Dont like going to new places so when the wife suggested trying LElizabeths in Providence I balked but she insisted so I caved and went. First time I was glad the wife nagged me. Hostess put me right at ease with her friendly smile

Although I have lived out of State for the past 3 years, E'lizabeths has always been my special place. I decided to pay a visit while visiting for the holiday. Still great service, excellent drinks, and the deserts are beyond description.

I went to L'Elizabeth's last Saturday night with a group of friends. We were meeting two friends who had already ordered drinks. The manager didn't seem to like the look of seven neatly dressed people, mostly middle-aged, coming into his restaurant. He immediately told us we had to sit down and get out of the way. Then he micro-managed where we could sit and informed us they "don't do separate checks," so we would have to order together. He asked one couple to move so he could have that table in case a couple came in - yet he didn't want us standing. It was rapidly becoming clear he didn't want us there at all.

At about the moment I sat down as instructed on a very uncomfortable, old, and ratty couch, he started yelling, forcibly took a drink out of my (very tiny) friend's hand, and told us all to leave. We stared at him, open-mouthed. He continued to yell. My brother went to the bar to get another friend who was still waiting for her drink and didn't know what was going on. The manager got in his face, yelling and threatening to "drop him" where he stood. My brother kept his composure and ignored the guy; we all left.

When we were on the sidewalk regrouping, the waitress and manager came out to yell some more and tell us not to stand in front of their restaurant. On a public street. We were so stunned by it all that we just left. Fortunately, the member of our group who is a career military man didn't hear them stomping all over our constitutional right to peaceably assemble.

One last word: the place was a mess and the manager was clearly tweaked on something. I would only recommend this as a place for a narcotics officer to make an easy bust

My girlfriend and I went to Elizabeth's on a recommendation from my mother. She said that when my father and her were dating this is where they would go. We could not believe how special this place is. The martinis were unbelievable! We had one piece of white chocolate cheesecake, the whole night was a winner!
I recommend this place to anyone looking to go out on a date or a place to sit and talk without being bothered.
I give it ten across the board!

If your looking for a place to chill with friends, or impress that special someone, Elizabeths is the perfect spot. Yummy homemade desserts (we had a slice of pumpkin cheesecake that was incredible) and a large variety of specialty martinis (try the Chocolate)made our evening complete. The waitress we had went out of her way to make sure we had a great time, and it was impressive and refreshing to see an owner with a hands on approach to his business. A place everyone should experience, LOVE IT!

Without question the worst restaurant in Providence.
No prices on the menu, ridiculous charges, and when one asks for an explanation the waitress yells profanities and calls US classless.

How this restaurant exists is beyond me.

btw - really not happy that citysearch made me give this disgusting establishment 1 star in order to complete this review.

By chance my husband and I popped into l' Elizabeth's one night after work - we loved it. The owners are super pleasant and the desserts are phenomenal. Ruth, who opened Elizabaths in the 70's makes all of the desserts daily and she always has a selection of fresh bar sandwiches that are prepared to your liking.

If you are looking to tuck yourself away with your significant other for a romantic moment, this is the place. and you certainly get what you pay for, the wine and martini glasses are large and filled - that is one thing that bothers me when dining. You order a drink and you receive the tiniest glass that isn't nearly filled - at Elizabeth's you get a full glass of wine. The same holds true for the desserts and sandwiches...and sometimes there are specials like tacos, prepared with the freshest ingredients!

My husband and I who are in the food business offering culinary tours in Italy popped into Elizabeth's on a cold Saturday afternoon. We are well travelers who spend half the year in Italy and who have wined in dined from Paris to Sicily and more. THIS PLACE IS A TERRIBLE UGLY RIP OFF---you do not pay $10 even in Monte Carlo for a cold expresso and Sambuca. DIRTY, DUSTY and DOWN RIGHT BAD BAD BAD is this place....don't be fooled by the alluring cafe table on the side walk nor candles in the window...OVER PRICED---2 cold coffees and 1 sabuca rang it at $20. THE CUPS WERE DISGUSTING, dirty and the place was a HUGE disappointment. Elizabeth should be shut down for highway robbery....I WAS BLOWN AWAY -DO NOT GO...I WARN YOU. Food lover who knows good food and willing to pay for it--when it is clean and worth it.

This was the worst restaurant experience I have ever had! Be warned if you go that you will spend 5 dollars for a single cup of lukewarm coffee that will not be refilled. We were visiting friends in Providence and wanted to go out for dessert. We tried going to another well known place that unfortunately was closed for vacation. We thought we would give it a try. Little did we know that we were about to be robbed! $12.50 for a single piece of mediocre cake??? Ridiculous. The bill ended up being $65 for 4 desserts and two coffees and two waters that weren't even tended to. They also don't take cards! Even in the most upscale restaurants, desserts aren't that much! And this place is a dump! We paid our bill but had to question the price to our waiter. He said that it was an "upscale dessert restaurant" and those were the prices. There wasn't even a kitchen! The desserts were taken from the front table that were sitting there for I don't know how long. We were the only table in there. We should've gone with our gut and left right when we sat down.

