I'll post the 2 positive comments that I have - the canoeing is fun and the staff is very nice - BUT with that being said, the staff does nothing about supervising the campsites. This is a HEAVY partying place and although lots of young

I am writing my review simply because I have read the others. I do agree it is a lot of fun thru the daytime hrs. but at night it can be loud. I really do not think there is any real danger & I do not think anybody would want to come into our camp at nite & meet Red Dog. He loves & protects! Nobody likes a theif but a theif. If I ran the place a few things would be different, including security at nite. Take down all tag #'s at check in & out so you can track who is or has been there. No, my children wl not go around at nite w/o an adult. This place has wonderful potential with the right management technics.
ALL IN ALL I LIKE THE PLACE BUT SOME OF THE VISITORS HAVE BEEN DIS-TASTEFUL. By the way, I party but I also respect!

Beware!!!!

We were told by a nice gent upon registering afternoon Friday that all music would be off at 11PM. I had sons, grandsons and nephews with me. At 2AM Saturday morning, guitar picking and howling were still going on at the office on an outside deck. I had to go to the deck to ask for some consideration. The guitarist, also the owner's nephew as it turned out, was about as inconsiderate as you can get. As I tried to explain to the group of our lack of sleep and how I was sure that the other campers could not possibly sleep either, he continued playing basically as an "in my face" gesture. He had girlfriends and guys present, so it was a "big-man" sort of move. I leaned over to make certain he saw me and heard me. One young guy expressed an apology for the group and the music ended - 2:15AM!!! I owe that young man a "thanks for his kindness"!

The owner came up behind me at that time and said she had j-u-s-t "walked around the campsite" and "thought" the music was too loud. "THOUGHT!!!" I asked her if she wondered what the other 30-plus campers were thinking?

Next morning before we left for fishing and swimming fun, we found out that we had an ice chest of food stolen. Not the chest but water, Gatorade, and several snacks and lunchables for the day's trip. Beware! Lock up your goods, especially while you sleep, if you should visit even with this warning. I reported the thievery to the owner but as you can now imagine, there was no remorse at all for our loss. After all it was our loss, and she already had our money.

Fishing was not particularly good. The river is narrow without much cover. There were several nice deep swimming pools along the way and the kids enjoyed that part of the trip. Piney River is a beautiful part of creation.

As we returned to the campsite about 2PM Saturday afternoon, there were plenty of folks lining the rocky river beach. This is the Daytona-beach of Hickman County. If loud music, poor language, and "Busch - not the drink of champions" is your sort of thing, then Pinewood Canoe & Camp is the place for you. Our family will never visit again. And, I will not recommend this place to any others; in fact, I will sternly advise the opposite.

Tennessee is blessed with too many great places to hunt, fish, camp, and swim. REI has a good book about streams and rivers in Tennessee to visit. Check it out and we'll see you there!

Pros: The good: Piney River is picturesque

Cons: The bad: Campsite & management

My family and I had been planning a trip to the Piney RIver for weeks. We brought my mother, friends and my TWO YEAR OLD SON! We first noticed a problem when we started setting up our camp around 10:00 in the morning. We noticed that everyone around us was between the ages of 16-25 and DRUNK! Geez, we thought....it's only 10:00 in the morning!! After we set up camp, we decided to go ahead and begin our canoe trip. Now, honestly, that was a BLAST!! We enjoyed that more than anything! So when that was over we got back to camp, and had realized that they kids that were drunk at 10 AM were still there, now they were just even more DRUNK, and dropping words that I was embrassed for my mother to hear, yet alone my 2 year old (who repeats EVERYTHING!) Not to mention if these kids weren't cussing the stories that they were telling were awful! At this time we decided to go ahead a start a fire for our dinner, waiting for these kids to go home. As soon as we got our fire going, a FIGHT broke out right in front of our camp! Where was the owners now? Well let me tell you at one point a lady came down to "calm down" the group. Which this was a the funniest of all! I think she was just as drunk as these KIDS and I quote, " You aren't going to be doing that SH*% here calm yout F*cking A$$ down!" At this point we threw water over our campfire and packed up and went home! What a joke! DO NOT TAKE YOUR FAMILY HERE UNLESS YOUR TWO YEAR OLD KNOWS HOW TO KNIFE FIGHT! WE WERE SCARED FOR OUR SAFETY!!!

Pros: the canoe trip was amazing!

Cons: too many to name

.

The river ride was very nice: A three-hour trip with nice scenery, and wildlife everywhere. The kayaks and canoes were a joy to ride for all of our family. We met several nice people along the river, and there were ample places to swim, picnic or just relax. The staff was organized and put on a good trip. Thank you to the staff for offering such a nice way to spend a day.
However, that night as the day users left the camp the party started. We camped across the road from the main party area. There was a fire pit, an electrical hook up, water and a functional shower. Relaxing at the tent should have been an ideal time to unwind.
Almost 90% of the people around us were very young and drunk and/or casually using "recreational medication". Not bad if you are an adult and been around, but with children it felt threatening. At several points during the afternoon some of the drunks even made it a point walk over to our tent to tell my children and I how ??F*cked up!? they were. This was truly classless. There were several people running around yelling at each other or just shouting obscenities for no apparent reason. If I had a dollar for every time I heard the ??F? word or ??GD?, I could have paid to put all of Hickman County through college.
We were particularly scared as intoxicated patrons drove down a very large hill, scant feet away from our campsite. If the police had wanted to arrest people for DWI , it would have been like shooting fish in a barrel.
I could go on with several stories. However, I will not. We ended our camping trip at 00:34 hrs when I heard enough of foul language and loud radio for the rest of my life. We broke camp and made the hour and a half trip back home.
If you have children under the age of 18, DO NOT camp here unless you are ready for the above type behavior.

Pros: Excellent River Ride

Cons: Party Out of Control

The Piney River is very clear and scenic. Has lots of rock bluffs, places to jump, rope swings, deep swimming holes.. More current than most floats in the area. (not like whitewater, just enough so you don't have to paddle all the way) Also it is very remote and wooded so you can paddle in the shade quite a bit if you desire.

The Pinewood Canoe & Camp has a very nice 'beach' and swimming area, nice camp sites - some off completely by themself. This can be somewhat of a 'party' place, so if you are not into that or you have kids pick your camp site wisely. Very reasonable $ for shuttles if you have your own boat, and also a bargain for camping. The bath house has hot showers and is about the best I have seen in this area for 'river campgrounds'. And last but not least the owners are very friendly and helpful.

If floating and camping beside a clear cool river is your thing then I highly recommend Pinewood.

This is a great weekend excursion. I did the kayak trip and it was a blast. There is no guide, so you can make the trip at your own pace. I packed a lunch and stopped about half way and had lunch on the shore, took a swim before continuing on. There is also a campground and a bath house. The water was cold, but very clear and I saw lots of fish.
