I dont recommend taking small ones on the pier, but for kids 8 and up it is a great place to go fishing if you dont have gear. they will rent out poles/bait and have fishing tournaments on occasion too.

PROS: great place to take the kids
CONS: not meant for small ones

The Folly Beach Fishing pier is one of the most unique piers I've ever seen. You pay $5 to park (carload) and that $5 will be deducted from your fee to fish (Unless you are local and pay for a pass). Fishing is very reasonable. You can rent the pole and buy your bait at the shop. The pier extends way out over the Atlantic and you can rent the pavilion for parties, etc. at night. This is a must activity for those who would love to see what fishing in the ocean is like and maybe don't have the budget for deep sea fishing. Fun for kids! Every once in a while they have a "free" day hosted by the Charleston County Parks. Fun for adults and kids. Parking is usually easy but on the weekends, you might have to park and walk if the lot fills up (quickly on weekends). Street parking is free but hard to come by close.

PROS: A fun way to fish over the ocean
CONS: You have to really watch small children
