Figs is my go-to restaurant when I want to impress out of towners, esp from NYC! Although I've sampled quite a bit from their dinner and appetizer menu, I have to say that I always return to the grilled shrimp. If you request it, you can also get it with their famous vanilla infused rice. It's not ordnarily paired together on the menu, but they take special requests with no problem! Accompanying vegetables are always perfectly prepared and I would also recommend the vegetarian platter. I cannot rave enough about the mouth watering food that they serve here and all for such reasonable prices! You cannot beat the consistency at Figs. If you don't like crowds, and they can get noisy b/c it's a real neighborhood-y and friendly place, I would recommend going during the week. The crowds are much lighter and you can get a chance to speak with the chef/owner, who really seems to care about your meal. We just ate Mother's Day brunch at Figs and my made-to-order egg white omelet was cooked perfectly: filled with fresh spinach, goat cheese and fresh tomatos. The coffee is superb. Fresh squeezed OJ -- I can't rave enough. I have ONLY gotten unobtrusive, friendly but diligent service at Figs. I cannot imagine some of the other descriptions I've read of bad service. I was forwarding this link to a friend who wants to eat somewhere close after the Art Museum, and saw some bad reviews. I was shocked as I have never ever seen anything like this. This is Morroccan food at its finest!

Cons: can get a bit noisy

My husband and I had lunch yesterday at Figs and had a wonderful surprise. Our lunch was wonderful, great soup. My salad with grilled tuna was perfect. It was quiet and a short walk from the art museum. Just great.

This was the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. My friends and I made a reservation weeks in advance, for 5 people. When we arrived, on time, they proceeded to show us to a square table made for four people, where they had squeezed in a fifth chair. I was practically sitting on top of the man at the next table, but they told us this was a "five-person table" when it obviously was not.

Next, when we ordered, they started making up ridiculous food minimums for how much we had to order. None of this was printed on the menu, and we ended up being forced to order much more food than we wanted, because if we didn't, they threatened to KICK OUT anyone at our table who didn't meet their minimum.

Then, when the bill came, they dropped it on our table, and told us that they had included the gratuity. However, their menu CLEARLY states that gratuity will be added "for parties of 6 or more" and we were five people. When we asked to see a menu, they basically threw it at us, and then said "yeah, well sometimes we do it for 5 people too." They are rude liars, and with so many great BYO's in Philly, I would recommend that you try any other restaurant before coming here.

Pros: None

Cons: The owner, the manager, and the waitresses

My boyfriend & I went here on a date night & there were too many choices of what to eat, so we just got 5 differnet appetizers to share. They were so good, all of them! We had 2 bottles of wine & they didn't complain or anything about our lengthy stay even though they were near closing time. The whole bill came to $36! For 5 appetizers! We were stuffed. Great place!

Pros: Cute & Romantic

Cons: Got a bit loud from other patrons

Would give this place NO STARS if it was possible.
3 of us sat down at an outside table. The inside was empty as were the 5 outdoor tables. We sat, ignored, for 20 mins as we watched new people sit and recieve menus, water and service. When I asked if we could have menus as well, I was snarled at. " Have you spoken to anyone?" "No, I answered. Should I have?"
I have been to this place and sent many people here. Thought the staff knew us and appreciated our repeat business. NOT SO.
The tall angry dude came out and said, " we thought you were loitering?" EXCUSE ME?
WE APOLOGIZED for any miscommunications, were treated like garbage, and will NEVER RETURN. After having friends drive in from the main line to meet us, it was an embarrasing and disgusting dining experience. Nice huge rodent the size of a cat running into the garbage bins that they keep next to the tables made our meal complete.

Even though the seats are packed tightly in, this is a great little place with a fun atmosphere. Food and service are both wonderful! Breakfast is highly recommended - yet all food is great.

l They are an angry staff who seems to be very put out having to serve anyone. I could not BELIEVE the level of arrogance displayed towards customers. The menu never changes, is very heavy for the summer, and they are always out of things. I was totaly disgusted having taken a co worker and a good friend there. Almost as obnoxious was the obvious bitching they were doing about everyone that was paying for the food the were so reluctantly serving.

Executive Chef/Owner Mustapha Rouissiya brings his character and love of food into all the dishes served here.

Brunch is by far my favorite - though any meal at Figs is sure to please.

