I can't really complain about the food or service. We went during weeknights, so it wasn't that busy. I am getting a mixed signals however, I called before and they said they didn't take reservation but in the mean time, people in this forum say they did. Not a big deal - we were promptly seated since it was not busy.
The only part that I am a bit turned of by is the fact they do not accept credit cards. I can understand if their meals are about $10 - $20 total, but for a $50 plus total for 2 people I think it's a bit ridiculous to expect customers to bring cash that much. What if we were to have a party of 10 or more? It's the 21st century and even WAWA accepts credit cards for GOD sake.

I had been wanting to try this BYO for a long time, so we decided to go for Restaurant week. The simple decor is different but looks better from the street then when you are actually seated in the restaurant. The polenta and goat cheese appetizer was excellent but the flatbreads with spreads were very average. The tuna was dry, but the perch was tasty. The best part was the service - our waitress was attentive and friendly without being intrusive, and when the dessert menu left only one option (which turned out to be the tastiest part or the meal - chocolate cake) she comped us the peligrino. One final thought - as another reviewer pointed out, I too don't get the little bistro glasses instead of regular wine glasses.

We were there on a saturday night (party of 6) and got seated within 10 minutes. Although the service was a bit slow in the beginning, it picked up later. The food was very good. We ordered a variety of appetizers and small dishe for appetizers (4 appetizers and 1 small dish). I didn't like the sardines. I would recommend the mussels and the mozzarella and tomatoes. They were delicious. They are not big appetizers so I would recommend ordering a bunch for the table if you have a large group. The waiter was great! He was very polite and accomodating. The entrees came quickly although I think they sat out waiting for us to finish. Overall, the food was great. I would definitely recommend going there. Everyone had a good time. The price was also perfect. It didn't break our wallets. However, the air was off that day so it was quite hot. We also picked a very muggy saturday night to go.

I've been to Audrey Claire three times - the first two times I had a great experience. The third was my worst dining experience in Philadelphia so far. On a Wednesday night we arrived and were told it would be about a 15 minute wait for our 8-person party. One hour (yes, one hour!) later we were still waiting outside the restaurant for our table. Once inside the service was equally slow. Two of us ordered our hanger steak special medium, and it was practically raw upon arrival. The waitress was very apologetic and comped a couple of desserts for the table, but the staff on the whole did a horrible job of managing our expectations - especially rude on a weeknight when several of us had to work or get on long flights the next day (we met for 8:00 dinner and didn't leave the restaurant until after 11:30).

Oh boy!
The lure of trendiness, to eat and to be seen, to pay overpriced amounts and to be seen, it's SO New York, yes? I guess that's Audrey Claire's claim to fame, maiking us feel like we can aspire to the long lines and sidewalk dining and NY-scene pretending. We'll even say the food is good! SIGH, Philadelphia, is our inferiority complex so obvious?
I am from Europe, BTW, lest you think I'm gauche or just don't get it, where we have real outdoor cafes.

Pros: the scene...

Cons: Yuppies are so yester, day

We went on a Monday night at 6:00 for our first time and the place was empty. As a result we were promptly served and our food arrived in a timley manner. Not sure what it would be like when its busy. Our food was fantastic! Its a different menu than on their website which threw a wrench in some plans (i.e. planning the wines to take), but there were enough selections to choose from. The waitress was pleasant, helpful, and attentive. I cant wait until I return.

I've been going to Audrey Claire for years now: the food is always good, the atmosphere pleasent, and the bill correct. If one goes expecting fine cuisine and wanting to drop mega-bucks, one will be disappointed - but if one goes to experience a neighborhood classic and to enjoy laid-back food and people, it's a great place to be.

