This pizza is the best. Hands down. I live for food and there is nothing that even comes close to this pizza.\r

I spent $45.50 on 3 pizza and was never more disappointed. This was my first trip in more then 3 years. It took me over 1 1/2 hours. All 3 were burnt. I like a thin pie but over cooking does not leave much to eat. The white spinach

The pizza was exceptional. I especially like it because they offer white pie. Unlike most places this white has flavor.

I, however, could so with out the wait staff. They are lazy, rude, and in general made me never want to go back to the place. This waitress was so bad that she was actually talking about us right in front of us. She took an hour to retrive my order and then got made when I asked where it was. Even though I called to reserve my pies hours in advance. It is because of the staff that I did not give 5 stars.

I'm not one to publish restaurant reviews, in fact this is my first. But I felt compelled, bordering on a sense of duty, to stand up for this joint. I have traveled that country border to border and coast to coast. I have lived in NY. This is without doubt the most sublime pizza offered on the planet. Bar none.
I read some of these other reviews and begin to lose my faith in humanity. All the complaints I read are "terrible service" "not enough parking" "had to drive" "reserving dough is a gimmick" "WAH!" If this is all your going to complain about, there a quite a few Steven Starr restaurants downtown where you can dine, complain until your blue in the face, and ultimately be unheard. This place was by an Italian immigrant at the turn of the century and has been owned by the family since. They have never tried, nor will they ever try to impress you in the 5-star crowd. I agree with Murray, give me my local waitress in the t-shirt and loafers! give me an hour wait for my pizza! To sum it up, if I'm one death row and my last meal is requested, Tacconelli's will be that meal.

Pros: THE best pizza in Philadelphia.

Cons: None for patient humans.

.

I laugh at the folks giving this joint bad reviews because of poor service due to not being fawned on by a busy waitstaff populated by folks from a tough neighborhood who really don't want to hear about it. To me it all adds to the charm. Who doesn't like gettin called 'Hon' by a surly woman with a bazooka bra and comfy shoes from Payless? Are you kidding me? Offer courtesy and you'll do fine. Quite frankly I'd take a kick to the kids to ensure I had a shot at getting what I feel is simply the best pizza I've ever had - the white pizza. It defies description. Just reserve your friggin' dough, go there with patience and beer, and order the white pizza and then whatever else you can think to eat. Don't forget to reserve too much dough. Yes, you're going to wait. I defy anyone to have leftovers sitting in their fridge after, eh I don't know, 24 hours we'll say.

Pros: Kick in the Groin Worthy Pizza

Cons: Spoiled HIpsters With an 'I'm Special' Complex

Never seen a place. To blend in with locals BYO beer/wine/salad/cake - all they make is pizza. And it is very good.

Drove in excited to taste the pizza that is supposed to highly rated. The waitress was rude and gave horrible service. If they don't know you as a regular they totally give you bad service and basically ignore you during your whole meal. The waitress had a rude attitude, she took our order and then never came back to check on us or offer us refills. She would talk to other customers who were regulars minutes at a time while we waited for service. Getting a box and our check was like asking for a million dollars. The pizza is overrated and we ordered two with each one cooked differently. I would never go back and would recommend that you don't waste your time if your thinking about going there.

At the risk of sounding indignant- this is such a pretentious, overrated place. You have to order your ??dough? well in advance, and let??s say you would like to modify one of their menu pies (e.g., can you please put pepperoni on that?), they tell you ??no,? that??s not possible! What, the master chef cannot conceive a slight alteration, or the customers (sheep in this case), couldn??t possibly know what they really like?!? There are better pizza places within three blocks that will give you what you like. --OK, I admit, it is a little indignant.

Walk in the door of this restaurant and the wonderful aroma hits you. This restaurant does everything well and it's not just pizza. Be aware, it is a little quirky -- cash only and crazy hours.

Brick oven pizza, made to order. The pies are so delicious this place is usually really crowded. You can get any topping, and the sauces are great either white or red.

We used to go to the Philly location, but the last time we went here.It is just as delicious. Their white pie with spinach & tomato is theCadillac of pies (that's how it's been described & I agree). The peppers they give you are to die for- make sure you sprinkle thejuice right on your pie.

We had heard from many people that this place has the best pizza. Once we tried it we were hooked. It's a thin crust pizza. Very tasty. We hear the Tacconelli's in Philly requires you to order your dough in advance, because they are so busy and popular. We haven't experienced that here, but if we had to do that, we would. Its well worth it. We like the fact that this place is byob.

