My wife and I have been members since this location opened. The place is always clean and the equipment is always in great working order. If an issue comes up management is very prompt in resolution.

I am drawn to yoga and just recently decided to try it out here. I showed up to a class (that was not clearly described as a high level class). The instructor greeted me as if I didn't belong to start with and I should have took the hint. However instead of being rude I wish he was honest. The class and whole experience was humiliating. Instead of instruction I was blatantly ignored. I stuck it out for the full hour but left feeling like the exact opposite of what yoga is meant to be. Unity isn't that correct? I hope that the instructor will learn some empathy and realize that no matter where a person is in their life or physical ability, that they are still worth teaching.

I have enough drama in the rest of my life I don't need it in a gym! Recently ECO sold to new owners which very much effected all of us members. They switched their spin offerings so now all of my favorite instructors are gone. There is just an overwhelming negative feeling in the whole facility, seriously I just want to workout I don't need gym management drama. I will be canceling my membership as soon as I can.

Very poor customer service. Management is not at all helpful to resolve any issues. They do not return calls so you have to be persistant. It became obvious the customer doesnt really matter when you have a million dollar business.

I do not recommend this "fitness center".

This is a really sub par gym. First of all, Eco makes its money off VOLUME. It's a fitness factory where guys on steroids grunt and throw down weights they can't lift. It's grey and sterile and dirty! The so called yoga is absurd. The vents in the yoga room are COVERED with green mold. The sad thing is, no one cares if you complain that the vents have mold or that the treadmills and tvs are broken. It's a factory where monthly dues are cheap. Don't be deceived. Prices are cheap to bring in volume. If you care about quality and sanitation this is not the place for you.

I go to the Mt. Pleasant location. This "gym" is over-run with stay at home unemployed yuppie moms and kids. I work from home and have the flexibility to go and workout any time of day. All morning and afternoon, the place is hijacked by these obnoxious snobby women and their litter of children. There are more damn kids running around this place than there are adults working out! Why? This is more of a daycare center than it is a gym. These self-important broads who "want it all" are terrible parents. Dragging their kids to the gym and shoving them in the daycare room for hours at a time. And guess who has to subsidize the cost of taking care of dozens of kids at a time? The members like myself. Because the parents who pay $25/month per brat for daycare, are not footing the whole bill. Why don't you try catering to adults- since we are are the ones paying the monthly fees? Is there no place for adults anymore? Is there no place that is friendly to men anymore? Who the hell wants a family friendly gym? Go to one of the many "women-only" gyms in town. There are certainly enough of them. They need a "men-only" gym where no stuck up, holier than thou women or children are allowed.
As far as the staff, I have no problems with them or their service. A couple of the girls at the desk dress like whores, which isn't too professional.
Equipment is fine though.

Several friends like the childcare options and enjoy it there. However, we all concur that the customer service and general attitude of the staff is very poor. It is very frustrating as the way you are greeted and treated can make a big impact on how you feel about your workout. They seem to staff the frontdesk with poorly selected, badly trained individuals who have no concept of customer service. Always looking down at their screens, sending emails or updating facebook. Yet constantly running out of soap, towels and sweat towels are hard to come by. I am out of there when my membership expires......

Pros: Close to town

Cons: Customer service very poor, staff surly and aggressive

The free weights only go up to 100 lbs, the place has awful airflow...there is no fans in the main area, this gym caters more towards the cardio crowd then the weight lifters. I have yet to see them perform preventative maintenance on any of the machines. They wait until things break to give it any attention. There is only one decent water fountain because the other one is always broken. They dont enforce any of your standard gym rules, people dragging bags around the gym, people working out in flip flops. Sometimes all the exercise balls are missing because they are being used in a class or in the kids daycare area....not to mention how dirty they are or how they are not properly inflated. I have been there for a year and the cons are starting to outweigh the pros, so I will be looking for a new gym soon. Maybe if the staff cared about anything the place would be better.

we were having some money issues around christmas and eco let us freeze our payments and still use the club until the first of the year. It was a big help and was able to keep my sanity during a stressful time.

great instructors, lots of classes and the child care is very well run. best gym i've ever joined, very clean and prices re lower than other gyms in the area. I've been a member for over two years and take many of the classes. Me and my friends( all female) love spin and the yoga classes because they are challenging and fun. this gym goes out of there way to provide a great family environment. Love the boot camp classes with kara and nate. sprout cafe is super. I miss the towels but understand the issue. Charleston is lucky to have such a wonderful health club and i'll be a member as long as we are here.

