I walked into Adolf Biecker in Wayne, PA for a consultation. I immediately sensed "attitude" from two women conversing behind the reception counter (they were not the receptionists). I requested a lead colorist with the receptionist. Five minutes later a colorist came out who had a couldn't-care-less-attitude. She didin't smile and appeared burned out. The lighting at the consltation area was dim and ridiculous for a salon. Afterwards, I reluctantly booked an appt. for the following week. The same two women were still behind the counter, now whispering, and looking over at me. They were utterly unprofessional. If they have the need for gossiping or whispering or whatever they were doing, they should do it out of sight. The following day I cancelled the appointment. I would not take the chance at this salon. I have traveled all over the world and stayed at the finest places and know how people with class should conduct themselves in public.

The atmosphere is amazing there, you are hovering over the park, watching the people running around in the heat while you sip your tea and get pampered. Erica does my highlights and introduced me to balayage, where she paints them directly onto your hair instead of using the foils, it takes about half the time it used to take me to get my foils and is more natural looking. Jen cuts my hair, she is really creative and always feel amazing leaving her chair with a great blow out. On the spa side Rachel does my waxing, she's thorough and has a gentle touch, have gotten a few facials from her and she used hot stones which was an amazing treat! I love my girls there, they spoil me and help me stay beautiful.

The Adolf Biecker Spa & Salon is, by far, the best salon in the city. With every interaction, I am met with diligent staff members and highly skilled colorists and stylists. The salon has all the great services of every high end salon in New York City and the great part is, the staff at here is so warm and welcoming! Being new to Philadelphia, the salon staff made my first visit earlier everything I expected - I experienced high level quality services, a lovely environment, warm staff and a perfect location on Rittenhouse. I would recommend to anyone to visit and compare themselves. You'll see what I do, a great salon and spa..

Pros: Excellent services

Cons: No cons!

The salon has a really modern atmosphere, to start. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, too.

Secondly, Erica colors my hair and she's great! She not only does quality work, but is creative and has a way of bringing out the person you want to be through fabulous color. She's the first colorist to convince me to get blonde highlights and I LOVE it!

This salon was too busy and to chaotic for me to stay. They had bad attitudes like they were better than me and I left. I didn't like the hair color I saw walking out of the salon.

Steer clear of Roberta. I had the worst massage ever at Adolf Biecker today from Roberta. It had been a rough week, and I thought I would cut out of work early on Friday afternoon and get a massage. After striking out trying to get an appointment at Rescue (my usual massage spot), I tried Adolf Biecker, figuring that it was nearby and in a nice hotel, so it should be good. Um, not so fast. The facilities were ok, but the real problem was Roberta.

Oh, Roberta. I am hesitant to trash someone's ability to practice her chosen profession, but I would hate for someone to waste $100 and an hour on this massage. The word that comes to mind in describing the massage is unskilled. It honestly felt like my husband (who is an attorney, not a massage therapist) rubbing cold sunscreen on me. It was weird when she started with my feet, and it just got worse. I was laying there thinking, "What is she doing? Is she a professional massage therapist? Was she trained? Can I stand this for a full hour?" At one point she had my hand pinned back to the middle of my back. It wasn't painful, just annoying. When I felt her pressing into my kidneys, a big massage no-no, I knew it was time to go.

I decided that I would tell Roberta that I had to go to the bathroom. I came back and explained that it just wasn't working for me. Frankly, she did not seem surprised. I would guess this was not the first time it happened to Roberta. When I checked my watch back in the locker room, I realized that I had only been in the massage for about 20 minutes.

I asked to speak with the manager. I told her that I have been to a lot of massage therapists at different spas in Philly, and I had never ever even considered walking out in the middle. I told her that Roberta's touch felt unskilled and amateurish. I asked whether they had confirmed that Roberta had formal training.

The manager responded that Roberta had several years of experience, which is not the same as training. The manager swore that Roberta had regular repeat customers. Maybe it was just a bad match between me and Roberta, but, like I said, I have had a lot of massages and this is the first time I ever considered leaving. The only bright spot was that they did not even suggest that I should pay for the service.

Do not go here for a bikini wax. I had a horrible experience. I ended up with a major burn and worse of all I had major bumps worse than anything I had every experienced with shaving. And they didn't get the hair at the roots, so there was stumble coming out of the bumps. It was extremely painful and looked horrible. It truly impacted my ability to enjoy my vacation. I could not wear a bathing suit because of the bumps/reddness. I could wear jeans due to the pain; nor could I go running or biking of any of the other fun things that one normally does on vacation.