I recently came to this restaurant for a birthday get together. What great pizza! The best pizza I have had in a LONG time. I highly recommend this place. One bit of advice - CALL BEFORE TO RESERVE YOUR DOUGH! The reservations were made a couple people short of our actual amount, and some people had to sit in the waiting area to eat. there was no extra room. We still had a wonderful time, and i will only eat pizza from here!

i was very excited to go to this pizza place although im not a pizza fan - but with all the good reviews and the stories i felt like i had to..
unfortunately i never got to try their pizza. after an hour and a half of us waiting and seeing other tables they arrived after us being served, i decided that the gimmick of the place is not for me. RSRV your pie, get crappy service and for what - pizza? not worth it.

Tacconellis is very good pizza, BUT, and this is a big BUT, the pizza is not consistant, i have gone there at least 20 times the past few years and i can say i WILL Never return. the people who work there are flat out rude and arrogant, and sometimes my pizza is crispy, and sometimes its floppy either because they are so busy, or your pizza sits because the wattresses sit down and talk to eachother. last year i went on a mission to find the best pizza in the area, not just the city and this place clearly is not the best.

Although i love the pep and black olives, there is much better alternatives, i would rather take a 30 minute drive and get AMAZING PIZZA and be treated with respect from a place like delorenzos in trenton.

Also the sauce at tacconellis has been very acidic the past year, and not enjoyable, The pizza taste good, but that is usally after sitting for an hour waiting and having to deal with the rude staff

as a local you constantly have to deal with people from NYC and the suburbs as well, although i dont mind suburbans they seem to sit and chat all night, which doesnt help in a small place. Plus having to find your name on a list for dough gets annoying because usually your name is spelled wrong and your made to feel stupid, or at least i was.

If you dont want to drive far, go to tonys place in the northeast or vinces....they are both decent, but no pizza really has a bite like delorenzos in trenton....

Thats just my opinion though, but i dont see how tacconellis kept winning best of city when its clearly not.

My husband and I have been going to Tacconelli's for 6 years. Our third date together he took me there and family was joking around because of the reserve the dough policy. Jokes on them now, when my father saw Tacconelli's on the Food Network, he begged us to make the reservations that he needed to check it out. History has been made every since! My little sister and her husband are going with us tonight for their first time. Like my dad they are skeptical too of the reserve the dough this better be the best attitude. We will continue to come here even though we commute an hour to get there and sometimes have to wait but it is always worth it!

Tacconelli's is the only pizza restaurant I've ever heard of where you have to reserve your dough well in advance. But it's terrific and so you play by the rules and reserve. Beware if you don't like garlic. It's positively loaded with it but they'll meet any requests to cut down. They also add quite a bit of extra olive oil after the pie is baked, but you can request this not be done. BYO (We've actually brought our own glasses too as all they had were plastic pepsi cups.). Parking isn't easy since you must find a spot on the street.

It was a good pizza but not worth a drive from South Jesey. The "reserve your dough" policy is a gimmick to make you believe you can't live without tomato sauce on cooked dough. Ridiculous nonsense. Estimating dough needs at a successful pizza shop is not astro physics.

Tacconelli's Pizza is an experience that should be had by all. Thin crust that is baked to perfection in the original oven of years ago is the perfect base to these pies. The pizza with cheese is tomato sauce with just enough cheese to lightly cover. The flavor of the sauce isn't hidden by anything and compliments the crust and it is "incredible" . The pizza with cheese and sausage was another combination that we couldn't keep on the pan long enough to cool off. Our last Masterpiece was the Cheese with pepperoni and the kids were done with that in minutes. The sauce here is the greatest and should be bottled for resale, athough recreating the crust would be impossible. We had 3 adults and 4 boys 8 -10 and we ate 4 pies no problem, next time we will get 5. Call in and order your dogh now!!

It was quite a hassle to get, given that you'll sometimes call and get a message saying that they are sold out. However, it was worth it. When judged objectively against other pizza places in the Philadelphia area, this one is the best.

I've been going to TACH'S for a year now.....it is the BEST. I've never been a thin crust person until now. The flavor of the sauce, cheese and great crust is addictive. I know many love the spinach and tomato (which is very good) but I love the Sausage...my mouth is watering just writing about it. It is the best.

This truly is the best pizza ever! I cannot believe in the 36+ years that I have lived in Philly, I did not try Tacconelli's sooner. I have reserved dough and picked up the pizza, on many occasions, before my shifts at the hospital, and we all love the pizza. Our favorites are the spinach pie and regular pie (only because we have not tried the others yet). I plan on trying the eat-in experience with my family. When we do, I am sure I will still love Tacconelli's. The staff has always been courteous during my take out trips. Thank you Tacconelli's for your wonderful pizza pies!!!!!

