To operate in a southern city, they have a lot to learn. Food taste like it was prepared for a prison in New York. In fact, I bet prisons have better food. There is only one place in Brentwood to compare.......thats the city cafe. Both are

We love to eat at the little Mediterranean Cuisine in Maryland Farms, but being Labor Day, it was closed. So, we took a chance on Vittles. What luck! The atmosphere was open, friendly and breezy, the service cheerful and prompt. It was the FOOD that made our day though. My wife had a veggie plate with fried corn that would have made my mama proud. I had for once chicken livers that were by far the best I have ever had. Can't comment on the desserts, the list was long and looked tempting, but I could not even begin to eat one of the corn muffins I was so full. If you want real NON CRACKERBARREL cooking, this is the place.

I had an awesome experience at this place. The food is amazing! I was a little skeptical of the "Meat and 3" at first because it made me think of cafeteria style food-Definitely not the case. My co workers would go on and on about this Vittles place so I finally gave in and went in one evening with my wife and we LOVED it. They literally have the best pot roast I have ever had. They said its slow cooked all night and is ready to go by lunchtime-it falls apart and melts in your mouth. And the fried chicken tenders were HUGE too-they're really, really juicy . They've got about 30 vegetables you can choose from and they give you 2 or 3 to pick out with every meal. Our waiter was great too. My wife and I aren't really used to having a really personable waiter/waitress, but this kid takes the cake. He has a witty sense a humor and a fantastic argument as to why he waits tells you his name after you place your order, ask him ... This is hands down an A+ restaurant. And it will definitely stay in my top 3- if not number 1

If you want to enjoy a great dining experience then you need to eat at Vittles. I eat at Vittles at least twice a week and my food is always great. The owners treat you like family, the servers are incredibly friendly, and the cooks deliver a high quality meal. You will not find a better place in Nashville that serves vegetables this good! All the desserts are fabulous as well. If you are in the Brentwood area, Vittles is a must for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

I am single, and eat out 90% of the time. My favorite place to eat, by far, is Vittles. They are a wonderful, home-style food restaurant. Vittles is always clean, and the employees are very efficient and friendly. You always see a smiling face. Not only is the food excellent, but I see country music stars, song writers, and Titans football players enjoying their meals. It's a great place to eat, and I've never had one complaint. I highly recommend you try it!

My family and I are regular Vittles customers, and have never had one bad experience. The reviews below me are outrageous and untrue...Vittles food is exceptional and one of a kind. The staff and owners are kind and friendly people who always make their guests feel like family. You might even catch a Titans player or country music star their every once in a while... I will be a life long customer of Vittles....

Everytime I have been to Vittles in Brentwood, I have had a great experience. Their food is great and prices you cannot beat at any other resturant for a meat and 3! Family owned and managed, great employees. I would highly recommended Vittles to anyone who loves down home southern cooking!!!

When I eat out I hate wasting money. This place served us cold food and the waiter really was not on top of anything. I have been there before and experienced the same thing. Since the manager is the owner, I would guess that nothing will ever change until it is sold or goes out of business. We certainly will not eat there again. I prefer to have hot food that is good. I cannot get that at this place

I will say, on all my tours as a connoisseur of fine southern food, this was the most unpleasant experience I??ve encountered. Melting oil based cheese product over undercooked macaroni, stuffing a piece of chopped "steak" thinner than a Krystal patty between an inch of low-grade breading, deep frying it and calling it country fried steak, and the ever glorious ice cream ball of mashed potatoes covered in watery gravy shows an unseen level of ignorance to what southern food is about.

The only thing that was worse than the food was the service. After sitting at the table for at least ten minutes our order was haphazardly taken. By this time my dining companion had finished her tea but our waitress was not to be seen for the next 20 minutes.

Once our food arrived we noticed that one of the orders had been butchered. Aside from the main course of frozen grilled chicken tenders dryer than the rice they were atop of, all three of the sides were incorrect. Rather than even attempting to get the orders corrected we choked down as much as we could and took the rest home for the dog.

Arriving at the register, we waited another eight to ten minutes for the cashier to finish taking a phone order before cashing us out. Ninety minutes and $25.00 poorer we made our peace with our dining experience and left.

Once I arrived home I decided to see if anyone else had had such a deplorable meal, because this establishment came highly recommended by some friends (granted that they are from Boston). I was blown away when I came across the restaurants webpage and clicked on their story.

My philosphy was simple --
"serve down-home cookin' ... fast and friendly"
I was raised on "good ol' country-cookin' " that my mom would prepare for our family every day. We always had plenty to eat and we knew how to clean our plates. Mom provided a choice of main courses and more vegetables and side items than we could possibly eat. Everything she prepared was seasoned just right, delivering that down-home taste. This style of cooking has become a lost art in today's fast-paced world, but at Vittles we have recaptured many of those great dishes and desserts of yesteryear.
My hope is that you will enjoy the food and your dining experience here at Vittles and you will share your experience with friends and family.

All I can say is that if you are looking for some classic down home cooking you would be better off to brave the corporate machine of Cracker Barrel than to step anywhere near Vittles. Better yet, try a real southern cuisine master in Nashville such as, Wendell Smiths Restaurant, located on Charlotte Pike in West Nashville or Elliston Place Soda Shop, located across from Exit/In on Elliston place. Never in my life have I left my table with excess Mac-n-cheese and cornbread, and hopefully I never will again.

