My boss at my work said that she likes to go to the William Penn inn for nice family occasions so I wanted to make Father's Day very nice for my husband/family. I called nearly a month prior to make reservations for our special family outing.
Unfortunately I regret choosing the William Penn Inn because I don't think anyone in my family was impressed. We arrived promptly at our seating time 2 p.m. and were seated right away. Our waitress was very nice. I soon told her early into the meal that I was very disappointed that it was going to be a 200.00 meal and so many of the entrees were empty. Not even a spoonful available. Many of the cold salad bowels were empty. The roast beef was down to a small pink end with mostly fat. The horseradish dressing near it not even a spoonful. Entrees including the stroganoff, fish, sweet and sour chicken and scrambled eggs all empty. It was embarasing that I had invited my family to this and disappointing that I had decided to spend my hard earned money on this. We had 7 adults in my party. All my personal family and guests. I did tell the waitress and she did report that she had advised the kitchen. Guests were standing around the hot table with plates at their side in disbelief. We had been invited to a buffet with no/little food. In this situation people just tend to fill up on bagels or fruit which is not what I had intended or paid for. By dessert time, someone in my party asked a person if more chocolate covered strawberries were available. He said he would go check. Well after 5 mins. we walked back and there was no sign of this person nor the strawberries so we asked a nice woman to please follow up with the answer. She said she would. I saw her come back another 5 minutes later but it was with a plate to start eating her self. The time was 3 pm. There must have been 15 different workers in the black/white uniform making their own plates. The begun to sworm the stations and were talking among themselves. I saw one man/employ just grab the dessert cake with out using the serving utensil. Just his fingers. You wouold have thought the place was closed and empty but we and others were still there. Needless to say 10 mins. of working on the little chocolate covered strawberry request was a waste. No answer. No one gave a hoot. Well, that concluded my first visit to the William Penn Inn. I paid 200. and left. It was not very impressive at all. No one in my party particularly cared for the meal. Quite a poor decision on my part.I regret coming to this place.

Been here once. Food was fine. Very busy. Rooms are beautiful. Very overpriced for quality and technique of food preperation.

Much better restaurants in the area for price and quality. They did burn by chicken; it had a bread coating and the cooks left it in the fryer too long.

You can tell they have been doing the same thing for so long, and they are so busy they are afraid to change.

The prices make me want to go eleswhere.

Pros: Beautiful Inn

I frequently dine at The William Penn Inn and was so pleasantly surprised during my last visit to see the new small plates on the menu. Just enough great food reasonably priced.

Dinner at the William Penn Inn last night was wonderful. The addition of the small plate menu is a creative way of enjoying William Penn Inn??s vast menu. We enjoyed it tapas style while listening to Father Jon play Jazz on the piano and sipping great wine. It was great to find a local restaurant in the suburbs with great Jazz, drinks and small plate menu! I highly recommend you check it out!!!!

the inn has always been a great place to go ive attended weddings, lunch, family parties, brunch on sundays with my girlfriends and recently for dinner. the menu is always a treat. anything that the inn does they do it very well. the restaurants are only the tip of the iceberg the inn has its own bakery and in house florist. if you dont want any doubt about a night out being worth it go to the inn you will be very happy.

Pros: live music, ambiance and menu

Good place to eat. I did ask our server if their fish was fresh. Her response was "yes, we take it right out of the freezer." I would and have gone back.

Every year, my extended family has a holiday dinner at the William Penn Inn. The decorations are so beautiful and detailed. The music is great. Christmas isn't Christmas without this holiday tradition.
Sunday brunch is, by far, my favorite. They have everything you could ever want. I can't wait for my boys to take me here for mother's day!

At lunch in the Commonwealth Club last week, I ordered a daiquiri, which turned out to be a big mistake. The waitress asked if I wanted it on the rocks or with salt, which should have given me my first clue. I explained that I wanted a traditional, non-frozen daiquiri. After a long delay, (everyone else's drinks had long been served), she brought me a frozen pina colada. When I said that wasn't a daiquiri, she became rude and abusive. Next, a man who identified himself as a bartender offered to get me a replacement. I said that if they didn't know how to make a daiquiri, that would be fine: I would order something else. No, no, he said, it's a simple matter. After a long delay, (by now our food had been served) he reappeared with a glass of flavored vodka. When I said that daiquiris were not made with vodka, he too became rude and defensive (although not as bad as the waitress had been), and said that that was the way they make them there!

The Inn has a good reputation, but its food is heavy, loaded with salt and calories, and not very good to a refined palate. The service is adequate, but information about the food is extremely limited; i.e., is the salmon wild or farm raised. For the price, one can definitely do better in the area.

Went there for Easter - lovely flowers, lovely ambience - if you can get over the fact that the place smells like an old-aged home. Granted, it was a holiday, but the food was 'eh' for the money and the server was annoyed when we weren't ready to give our food order right away. On the nice side - I lost an earring there and they are going to return it via mail so I don't have to truck out there again. That was nice.

