On Friday March 30, my daughter took Bagel to this vet because he had labored breathing and kept falling over. Bagel was 11 years old. I was in the area and I met her there. The vet we saw was just out of school. She stated that the he could have had either kidney failure or heart failure and treating 1 or the other could cause the other organ to fail. She stated a blood panel would help us know more. His panel came back that it was just his heart. We were informed that he was on oxygen and would benefit from a day stay in the hospital on diuretics (to remove fluid from heart) and would go home with 3 medications. The vet stated Bagel was unhappy with the O2 mask and that was why he was barking in the back and he might be calmer in an O2 cage. I asked the costs and she stated $40 an hour. I declined since he already had O2 on. Since my daughter is in school I prepaid around $530 for Bagel's stay and my husband and I left to drive home to Nashville (5 hours away) We left Bagel at the hospital and my daughter called around 3 pm to check on him and was informed he was not happy with the mask and in the cage but was feisty. This hospital did not do overnight stays and has an on call 24 hour vet hospital they use. Around 6 pm my daughter was called and informed Bagel was doing well and ready to be picked up and go home. This is the hard part of the story. At 7 pm I receive a call from my daughter crying. She stated that Bagel's tongue is grey and he is panting hard and floppy. What should she do? I informed her to call the on-call vet to see if he should be brought in and given more diuretic. The on-call hospital told her he had enough medicine at the animal hospital and to wait until the next morning for his next dose of medicine. I received another call from my daughter 30 minutes later informing me Bagel would not stand up and was having a hard time breathing and what should she do?? I told her put him in his bed and carry him to the car to take to he vet!! She said hold on MOM!!! I'll call you back, he is pooping. 5 minutes later I received ONE OF THE MOST HEART WRENCHING CALLS I have ever received from my daughter. She was inconsolable and could barely speak. Our sweet dog passed away in her arms before she could get him out the door! Her dad and I had to locate a vet hospital she could take him to for cremation. She placed him in his favorite bed with all of his favorite toys and dropped him off at a place she didn't know on a Friday night, she was told they would place him in a freezer until Monday. We have had to say goodbye to another family dog of 15 years and the vet was kind and told us when it was time. Looking back, I believe they knew it was "time" for our sweet Bagel and instead of doing the humane and kinder thing, they chose to make money. If he was doing that poorly at the end of the day, why not tell my daughter he needed to be transferred to another vet hospital? My husband has called the hospital all last week requesting and asking to speak to the owner. He was requesting that they deduct half of the bill. 1) We had to pay for cremation 2) We felt they were not honest in representation of the true issues Bagel had. We were informed the owner would not do any reimbursement by the staff and the owner will not return our call. Another supporting action that shows Cherokee animal hospital in Johnson City, TN cares more about money than animals and their families.
I rarely make post such as this. But I am MAD our sweet dog suffered. I am MAD my daughter walked thru saying goodbye in such a terrible way and is left with that memory. I am MAD how this Vet has treated us in response to this incident. Please Share!

They will absolutely rip you off no matter what you station in life. Rippled my son off to the tune of 1000 for a cat they KNEW was dying, charging 300 for an enema on a cat who wouldn't eat! All trips will be made back to the vet in Elizabethton, they care and they tell you the truth. Rude, do not allow you to be with your pet in the back, do procedures without asking first.

I have been affiliated with Cherokee Hospital for Animals since 1986, initially as an employee as a licensed veterinary technician and over the past 20 years, as a client. The level of professionalism is second to none in all aspects of the organization; from Swan, who has taken care of our boarded animals for many years, to the front office ladies namely Mary, Angela, and Donna to the doctors themselves, especially Beth Sallee, D.V.M. I have trusted this staff with many animals over many years in far ranging animal care senarios. They have provided not just excellence in medical care but the level of knowledge and state of the art care is second to none.

Beyond the tangible medical care is the compassion and counseling that go hand in hand with a realtionship of this nature. With every beloved pet comes the time to deal with the end of that pet's life. They truly care about not just the business side of animal health but understand the bond between owner and pet and what the impending separation of a beloved pet means to the owner.

I additionally appreciate their mailed reminder system for health care follow-up appointment regarding vaccinations, etc.

My thanks for the people of Cherokee Hospital for Animals for being there for my family (the human ones) and for my other family (my pets) for so many years and for many years to come.

We recently moved back to JC and were debating between Cherokee and one other. The initial call was helpful and the staff very friendly. I asked for Dr. Lapthorne, hearing great things about her. She saw both of our dogs and gave one of the most thorough exams to date. She was kind and very helpful both in her explinations and her quick bond with our dogs. We are excited to have a knowledgeable vet who truely cares for all animals and their future well being. We are looking forward to working more with Dr. Lapthorne and Cherokee Animal Hospital in the future.

I have used Cherokee's services for fourteen years. For anyone to even suggest that they are rude or unprofessional is laughable. The girls are well informed, accomadating and polite to a fault. The techs are the best and I feel as if they care for my pet as much as I do. When I must board my dog I am very secure knowing they are as safe with the boarding employess as they would be at home. Dr Sallee is the most kind, caring and informed doctor you could hope to find for your pet. If she doesn't have an immediate answer she will search until she finds it. My dog is my child. I want the best for him. That is why I go to Cherokee.

I have been coming to Cherokee Animal Hospital for over 18 years. I would not even think of going elsewhere.
My pets have been treated with care, kindness and knowledge.
The extra research Dr. Sallee does for each problem or illness is amazing.
I am treated with respect and have grown very fond of each and every tech, office personal and assistant. They are professional, caring, devoted people that not only care for the animals they see but for their owners, as well.

This is by far the best place to take a pet in need. No vet has ever found so quickly what was wrong with my cat, who is healthy as ever. Everyone is extremely nice and caring. They know thier pets!

How anyone could ever insult any of the staff at Cherokee or question their intelligence is beyond me. The staff along with Dr. Sallee have saved my pets many times over. I have 11 dogs right now and they treat them as well as I do, which is amazing. My dogs are my kids and are treated as such at my home and in their hospital. The staff is very well educated in treating pets and coping with miserable clients. Why someone would waste their time insulting them is just nuts! If you aren't happy, go somewhere else so clients that appreciate them can have that time. Everyone I have spoken to in the lobby is as happy with them as I am. One of my pets had been given up on by everyone because of an allergic reaction to medication given by another vet and they managed to save her live. I would trust them with any of my pets because of their knowledge and education. Dr. Sallee and her staff are amazing and I will never change veterinarians. I will be forever grateful. I will pray for the poor soul who wasted their time insulting them.

The receptionists at Cherokee are by far the best staff of any vet I've been to--they are wonderful--and Dr. Simpkins is an excellent vet. You can't go wrong with her. (I personally do not care for Dr. Sallee and would go to another vet office if Dr. Simpkins were unavailable.) I have a hard time imagining any of the front office staff being rude to a client. My only complaint is that the prices seem relatively high.

Cherokee Animal Hospital is run by two of the nicest lady vets you could ever meet. Every time I took my dogs in, the ladies were so gentle and caring. One of our dogs was a pound puppy who was brought into the vets office with more ticks on her than fur. The vet pulled over 100 ticks off my puppy. She was so gentle. Even the lady at the reception desk was kind and understanding. The prices are about average, as far as vets go, but the hours are great. They are also an emergency vet, so someone is there all the time. They offer boarding services as well.
