Animal Medical West in my opinion is the best animal hospital in Charleston. After going to three different vets and my dog very sick-a customer recommended them to me. They immediately asked that we come in and they operated the next morning and saved our dogs life. Another time a vet wanted $1500.00 to operate on another of my dogs for leg issues-Animal Medical West give it time and she did not need an operation. Their staff is the best and I totally trust them.

I can't believe that this Todd fellow would malign Dr. Hentges character over a phone call not received. It had nothing to do with diagnosis or care for the pet but just a perception. That's just irresponsible. Dr. Hentges is a great vet. He's smart and extremely experienced. He also has a terrific veterinary assistant named Crystal. She is excellent and does not forget to follow up. She's better than gold.

I have been using Dr Hentges for many many years and he cares for the animals he donates his services for humane societies. He has treated many of my animals with compassion and professionalism. He and his staff are very knowledgeable. Dr Jackson is also great. Dr Ross is just phenomenal, she was instrumental in keeping my yorki healthy through his senior years and I cannot thank her enough. Dr Hentges stays very busy but his associates are just wonderful

My dog (Pembroke Welsh Corgi) was a patient of this clinic for at least 10 years. I brought him in for all his shots & anything else necessary reguluarly. Through the years many tests were run on him for different ailments or for whatever reason at the time. The one thing they harped on was he being overweight. They had me buying a brand of diet dog food from them for awhile, but it didn't help so I discontinued it.
Well one weekend he got very ill so I took him to the emergency vets office in North Charleston. One of the Vet Techs was walking my dog & I to a room were we would be seen shortly she said. She was looking at my dogs stomach & I said "Yea I know he's a bit overweight." She looked at me concerned & said, "No, that's not fat that fluid in his stomach from his kidneys."
The vet checked him out & told me he has chronic renal failure, that I should take him to my regular vets office Monday. I did & they told me there was no hope for my dog. The best thing to do was have him euthinized. Sadly I did & I'll never forget the look on my dogs face (sad questionable eyes staring at me pleading to come get him out of the cage he was in) when I left him at the vets office for the last time.
My point is all those years different vets saw him at this clinic & not one of them suspected he had kidney problems. Yet that vet tech at the N.Chas. clinic diagnosed it right away. Well maybe I could have saved my dog some ailments he had if one of these so called Vets at the Animal Medical West had diagnosed him earlier & started treatment then. I know he still would eventually die from chronic kidney failure, but maybe I could have had him a little longer & made his life the greatest till the end.
Needless to say I've changed vet clinics. I hope this never happens to another animal there. Please educate your Vets more.

I can't believe this Mary person thinks that I would be upset solely over an unreturned phone call. That assumption is just ridiculous. Again, read the facts about this on the South Carolina Department of Labor Licensing & Regulation website. I'm not the only one with complaints against this practice. My issue is with the lack of care, respect and dignity given to my animal because of the irresponsible individual to whom I entrusted his care.

Although some services are a little pricey it's all worth the great service and care that you receive from the doctors and staff. I absolutely love Animal Medical!

I absolutely love Animal Medical West I have met all of the staff there and they have wonderful doctors and technicians with an extremely friendly front desk staff. I have been with them for 5 years now and they've done everything to accommodate my little chihuahuas every need, right down to saving his life when he was attacked by a dog! I find it astonishing to read any negativity towards this practice..maybe it's not them, maybe it's you!

The front desk staff is rude and unhelpful which leaves a bad taste right off the bat when you walk in. The services seem pricey. We stayed with them 3 years before we decided enough was enough and switched to another vet.

I would not take my animals anywhere else except to Dr. Thomas Hentges. He is the main vet at Animal Medical West. He is not available every day but he is a phenomenal doctor and he has an excellent staff helping him. I don't know about the other vets in the practice. All I know is Dr. Hentges saved my dog's life when other vets in Charleston did not have a clue as to what was wrong with her. Also, he does not do unnecessary tests or procedures running up your bill.

I absolutely love this vet clinic. They always treat me with respect and treat my animlas as their own. I have been going to this clinic for about 3 years and have never had a problem.

On a reccommendation from a friend, we began taking our puppy to Animal Medical West shortly after we got her. They were usually okay but when she contracted tape worm from digesting a flea, they treated me like a child. The female doctor came in and lectured me on my care for my dog and made it seem like it was my fault as the owner and that I was not properly caring for her. I continued to go to this vet but I insisted with the reception staff that I did not want to make any more appointments with this woman. About a year and a half later, my dog was stung by a bee. Her entire face and mouth swelled up, and she broke out in hives. When I called the vet to tell them about my emergency and to see if the could see me they told me they were too "booked " and could not see me that Friday afternoon, nor could they see me in the short time they were open the next morning. I called another vet and they stayed open for me while I rushed there through 45 minutes of traffic to get there. Needless to say, after that I changed my vet and I will never step foot into this clinic again.