Brunch here is not to be missed. We celebrated a family birthday here and can't wait to go back again. We had the party in a beautiful private room. The wait staff were attentive and the food stations were superb. Eggs benedict were made fresh, as well as the omlettes. Carving stations were amazing. Save room for the pastries and fresh fruits with whipped cream. Their pastry chef is an artist!

The William Penn Inn is a class act. The food had never disappointed and the service is impeccable. My all time favorite is their lobster bisque.

I am slightly biased however because my husband proposed at William Penn Inn after a delicious dinner!

The William Penn Inn is one of the most outstanding places to visit in the Philadelphia region for an elegant, delicious Sunday brunch. Service is impeccable, and everything one could desire is found at the table, from peel and eat shrimp to eggs benedict. The Inn is also a gorgeous locale for any formal wedding.

We came to WP for a small birthday party (10). We were taken to a room straight out of a Dickens novel. The room was furnished with elegant antiques. The mantle bore a georgeous floral arrangement. The table was set elegantly with fine linen and china that would make your grandmother proud. I was reminded of Thanksgiving dinners of yesteryear. The service was superb and the food excellent. Everything was perfect. In contrast to the prim and proper table settings, the ambiance was casual, cozy, and comfortable. We had a wonderful intimate 60th birhtday celebration. We were there late, but no one came to say it's closing time. The William Penn Inn is a class act. I had the best Martini ever.

My husband and I are frequent diners at the William Penn Inn and we recently visited to celebrate our anniversary and to dine in the Monet Dining Room. It was absolutely amazing! The food was absolutely spectacular, the service was excellent. We were escorted to the table where a half dozen roses were waiting for us. Along with the roses we also received a complimentary cake. I couldn't have asked for a better way to spend my anniversary!

In response to delphia's entry... who drinks daquiri's anymore??? I don't think you are telling the whole story. Everytime time I dine at the William Penn Inn (which is often) I get impecable service along with amazing food and drink. I was just there about 2 weeks ago and got a cosmo with my dinnner... it was perfect.

I just recently attended a birthday party at the William Penn Inn. I never realized how beautiful and elegant the William Penn Inn is; it was the first event I've attended there and I am now looking at the possibility of having my wedding there! It was absolutely beautiful, the service superb and the food was excellent! I highly recommend checking it out for any possible banquet function or just to simply dine there. It's such a historical building and the thought of getting married there makes me feel like a part of the history.

I just recently had dinner this past Saturday Evening in the Commonwealth Club. It was absolutely delightful. The Atmosphere is elegant. I enjoyed perfectly cooked lamb chops and it must be one of the best preparation in Philadelphia! My husband's surf and turf was a nice gourmet twist to a traditional surf and turf. The wine list was abundant and almost too much to choose from, however the kind server helped with a recommendation that complimented both of our dinners but was economical. I definitely recommend whenever you get a chance to head to the William Penn Inn to do so. My husband and I frequently dine here!

I went to a wedding recently at the William Penn Inn, and despite the bride's family requesting that the filet mignon be cooked at least medium-well, I was served a too-rare steak. I sent it back, and it was a little more cooked on the outside, but not cooked on the inside. I ate a little bit of the outer, more cooked parts to be polite, but regretted it. My mother and I both got staph from the meat and were sick all night and the next day. She had also sent the meat back for a second heating.

In addition to being tainted, it was also not a very good quality filet mignon. We were quite disappointed with the William Penn Inn, which is very highly regarded in the area.

I had my wedding reception at this Inn which is one of their specialties. I was treated like a queen by the staff and well as my guests. The food was superior, I still get compliments that it was the best dinner they ever had at a wedding. They offer complete wedding packages but it does not come cheap. Don't even think about trying to negotiate a better price. It will not happen and they really don't need to because they service speaks for itself.

William Penn Inn is the state's oldest country inn, and it contains old world charm mixed in with the modern conveniences of today. This is a great bed and breakfast to choose to stay at. The staff are warm and accomadable and the food is great! The rooms are beautiful. This will be a very memorable stay. I highly recommended. They are opened daily and accept all major credit cards.

The food, service and ambience are consistently perfect. One of the MOST romantic restaurants you could ever possibly dine at. Given the consistently superb quality of the food, the excellent service, extensive wine list and the elegant decor, the menu prices are VERY reasonable for what you receive in return. We got married in the Carriage Room 9/29/02 and Shelley made sure everything was perfect on our big day. Worth every penny we spent here! Stays in guest suites are great too!

We're not seafood fans, so we found the menu a little limiting, but decent. The food was well prepared and it was a nice enough place, but I thought it was a bit overpriced. Certainly a place to go for a special occasion, but not a normal night out. A better steak can be had at the Longhorn and a much better Prime Rib value can be had at both "The Trappe" & "My Freinds Tavern" although you sacrafice the atmosphere.

Beautiful place with different dining rooms. Classic fancy restaurant menu with a few more modern touches. The food is all prepared beautifully and served by respectful but still friendly servers. I like that they still have an old-fashioned salad bar...it makes me feel a bit like I'm somewhere that's been around forever (I was born in 1970 and ALL restaurants had salad bars when I was a kid). The rack of lamb is beyond superb.