I am NOT a gym person and was very intimidated to enter this huge place of unknowns... I was greeted with a smile and quickly transferred to a manager who I can not thank enough for her help. She not only toured me so that I was comfortable and able to pretend to know where I was going but she actually put me on some of the equipment and showed me how to get started. She was very knowledgeable and helped me feel totally at ease, she has been between downtown and Mt Pleasant locations since the business opened and her expertise shows! The classes are awesome (Beth is great) and I look forward to trying more. Thank you for helping me get healthy!

What a joke for a gym! I have been a member for two years and have disliked every moment. This gym is more of a soccer mom hangout, moms with kids in thier huge SUV come to do YOGA with the other unemployeed stay at home moms. The towels have been an ongoing issue with staff because they are being stolen! So the solution is to have members bring thier own towels, my solution is to sweat on the equipment and let the gym clean the machines. If you want a place to see all the cool guys and girls of Mt. Pleasant then EGO fitness is perfect. I only continue to use the gym because I know the owner and he does not charge me. Finally the hours are terrible! The week of Christmas they closed at 4pm! Not just the 24 or 25th but the entire week! If you wanna be cool but still a fat mess this is your gym!

These "4-star" reviews MUST written by employees or friends of employees of ECO - I've been a member at a number of gyms in a number of cities, and these folks are seriously the least helpful and least friendly. The equipment is fine, the classes are fine - but part of that monthly payment (and ECO is one of the most expensive around) is for customer service. I'm not a high maintenance customer, but on occasion when I do have a question, I don't expect employees to act bothered when I ask it, blurt out an answer as quickly as possible, and leave before I have a chance to ask any follow up questions. More than once I've - literally - received a grunt in response to saying hello to the person working at the front desk. To be fair - I have encountered one or two nice people, but they are certainly the minority and - as you might imagine - they are generally busy helping people while the rest of the unhelpful employees sit around watching the walls. Another pet peeve - there are rarely towels available when you come in - and you should have seen the unprofessional "reply to all" email string sent by MANAGEMENT explaining that towels were a "privilege" and not a "right." When management behaves unprofessionally, I don't think you can expect much more from employees Pick another gym....you won't be sorry.

i have been a member of eco for over 6 months now. from the time i joined to present day, the staff has been unfriendly and stand off-ish. when i initially called about joining, i was deferred to a manager (who was never there) several times and did not ever received a call back. i had to pursue them, rather than them me. as a current member, i am very dissatisfied with their treatment of the members. rarely do they acknoweledge you when you walk in/out the door and the staff/management quite frequently posts rude notices and sends negative emails to the eco members about various topics.

i'm not saying the experience is awful, but for what eco members pay, the staff should at least greet the members with a smile or "hello". i will probably not renew my membership when it expires. i would rather take my business to a place where it is appreciated.

You can please some of the people some of the time, but not all of them. There is no better place to work out in Charleston. True, the downtown location has limited space. True, the customer service has been inconsistent. What are we looking for here people? I thought that the purpose of a gym was to work out, and not to socialize, or feel all warm and fuzzy because some part-time college student remembered your name. If anything, I've seen rude behavior on the part of some of the customers who think that everything should revolve around them. Such as, forgetting their scanning card and just walking by without checking in, or mumbling their name as they whiz by late for class and then sighing and rolling their eyes when the person at the front desk asks them to repeat it. yes you have to pay for parking, but its charleston. where don't you have to pay for it? the gym does validate your parking and will pick up half the charge. thats pretty nice of them. the personal trainers there are the best. and there are way more than just one married couple (although they are the best). there is a list of them to call. look people, lets stop pointing out all of the negatives because we could be here forever for just about any place of business. listen to what your momma always said, if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all. the employees that work there are doing the best they can with what they have to work with. when i go to workout, its all about me. not the front desk, the parking situation, the other customers, the music, the tvs, the this and that. warm up, lift weights, take a class, sweat, and clean up after yourself. come back again tomorrow. i know i'm going on and on about this and thats because eco is a great place to get healthy. by spreading your negative opinions, you're perpetuating the negative energy in this world. I think we have enough of that already. bottom line...stop looking for excuses & focus on you.