Sauce, Cheese toppings are the best.
Try the white pizza, gooood.

Just to clarify a lot of the contradictions on this blog: Dough reservations are necessary because they spend all day making FRESH dough from QUALITY ingredients (anyone who's had it knows its nothing like any other dough in the city!). It may be cooked a little unevenly but thats what makes a true brick-oven pie (. the temperature is uneven in the oven). Also, the only way to find the service rude is if you, yourself, are a snotty, stuck-up person who doesnt appreciate the Port Richmond culture (we're down-to-earth, blue-collar people who don't put on a front: what you see is what is REAL). As for the long wait: A night at Tacco's is an event. You are there to socialize and enjoy a meal with NO RUSH: the way it is in ITALY!!! Its BYOB so catch a buzz n savor the evening. As for those who don't like the pizza: go to dominos or Pizza Hut n get the slop that most Americans are USED TO.(when you're used to slop, slop is your standard) Other notable favorite: Charlie's on the Blvd.

Best pizza I've ever had anywhere. My favorite is their white pie with tomatoes and sometimes sausage (be careful if you're prone to heartburn). Can't go wrong with traditional red, either. I'm not big into to toppings so I like it plain. Goes great with a beer or a bottle of wine so bring your own! Just be sure to call early enough on the weekends to make a reservation, especially on Fridays during Lent.

tacconellies is by far the best pizza around philadelphia. i can probably eat 3 pies myself. i grew up in port richmond and know this for a fact. everyone out there this honestly is the best pizza around and right now at 930 in the morning i am dieing to get one tonite. all of those people out there the wait is only due to the baker baking them one at a time for the best quality they can offer. would you rather have them rush or have them make it the way YOU want it. so cut them some slack they are good people and the wait is deffinately worth every minute and every penny

I agree with rosiebear's review- the service is terrible- both rude and slow- and everything about the place indeed screams "you need us more than we need you." It takes forever, and not only are they unapologetic about this, but in my case, I was blamed for the wait because I had the gall to ask for a menu! (Keep in mind that I would gladly have ordered during the 35 minute wait to sit down that I had to endure despite my dough "reservation") Are they kidding me? Another review was correct also- all they are making is pizza and soda- what in God's name takes so long? Save yourself the time and b.s. that goes along with this place. 5 Other, Better Pizza Places in Philadelphia: Alex's (Manayunk), Couch Tomato (also Manayunk), Santucci's (all locations), Joe's (16th and walnut), Geno's (Frankford Ave.- mayfair). None of them require anything as stupid as "dough reservations" and none will blame you for their own incompetence.

Pros: Not many

Cons: Crowded, noisy, laughably bad service

Best Pizza EVER!!!!

Tac's pizza is simply amazing. The red sauce is incredible. I have been a customer for 20 years. It's a one man one; one over operaton and anyone that knows anything knows that anything that is worthwhile is worth waiting for and i will gladly wait as long it takes to indulge in a delicous tacconell's pie. The service was inpecable and their grandson named thomas was very helpful and extremely good lookng. We mss Barb and Vince!!!

I live right in the neighborhood, I do go there.....that being said I don't know if I would come from new jersey like many people do just to go to taconelli's. I hear the one in Philly is better than the one in Moorestown. The waitiresses are slow and rude...they could be friendlier...if you don't like your job, leave it. You would think they were actually preparing the pizza themselves.....they only serve pizza and soda....what takes them so long? they make you wait after you have made reservations....cram you into these little areas and then make you wait for your pizza and soda refill.....sometimes the pizza is so thin and overloaded..it falls apart before it makes it into your mouth....as time goes by I find myself going there less and less. New place down the street is Hinge Cafe -another alternative and it's great food.

Pros: good pizza

Cons: awful, miserable, rude waitresses, and long wait

.

The pizza is one of the best around, but, it's over- priced and the waitresses seem to take the customers for granted. They don't appear too concerned about return customers. Expect a ridiculously long wait , and don't drink your first soda too fast - you may not get another. After being a loyal customer for ten years, I became tired of their "you need us more than we need you" attitude. I will not be returning.