I went during restaurant week with a party of three to sample their menu and it was probably the worst food we have ever had. Appetizers were actually really good- clams, prociutto, squid salad were very good and highly recommended. The entrees and desert were hands down, the worst ever. The duck was rubbery, and not recognizable. The pork was tough and bland. The pasta tasted like it was right out of the box and into boiling bath water. There was no sauce with it. Just pasta and shrimp. Enough said. The chocolate mousse tasted like whipped cream mixed with hot chocolate powder. Awful. Dine at your own risk. Anyone who says this place is good must be out of their mind. Not kidding.

I went to this place during Restaurant Week, so the menu was limited but limited to the most amazing choices!! I started with steamed littleneck clams w/jalapeno, pancetta & shaved garlic and was amazed at the amount of clams that were received. My entree was the grilled atlantic salmon served over a tuscan potato-artichoke salad. It was probably one of the best salmon dishes I have ever had and I have had a lot in my time. My dessert was this creamy delicious green tea creme brulee that was out of this world. Got to sample the Espresso Chocolate Mousse as well and it was to die for! I would reccommend this place to to my friends for a wonderful evening out in the city!

A party of 8-girls on 8/5/05... we had 2-apps, entree for each, and 4-desserts, which were all tasty!! Service was excellent. Would recommend going early to beat the rush - 6:30pm. One point to remember: If you have a large party, then you will not get seated until most of your party is there. ENJOY!

I live nearby and had always wanted to try it out. When I got 5 friends to join me, we were seated and a minute later, because one of our party had stepped outside, threatened and scolded at because we weren't "ready" and were "holding" up a table. Instead of asking politely if we were all present, our first impressions of the restaurant were that the staff were rude (and ignorant) and we were being hastled. On top of that, when two of us ordered specials we were not informed that the price was almost double that of a normal entree. Although the listed prices were reasonable, the food was not great, and the portions a bit small.

If you don't mind the noise levels and are sure to have cash in hand, this is a great little (emphasisi on little!) BYOB with solid food choices at acceptable prices. We had a great waitress who helped us decide how much food would be enough without overwhelming us, and allowing us to sample everything from their wonderful flatbreads and small plates to a perfectly grilled whole Bronzino and sweetly sauced roast chicken. It IS noisy and a bit cramped, so I wouldn't recommend it for a romantic or quiet night out...but if you're in the mood for a bustling bistro atmosphere and want to sample some great food, check them out.

I had expected more of this restaurant. The risotto was bland and I grew tired of it 1/4 of the way through. Desserts were below average. Nothing about this meal said "wow." Plus, we were rushed out as son as dessert came. I would not return.

My fiance and I went for dinner and were seated right in front of the kitchen which was incredibly loud. We ordered an appetizer and a meal. We received the appetizer, a flat bread which was below average at best, about 20 minutes after we ordered. By about an hour later, we still hadn't received our dinners, and the people next to us had ordered, gotten served, finished their meals, and gone. We tried to get our waitresses attention numerous times to no avail. We finally flagged down a bus boy about an hour and 15 minutes after we ordered and told him to just bring us the check for the appetizer...which they did!!! No apology, no explanation, just an "oh, you didn't get your dinners yet?" I will never go back nor would I recommend it to anyone.

I live in Philly and I enjoy the abundance of BYOB's. This is one of my favorite BYOB. The food was excellant with a nice selection on the menu. Mediterrean with French, Italian and Spanish influences. Service was polite and attentive. One waning for wine afficando's, if you enjoy BYOB's becasue you enjoy go into your cellar and bringing a prize wine to a BYOB, Audrey Claire has no wine glasses. They serve wine in these small bistro glasses. I do not get what that is about. In addition to bringing your own wine, bring your own wine glasses as well.

I live nearby and I am a regular at Audrey Claire's. I see it as a relaxing retreat from the pretentious busy atmosphere around the rest of Rittenhouse. The decor and menu is simple, but elegant and delicious respectively. The tables are close together which has allowed me and my guests to meet new friends there. It's a place in this crazy city where you can relax and actually talk to strangers and even share a bottle of wine with them! I think the negative reviews on this site for AC just reflect that people are going there expecting it to be something it's not. If you want something more pretentious you can go to her other restaurant 20 Manning across the street. I'm a seafood lover and I recommend the mussels appetizer, the salmon, and the tuna steak. She always has great specials, too!