I have had numerous bikini waxes before at other spas and never had any issues. When I called I was basically told that this was normal, that I should put on ice and neosporin. I was told that all the bumps should be expected. I always got bikini waxes to avoid the bumps from shaving. what a waste of money.

To start with, the receptionists were decidedIy unfriendly. I don't expect to be wined and dined, but at a reputable high end salon and spa, I do expect more than indifference from your employees.

I waited for my service in a "relaxation room". Unfortunately, I waited for about 30 minutes before my esthetician arrived. That is an unacceptable amount of time to wait for a service.

I was then subjected to THE most painful brazilian wax I have ever experienced. I know it is not a comfortable thing, and I always prepare by taking ibuprofin beforehand to counteract the pain and inflammation. It did not help. I'm not sure my technician really knew what she was doing. She did not wait for the cold wax to harden before she tried to pull it off, and as a result I had to sufer while she attepted to pick the edge of the wax. The was a lot of ripping and tugging with very slow results. Also, she did not do a complete job. Once she managed to, painfully, remove the hair in the front, I was not asked to flip over to remove any hair in the back. Of course, after the pain I didn't want to persue it. When I got home and inspected her work, I discovered a very obviously uneven job. VERY OBVIOUS. Unfortunately, she never had me inspect her work with a mirror, or else I would have requested that the one side look the same as the other.

I did not spend 55$ to recieve a horrid service, with terrible results, after waiting for nearly a half hour past my appointment time. I expected far better than that. If I wanted someone to do a crappy job, I would have just gone to one of the nail shops on Sansom St.

Don't waste your time or money, you'll be as disapointed as I am.

yes the salon is somewhat older and sometimes and can even be a bit shabby. they are usually busy and may not get you in on time. but oh is it worth it! i have curly, frizzy, coarse thick hair that no one has ever cut appropriately. when it's wet it's curly, but i like to wear it straight--this means my hair is always cut too short. not here. i don't know about any other stylists, but i do know that Assum cuts hair beautifully. so much so that i have been going to him for almost 4 years and now my mother in law and sister in law visit him too. he doesn't bother me and there isn't a lot of chit chat which i like. going to the salon is my escape and i don't want to have to spend it making small talk. i love the shampoo, it makes my scalp tingle and the smell of the aveda products is absolutely wonderful. i can understand this place might put some people off, but i wouldn't go anywhere else, even with the $80 price tag.

I was so happy with my experience at Adolf Biecker that I just wanted to share it with everyone. I've been wearing my make-up the same boring way for years and decided that it was finally time to change it up. I visited the salon and was impressed by the peaceful atmosphere.
Additionally, the aesthetician who did my make- up was WONDERFUL! She has a great eye for color and recommend colors which were not normally in my palette but which ended up looking beautiful. I almost didn't recognize myself when she was finished working her magic. But don't confuse that with using excess product. She just opened my mind to using different, more flattering shades which drew attention to my eyes and lips.
Thank you, Rachel for helping me to recognize and highlight my best features. You have changed my life!!
P.S. I've already received tons of compliments from my friends and have recommended that they come in to see you, so get ready!!

I'm not one to reveal beauty secrets, but if I were, I'd so write about a certain aesthetician at this place, who is becoming the absolute go-to person for every woman in my Rittenhouse-area office of well-heeled women. She's a whiz with the wax (buh-bye stragglers!). What's more, ever since she did my makeup for one of those you-gotta-look-fabulous media events, I've been copying her methods and getting a wealth of compliments. Fine. I'll tell you who it is. It's Rachel. She is fan-tastic.

I recommend Lorraine for hair, she always does a wonderful job. I've been going to her for many years and trust her opinion. In fact I just received a compliment on my hair by a stranger in a coffee shop the other day and I haven't had it cut in months. And I recommend Jonathan for color. I've only been going to him for a short time but he always does such a nice job.

I started going to Adolf Biecker when I met one of their stylists and he suggested I come to the salon to try it out three years ago. I am so glad that I did! The salon is run like clockwork. I have very rarely waited past my appointment time, and never by more than five minutes. Even if my stylist is running late with another client, she always comes over to talk to me about what I want done and sets me up to get shampooed while she finishes up her last client. The salon also smells so clean with all of the Aveda products that they use, and the view over Rittenhouse Square is gorgeous. I have gone to three stylists depending on who is available when I make my appointment, Jenn, Tina and recently Stephanie, and I have been really happy with all three. All of the stylists do great work and are very efficient. The staff work hard to make sure every client leaves happy. I have also used the spa services at the salon, and the spa is just as well run and professional as the salon. I definitely recommend both. The salon can be expensive, but I have made the mistake of going to cheaper salons and they never measure up. The extra $25 is worth it for the professional and courteous way people are treated at Adolf Biecker.

