The Stunning Gay Dolphin

by William O.

I have visited the Gay Dolphin with my family for over 40 years. It is as unique a building as one will see anywhere. Inside, it is visually stunning as well. I still enjoy going just to walk around inside. It is always nice and cool inside and I love going regardless of whether or not I buy anything.
Check out the authentic 1960s era postcards near the main entrance if you go. They are only 25 cents.
The shark tooth area is also interesting.
Should you find yourself at Myrtle Beach, please go. You will not be disappointed.

History behind the name

by Libby F.

The store is awesome and when I heard how they picked the name, was even more beautiful. I was told when I came here 12 years ago that the man and his wife that started the shop use to look out over the ocean and they saw dolphins jumping and they looked so happy....thus..."The Gay Dolphin".

Okay I admit it, I laughed the first time I heard the name too. I have to say thought that this store has about everything you could want in a souvenir shop.

tourist's favorite

by Bunny E. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,612

This place has been around forever and has everything the tourist would want in a memento. You haven't been a tourist until you've visited the Gay Dolphin.

Great gift shop

by Doug S. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 9,874

The Gay Dolphin is a great shop to visit. This shop is several stories of great little novelties. You can get any kind of souvenir imaginable. You can also get or sell shark's teeth if you just happen to have any that you have found. This shop sells not only souvenirs, but also jewelry and dried sea animals and other small do-dads.

Interesting Multi-level gift shop

by Dana T. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 897

This is a very interesting place to browse, and I have bought some stuff here... but it is way overpriced. It is on the "strip" in Myrtle Beach, so it is really a tourist trap. There is a really cool counter with tons of shark's teeth, some prehistoric. The upper level is all authentic (expensive) Native American stuff.

PROS: Variety, cool stuff that's different
CONS: EXPENSIVE

That's "Gay" as in "happy".....

by Barbara P. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 12,455

One of Myrtle Beach's oldest and most loved landmarks. No, it's not a tawdry strip club--it's the WORLD'S LARGEST GIFT SHOP (so says them).

Whether it's the largest or just the biggest, or somewhere in between, the Gay Dolphin is a hoot to visit.

Multi-levels of just as much touristy junk you could ever imagine. They even have a "special" section dedicated to dead sea animals that you can buy at your whim. That part smells kind of funny, to be honest, and the mounds of dead and dried sea-horses and star fish make me cry. You know they didn't die peacefully...even though I think they do because I'd go insane if I were aware of the reality.

Neat novelty section that has the pens where if you turn them upside-down the lady's bathing suit falls off. Fun for the whole family, especially dad.

Not as good as they used to be.

by Karen B. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 3,687

Every summer for most of my life, my family and I would always make a special trip tp the Gay Dolphin during our Myrtle Beach trip. When I was a child, it was a highlight. These days its in hopes that its better than the year before.

The items they now sell are so cheesy and cheaply made, but they charge too much for them. They sell tacky beachy figurines, poorly made t-shirts and beach towels.

There are enough of "junk" shops in the beach area. I wish the Gay Dolphin owners would remember the good ol' days and make it an enjoyable spoy again.

PROS: none anymore
CONS: cheap, tacky items

Very unique store! A Must see!

by Heather A. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 6,371

I love the Gay Dolphin! It's a tourist attraction in its own right!

Many floors of just pure kitsch. An entire wing is devoted to seashells and various dried sea creatures (like sea horses). There's alot of MB souvenirs here and they're really inexpensive. There's also a large selection of gag-gifts like whoopee cushions and exploding cigars.

This is a great place to let your kids go and just go insane. There's so much here. Do not be mislead and think this is your run-of-the-mill Gift Store. It is not. It must be seen to be believed.

unique place

by T E M. | insider Insider | Rank: 16,909

The Gay Dolphin is a Myrtle Beach institution. Make sure to visit and pick up a souvenier here. Check out the shark display in the rear of the store. They have a large selection of the usual and the unusual. Good prices and friendly staff.