We were rushed in and out with about an hour. Our entrees came before our appetizers were finished. I didn't really think anything on the menu was different or special. I just think if you are going out for dinner, it would be nice to enjoy and not have the bill delivered to you before you even take a spponful of dessert!

In light of the several negative reviews of service on Citysearch, with some trepidation we finally tried the restaurant on a recent Friday before an Orchestra concert. We had a great meal and friendly service. You are sitting close together but at 6:00 the place was mostly empty (it was packed, however, at 7:00). Excellent food and, with appetizer and entree for two totaling $50 plus tip, it's a terrific value. Some nights they take reservations.

I have lived in Philadelphia my whole life, and have often enjoyed many great dining experiences. Unfortunately Audrey Claire must go down as one of my all time worst. The food was fair at best but the service and atmosphere were terrible. Rude is the only word I can use to describe the employees of this establishment. And it was not just our party. To call the service sub-par would be a gross injustice to all the places who with sub-par service. The way we were treated and watched others be treated was simply unacceptable. Not to mention the fact that the food was average at best. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

I had been dying to try AC for a long time, and I took a friend from out of town on an uncrowded Thursday night in August 2003. When we arrived the hostess was involved in a testy conversation with another customer who wanted to change tables. We should have picked up on her tone and left unaware of the rudeness we would encounter later in the meal. To cut to the chase, the service was competent, but terribly unfriendly, the atmosphere loud and ugly with car headlights constantly blinding us as they turned the corner, and the food only just fine. There are SO many BYO's in this city with better food, atmosphere, and above all, service, that I couldn't possible recommend Audrey Claire.

for its simplicity. My favorite restaurant. Avoid it on Fridays and Saturdays. Bring a nice bottle of wine and plan to stroll through Rittenhouse Park while you wait for your table.

This restaurant could do much better, food was fine in both times we had been there. If one definitely wants to try this restaturany he/she should try to arrive early and leave fast, otherwise your desert plate maybe pulled out of your hand with the excuse "the dish washer is running" (real incident) or maybe felt uncomfortable just because you are taking your time, enjoying a chat with your friends after dinner, even if nobody is waiting to be seated.

Went over there and to my surprise, they did take reservations although we were seated about 20 minutes late. Small stuff compared to the superb quality of the food. The veal was fresh, succulent and well-prepared. The mussel soup was absolutely delicious. All in a forced family atmosphere with tables arranged in a classroom style, three tables side by side in a row. If you're looking for intimacy, forget it. All in all, the excellent food made it worth it.

My experience in this little place was not as pleasant as I expected. The noise level was unbearable, and it seemed little has been done to soften the din....bare walls, low ceilings, and wall to wall diners. As it was a BYOB, I expected wine glasses would be available. I was told that there were only 2 glasses for the entire restaurant, and we drank our wine from 4 oz. juice glasses. The flatbread appetizer was very good, but the barbeque sauce that covered my mixed grill entree masked the taste of anything underneath it.

Food and service was on par with many of the other fine BYOBs in Philly.

My wife and I went on a gift certificate. I was surprised to be seated immediately (I had just lit a cigar for the walk and wait), and even more surprised to be sitting almost family-style, with our table 2 inches from the next. I had an Ostrich filet special which was excellent, and my wife enjoyed her generously large pork chop. The baby arugula and goat cheese salad was very good, and was split in two to share. The shrimp and chickpea pancakes were also good. Glad we tried it.

This used to be one of my favorite BYOB's until my last visit. Our main entrees were extremely overcooked. My fish was so overcooked it had the consistency of sawdust. The other entree which was a whole fish was just as overcooked and dry.
I hope this was just an 'off night' for the cook. I think I'll give it another try sometime in the future, but I hope that I'm not disappointed again.