I had my hair cut by Ashley and I just love it. And to top it off, while I was getting my hair done I noticed in the mirror two familiar faces and I realized it's Demi Moore and Parker Posey. behind me So if it wasn't enough that my hair looks great, I was also pleasantly surprised. This haircut was just the change I was looking for and I feel great, Thank you, Ashley. I'll be seeing you soon.

Whitneyanne after reading your review I must tell you I am suprised by your experience. I was married during the month of May and Erin the Wedding Coordinator was so helpful arranging appointments for my Wedding Party, all we needed to do was arrive ready to be pampered. We began our day with a massage followed by a facial, mani & pedi, hair and makeup. It was absolutely amazing how peaceful the day was. I left so relaxed it was hard to believe I was getting married in just a few hours.

My friends and I visitied Adolf Biecker recently for masages, facials, and manicures and had a fabulous time! From checking-in, to checking-out, the front desk was very accomodating catering to our group, and the services are the best I have had in the city. I loved my La Stone massage and Elemental Facial and we had a great time in the Nail Reteat all getting our nails done at the same time. I look forward to returning to Adolf Biecker!

Two days before my sister's wedding, I visited the Adolf Biecker salon for a makeup application and a manicure. A complete disaster, so much so that I wish I'd never gone. The manicure peeled off within 24 hours, so that I had to redo myself right before a wedding.
As for the makeup advice from Rachel, it was wrong in every way. She ignored my stated preferences and concerns, such as my love of the Aveda lipstick in Schizandra that I was wearing and the Aveda translucent loose powder that I wanted to purchase more of. Instead, she wiped off my lipstick and globbed on some awful gloss that made my mouth appear as if it were bleeding, and dabbed gold dust on my bottom lip, resulting in an unflattering mess. Worse, she insisted that I purchase the Aveda Dual Foundation in Cream, even though my skin requires very little coverage. I could not tell in the unnatural light of the salon how wrong it was for me-- too thick and white, hiding and aging my skin instead of enhancing it. Besides, I was too distracted by the disgusting lip cosmetics to notice what else was wrong with her application. Of course her colleagues in the salon gushed about how pretty my makeup was, so I felt pressured to buy what she suggested.
Having naively followed Rachel's advice about the powder foundation, I ended up looking like a dead clown at my sister's wedding. Although upon application it appeared alright, within an hour it thickened into a white pasty mask. Had I been encouraged to stick with what I knew I liked, or at least to test out this new product in natural light before the big event, I could have been spared the embarrassment of wedding photos with me sporting the ugliest face I have ever had the misfortune to show in public.
Since then I visited the Aveda store at Liberty Place, where all of the employees agreed that Rachel's suggestion was totally inappropriate for me.
I cannot understate how poorly the folks at the Adolf Biecker salon prepared me for my sister's wedding.

UPDATE: I cannot seem to escape the deleterious consequences of my visit to Adolf Biecker Salon in June before my sister's wedding. The official photo album was just published, and in each and every picture I look like a dead goth clown. The powder recommended by Rachel is loaded with SPF (8% titanium dioxide), such that in flash photography, its light-reflecting properties have a nightmarishly whitening "ghost" effect. Having researched makeup for photographs on the Internet and in stores, I am now aware that any decent makeup artist should have known not to recommend this type of cosmetic for participation in a wedding. I deeply regret not having done my research beforehand. But then, I'm not paid to be the makeup expert.

Worst manicure and makeup advice ever. Ruined my enjoyment of my sister's wedding.??

She ignored my stated preferences and concerns, such as my love of the Aveda lipstick in Schizandra that I was wearing and the Aveda translucent loose powder that I wanted to purchase more of. Instead, she wiped off my lipstick and globbed on some awful gloss that made my mouth appear as if it were bleeding, and dabbed gold dust on my bottom lip, resulting in an unflattering mess. Worst of all, she insisted that I purchase the Aveda Dual Foundation in Cream, even though my skin requires very little coverage. I could not tell in the unnatural light of the salon how wrong it was for me-- too thick and too white, hiding and aging my skin instead of enhancing it. Besides, I was too distracted by the disgusting lip cosmetics to notice what else was wrong with her application. Of course her colleagues in the salon gushed about how pretty my makeup was, so I felt pressured to buy what Rachel suggested.
I cannot understate how poorly the folks at the Adolf Biecker salon prepared me for my sister's wedding, and in fact, permanently damaged my memories of it.

