.

My husband is born and raised south carolinian, so he insists on barbecue on a fairly regular basis. Neither of us had been to Maurice's (my husband usually favors smaller, family owned, non-chain places), so we decided to give it a go. Upon walking in, we were immediately uncomfortable. Confederate flags and other confederate knick knacks festooned the walls of the entire restaurant. We inquired about the 'buffet', which we found worked on a (very pricey) per plate fee. We finally decided to just try some straight up pulled pork and chicken. The food was not bad, although we spent most of our dining experience trying to figure out why there was a picture portrait of Ronald Reagan amongst all the confederacy regalia. Too pricey for the serving sizes, more 'sides' (watery, greasy rice and some sort of hash) than actual food, and the rolls tasted refrigerated. Maybe, like Lizard's Thicket, this is one of those places you acquire a taste for. We never went back to see. The food was decent enough we would consider carry out, but the price is a bit of a hindrance. My husband also prefers vinegar-based typically north carolinian bbq, of which there is little selection here. I did very much enjoy the mustard based bbq on the chicken, but not enough to re-enact the war of northern aggression.

Maurices is an excellent choice if you like mustard based barbecue. I personally recommended the roasted chicken. It is the best chicken in the south.