My husband and I went to L'Elizabeth for a martini and a dessert. It was nice, relaxing, and the waitress was pleasant.... UNTIL she asked us if we wanted another round. I contemplated it, but decided against it because it was already getting late. That's when she didn't like us anymore and visibally thought we were wasting out time. So my husband asked for the bill. $45!!! for 2 bad drinks and a SMALL slice of cheesecake. I was stunned. THEN when he went to give his card to pay for the bill, we were told they only accept cash! So not only is it overpriced, they are too cheap to pay the 3% fee for card transactions. There are many FAR BETTER places to go for drinks and dessert in providence.

Guys run away from this owner with half smiling face! And you better watch your wallet! FIRST: Allways ask for prices and think it twice before you take a seat. SECOND: Avoid any invitation, it is for sure that you are going to pay for all of them. THIRD: The ATM is there for a certain razon, nobody is ready for this kind of traps. And FOURTH: This place it is not romantic at all, I don't know who wrote those "5 stars reviews" but I am guessing now, too late!

This has been the most awful experience in years.
We had a four drinks and a slice of cake and the bill was around 100 dollars. On what planet a cup of tea costs ten dollars? I can't understand how this place is still open.
It is such a fraudulent business.

Cons: great pastry

.

the reviews have been written over several years, and I admit to going back twice (3 trips altogether). I am obviously a slow learner...since almost unanimously, they state the same thing - mediocre desserts, washed out coffee, and OUTRAGEOUS prices, with bad attitude and lack of service. Yet, they are still in business, so shame on us who go. I, for one, am finished.

Pros: If you heeded the warnings, and stayed away!

Cons: walking in the door...

No place else is Elizabeth's. Maybe that explains why some people just don't get it. Classy, quirky, and refined, it can be compared to a fine single malt scotch. To some it will taste god awful, but to those with a discerning palate, there is nothing finer.

I have always viewed Elizabeth's as a great place to go to enjoy a well made drink and real home made desserts in relaxing and comfortable setting. A recent visit it confirmed just that. Make no mistake - this is no place for bargain hunters, but true value is assessed in the overall experience, which for me has been nothing short of exceptional. I look forward to many more visits to this hidden gem.

My husband I were visiting from Florida and went to this place with two other couples. One of them said they liked this place, but they had only had a beer there. We ordered 5 desserts, 5 drinks and a hot chocolate. The bartender was nice enough, but he strangely kept making a big deal about our privacy and put us in a back room. We thought the atmosphere was nice and private with cute furniture. Even though there were only two other customers (who sat at the bar), we barely saw the bartender/server. We were in a hurry to catch a train so we asked for the bill. We were appalled when we saw a $200 total! The alcoholic drinks were about $20 each, hot chocolate was $8 (Starbucks is better) and the desserts were about $14. There were no prices on the menu, but we never imagined they'd charge so much. To make it worse, when we brought up our credit cards they said "We only accept cash. There's an ATM across the street". Fortunately, someone had the cash. Who carries that much cash around?! I looked for a sign out front to warn customers about this cash only policy and there were none. Do not go to this place the drinks and desserts were alright, but nowhere near worth $20!!! I think I'll contact the city of Providence to complain.

Pros: quaint atmosphere

Cons: cash only, insulting prices

This has been said in other reviews, but it bears repeating: this place is just incredibly over-priced. My friends and I almost had a heart attack when we saw that coffee and dessert for six was $200. To top it off, it wasn't until we went to pay that we were informed that they only take cash. Who carries that kind of cash on them anymore?

The real kicker is that none of the menu items are anything to write home about. The tiramisu is mediocre at best, and I thought so even before I looked at the bill. The pumpkin pie tastes like it's from a grocery store's bakery.

I could go on, but the point is I don't recommend this place at all.

Pros: Decent whiskey selection

Cons: Way, way, way overpriced, mediocre food and drinks

So I invited my mom and a good friend of mine out for a drink at what seems like a very unusual and relaxing place in providence. WRONG! we sat down, and before you could even place our drink order, i saw a little rodent at my mother's feet, knowing she is deathly afraid of rodents, i remained calm, i calmly told my mother to get up and move to another table, but i did complain to the waitress. NO PRICES on the menu, but since i have a lot of experience going out in providence and Boston, i assumed that it was probably expensive but not too unreasonable. After our drinks, we were asked if we minded the manager coming in with 2 dogs, "no" we said and continued to chat. about 10 minutes later, i smelled a very bad odor, i glanced to my left and saw RIGHT NEXT to me was A PILE OF DOG ****!!!!! we WERE NOT impressed. no apologies! but when we saw the check..........Oh MY GOD!!!! $6.00 for a NONALCOHOLIC coffee, $16.50 for a martini, and 12.50 for a small, not very good piece of cheesecake!!!!! ridiculous!!!, we walked out dumbfounded!!!! NEVER GOING BACK, and i suggest DON"T ATTEMPT THIS RIP OFF!!!!

