1 Stars: Hair in Food (by by Suburban Foodie at Citysearch)

Made reservations for a large party of 20 on July 20. Sat at the large table in front of the Budda. Everything was going well until one of the guest found hair in his food. That was totally unsavory and shocking. Told the wait staff and they called over the manager over. We did not get the manager's name, but he was slender with a shorn hair style and was wearing a pink tie that night. He came over and did not apologize for the incident. He only told our guest the kitchen staff covers their hair so nothing like this could happen. Our guest was made to feel as if the manager was implying he was lying. He made no concessions to our guest. Since this was a large party, a deposit was already made and we had a prix fix menu. The bill was over $2,000. I feel this is not acceptable for a restaurant of Buddakan's caliber to have this occur. It would have made a huge difference if the manager had been more accommodating. Not once did he come over and ask how we thought of the food or the service throughout our entire dining experience. Our server was the only one that attempted to remedy the situation by offering a complimentary drink to our guest. The manager had an unapproachable manner and condescending demeanor. Management needs to stop acting like the patrons our lucky to get a table at Buddakan. The restaurant is not what it was in their hay day. Most patrons are tourist and don't know any better. For the same price, you can go to a better restaurant that will be hair free.

5 Stars: Great night all around (by by rob_nicholl at Citysearch)

My friends and I went to Buddakan last Saturday night. Not expecting to get a table without a reservation, we decided to sit at the bar. We went to the upstairs bar, where it was less crowded and you didn't have to worry about someone standing behind you ordering drinks. Ariana, our bartender, was really cool. We decided to eat at the bar, instead of waiting for a table. Dinner was great. The crab sticky rice, calamari salad, and aged beef were my favorites. We all agreed that it was a place we had to come back to more often.

2 Stars: Reservation service was terrible in Philly!! (by by CSMobileUser2 at Citysearch)

The guest service attendant made it seem like this was the only restaurant in Philly. The restaurant attendant made it seem like you have to wait an eternity to ever eat in front of a big gigant buddha.

5 Stars: Buddakan is delicious. (by Jennifer L.)

MOST AMAZING FOOD I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. Everything I eat there is better than the last thing. It's slightly pricey, but served family style so you can be a recessionista if needed. Drinks are also amazing...I recommend the Geisha.

1 Stars: there are so many better places to eat than here (by by justus2inpa at Citysearch)

It's a neat looking restaurant but that is where the thrill wears off. The food is underwhelming, overrated and overpriced. You do better to buy a bottle of sake and get some asian takeout from Chinatown and find a romantic place to eat it than waste your hard-earned dollar at Buddakan.

We had crispy duck salad (more like chewy duck salad), duck "tacos", dried out chicken in a way-too-salty sauce, filet which was more expensive than it should be for how tough it was. The dessert "doughnuts" with dipping sauces were good but I can get them fresher at my local chinese buffet.

Our waitress was superb but other than that, pick someplace else to fill your stomach..

2 Stars: Beware if you have a large party (by by ruth347 at Citysearch)

Went with 13 people for a dinner after graduation. Because we were such a large group they made us eat what they wanted to feed us, and we didn't even get menus. We were pretty much taste testers with the plates they brought to the table. And when the bill came it was over $1300. $100 per person. I will never go back, they are a rip off. Especially with the economy the way it is today. Bye-bye Budda!

3 Stars: Buddakan (by by SteveBoo at Citysearch)

Tonight was a birthday celebration for my girlfriend. I had previously eaten at Buddakan for lunch, and it was good. Tonight, however was a different story.
First, the appetizer special, a duck confit spring roll, was not what I expected, as it was greasy and soft. Additionally, the lobster crepes were too thick and the lobster was overcooked, again, not what I expected at all. The duck entree, which I ordered medium rare, was presented at a well done temperature, and the salad that accompanied the duck was dressed with only rice wine vinegar. However, I can say that the spoon bread was the best that I have ever had.
The service was exceptional.