Figs is definitely a gem of a restaurant in our city! The place is very small, but the food is phenomenal! To date, I have tried plenty of items on their menu, incuding filet mignon, tuna, crabcake (seasonal)...they were all so delicious!! The price is VERY reasonable for the quality of food that you are receiving. Two things to know: it is a BYOB and they only accept cash. So if you are going there for a special event or just to have a relaxing evening, be prepared with those two things!

I've been to this place twice now. A bunch of us ordered different entrees and tried each others' dishes. The service is great and all the menu items are tasty. I must say though, that the cous-cous mixture for the lamb was salty...I couldn't finish it. The lamb was delicious though. The duck is excellent...but the spinach that comes with it is salty. If they cut down on the salt for those things, I would be able to taste the food.
Otherwise, the food is really great. The duck dish is my favorite so far.

I'm a member of a Philly Women's Dinner Club and this is one of the BEST places we have been to.
Although the place is small the food was FANTASTIC. Our group often tries Mediterranean restaurants that have all been so-so. I am so shocked to read reviews for Figs that say the food was bad...I can only
assume that those people only like bland Italian restaurants (this city has far too many of those.)
If you enjoy trying something a little different and you like very flavorful food, go to Figs!!!!

I agree with the review "rude rude rude". The same thing happened to my partner and I, though we had called ahead. We went there to celebrate our anniversary and as far as the food goes, it was good. The service though was unexcusable. When my partner and I toasted and tried each other's food, I looked over at the kitchen (which can be viewed from all tables) and saw the kitchen staff mocking us. When I addressed this to the waitress, she just shrugged. To top it off, once we left, the kitchen staff (3 men) were standing outside smirking at us. I wish I was making this up. I have never been treated like that before.

We walked in ad said "Hi, could we have a table for 2, please?"
That was answered with a "Without a reservation?? Pffftt...I'll see" (There were ony 4 people in the place!!!)
The waitress was rude and rolled her eyes as I was tring to order. (I was pretty quick)
My girlfrind leaned over 1/2 way through the meal and said "You know, I definately don't feel welcome here"
Nobody ever bothered to check to see if the food was ok or if we needed anything. Not once.
The staff just hung out at the top of the restaurant and pointed at customers and giggled.

The food wasn't bad, though. I enjoyed that.

Just got home from our dining experience & felt I should compliment right away. Customer Service was excellent for our party of "8". Our server made sure after reciting the specials at one end of the table, the other end was sure to have heard them. Our food was served promptly and our wine was attended to efficiently. Evverybody in our party thoroughly enjoyed their meals and desserst. Recommedations were made to us in ordering pir main courses and our desserts. I will definitely return with my husband and our friends as this was an enjoyable experience. 2/17/2007

I've read some rants and it appears that some people have been less than happy with the service - the person offended for being asked to take his foot off of the chair, for example. C'mon, buddy, people sit on those chairs! I've always had decent, respectible service, the food has been consistently delicious and the table is ready when you ask for it.

This place isnt trendy, so don't expect chic. You should expect that your appetizer and entree will be delicious. They could improve their desserts, but the coffee is excellent.

This is a fantastic place with excellent food. I've been in Philly about a year now and eaten at many of the "great" places around town and this is definitely a great spot. No one was pretentious, the service was great, food hot and flavorful, etc. etc. It's a great neighborhood BYOB and I hope it stays that way. When it becomes a "destination" it loses the charm. Be sure to get in on this place before others do...its definitely a find in Philly.

I first heard about figs on restaurant. com, and even using one of their $10 gift certificates, the mediocre food still wasn't worth the money I spent. It's a small hole in the wall place that charges a lot by trying to be pretentious and better than it is. Poor ingredients too. I'd recommend this place only if you've run out of other places to eat.

Figs is a favorite in the Fairmount neighborhood. It has a very family, quirky feel to it, so if you walk in expecting an overproduced, snobby atmosphere that seems to equate BYOB these days, you will be disappointed. The food is wonderful -- the lamb and salmon are recommended. On my last visit we wanted to share a salad. It was split on two plates for us, no need to ask. The service staff are not Le Bec Fin trained, but every encounter was done with a smile. This is a great place to RELAX and enjoy the meal. Those who wish to see and be seen should go elsewhere (please.)

