There is not much to do when driving through this part of South Dakota....so stop where you can. The corn museum is a unique event that has a great history.

it is an original to be sure. it may not be the most beautiful or historic landmark in south dakota, but you can't say you've seen the state til you've seen this! It was built in 1892, and, though several different building have been constructed over the years, the one that stands today was built in 1921. This structure has been exteriorly AND interiorly (above the basketball arena inside) redecorated using dyed corn husks, grains and grasses all from south dakota nearly every year. It's fun to see - it won't really take that much time.

Interesting landmark, they re do the exterior every year in a different design made entirely out of corn...they have a display outside that shows how they do it, kind of a "colored corn by numbers" system. We stopped on a cross country trip this summer. I had visited 8 years ago, also traveling cross country, and I wanted to show my son this interesting building. They have photos inside showing past years designs. It is also a basketball court and a place for concerts as well! (and of course, the obligatory gift shop and snack bar) An interesting side note: The photo of the 1914 Corn Palace shows a swastika made of corn on the front...this was and old Indian "Good Luck" symbol before Hitler and the Nazis ruined it for everybody.....this photo has a caption explaining why it is there! All in all, an interesting stop to break up the monotony if you happen to be driving across South Dakota!

The Corn Palace was a major disappointment for our children on our vacation. THe front portion of the building was under some sort of construction and the interior was mainly a snack bar, a short tour and film and a huge auditorium filled with a massive gift store. I would avoid this area next time.

When you see this place from afar, it doesn't seem like it would be that impressive. That is, until you get up close and realize that every since piece of artwork, and in fact, the whole outside of the buidling, is made from CORN! Sure, some kids would probably prefer a place with rollercoasters and such, but this is a fun place to stop by and see if you get the chance!
