Hinoki has some of the best sushi I've ever had. They have a wide variety of items in the menu including some amazing Japanese soda, a Japanese version of Sprite. The soup and salad I had were great and the rest of the food was amazing. They even have tepanyaki! Overall one of the best restaurants I've been in in a while.

Unlike a lot of people here in Insider Pages, who give 5-star ratings to their local McDonalds and Burger King, I reserve 5-stars for restaurants that would stand up to the scrutiny of a well-travelled person. Hinoki (and its sister restaurant, Kurama) is at the top of that list.

I arrived early for a convention on Hilton Head Island and went looking for sushi. The concierge recommended Hinoki, so I checked it out. They had all the basics plus some special items on the menu that were outstanding. I ordered one of the sashimi salads to go with my meal and was blown away by how good it was.

The next day my business associate arrived and I told him he had to check out Hinoki. We went there for dinner and I tried one of the other sashimi salads. We ate sushi til we could eat no more.

The next day our convention offered a fantastic lunch buffet. We skipped it and went to Hinoki. We noticed a couple there who had been there the night before and struck up a conversation. Turns out they ate there several times a week.

I don't know if it was because the sushi chef recognized us the second time, but he would frequently just give us something that we hadn't ordered, either as an apetizer or just to try something new.

The end of the story is that we ate there five times in five days. The local couple was there four of those times. Our last night there they bought us one of their favorite deserts.

I've never had a sushi experience like Hinoki anywhere else in all my travels. The food was great, and the people were wonderful. I can't wait to go back.

PROS: great sushi, unique menu items
CONS: too far away for me to go every day