A great find in the art museum area that was cozy but not so close that I would consider it elbow to elbow. Service in the beginning of the evening wasnt great but as the evening moved on our waitress was Johnny on the spot.
The food was nothing short of excellent. Started with clams that were nicely sized and very flavorful. For entrees lamb, fillet melon, and duck were all cooked as ordered and came out piping hot. The spinach with garlic came out a little too salty but other than that one detail the dishes were delicious.
Desserts are plated nicely but nothing extraordinary about them.

Have visited Figs several times in the past, and have had decent experiences, until recently. My dinner mate had a fall on a recent trip, and sprained his ankle. There were 3 of us for dinner so he rested his sore ankle on the extra chair at the table. We ordered our food, ate every bite, and then the owner came over and insisted that he remove his foot from the chair, stating that it is rude in his culture to do so. My dinner mate stated why his foot was on the chair, and also stated that he knew about the custom, and said that we are in America, and that he would not be doing such a thing if his foot was not hurt. This lead to a major yelling match between the 2 men. We ended up being asked to leave the place. Watch out for him.....

Figs was highly recommended by a trusted friend. This place is and off the beaten path, a bit homespun and eccentric but a very worthy gormet experience. In otherwords it's one of those rare good "finds" like discovering a very good family run restaurant while abroad.
The food is what its all about here and my date and I marveled at the freshness proper cooking of the fish, the complex and delicious flavotings and variety of ingredience that goes into every dish.
The service was friendly if not entirely professional as was the decore but that is the normal for this type of place and in can be though of as part of its charm. All in all it was a fantastic dining adventure that I would gladly repeat to try other things on the menu.

Since changing Head Chefs in mid-July this place has done nothing but get better. The food was delicious and really unexpected. I really dislike garlic mashed potatoes, but they tasted wonderful with the evening special of salmon. The only thing I found they could improve on was whomever takes reservations, she was a little on the ditzy side. I'm so happy I made reservations at this restaurant, I'm definetly going to go again.

Here's my original review: "Figs is simply the best B.Y.O.B. in Philly. Even better, it's not overpriced, nor is it difficult to get a table. (Django's should take note.) I can't recommend it highly enough, especially for summertime dining, when its sidewalk tables are ideal. Be sure to get the fig-flavored ice cream for dessert; it's delectable."

Unfortunately, Figs has slipped considerably. My last time there, I ordered a steak medium rare, and received it medium well. When I complained, the chef sent out a replacement that wasn't even rare--it was raw. Moreover, he was pissy about it: for the rest of our meal, he glared at me from the kitchen (which is in full view of the dining room). Our other food was cooked properly, though not especially well. It's a shame, because Figs used to be extraordinary, and now it's merely mediocre. I don't plan on returning.

Don't get me wrong, this is a great little joint, but to date, I have gone to Figs three times and have yet to have the veggie quasadellas....they are ALWAYS out of it, along with the next two things I pick off the menu. Usually, my 4th choice is what I finally get. So don't go with your heart set on one particular menu item.

I go to this neighborhood restaurant often, and am always pleased with the quality and price of the food. Sometimes service can be a bit spotty, mainly because there aren't enough servers to go around. However, it's never bad enough to stop me from returning. Harissa marinated octupus app is delicious.

I went to Figs with my husband and a friend, choosing it based on the reviews here, and wanting to try something new. I have already recommended it to others. The food was good - not too heavy, but not sparse either. The service was wonderful - Mustaffa himself waited on us and was friendly. We tried the Fig ice cream and were not disappointed. I would go again, without a doubt! Better for small parties, as its a very small dining room.

Pros: great atmosphere, tasty dishes, prompt service

.

The North African inspired Mediterranean food at Figs was unique and generally terrific. The flavors in all the dishes we ordered were fresh and vibrant. I had a fabulous squid and octopus salad for starters-very tender. Such was also the case with my rack of lamb entree-again tender and flavorful without the gamy quality that sometimes steers me away from lamb. Everyone in my party thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The service was friendly and attentive. (The server cheerfully and patiently put up with my father's seemingly endless barrage of sometimes purposefully silly questions.) My only complaint is that the atmosphere would improve 100% with some dimmer lighting.

Pros: terrific food, reasonably priced

Cons: no parking, too bright

Everything ranged from quite good to excellent. We sat outside on the funky sidewalk -- laid back, unpretentious and fun

A charming spot near the Philadelphia Museum of Art celebrates the cuisine of North Africa, in the capable hands of Mustapha Rouissiya---a native of Morocco. Figs has evolved to feature Moroccan-influenced Mediterranean specialties…
