There might be unfriendlier people in Columbia, but I haven't found them. I've been to this place way too many times, and each time I'm treated rudely, not to mention ripped off.

The staff in the Gamecock traditions side is populated by young men who are either insanely stupid or insanely unhelpful, usually with a bit of condescension thrown in. They must be the children of the owners. If they aren't, then the owner is stupider than the whole bunch combined, hiring people like that.

The real problem with this place, though, are the prices. No, I don't think $60 is a reasonable price for a sweatshirt that says "Carolina" on it. Show me some hand-embroidered geometric design sewn in gold thread and then we'll start talking about $60.

The designer of the t-shirts is a moron, because Carolina often gets some sort of small achievement, only to fail at the following one. Example-winning SEC East, losing SEC championship. But they don't make shirts that say "SEC East Champions 2010," they say "SEC East Champs 2010, HEADING TO ATLANTA," where, of course, we lost. So I am not buying something that reminds me of how we always get so close and fail. Thanks, JW, for making shirts that I get so close to buying and then fail to because they have dumb mistakes like that.

If you want to spend this much money on Gamecock merchandise, just go to the bookstore. Any of the bookstores.

(And be wary of their gold buying practices--I'm sure they'll try to rip you off with that, too!)

Avoid!

I purchased my wife a very pretty amethyst ring there for Christmas last year. Six months later, in June, the stone fell out while she was just sitting on an airplane. When we took it back to the store to be fixed, it cost us almost half of what we paid for it to fix the broken prongs. I had the receipt, but they still would not cover the damages. They just don't stand behind the quality of the jewelry they sell.
