    .

My 91-year-old father-in-law was admitted to the Paul's Run assisted living unit recently. We attempted to visit him on the 2nd day of his residence there and were turned away because a perfect stranger, a con man, had obtained Dad's power of attorney and had instructed them to turn us away. After a half hour of arguing, we called the Philadelphia Police and, finally, we were admitted. We did straighten-out this mess, and the management turned cordial, but we still just moved him to The Fountains at Millbrook in Millbrook, NY. At Paul's Run, which is relatively attractive and clean, at least, we found the major stresses to be on security and regulations. We did find many very nice caretakers, but the majority seem quite apathetic and Dad was most definitely not treated with respect. He was neither abused nor neglected, but he wasn't loved. This might seem an odd thing to say, but at The Fountains at Millbrook, which is gorgeous and extremely well-maintained, the staff, from the maintenance crew to the director, clearly love their work and, even more, they love the residents. They have rules, too, and some of them are similar to the rules at Paul's Run, but they are enforced in spirit, not in letter. If you want a place to park a relative you don't particularly care about, Paul's Run will do. If you want a place for an elderly loved one to live-out their life in an environment full of love, mental stimulation and comfort, find another place.