I used to live nearby & went here often. The food & service is always good. Although I would say it used to be even better. Still, it is probably my favorite pan asian in the city. Not to chef: put the duck fried rice back on the menu! Thanks

5 Stars: Delectable Symphony (by by khrystina at Citysearch)

The food here is even more scrumptious than the relaxed atmosphere! I promise, you could order every course of your meal blind-folded and you'll enjoy each dish set before you (of course using judgement where allergies are concerned). One plug I must push is their Green Tea Cheesecake that is OUT OF THIS WORLD! Each seperate sauce plays an important part in the experience. Indiviually, yummy but collectively it provides a delectable symphony that your tastbuds will thank you for bite after bite.

They are very personable and will help you make a decision if you don't know what to order... It's great to go for a romantic evening or with a group! The food is for sharing which is great. The desserts are awesome too! Cocktail of choice - Sangria! Steven Starr restaurants are always awesome - can never go wrong!

5 Stars: Consistently one of the best in philly (by by remy4378 at Citysearch)

I have been dining at Buddakan a couple times a year since the late 90's. I have always been a great fan of the upscale yet casual (family style) mode of dining. Even after 10 years, the space is trendy and in touch without being overbearing on the trend factor. We had sat night reservations at 7 and were promptly seated upon arrival.

My girlfriend and I started off with the ceviche trio that was on special. The fish was properly sliced and the flavour and texture was spot on. Loved the fluke with halapeno and tangerine. The texture of the fluke coupled with the sweetness of the tangerine and appropriately counteracted the heat of the halapeno. For entrees we had the shrimp pad thai which was tasty yet light on heat (not what you would get at a thai restaurant) and the dry aged beef. Th portions are huge so we opted for the small portion of beef (still 8-9oz.) The Beef was accompanied with frites and caramelized onion soy sauce. I have always been a fan of this dish and it is very good for sharing as the steak is perfectly sliced (not to mention perfectly cooked.) For dessert we had the chocolate bento box. It is simply justified gluttony at this point but oh so good. Service was attentive, prompt and not overbearing.

Buddakan has been a good faithful choice for a non formal night out for ages and will contnue to.....

4 Stars: fantastic food ! (by by vincent2 at Citysearch)

I decided to take my fiance to Buddakan for a last minute Valentine's dinner . It ended up being a great decision. We had no reservations but the hostess [ Janine ?] welcomed us and assured that it would definetly be worth the wait and then directed us to the bar . The drinks were a bit expensive but the bartender couldn't have been nicer , considering it was busy . We were seated sooner then expected and we were lead to a quaint table near the bar . We devoured a calamari filled salad which our server recomended we try . It was large enough for us to share , with some to spare . It was very flavorful and fresh tasting! The salmon was incredible which was accompanied by several rolls of delicious cream cheese sushi . The desserts sounded quite original . We decided on the donuts , which came out warm and delicious , with a trio of dipping sauces to try. The price for a wonderful night out was well worth it ! We left happy and full ! I would definetly go to this restaurant again . A great place for a romantic dinner .

4 Stars: Food is superb, just be wary of this place for a special event (by by ktsteven3 at Citysearch)

I chose Buddakan for my boyfriend's birthday. Neither of us had been there before. It was a bit pricey ($225 for 2), but the sophistication and unique flavors of the food lived up to it. We started off with the kobe beef appetizer and a special-of-the-day sashimi yellowtail tuna appetizer - YUM. They were both so flavorful with great texture. Following this, we elected to share the angry lobster (taking advice from a review I had read on this website). It was plenty big enough for two - succulent, and so creatively plated. My only problem with this place (and I had also read this on this site) was that when it was time for dessert (which we would have normally passed on because we were so full), the dessert came out with no sparkler. That really let me down, as I had reminded them twice, even on that very day when they had called me to confirm the reservation, and I had sat there during dinner watching 3 other sparkler desserts being delivered. I couldn't really say anything when we arrived, obviously, as it was a surprise. I brought it up with the host as I was leaving, and he made an excuse that it had been so busy when we came in that it was his fault - he hadn't alerted the waiter . He gave me his card and told me if there was ever anything he could do for me, like a reservation on a busy night, he would do it. Sorry, but it's not the kind of place I can afford to go to regularly, and nothing can make up for the nearly perfect night that they had messed up. A coupon for a percentage off a future visit would have been more classy and made me more apt to come back. Presently, I have mixed feelings. As far as the food goes, however, 5 stars.