Pros: bring your own booze

Cons: over-priced, long wait, heat too high in winter, poor service

Though I was dubious about the reserving your dough (shouldn't a business be able to accurately estimate its dough needs?), but viewed it as a reservation for a table. When I arrived, 5 minutes before my 8pm reservation, I was told it would be a few minutes. It was a half an hour. We sat at the table for almost ten minutes before any waitress approached us, and then asked us if we needed menus. After we ordered, it was over NINETY MINUTES before our first pie came, during which time no employee approached our table for any reason. When we asked about this, and pointed out that a group of people we knew, who sat down at the same time as us, had already recieved four pies, and that a take-out order of six pies had been completed, the waittress told us that we had done it wrong- that we should have ordered before we sat down, like they did." So no only do you need to reserve dough, you also need to order before you sit down, although no one will offer this information to you. The waittress refused to offer any apology, and actually complained that we were "being mean." All four at our tabel are or were waiters/waitresses- we are all very sympathetic to their role, but this service was absurd. A cook then came out and apologizedthat we had to wait, but then told us it was "our fault" for coming on a friday. I can not explain what Tacconelli's reservation system is aimed at doing, other than perpetuating some myth that their pizza is SOO good that you must reserve dough. What I can tell you is that the employees are rude, obnoxious, and arrogantly act as though they are doing you a favor by allowing you to spend money there. Never again. Alex's in Manayunk is almost exactly the same style and quality, and Gino's (Frankford Ave.) and Santucci's are different styles but as good or better. Paradise Pizza in Norristown, and DeLorenzo's (I think) in Trenton are just as good, and you can get there and back in the time you'll wait at Tacconelli's. Don't believe the hype.

Pros: Pizza is pretty good, but...

Cons: Its not worth the wait or the rudeness

I was happy to see the past two reviews- I recently tried this place with my oyfriend and parents and thought it was a joke. Any redeeming qualities in the pizza itself were outweighed by the awfu service and ridicuolous wait. Also, be forewarned that this place is a BYOB in the way the Pizza Hut is a BYOB- there'll be a bunch of kids and you'll drink out of plastic cups. Caliabrisella's (sorry for bad spelling) in Andalusia is much better. The extra ten minutes you'll spend on I-95 will save you [a lot of ] time and money ($14 and up for mediocre pizza? What?) I've lived near this place my entire life, and this is the first (and last) time Ive gone.

Pros: Um, is medocre pizza a "pro"?

Cons: Everything else

.

I agree with a lot of the other posts- the pizza is okay, but nothing special. The srvice is bad and that atmoshpere isn't very good either. I eat pizza between 5 and ten times a week and am willing to travel for a good pie. I am not willing to wait an well over an hour for carnival pizza and be spoken to like a d-bag. Skip it, and head elsewhere.

this place is overrated their pizza is not any better than any other decent pizza place just beause they cook it in a brick people believe it's better I went there because people talked it up I purchased 2 pizzas ordered it a a day ahead and still had to wait 35 minutes (I went to the bar across the street and had a drink while I waited) and then when I got home 1 of the pizza was completely burnt on then bottom I've had brick oven pizza plenty of times before and none were as burnt black as this one

I really, really like this pizza. Deliciously thin, crispy crust. Not too much cheese. I think the margerita pie is the standout item on the menu. In my experience the toppings (although good) tend to sog the crust.

However, I think 17 dollars for a margerita pizza is waaay too much. Not even Lombardi's on Rittenhouse Square (equally good pizza and perhaps better known) was this much.

Moved to Philadelphia recently from NY and have had nothing but appalling pizza all over town. Tacconelli's was my last hope, but after reading all of the negative feedback on this site I was worried. We ordered three pies, a white with spinach, a red with mushrooms and basil, and a red with onion, pepperoni and sausage. All three were absolutely delicious. No on is required to agree with me, but I'll just say that I lived for ten years in New Haven and ten years in New York and have been to most of the great pizza places in those two famous pizza cities, and I believe that Tacconelli's really stands up. And as to that reviewer who said he spent $100 on three pies - I have NO idea what he ordered; our three pies cost $50 total.

I am not sure why all this hype but we dined there about 2 weeks ago and I have to honestly say it was bad. The place was nice but the food was disappointing. The reason i say that is because i guess i heard so much about it and it was great but it was ok

Those who are used to the junk that comes out of pizzerias like Lorenzo's and Santucci's know no better. Tacconelli's makes a real brick oven pizza the way it should be done. Thin crisp crust, with fresh ingredients, they really know how to create a perfect pie. There is truly nothing in the area that compares. The fact is that reviews on this topic will be very subjective. Everyone has there on tastes. What matters most is that this place is getting reviews, and message boards are created about it. I'm sure your corner pizzeria doesn't get this type of attention. You have to request your dough and make reservations a day in advance, this place is packed all the time. This obviously isn't your typical pizza. This type of fame doesn't come from doing something the wrong way. I still think it's the best!