I live in Mt. Pleasant and got a pass in mail that said I didn't have to pay until 08! So, I was so excited when I went in b/c it's the holidays so I need to save money, but I want to stay in shape now it's getting cold. The new facility was cool, but when I went to use my pass I found out you have to pay the first AND last month upfront with a start-up fee, which is way more than any other gym in Mt. P. Then, come to find out you have to pay extra to take classes...ALL CLASSES!!! After trying it out for a few days...it's just another one of those standard gyms...NOT WORTH IT!

I went in with a trial pass that I received in the maiI. I was greeted by a very friendly staff and was given a tour to introduce me to the gym before working out. It seems to be perfect fitness center for those who are interested in toning their bodies or just trying to fit a little bit of exercise into a busy schedule. It caters to all age groups.

I recently visited ECO on a trial pass, and I was very disappointed by my overall experience. I was excited to try a spinning class so I called ahead to reserve a bike. When I arrived for class, all bikes were taken and I was not allowed to participate. The new gym in Mt. Pleasant feels like a big warehouse - not a gym. There were kids everywhere with minimal staff to handle them all. The front desk staff barely acknowledged my presence. When I inquired about a membership, I was told that a manager was not available. The front desk staff did not give me a tour and I felt lost in the huge building. If you are looking for a friendly, welcoming gym, DO NOT GO TO ECO.

This place is great! They have new equipment frequently and the spinning program is unbelievable. The teachers are more like positive coaches who push you that extra little bit. They don?t have a sauna but the energy in this place really gets me going. It is such a fun place to workout and the staff is so helpful. The young manager who signed me up remembered my name and she greets me with a smile every time I come in. She was very helpful with my questions and membership possibilities. She even gave me batteries for my headset:)! What great customer service. Thank you for that. Also, they got me to expand my health horizons and take yoga! Love it, it is almost a sport to keep up and maintain that kind of balance. I can?t wait to see results of my improved flexibility. This place is not a gathering time for socialization but a place to get your sweat on. The whole staff is knowledgeable so they can help with everything from workouts to directions. Overall, I would highly recommend this place to everyone. Not to mention the location downtown is perfect. It is fun, friendly and an energetic environment.

I read many terrible reviews about this gym before I experienced the horror myself. First of all, only a manager can discuss the price of your membership, and the first 3 times I called or stopped in a manager wasn't there. They don't have any fees listed on their website either. I believe the membership fees are on a person to person basis. Second of all they wanted to charge me $90.00 a month. That is outrageous, and they don't even have a pool or a suana or other perks you'd expect from an expensive gym. They said if I lived here it would be half of that, but I'm only looking for a 3 month membership so that's it. Over all they were quite unfriendly and uncompromising. The manager acted like she didn't have the time or patience for my business. Do yourself a favor, and don't waste your time with Eco Fitness. They need to work on the customer service.

Cons: unfriendly, not willing to compromise, over-priced

.

If you don't live downtown forget it...you will pay for parking. The facility is clean and if you are looking for a no-frills place to work out, this is it. Their class schedule is very limited and they don't offer much of a variety of classes, but I guess none of the gyms in this area really do. Spin classes are o.k, but nothing exceptional. Their aerobics room doubles as a child-care facility so you might consider bringing antisceptic wipes to clean up the baby drool, etc. before you take class. Personal training there is also limited. When I asked the front desk about trainers they said the only trainers they had on staff were a married couple.

If you spend most of your time at the gym looking for things to criticize or worrying about whether or not there are enough old folks around, dont go to Eco Fitness. First of all, you won't get any excercise that way and secondly, I don't want to be around you. But if you want a great place to get a good workout in a clean environment with a lot of other energetic positive health enthusiasts, this is the spot. The hours are convienient, the equiptment is new and abundant and the staff have always been very friendly to me. I have been a member for about a year or so and I have never had any problems with any aspect of the facility.