5 Stars: LOVED IT!! (by by chan82 at Citysearch)

I went here with my boyfriend for his birthday and loved it!!! We started at the bar where I got a drink called "Geisha" which was wonderful and fruity (great for the ladies). The wait staff was extremely friendly and attentive. We ordered kobe beef satay and edamame ravioli. The kobe beef was great and came with vegetable tempura which I love. We ordered the edamame ravioli because of all the rave reviews on the website, but I didn't like those at all. I have always enjoyed edamame at japanese restaurants but the cheese was very overwhelming. We then shared the angry lobster which was pricey at $75 but completely worth it. Dont let them fool you! I asked the waitress if it was enough for two people and she said maybe - well my boyfriend and I were stuffed and still had some left to take home. It was incredible! It had huge chunks of lobster and veggies like bok choy, cauliflower, red peppers, brocolli and carrots. YUM! and on the bottom was a very generous layer of lobster mashed potatoes. We then had the chocolate bento box - which totally lived up to my expectations! They even brought it with a sparkler because it was my boyfriends birthday. The bill was $127 - 160 with tip. But I definitely think it was worth it. YOU MUST GO HERE IF YOU ARE IN PHILLY!!!

3 Stars: Average experience (by by marisadz at Citysearch)

We went there on a Thursday evening and were seated upstairs. It was really loud - the music was a little overbearing, we could barely hear each other. The food was good, but we didn't think it was anything very special. The best parts of the meal were the drinks and the dessert. It wasn't great enough to warrant a second try for the price.

5 Stars: Excellent food keeps us coming back (by by monjeera at Citysearch)

My boyfriend and I have been to Buddakan several times. It's not exactly in our price range, but we are willing to splurge every few months for the experience. I order the duck every time-- it's full of flavor and tender and absolutely delicious. I've only eaten duck at one other restaurant in my life-- Tangerine, another Starr restaurant, and I didn't like it there. Now I don't think I will ever eat duck anywhere else besides Buddakan! The rest of the food is delicious as well. The ambience is an experience in itself, with the dim lights and giant Buddha towering over a brightly lit main table. It does tend to get loud in there during peak times. It also seems to be less of a family place and more for couples and groups of friends. But we did eat at the Buddakan on the boardwalk in Atlantic City last week and there were lots of families with kids there, so I guess it just depends on where you go.

5 Stars: Wonderful meal, beautiful ambience (by by dag123 at Citysearch)

This was one of the best meals we had while visiting Philadelphia. (We found it on the gophila site). The decor is fabulous, and because our reservations were for an early lunch, we got a great table. Probably wouldn't have had that table if it had been a weekend evening. Everything we had was delicious, but our favorite believe it or not, was the lobster fried rice. This is not the ubiquitous fried rice in most asian restaurants. It had some really complex flavors, and was light, not oily. My husband, who generally detests most "Chinese" food, was really wowed by it. I had the big bowl of wonton soup, which I rarely order because it's usually just a bowl of salty chicken broth, but I had a feeling this might be different, and it was. Chock full of dumplings, pork and greens. My son had the miso, which is also often pretty uninteresting, but this was delicious, too. It's not a cheap lunch, but in our opinion, well worth it. It was a great experience all around, and I'm anxious to try the Buddakan in NYC now. Service was also good.
4 Stars: great night out (by by esynergy at Citysearch)

My husband and I went to Buddakan last night for our first wedding anniversary. Even though there were people all around us and it was slightly loud, it was a romantic atmosphere. We started with the chicken dumplings, and then had the lamb chops and wok cashew chicken as our entrees. The portions were large, which I didn't expect at an upscale restaurant like this one. It was served family-style on large plates so we shared the entrees between the two of us. We had creme brulee for dessert which was amazing! Overall service was good, although when I called to make my reservation I told them it was my anniversary and they said they would put sparklers in our food and they didn't. I was a little disappointed in that, but it didn't affect how I feel about the restaurant.