Two days before my sister's wedding, I visited the Adolf Biecker salon for a makeup application and a manicure. A complete disaster, so much so that I wish I'd never gone. The manicure totally peeled off within 24 hours, so that I had to redo myself right before a wedding. This has never happened to me anywhere else before.

I called to have a haircut/highlight and they insisted that I must come in for a consultation, first. Who in the world ever heard of this? What a terrible use of time. I understand what they are trying to accomplish, but I just don't have time for that and in my mind, it's a deterrent. I promptly cancelled and found another salon.

I had an appointment for a massage with a therapist (Doreen) this past Sunday and it was such a horrible experience. When she introduced herself, she didn't even say hello; she simply said "ready" in the rudest way possible. She then complained that she was booked solid all day and stressed out. Needless to say, this was not a good way to start out a relaxing massage. She rushed through the entire massage and put nothing into it. I have had several massages in my life, and this woman has a really horrible energy. I walked into it relaxed and walked out completely stressed out. I said something to the front desk and they said that they were going to talk to her but I got the feeling that they thought I was just trying to get a free massage. She ruined my day, so Im writing this review so no one goes to her and has their day ruined by her as well.

I went to Adolf Biecker for the first time on a gift card for my birthday and had a fabulous time! The staff members were helpful and friendly, and the services were memorable! I plan to bring my group of friends there for a full day of pampering since Adolf Biecker is spacious enough to accomodate large spa parties. I can't wait to go back and experience more relaxing and rejuvenating services!

Adlof Biecker is a great place if you want to be pampered. The massage staff was excellent and did a great job making me feel relaxed and comfortable!! As for the salon. I had THE best haircut ever!! Gina made the experience a great one. She was curtious and friendly and my hair looked better than it ever had before. I highly recommend Gina and will go back to her in the future.

I cannot say this based on actually experiencing the spa, but I had an appointment there which was rudely cancelled at the last minute with barely any warning and zero accomodation. It was the day before my wedding, and I had scheduled a massage to relax a bit, and when I got home from running errands there was a message saying "Sorry, your therapist didn't show up, we have to cancel your appointment". When I called and asked it they could reschedule me with someone else, they said no, not that day. All I got was a brusque "sorry" for ruining the whole day (by cancelling the one appointment I had been looking forward to all month). It was ridiculously unprofessional, first to have staff simply not show up, and not to have any backups to fill in, and to not offer any accomodation at all. I find it particularly offensive considering if I had cancelled with only a few hours notice I would have been charged the full price (I had to give my credit card number when making the reservation). But apparently, despite this policy, there is no recourse for customers when they cancel at the last minute. Totally, ridiculously unprofessional. I won't even bother to make an appointment there again and I recommend you don't bother either.

My husband and I went to Adolf Biecker for a very special wedding anniversary. I made the reservation 6 weeks in advance and the salon called the day before to confirm. We arrived a 1/2 hour before our appointments only to be informed that one of the massage therapists called in sick and they would not be able to give one of us an hour massage. They said they left a message that morning letting us know. I later found out that they called at 12:00pm, a mere 4 hours prior to my appointment. First of all, if I called 4 hours prior to my appointment to cancel I would have been charged a cancellation fee. Second of all, they acted like it was no big deal that we were inconvenienced and that it was my problem, not theirs. They "made it up to us" by offering one of us a 1/2 massage if "we really hurried". The staff made no other attempts to apologize, offered nothing else for the inconvenience and never bothered to walk us around to show us where the amenities were. I had to have another spa customer show me where the pool, steam room and sauna were, only to discover that the steam room was filthy and the sauna was turned off. To top it all off, I received a sports massage that was mediocre at best. If it was their idea of deep tissue, I'd hate to see what their light pressure massage would feel like! This place was a huge disappointent and definitely not worth the money.

I took my sister here to celebrate her birthday. We had the body masque treatments and Swedish massages. It was amazing. I had never had a body masque treatment before, but the technician Galia made me feel comfortable right away and it was so relaxing. The entire staff seemed friendly and professional. My sister was asking everyone to feel how soft her skin was afterwards!!

Recently I was fortunate enough to be given a gift certificate from my husband for a day at Adolf Biecker. I enjoyed every minute of my day there. I had a fabulous facial, waxing and body service. Also, a great conditioning treatment, cut and blowdry.
The staff and facility definitely deserves the reputation it has. EXCELLENT!!!
I already booked my next three appointments.