Cons: Just read the review

I don't think goloth actually went to Vittles when they wrote their review. They mentioned waiting for their credit card to be returned to them when they paid and Vittles doesn't do that. You pay at the register.

That being said, I would highly recommend this restaurant for service, quality of food, portions and value. I've yet to have a meal there that I didn't like and they have always been prompt and friendly. Their selection of entrees and sides is outstanding. There's something for everyone at a reasonable cost. It's become a favorite restaurant of my co-workers and even one of my vendors always likes to take us there for lunch when they visit. It's just that good!

After reading of the high praise in some of the reviews I decided to visit this restaurant for the first time; What a mistake that was.
1. From the beginning the hostess was rude, not even looking up when asking how many were in our party, two, she proceeded to drop menus on the table, and collected rolled flatware from another table.
2. 10-15 minutes elapsed before the server finally arrived and took our drink order.
3. We were finally able to place our meal order after another 10 minutes which took 15-20 to return to our table, which is actually fast for quality food that must be prepared.
4. During our meal another customer got up and left after waiting 20-30 minutes without a server ever visiting her table even for water. The hostess could have checked on her or the server who was chatting in the unoccupied end of the store.
5. We had to repeatedly ask for refills on water and coffee.
6. Finally requesting our check we waited 20 minutes, if not more, for our payment to be processed and an additional 5 before my card was returned.

This level or service would be acceptable if, and I stress if, the restaurant was crowded, busy, or short staffed. We were one of 3 tables occupied and there were 4-5 servers walking around and chatting. Perhaps it was a bad day for the server in our section however this level of service, or obvious lack thereof, is unacceptable and I will not only not recommend it but I will make sure others know it as well.

Cons: The service and the attitude of the wait staff was unaceptable.

my family and i were very pleased with the price & quality of the food, not to mention the positive attitude of the workers. its in a nice part of town, and plenty of parking. another thing we liked is the fact that it was open early, 7:00 am. (which is good, when your hungry, at breakfast-time) if the LORD is willing, and im still alive, i'll be back!

I really like this restaurant. It is unassuming, peaceful, and family-oriented. The food is good home-cooked meals. Yes, no fancy flair, but that's just fine. If you want to pay for fancy, go somewhere else. The prices are excellent and the food is plentiful.

I haven't had a bad meal ... nothing greasy ... nothing a disappointment.

I'm sorry that some reviewers have had disappointing visits ... This restaurant's name itself should tell you that it's basic, home-cooked meals without charging for the frills. The food is very similar to what my grandmother served and eating at Viddles takes be back to when I was a girl. Thank you, Vittles!!

I'm glad I didn't read some of these reviews before I ate there last September, 2003! The food is good, prices fair! The atmosphere outside the restaurant is the same as with others around town!! My food was not greasy or too salty! I don't consider Vittles a wannabe Cracker Barrel!!
July 6th, 2005 Im appalled at some of the remarks several people have made here. If they don't like the food there they should just eat at home and have their usual frozen meal!! They obviously have taste buds that aren't working properly! :) I found the food to be delicious and I savored each bite. And I was brought up eating food, homemade from scratch, by my late mother! She was a wonderful cook and I miss her very much and all of her southern style food made with love!

Ignore the pompous foodies and the fools comparing this down home cooking to Cracker Barrel ! I'm a NYer and, although I'm not opposed to spending $300 for dinner for 2 for insanely phenomenal food, this place ranks in the top 10 for places I've eaten on the road ! The pot roast on homemade white bread was simple, well seasoned, absolutely delicious ! I discovered this place on my last day in Brentwood after a 10 day stay on business. had it been sooner, I'd have eaten nothing but for the whole stay ! I've been dying to get back and will be taking a round-about trip home from Cincy next week just for a plate of pot roast !

Well, if you are looking for good, flavorful, southern-style food this is NOT your place. The pot roast is tough and stringy, gravy tastes straight from a can, bland chicken and dumplings. The squash is bitter tasting, and the cabbage has no seasoning. They couldn't even get my son's grilled cheese right.....cheese not melted at all. I would go somewhere else, because this is not grandma's food!

It is obvious that the "official" reviewer didn't grow up in a home with good Southern cooking, or Vittles would have seemed like heaven. I'd go there again just for the chess pie (which was, frankly, better than my great grandmom's). Fried chicken is meant to be greasy, pot roast should be almost disintigrated, and good Southern-style veggies are always mushy. This resteraunt should be near Swett's, not in stuffy Brentwood. It isn't avant guarde cuisine -- it's homestlye. And quite good at that.

Vittles serves scrumptious Chicken & Dumplings on Thursdays. Unlike other restaurants, they don't take the easy way out and serve 'biscuit' style dumplings. No, they actually serve authentic brothy Chicken & Dumplings with rolled dumplings! These are as good as my own homemade, and much easier!

The service was prompt and attentive, and the menu a delight. I will be going back often!

They offer country fried steak, country fried porkchops, country fried chicken (do you sense a theme here?) and many other southern delights...

You pay at the front, so you do have to wait in line before you can leave, instead of the server taking your check.

Huge portions, fast service, polite servers...it's got it all. The atmosphere is comfy; good for families and kids.