5 Stars: It gets better every time! (by by phillykim at Citysearch)

My husband and I went in to Buddakan for our 5th anniversary. I have only been in with large groups so I was a little skeptical about coming in for a romantic dinner for two. We sat on the second floor right along the glass and I would recommend that spot to any couple looking for a great night out. It was perfect. Beautiful view and much more intimate than I expected. Everyone was so nice and friendly. The service was outstanding and everything we ordered was extraordinary. The filet and the shrimp are definite must orders. For dessert we had the chocolate tart. The Big O. Seriously. I think my husband was jealous.

1 Stars: Buddakan is not baby friendly. Babies are not welcomed in this restaurant. (by by mozee73 at Citysearch)

I went there with my wife, my 3-year-son and a friend on a Saturday evening. It was 5pm and the place was not busy yet.
We wanted to sit near the Buddha statue on the first floor, but they sat us upstairs in a corner right in front of the bathroom entrance, eventhough half the tables on first floor was empty.
The dishes arrived so fast, like 5 minutes after we ordered. We wondered if it was cooked earlier before we arrived and then they just heat it up for us. Maybe someone else cancelled the order and they just passed it on to us.
Then as the food was brought in, my baby started crying and yelling. The manager had the nerve to come over and said to my wife: "Ma'am, can you take it outside."
My wife didn't even get a chance to finish her dinner and had to take our baby out. It was such a shock to me that I couldn't think straight at that time. I foolishly finished my dinner, paid the bill and left to meet my wife outside.
If I could do it all over again, I would have asked my wife to remain seated as my baby has every right to be in that place as anyone else. If they insisted that we take our baby out, then we could have just walked out without finishing our dinner and without bothering to pay the bill, since we are being kicked out.
This restaurant is not baby friendly. It's like those days when we see signs hanging out in some restaurants that says: "Colored People are not served here."
They might as well hang out a sign that says: "Babies are not welcomed here."

2 Stars: If you like the crowded bar scene, this is the place (by by fooodee at Citysearch)

This is a nice place with fairly prompt waitstaff, bustling bar scene and the ambiance of a trendy place. Definitely nice place if I were to meet somebody. However, in their attempt to re-create the Asian dishes, things were not executed well. While my dishes were average, the black cod came out undercooked while the waitstaff claimed undercooking it is the norm. I have no problems with rare Tuna. The only problem with cod is that I ocassionally encounter parasites (large worms) when I cook them, so the chef should have enough sense to make sure if I were to eat a worm, it's at least cooked.

2 Stars: Food left a lot to be desired (by by babushk at Citysearch)

The service was good, atmosphere as expected. Of the four dishes we ordered, the first one--Edamame ravioli was excellent. I wish I could say the same about the rest of our dinner. Tuna pizza would have been much better on very thin bread rather than regular pita bread. Calamari salad had breaded calamari--grilled would complement the salad much better and the sauce was way too acidic. Chilean Seabass had sauce that was too strong and overpowering. I'm not the pickiest of eaters, but three of four dishes were simply unpleasant. On the plus side, the bill was very reasonable as we did not drink. Given our experience with main courses, we had little desire to stay for desert.

Be very careful as to what you are ordering as the menu is very uneven. Edamame ravioli is great, though.

5 Stars: Great restaurant! (by by monamission at Citysearch)

My girlfriend and I were looking for the perfect place to celebrate her birthday. Buddakan came highly recommended by some of our friends-- I am really glad we followed their advice. We arrived on a Sunday night, it was pretty busy but they sat us right on time. My girlfriend is a huge meat lover so we tried the filet mignon that has wasabi on it and the new shortrib Chowfun dish. They were both absolutely delicious. The place looked great, our server was superb and our experience as a whole was unforgetable. My girlfriend wants us to got every year now.

