I was a little apprehensive about this vet because of some of the negative reviews, but my experience was totally fine. If need be, i would go back, and would recommend them to a friend. They gave me a same-day appointment, the visit was easy, and everyone i talked to on staff was completely nice. My cat has been leaving diarrhea with blood in it, which could be so many things, and I was worried there would be more lab fees involved than I can pay for. The visit itself was $50 off the top, not cheap, but not outrageous either. The vet decided there may be a simple reason for my cat's affliction, and even gave me some take-home medication for my never-wormed kitten in case she had introduced a parasite issue. The visit was quick and quite casual (not un-professional/casual...the vet just had a friendly-yet-matter-of-fact manner), and i felt totally secure that he had been thorough and was well-informed in deciding against exhaustive testing, as well as being considerate to my financial deficiencies. I suppose that some people would have found the vet a bit...too efficient...but I appreciated it, and perhaps he would have been more coddling if my cat or I had needed or wanted to be...more coddled! Plus he didn't make me feel like a bad cat-mom for not having regular check-ups or not being able to spend a ton of money on special medications and products...although i did buy some pricey flea stuff, i know it works well, and it seemed the flea-battle is probably a big part of my cat's problem. Yeah, the office is spare, and looks like it hasn't been remodeled since 1971 (like, before that doctor was out of diapers), but it's clean and they seemed to have everything that matters. Something else telling, was that people (and beasts) in the waiting room that were more regular patients had a warm rapport with the staff.

Great, friendly staff. My mother and I are local breeders and wont go to anyone else. They help us with anything we need. Spaying, air travel, etc. I will be bringing a kitten in this week. Great hours, yes, prices might be high but so are the others. I have gone here even when I was young with my pets. A recommended vet.

I've been taking my cat here for a couple years now. I used to go to the Rescue League during the walk-in times but the exam room there was so crowded, and sometimes even filthy. It's always quiet here when I go in during the walk-ins and the staff, though young and seemingly inexperienced, are efficient. The doctors I've had are always nice about answering my questions. I found my cat on my parents farm when he was a kitten-when I brought him in, he had ear mites, fleas, you name it. They checked him thoroughly, and it seemed like overnight all his problems were gone. The last time I went in I was overdue to bring him for a wellness visit, but I didn't feel judged, even when I was told that my cat could lose a little weight (he's a Maine Coon, so it's hard to tell). The fees are mid-range, but I find that most of the doctors and staff are very professional and really seem to love animals (the last doctor I dealt with used the words "kitty/kitties" instead of "cats" when answering my questions-that is one sensitive dude). Plus, every time I'm in there for walk-ins, there are rescue cats being brought in droves, so I have to guess that they offer free or low-cost care for them.

Excellent, caring staff. Spay cat, checkup and immunizations for 3 dogs. They have walk in appointment times that mean your animal can receive care in a timely manner rather than scheduling weeks in advance. Reasonable care is provided.

I had to make 3 phone calls to get them to fax something for me. I finally got fed up the 4th time I called and hung the phone up on a very rude employee. I called back and they were extremely rude and hung up on me.
I have been going to Penn Animal Hospital for over 20 years, but I will never go back.
Dr. James Staud needs to take a look at the people he has in his office.

I wanted to let all know that Penn Animal Hospital is wonderful. I had to put my dog chrissy to sleep last year and it was very hard for me. Everyone in that place was wonderful. They were very compassionate and are always so helpful. I now have moved on and got a new Yorkie. I love them. They are always helpful and very friendly not only to their customers, but especially with my dog. They make the animal feel comfortable as well as the pet. They may be a little high at fees, but isn't your pet worth it? Think about it.

This was by far the absolute WORST animal place I have ever been too. The staff was extremely mean and unpleasant. We waited for hours to see the vet and when we did he was the creepiest thing alive. His nose was running and he barely spoke to us. He offered no information and mt cat actually got worms from the place. It was so dirty and disgusting. I cannot believe people actually have good things to say about it. I would never go back there no matter what.

A couple of years ago I took my very sick cat to Penn Animal Hospital. Unfortunately Romeo's cancer had spread and he needed to be let go. Needless to say, I was devastated. The hospital staff let me stay with Romeo as long as I need to say my good-byes. (Over an hour) The staff was so kind and compassionate to both my Romeo and myself. I knew that he was going on with dignity. No their office is not fancy, and yes, they write on note cards- but they have always been there for the animals that we call family.

Ratings_icons Always a great experience

Every time I have been to Penn Animal Hospital, everyone there is nothing but nice and willing to help. Dr Battle and the staff are always open to answering questions and explaining the details of any issues I have ever asked about pertaining to my pet's health. Compared to other animal clinics I have been to, they are really affordable without sacrificing the quality of care. If you just want the best for you animal without a lot of hassle and cost, this is a great place. Sure, they may not have a fancy lobby like some people are used to (see 1st post) and they may use index cards to keep records- gasp- but I'd rather focus on taking my pets where I know they will be well cared for by an experienced, compassionate staff. That seems a little more important than enjoying the aesthetics of the waiting room.

