We ate at Ban Thai recently at the recommendation of some friends that are long-time Memphians. We moved to Memphis from Chicago about 2 years ago and have had a hard time finding moderately priced restaurants with good food and a nice atmosphere. Bhan Thai definitely fits the bill!! There was a wait, even though we called ahead, but the outdoor patio and bar with live music was great and it passed the time easily. The service was a little slow but the restaurant was packed at 7:30p on a Friday night, so it wasn't a surprise. We will definitely eat here again!

The waiter who served us was rude and dissrespectful. We ordered fried rice and curry and when the plates came out there were no utensil. Plus, the portions of the rice was too small, so we ordered another order and asked for several spoons.. In response the waiter told us with an attitude, "we are very busy so order everything at one time." I was shocked and enraged. I mean how does he expect to eat curry without a spoon?. Also I have ate at this place several times, so I thought the portion of the rice was enough.. Unbeknowst to me, they have decreased their portion size dramatically, and I mean DRAMATICALLY. Another thing, if you are too busy to serve me and my friends properly then why did you take us? Last thing, the table we were seated at was companied by mosquitos. We were bitten several times by numerous mosquitos. The worst part about that was that we were seated inside the restaurant.! Take my advice and dont go if you want a nice evening.!!!!!

I have eaten at a lot of Thai places. And I do mean a lot, I count them in the dozens. It is far and away my favorite type of food, and I make a point of trying every Thai restaurant that I come across. I will admit that my sample size here is small, as I have only eaten here once, and I didn't even order an appetizer. What I did get though is a Thai standard and one that I have eaten at many restaurants and a good place to start a comparison. That dish of course was Red Curry. The curry was extremely sweet, sweeter than all but a handful of the places I have eaten at, but it melded the sweetness with a heart richness that made it exceptional rather than just sweet. The pork in it was prepared well and the spice level was very accurate and perfectly prepared for how I requested it. The atmosphere and decor is nice, and the fact its in an old house is quaint, but Thai places tend to always be decorated nicely and I would just consider it normal rather than something to hang its hat on. There was one problem though, the service was actually rather terrible and I had to wait for my drink to be refilled more than once. Not really a good thing when you are eating a very spicy dish. This is of course inexcusable for a restaurant of any ilk at all. Overall though the food is very tasty and if you are in midtown give it a try. Its not so much better than other Thai places though that I would drive out of downtown to eat there or if another Thai place was closer. I.E. the one downtown.

Bhan Thai is in the Peabody district, in a former residential home.

The interior is very pretty, and the seating is rather quick.

The menu offers a good selection of authentic Thai meals, that are all very tasty (and most pretty spicy). Best time to come is for dinner, but consider reservations. This place can be busy.

This place has the best outdoor patio dining in Memphis! The food is always excellent, the staff is friendly and quick! The owner is always at the restaurant helping out! Definitely need to check it out in the summer when the patio is open. Even on a warm night the patio tends to feel 10 degrees cooler! You must try!

Apparently the day to visit Bhan Thai is not on Tuesday, when their staff has had the weekend to party. We came for lunch, were seated for quite a while and when we placed our orders, the waitress came back and said that 1/2 of our orders could not be made because the cook who knew how to make them had not come into work (apparently they have 2 cooks who each specialize in different things.) Each thing we tried to replace it with was the same cook's specialty. After much frustration we were able to get our food, which was good, just not what we really wanted. ( WARNING---There are not really any items on the menu that a small child would find palatable. )

The decor is nice and hte restaurant is converted from an old house, which did not appear to be too wheelchair accessible. There is the option to eat on the porch if you would like.

If you are craving some specific menu item, be prepared to not be able to get it. If you are open to anything, this place might just be what you are looking for.

PROS: Food was hot, fresh and tasty
CONS: Menu may be limited by what staff is there that day

Bhan Thai's interior evokes the feel of someone's private home, as the restaurant is located in a historic house. But when weather permits, the spacious patio is the place to dine. As for the food, dishes are particularly saucy, but the…