5 Stars: Wow! Wow! Wow! (by by jfisherpa at Citysearch)

My boyfriend and I went in there this Friday and didn't have reservations. We knew we were taking a chance but decided to go in anyways. There was a super long wait but the hostess was so helpful and offered the bar and to call another starr restaurant! I've been wanting to go to Buddakan for a while so we decided to stay and take our chances at the bar. Let me tell you... it was soo great! The upstairs bar was definitely less crowded and Jenny (the bartender) was an absolute doll. She really took care of us even though it was super busy. The food = the reason why they're so popular! Seabass and Duck were out of this world and the bento box was absolutely sinful. The mai tai's were "smashing" in more ways than one! I give the buddha an A+++ !

5 Stars: Great Food, Great Service, Great Company (by by nmhuynh at Citysearch)

My best friend and I were celebrating her taking the MCATs on Saturday night. We had both been dying to try Buddakan and figured this was the best excuse to go. I made reservations late in the week (on a Thursday afternoon) and the hostess was very nice and very accomodating. She explained that the night was basically full, but she could seat us at the communal table at 6:30 (or a private table at 11:30). I agreed to the communal table with a bit of hesitation. Because of congestion caused by the gala in Center City, we ended up being about 20 min late for our reservation. Worrisome, as any of you who have been late for other high-end Center City restaurant reservations would know. But I was shocked at how nice and friendly the hosts were, and we were seated immediately. Our waiter (Eric) quickly came over to bring us water and take our drink orders. He gave my best friend a perfect recommendation that suited her taste. Admittedly, the space is a little tight, but if you're a party of 2, it's fine! (It probably helps that the people we were sitting next to were also very nice!) Since we weren't that hungry, we decided to share three courses. Our first course was the ginger infused salmon which was delicious! The salmon tasted like fresh smoked salmon (though, I forgot to get confirmation) and the seaweed chips and wasabi cream dipping sauce were perfect pairings. We had the calamari salad -- the small portion is perfect for 2 people to share. The large portion is, in fact, LARGE!! (Probably good for 4 ppl). The salad was perfectly dressed - not too sour or sweet or salty. And we had the special entree, which was a Japanese flaky fish (I can't remember which one right now). It was seared with shiitake mushrooms and asparagus -- DELICIOUS! We weren't planning on on dessert (we were stuffed!), but our waiter brought over a special dessert -- fruit sushi. It was kiwi, cantoulope and cherry wrapped in coconut rice and it was the perfect ending to our perfect meal!

I have heard so much hype about this place I decided that I had to try it for my 21st bday. I made reservations about a month ahead of time just so I could have the comfort of knowing I had a table. A group of 10 of us went and it was the BEST experience I've had. We ordered a lot of food even though everything was family style. We got crab fried rice, calamari salad, pad thai, chicken dumplings, and pizza for appetizers. For entrees everyone got things from lobster to chicken to duck and everything was great! The dessert is to die for. We got every dessert on the menu so I can personally say everything was devine!!! I would come back to Buddakan in a heartbeat. The staff was so friendly and helpful. The place is beautiful and I reccomend getting the communal table if possible, because that's where all the action happens.

It was my first time going to Buddakan, and I will definately be back! The room is gorgeous and filled with beautiful people. I have been to a few of the Starr restaurants but, Buddakan byfar outshines them all. Our server was so personable yet proffessional. She was knowledgable and was helpful with the suggestions she made for us. The fodd was SUBLIME! My favorite was the tuna tartar and the aged beef dishes. The best part was the pagoda and chocolate box-- we had a birthday and the server surprised us with a sparkler for the birthday boy. I have told all my friends and family about Buddakan and I will be back soon. Keep up the good job!