If you have a lot of negative things to say about this place I have a feeling the only changes that need to be made are changes in your negative outlook and attitude. Just work out, have a good time and lighten up!

Pros: Great equipment, great classes, great staff

Cons: Bitter old people sometimes stray in for a critical review.

.

Pros:
Great location
Great spinning and instructors

Cons:
Rude Management.
It is a shame that the girls who own the place never smile, make rude passive aggressive comments to clientele, and never offer a how are things, have a good day.

That is the way of a business- through customer service. You can only strive on a great location for so long until you insult/offend every customer in the gym.

I not sure what gym these negitive reviews are going to but their critisisms don't match Eco Fitness and Blue Turtle Yoga. The place is always clean. Its freindly and they have great classes. Yes, their are students but I'm a working guy and when I go there are as many post college people as students. My 30 something wife digs the yoga and at less then $50 per month for a ton of yoga classes I dig it too.Overall great value. I hear they are opening in Mt.Pleasant and I've told all my friends over there to join.

With what seems like 75% of their membership coming from the college students, you'd think they could get a few business majors in to help run the joint??!

The place is sparten and most always clean, save for the the sweaty footprints on the mirrors in the yoga room. Most annoying is the prupetually broken scale in the women's locker room and the confusing locker rentals, though, not confusing to those who use the lockers, but to the staff who can't figure out who's in where.

Yoga instructers are young and somewhat new in their teaching. Some are calm and helpful, leading with respect, others just want to control the class and tell you when to breath. I will follow my own breath, thank you.

If they would tweak their busines model a bit, think outside the dorm, they could improve and grow. Grow up!

Pros: Downtown location, Secure, Frat House Friendly

Cons: Frat House Smirky, Slow to repair equipt, Inconsistant teachers

I would have to disagree with the above review. As a working professional, I find ECO has very convenient hours (5:30 am-10:00 pm). The best classes such as Spinning and Tae Bo are at 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm. For 2 years now I have greatly enjoyed the variety and friendly atmosphere at this club. Not to mention it is very reasonably priced for all that they have to offer.

I agree with the last review; Eco Fitness is an okay for college students, but otherwise forget. There are few early morning class times, not a whole lot of after work times and the facility is very small and crowded at times, especially if you need an area to stretch and do ab work. But I can deal with all that if I have no other option. What I can not deal with is the rudeness of the staff. They rarely portray professionalism when dealing with clientele, instead can be quite disrespectful. I have cancelled my membership and know many other that either have or plan to as well.

Yoga and Spinning Lovers of all ages will enjoy this gym. The hours are convenient for ALL people....5:30am - 10pm during the week and from 7am - 7pm on the weekends...where as other gyms in the area close by 5pm on the weekends.
As for classes...they are based conveniently around business professional's, AND student's, schedules as the majority of classes are prior to 9am (beginning as early as 6:30am) and after 5pm (going as late as 9pm). And for those of us that don't work a 9-5pm there are mid morning and lunchtime classes.
You have a personalized TV on each piece of cardio which you can watch a DVD, listen to a CD or your favorite show on cable. They give you headphones so you can control the volume.
My overall experience has been awesome.....great prices, no contracts, always greeted and their right downtown!!!

Pros: Location, Hours, Schedules & Variety

Yoga & spinning lovers who go to school downtown will enjoy this gym. If this profile doesn't fit you, this gym isn't for you. The hours cater to students, with VERY limited weekend & especially holiday hours (for Labor day, the gym was open only until 2pm Friday, Sat, & Sun before the holiday). Class schedules are tiny & mostly occur during daytime. If you work from 9-5, you're SOL. Bring your own headphones to exercise; the music is soft & slow. You'll get more pumped by watching car commercials on their TVs than by listening to their music (if you can hear it over the hum of machines - it's always very quiet). The staff is standoffish at best, rude at worst. Summer hours & class schedules are even worse than regular season, illustrating again that this gym is for student spinners. Too bad, it's a great location.
