My husband and I visited St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church for the first time today 10/30/10. Fr Andy officated the 6pm mass. Aside from the fact that it was very difficult to hear him for a majority of the service, what we did sense was a friendly priest, who had a good rapport with many of his parishioners. There was not a lot of community spirit from within the congregation from what we saw, (re:limited sign of peace), but overall, we were not disappointed that we made the visit. 2 1/2 stars are actually more appropriate than 3 stars, but only whole star scoring is accepted on this site.

Pros: Beautiful, peaceful grounds, outdoor shrine, stained glass windows, antique furniture, friendly priest, some diversity among congregation, worship musicians/guitarist.

Cons: Poor sound system within church, very difficult to hear if you're not sitting up front, limited friendliness among parishioners to visitors, no greeters present, more diversity among church goers would be an improvement, missalettes do not have weekly scripture readings for parishioners to follow along with during mass, which is a big loss for those who wish to read and learn more about the Bible and scripture.

I had grown Catholic all my life, and I had never, ever experienced a priest with such hateful attitude when asked simple questions.I called St. Thomas church because they have St. Vincent De Paul Ministry who serve the less fortunate when in time of need. As a past member of that ministry in different church, I know the boundaries of services for the different Churches. First, I called the Saint Vincent De Paul #, but the box was full and I was asked to try another time. I work in a non profit organization, where we make contact to different places where we know these clients that come through our doors can go and ask for help. Today , I called Father Leonard and I was astonished for the rude answer I received from him. I had visited that parish in the past, but I was not prepared when I asked him if he had a Secretary, ignorant me! I did not know this. But to have a Priest telling me that It was non of my business, and how rude it was of me to ask this question. I have to say for him at least he did not deny our client if it comes to them for help, and I hope he does help. As for me, I can take it. Jesus was called many other names and even crucified for speaking the true. I can tell you I would be recommending this church, I don't believe I would.

Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church offers a caring and friendly atmosphere for worship. The congragation is diverse and always willing to help those in need. For Spanish speaking people, there is a service entirely in Spanish. They offer a large hall for weddings and other parties as well. The church is located conveniently in North Charleston. For families with children, they have an association with a Catholic school in Summerville for reduced tuition for parishoners. They offer a variety of convenient times for weekend worship.

PROS: large congregation
CONS: none