5 Stars: I stand corrected; The reputation is well deserved!!!!! (by by truepunjabi at Citysearch)

I have to tell you of our wonderful dining experience at Buddakan. On Sunday, July 23rd, on my wife's insistence I took my two brothers and us to Buddakan for dinner. This was a last minute decision and from what I had heard of Buddakan (pretentious, snobby, etc.), I was not sure that is where I wanted to take my family members. But I was out voted and so we ended up at Buddakan.
We got there around 10pm and I must admit from the time we entered the restaurant I was impressed, that the restaurant was busy even that late on a Sunday night. The host was polite and when we told her that we did not have a reservation, she said that is ok and she will have us seated shortly, which she did.
Now here where the fun started, because I wanted to see how me & my family will be treated. But I must admit, our servers was so nice, knowlegdeable and accomadating that the misperceprtions that I had about Buddakan started to disappear. We ordered a lot of food, including our server, Cherry Blossom, recommendations which included the Crab Tempura (app), the steamed sole (entree) and the decadent Chocolate Bento Box, with 6 different items made from the main ingredient, CHOCOLATE. My wife was in heaven with that dessert and insisted that we come back here just for dessert any & everytime we are in the city.
You know, I also noticed something that I usually do not notice in other restaurants, that the staff here seemed happy, they were smiling while working and from the staff that brought us our food to the bus boy who cleared our table, they were all engaging and nice. Even though we came in late, they close at 11pm, no one rushed us, the server even made the point to ask us if we wanted more coffee and I think at this point it was close to 12:30am.
My perceptions of this restaurant has been shattered and I truly believe that is one of the best, if not the best restaurant in the city. My wife & I will definitely be back and not just for the dessert.

Just went to Buddakan for the first time last night. My friends took me there for my birthday. Being new in town I heard thast this was the place to go and it lived up to all if my expectations. We sat at a table right near the Buddha down by the big table. What a view! Our dinner was spectacular and the presentation was amazing too. Had the angry lobster ( I think that's what it was called) and it just blew me away. We shared everything and loved it! When the dessert tray came to the table I thought I would faint. It was as beautiful as the rest of our dinner and the different flavors were amazing. I loved the banana tower thing and my friends devoured everything else. All in all, great food, great service (our server knew everything!) and the place is just unbeleivable. Everyone should try this place at least once for a birthday or whatever. You'll love it!

Buddakan is amazing. Try the Sea Bass or the Duck. The dishes were family style, so if you go as a group I would suggest order different stuff and try everything out.

Desserts are great too. Service is good. The drinks were okay but a bit overprized.

5 Stars: My favorite restaurant (by by ajtrublu at Citysearch)

Whenever I'm celebrating something, I go to Budakan. I'm not one who cares very much about ambience, but I do find it fun there. But most of all, it's the food. I have never had a dish there I haven't thought was superb. My favorites are the edamame ravioli and the chocolate bento box. I've also always had excellent service - prompt, courteous, and knowledgable. Love this place!

5 Stars: Simply Spectacular (by by dreamvision at Citysearch)

We finally got back into Buddakan. Its incredible that the rest of the city is quite in the summer and this place is just rocking. Its not a surprise, the food is incredible. Its not just that its consistently good, time and again. The drink specials are great. If you have not tried the Tantra (watermelon martini) its a must. Talk about cool you down in the summer. My favorite cocktail the Bonsai Martini, cilantro, grey goose, and lemon lime, its sounds crazy but try one and youll be hooked to.

5 Stars: Fantastic dining experience (by by alwaysontheroad at Citysearch)

We arrived 15 minutes before reservation time and was seated within seconds. The food is family style, large portions, but only a few things are enough for two people alone. We had the tuna pizza appeitizer along with the BLT sushi special (chilean sea bass with bibb lettuce and oven roasted tomatoes). We had the Angry Lobster for the entree and could quite possibly be one of the best things I've ever eaten. Creamy mashed potatoes, veggies, and a massive amount of lobster all covered in a coconut curry sauce!! The presentation was even better! For dessert - chinese doughnuts which came with chocolate, raspberry, and cream cheese dipping sauces. The wait staff was attentive the entire meal but not overbearing. Sure, its pricey. I would recommened sharing an appeitizer or two, an entree, and a dessert and you'll be good to go!

3 Stars: Fashion over food (by by jasonspear at Citysearch)

I heard so much hype about this place that I decided to give it a try. It was a miserable experience. The food was good, but everything else was nauseating. When I ordered tapwater, for example, my waitress looked at me like the paradigm of the non-tipper who wouldn't know evian from dishwater. I guess I don't, but I find people who do repulsive. The waitress was repulsive, the environment was loud in every sense and extremely distracting, although I'll admit the enormous golden Buddha is amusing enough. I've been lucky enough to eat in some nice restaurants in various parts of the world, and this is really not one of them. It is pretensious: the food is beside the point; people come here to be looked at by other people; people come here to say, "I've been to Buddakan!" So what.