So I went in with a friend and a former professor to catch up.

The place was empty, which was fine. What was not fine was the $14 tiny piece of pear tart we ordered to split. But it was okay. We decided that a it was a nice enough place so sit in and catch up, that we didn't terribly mind splitting a tiny piece of tart and paying $14 dollars from it.

But then, another waiter (owner?) came in. First he snatched away our menus (without prices on them) without asking if we wanted anything else. Then he told us (by shouting across the room) that we all had to order something else because there was a $4 per person minimum. I asked him how our $14 tart did not satisfy that $14 minimum, seeing as each of us would be paying at least $4. He said that's not the way it works at Elizabeths. Those aren't the rules. He got increasingly more hostile, despite our calm attempt to simply understand the "rules" but he abruptly came over to our table, snatched the remainders of our tart, cussed at us and told us to get out of his restaurant because he "didn't need us or our cheap f***** ways."

We left and tried to regain our composure and our evening.

DO NOT GO TO THIS SCAMMING, RUDE, UNREASONABLE RESTAURANT

We stopped in after dinner one night for drinks and were absolutely dumbfounded when presented with a bill for $35 for two less than mediocre martinis. The blueberry martini actually had blue food coloring in it with a few soft, almost muddled blueberries at the bottom. It tasted awful and we could not finish either drink. The atmosphere makes a feeble attempt at being a sophisticated lounge but only comes off pretentious and dated. The pastry case in the hallway to the restrooms has individual slices of cake already plated and covered in saran wrap..this doesn't scream freshness to me! I still have a hard time believing that they have the audacity to charge such absurd prices and still be in business. Avoid this place, there are too many other excellent restaurants and bars in Providence.

My husband and I visited L'Elizabeths on Saturday 8/23. We thought it would be a good idea as a final stop before heading home after a Waterfire. We couldn't have been more wrong!! I am convinced that the manager was under the influence after watching him leave the restaurant in his vehicle and return multiple times! He left his car running in the middle of the road each time while he ran in to the restaurant! We asked for our bill and he told us the credit card machine was down "Cash only" and wasn't able to give us a receipt totally our amount due. When we asked for a total he made one up on the spot! $52.00 for 2 coffee drinks, a glass of wine and a slice of pumpkin pie! We paid and left feeling completely ripped off!!!!!

My friends and I visited this past Saturday during a Waterfire night. What a mistake.

We were seated in a side room with some privacy and presented menus with no prices listed. We should have asked about the prices, but since we did expect to pay a bit of a premium for their desserts, we didn't bother.

Among the 8 of us, we ordered 4 teas, 3 coffee drinks, 1 soda, and 4 desserts. The chocolate pound cake was average, the torte was good, and the cheesecake was very good. The drinks were fine, except that they were out of milk for tea and we needed to ask them to bring sugar. The total for this average experience was $170. $14 for coffee drinks, $12 for desserts, and they added 20% tip automatically. Unreal. When we asked one of the hosts about the $6 soda, he left to check but didn't even have the nerve to return.

All in all, a horribly disappointing experience and one that we will never repeat. I cannot recommend enough that you avoid this place.

Perfect atmosphere for a romantic drink, or just a place to impress an old friend with. The drinks are expensive, but they are generous and worth their price. Fantastic! Intimate space with great service, quick and to the point. Very accomodating, they were willing to make any special drink I wanted, which is unusual. I had a lovely and original espresso martini that the bartender made up for me. I highly recommend this bar.

So i go there, with my date vistiting all the way from california seeking that i would be a really nice place. What come out is totally different, It just basically a room filled with old broken furniture and a cheesy name picked out. We were seated and was served by probably the owner or the manager a skinny white male who looks smelt funny and looked liked that he did not shower atleast a week. He served our medeocure drinks which tasted funny and the cake was not even worth finishing. It picks up momentum and all i see is panic and swear words and verbally abused being thrown at his other employess, or an employee. I requested for the check this was the break down my man had a martini which costed $14.50 my drink was 12.50 and the lousy cake 12.50. He was basically robbing people off. Lousy service. I have been in the Food Distribution for 10 years and never had such an experience. I HIGHLY WARN you to stay away from this Bar/ Lounge / cafe. Just awful.

Pros: Nothing to mention

Cons: everythng about that place

I would never return to this place. We ordered two coffee drinks and a dessert. We were charged $40. We're still puzzled over how the total came to this amount. We paid it, but in retrospect we should have just left. The drinks were nothing special, and the dessert mediocre. I would only go back here to dine and ditch, or maybe to take a leak on the furniture.