What a disappointment. The setting looks high end until you are escorted to the dressing area and service stations, and you can see how old and dank everything is. That being said, I've had great haircuts at some old or rough-around-the-edges salons. The worst thing here is the actual service: the stylist I saw was supposedly a master stylist whose cuts are $80 (I know, these aren't NY prices but this is hardly a deal for the terrible cut) but her cut ranks among the the worst I've had. In fact, I went in to get a random bad cut fixed, after having this place highly recommended, and the "fix" is easily as bad as the problem. Right after the blow-out it didn't look too bad, and I would certainly have said something while there if I could see what a crappy job she did, but now that I'm home? My hair has calmed down from the blow-out and I see that she actually emphasized the flaws in the previous cut. I'm more lopsided than before, and lost length to boot. I'm ready to cut it all short again and start growing out from scratch -- NOT what I expected!

I adore my cuts and the color is always just what I wanted. Thanks to a wonderful Salon and a lovely and talented stylist.

I have been to spas and salons across the country and was excited to try Adolf Biecker because I had heard such glowing reviews. Frankly, I thought it was very overrated. There was nothing special about the staff or services. The hair salon was very impersonal and felt more like a production line. The cut and color were average, at best. For the money, I expected much more. The view is beautiful, but overall I think it did not live up to its reputation. If you're looking for the status of being seen at "Adolf Biecker," then this is the place for you. If you're looking for a quality spa and salon, look elsewhere.

I went to Kin for the first time and she did a fantastic job with my brows. very meticulous, she measured them to make sure they were even, the wax was the right temperature, no redness b/c she used a cool towel after waxing, and she trimmed them. I would come here again for sure.

Need a hair stylist for your wedding? Stephanie is the best. She nailed my updo on the first trial and day-of did such a beautiful job. She is kind and calming, plus, my hair stayed in place from noon until midnight. She also did my sister in law's hair for her wedding a year ago and won rave reviews from her.

I went there for a waxing, and was really surprise where they take me. The room were really small, and dark and were really incomfortable. Then when the person waxed me, she took her wax under an old sink, and I really did not feel that her wax were clean at all!! I was so surprise! and then they charged me for double! so I had to call them and they took back my money, they said there was a mistake!

First of all, I am one of the few guys to go to Adolf Bieker and have been getting my haircut from Stephanie for 3 years now. She does a very good job and is quite sweet - I agree with some of the other posts that there is a general snobby attitude although this doesn't come from Stephanie. the owners do appear to be trying to make changes. They renovated and modernized the salon and there are more stylists below the age of drawing social security. watch out for the strollers and wheelchairs and enjoy the view of the park and proximity to walnut street shopping etc..

PROS: stephanie is sweet and does a great job.
CONS: wheelchairs obstacles

I went to Stephanie at Adolf Bieker for almost two years. She was an associate at the time, so only charged $35 for a cut. It was always decent, but on the conservative side, so when her prices inched up to $50, I decided to find another place (also in hopes for a slightly more exciting/trendy haircut). I never found the salon very relaxing. It's very large and always seemed to have older clients (I was a student then so I went during the day), and had an impersonal snobby vibe. The space is large and minimilist. They do use Aveda products which is nice. Personally, I've been more happy at Liquids, and since I've moved to NYC, I go to Hair 2 Stay.

PROS: Decent cuts
CONS: Impersonal

I used Adolf Bieker for my wedding day hair - plus all my bridesmaids & my mother. They did beautiful work & we were really pleased with how everything turned out. Everyone was very sweet, but the operation seemed very disorganized. I made my appointment months in advance, called to confirm a month before the wedding & they had no record of the booking - we went through all the details again, then a week later I got yet another call to confirm, then another one a week later - each time with slightly confused/incorrect details. I faxed schedules numerous times & eventually it got worked out but it did seem to take more effort than it should have for a place with such a great reputation. On the wedding day, all our hair looked gorgeous but all the hair staff were running late even though they'd demanded we arrive early because they claimed to have appointments right after us - we did get done in time, but it was more rushed than I would have liked. All the time while we were waiting people came over to check on us & see how we were doing, which was very sweet but not very helpful. However, given the superior results I'd definitely recommend them - just book well in advance & make sure to allow plenty of time. Prices are high but in the end I thought worth it.

PROS: Fantastic results
CONS: Staff obsequious but unhelpful; high prices; disorganization

I have had the best hair treatments here: for the most stylish haircut you have ever had, ask for junior stylist Vashti: she is simply amazing, and both my husband and I love her haircuts. I have also gotten an excellent relaxer here - they did the most brilliant job. The salon is very high energy, and I'd avoid Friday and Saturdays, when its crazy and your appointment will probably start 20-30 minutes late. Sometimes the women shampooing your hair can do it a bit too "vigourously," making it a painful experience, in which case just tell them to be gentle. Highly recommend this place - never had a bad experience.