Just moved into town and decided to see what all the hype was about. From start to finish our experience was a step above perfect. My edamame ravioli were sublime with just the right hint of truffle(my weakness). The lamb chops are to die for. and the banana tower was beyond dessert. Our service was efficient and on point. My waiter had an answer for everything! Loved it! Loved it! Loved it!

1 Stars: Too much of a "scene", too loud... (by by yippee1999 at Citysearch)

This place is more about the "scene" than the food. Overall, food was "good", although we were very disappointed in tuna tartare, and have had MUCH better elsewhere. Altough we had a dinner reserv., they sat us at tiny cocktail table by the bar, with uncomfortable sunken couch seat. Tables very close together. Small lamp was affixed to the table, so we were unable to make room for plates. Lamp also had cord hanging through center of table. (Dangerous!) Noise level and music very loud. I would never return to Buddakan. (Interesting how any "bad" reviews are labelled "average/not helpful". Hmmm.)

Buddakan is a really tendy asian fusion restaurant in Philadelphia. The decor is fabulous and the food is superb. I had the chilean seabass and it was the best, it literally melted in my mouth!!! All of the food is delicous there, so it's best that you try 3 courses, appetizer, entree and dessert.

I have been to Buddakan a number of times and come away satisfied on each occasion. I would not claim this as the best restaurant in Philly, but it is up there. The ambience is great for first time diners. The family style sharing of dishes is great for groups, and the overall qaulity of food good. I have had problems with being seated on time, but generally no longer then 15 minutes with a reservation. The upstairs bar is pretty neat, and the menu offers great desserts. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

I had the duck breast entree which I must say, was very juicy and flavorful. I could not get enough of the yuzu crab cocktail which came with fried seaweed(wakame).
3 Stars: What's the fuss... (by by msme at Citysearch)

One of my friends favorite restaurants, I went for my birthday to see what the hype was all about.

Seating was prompt, but we were seated in a smoking section (we were told there were no other tables available) with chain smokers on one side and, on the other, elbow-to-elbow with one of those complaining couples (I realize this dining experience wouldve been better without their company).

Thankfully, the food was quite good, and the dessert was huge and quite chocolate-y enough to satisfy my chocolate craving.

The room was dim, and too noisy for easy conversation, which is one of the main reasons I enjoy dining out, and the Buddha was not awingperhaps because I wasnt seated facing it?

I wish these trendier restaurants would create decor that was conducive to conversing without shoutingperhaps thats the point: see and be seen, hear and be heard?

Everytime I call or walk-in I wonder why it's so tough to get seated. But as soon as I finish my meal I remember exactly why. This time I sat at the bar (first time) and I was shocked at how much the bartenders knew about the food. I was there on a pretty busy night, but they still helped me with the menu and suggested some wines and cocktails. Food was good as usual; bartender recommended BBQ Pork and it was awesome. The place has very good energy and I will keep going as long as they have room for me!

5 Stars: Great Food, Fun Experience (by by arkmanxx at Citysearch)

We dined at Buddakan on May 27. The food was excellent and well prepared. Very unusual sauces came with each dish we ordered. The many servers were excellent except for our main waitress, who was without charm, smiles, or helpful menu suggestions. Try the Bento Box for dessert (menu says enough for two, but will feed more). The atmosphere was plain, even with the gigantic Buddha in the middle of the restaurant. Despite our waitress, we would certainly go back again.

My fiance and I celebrated our one year anniversary at Buddakan on Monday night. It was rather easy to make reservations but for weekends, I suggest you call a week in advance. The second we entered, we were amazed by such beautiful decor: a massive cascading waterfall, a 10 foot Zen Buddha, dark wooden furniture. Our server was Gabriel and he was constantly taking care of us. He was WONDERFUL! We ordered Miso Tuna Tartare (with cavier), Miso Cod, and Duck Breast. All were simply delicious (especially the wasabi mashed potatoes!). The best part was the Chocolate Bento Box. Best dessert on EARTH! Dinner for two people plus some drinks = $105. Which is QUITE reasonable being a 4 star restaurant. We WILL come back!