This is worst vet office I have ever seen or heard about. In addition to being poorly equipped, sloppy and ignorant, they are smug, arrogant and condescending. Their only interest seems to be pumping patients through as quickly as possible and getting paid.
I recently moved to Pittsburgh from another state and I am trying to find a vet for my dog. This place was very close to my home and at the time 2/3 of the on-line reviews were good so I decided to try them. I made an appointment and had my previous vet fax the dog's medical records to them. I got there and was surprised when the woman at the desk scribbled my info and the dog's info onto a card in a marginally legible hand. For over 15 years our vets have always used a computerized system that allows vets to share info with other vets' offices, emergency clinics etc. This place apparently uses an antique system of index cards. I told her that I had spoken to her on the phone an hour ago and that the dogs medical records should be there. When we went into the exam room for a well-dog visit I discovered that they don't have a dog scale. An assistant picked up my wriggling 100 pound animal, stepped onto a cheap bathroom scale, the vet guessed the weight, then the assistant stepped off, weighed himself, and the vet (Dr. Battle) rounded the numbers and did a quick calculation to estimate the dog's weight. The vet knew nothing of the dogs medical records and airly said "Oh they must be in a pile of paper somewhere" and tried to change the subject. After some prompting he went out, came back in without the dog's card. A few minutes later an assistant came in with the card on which were scrawled the most recent dates of two of the many different immunizations that I maintain on her. I wanted to talk to him about immunizations because my dog has a problem that is common to Weimaraners, that my old vet knew about and agreed was important, and that I have read about in on-line forums. The problem is that if the dog gets too many different vaccinations at the same time her immune system is temporarily weakened and she gets an infection. With Weimaraners it is good practice to split-up the vaccines and give them in 3 or 4 groups of shots a week or so apart to avoid this problem. When I finally made Dr. Battle go get the faxed medical records he clearly had no interest in looking at them. He was horrified that that the vet had sent her complete records and not just her most recent shot record. I realized that 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper would not fit into their index card file and I realized that the only place her records would be going was the wastebasket, save for the two dates that were written on the card. At my prompting, he went through the most recent vaccines, listened to what I had to say, and told me in a roundabout way that he thought this practice was ridiculous and he wouldn't give the dog the vaccinations that way. The worst part was his smug, arrogant, and condescending manner. In general everything there was done fast and sloppy, the place was not well equipped, and the offices didn't look clean to anywhere near the level that I am used to at vet's offices. In my experience, vets have some interest in what their patients owner's have to say. All this guy wanted to do was talk about how smart he is. I have had many animals throughout my life. I have intereacted with some really good dog and cat vets and with one of the leading avian vets in the country. I have never seen an operation like this one. I would never trust my pet to this clinic.

Ratings_icons THE BEST AROUND! Lucy loves them too!

Kerry K.

A couple of years ago, Lucy was struck by a car on Western Ave and the Humane Society up the street refused to help her and sent me, thankfully to these great folks! Dr Battle and his staff were calm and cool and handled every detail making sure Lucy would be just fine.. Now she has felt the need to try some rat poison and we make another visit to see the wizard Dr Battle and company again. As always, they were fast in fixing and did not break the bank! I cannot say enough about them and refer everyone I know to Lucy's Uncle Dr Battle, Uncle Brian and the nice girls behind the counter !You GOTTA try them if you are looking for a great vet!

I took my male cat there to be altered. He did catch something like kennel cough, since he had to spend the night. He was at death's door, when I took him back, but I was given antibiotics for him and in a day or so, he was just fine. I then took my Himalayan kitten there. Her eyes were running,, she was sneezing, she had ear mites, worms, and fleas. This is how she was when I bought her from the breeder. After a couple of visits, she was rid of all of these problems, and is fine now. The vets are caring and explain everything they are doing and why. I recommend these folks for anyone who loves their pets and want A+ care for them.

I've been going to these guys for 7 years now. Dogs and cats both (they wouldn't treat my children...sigh). I've had nothing but excellent service by the caring professionals here. Truly you could hardly do better for your loved pets than to entrust them to the care of Dr. Joe and Staff at Penn Animal Hospital.

I had my dogs ears cropped here and wasn't too happy with the service. They didn't turn out as good as I would have like them to. Their after care for the dog was very poor also. I had a second dogs ears done and took her to NORTH BOROS VETERINARY HOSPITAL. I would recommend taking your dog to here. Their care for the dog was excellent. She came home the same day and didn't have to spend the night. They healed up great and I couldn't be more happy.

Penn Animal Hospital is definitely a "first class" hospital. The doctors are friendly, caring and extremely competent. The staff members are friendly and will go the extra mile to answer questions or accomodate appointment times.