My hub and I went on many recommendations for the 'absolute best food'! We have to disagree.
While we enjoyed our selections, we were disappointed on the quality.
Buddakan uses alot of flashy ingredients, but food just did not have a freshly prepared appeal.
The special martini I had was awful, contrary to our waiters recommendation.
It is a fun place to be and that must be what carries this popular place.

My husband and I went to Buddakan for the first time and it was one of the best dining experiences we've ever had. From the ambience to the service to the exquisite food, it was a feast for the senses.
We had Chilean seabass and Ponzu chicken and they were to die for! The desserts menu was extensive and delicious. The banana tower and the dip sum doughnuts were close to heaven. Buddakan is highly recommended for many reasons!!

4 Stars: Impressed (by by mikesurf at Citysearch)

Not being a huge fan of Philly, and the fact that so many restaurants are not even open on Sunday, Buddakan was a totally pleasant suprise. The meal was excellent, The Zen-Gria was a great Zan-gria variation, and the dessert ( warm min donuts) all were top rate. $92 before tip for two was pricey but worth it. Check it out.

what a great dining experience--- A+ from concept to drinks, arrival to seating, dinner to dessert. waitstaff was confident, knowledgeable and attentive. i almost expected more pushiness, like i usually encounter in new york, but the service was refreshing, youthful, and polished. dishes were inspired and delicious across the board. sake list was brief but tasty. decor impressive. hostesses and were attentive and warm...even the car valets were impeccably prompt. dining at buddakan made me feel like royalty.

You can find items you don't like at any restaurant and I think some people just like to be contrary, esp when 9 out of 10 say it's great. The food here is VERY good and you get huge sized portions compared to most "fancy" places. I've been there a few times and I've always walked out thinking it was well worth the price.

3 Stars: Not my Starr favorite... (by by Fashion_Guru at Citysearch)

I think Stephen Starr did much a better job with Tangerine. Although I did enjoy Buddakan, I didn't think it deserved all the pizzazz. Maybe it was because we were seated in a table for two up near the bar, but I felt rushed out of there. Food was good, although overpriced. If you are going to spend the money, go to Tangerine instead.

5 Stars: Budda-licious!!! (by by Stephen_Cartwright at Citysearch)

Man, what a night! My girlfriend and I stepped in not realizing the experience we were in for. Everything from the food (if you've never been introduced to edamame ravioli, now's as good a time as any), to our top notch service (Pamela was very knowledgeable, professional, and will be one of the main reasons we come back), to the folks at the door (everyone thanked us for coming), even the value and concept (sharing huge portions is a great idea and there's plenty to go around). It was a true experience filled with warmth and grace. I knew there was a reason I kept kicking myself for not visiting downtown more often. Now, I'll just make sure the kicking directs me down Chestnut Street. Buddakan rules, baby! Spread the word...

5 Stars: Amazing (by by Godzuki24 at Citysearch)

The culinary experience at Buddakan is one which I did not expect to have. The Lobster fried rice was perfectly prepared and was simply delicious. The Edamame ravioli touches off a sublime taste adventure in your mouth. The Dry Aged Beef runs the gauntlet from sweet to bitter all while bringing a smile to one's face. I look forward to coming back to try some of the other treaures of the Buddakan. Service from the (almost) model worthy attractive staff was good to great and a pleasant suprise. Buddakan's location is great for tourists too- located just across the street from local attractions. <p>To simply label Buddakan as "fusion" or "nuevo pan-asian" would be a disservice. Calling it a great meal at a decent price in a nice setting is probably more like it. Bravo, Buddakan. I'll be back.

The 18 FT Buddha gives a "distinguish" look of the place. I took my family there and they all said it was fabulous. If anyone happens to try the swordfish, never had I tried a swordfish that was not fishy until I went to this place.
