I wouldn't give this one star but I had to. Let me start with the obvious, the owner is horrible to his customers. And every takes it! He's rude and disrespectful. He is trying to be the "Soup Nazi" from Seinfeld but the difference is

Cons: parking downtown is expensive

My girlfriend and I went to Sam's for the 1st time not to long ago. We were polite and courteous and when he asked us if we had been there we both said no. He still served us; it probably was because we had a good attitude and we made ourselves interesting company by talking about school. We had a huge plate full of great sushi and two drinks for only $13.50. I can't even get two rolls for that elsewhere and for a broke college student like myself I can't beat it. My advice if you're new: be kind and let Sam run the show. Don't act like a sushi know it all but pick from the list and be understanding. Sam will take care of you, like he did with us.

Sam is a great guy as long as you treat him with respect and offer him some interesting conversation. He does serve new costumers, if you come with a regular. His sushi is cheap and delicious. By far my favorite place to go for sushi in Nashville, not just for the food but for the interesting conversation

Sam really didn't want to be there and it shows. You can do much better by going elsewere.

Yes, Sam has the cheapest sushi in nashville, but you get what you pay for. sloppy rolls of mostly rice. its not good sushi. taste of tokyo had better sushi and its shut down.

sam is a top notch a**hole. he once yelled at a friend of mine because she asked politely if he could split up our bill, even after we had written our orders on TWO separate tickets. we even followed the strict ordering policy. bulls**t.

another friend of mine was told to leave once because she had piercings and tattoos. sam said she was "an ugly girl". im not makin this up.

i stopped going a while ago, but i hear that now he only serves regulars. not to sound cliche, but this is america, and thats just not how its done.

start acting like a reasonable human being sam, or go home.

I have been in Nashville now for two weeks and so far have tried five different sushi restaurants. Today I was privileged enough to try Mr. Sams city renowned sushi. Coming from a person who loves his sushi and eats sushi almost everyday, I was not impressed. Clearly it was my own fault. I had set my expectations to high for Mr. Sams sushi and totally ignored how much I was paying. That said, for the price I paid it was what you should expect.
Let me break it down for you.
Judge your restaurant on these basics standards:
Price, Perfect for what it was
Quality, See Price
Service, Self Serve here
Location, Hard to find for tourist, good for locals
Envoirment, Good Luck
Overall Expeirence Everyone should try it once but say you been before.
Inside joke. you'll see.

Thank you. For more info on other restaurants in the city e-mail me: vhernande23@hotmail

Pros: It was cheap

Cons: Felt like I was a prisoner

Simply the best sushi for the money in the area. Sam was extremely nice when we visted, and the sushi was very tasty. I will be going back next week!

Pros: Great tasting sushi, cheap, HUGE portions

Cons: not a thing

...I stopped by Sam's and got the same treatment by Sam as the last poster only this time it was in the evening. Apparently Sam likes hipsters "his friends" more than making money. There are three other sushi bars in a four block radius two of which are rated #1 and #3 on list. I'd recommend Koto.

We had been hearing about Sam's for a while so 4 of us went for lunch. We walked in, Sam asked if we were new, we were. He said he only served regulars and he would not serve us. I have never been treated like that.

Sam is wonderful. He's tough, but a nice guy when you scratch the surface. He makes wonderfully authentic, Japanese sushi and boy is it delicious! It's a small place, but the food and prices more than make up for the lack of elbow room. I went there with my best friend back in April of 08. We couldn't believe the quality, quantity and value! All excellent! LOVE IT! Highly recommend. Thanks for taking me out for the best, Walt! Love ya! xo

Pros: Food was delicious, price was amazingly cheap

Cons: small, not a lot of seating, had to pay to park

Food is cheap, taste "OK", long wait during lunch hour, and he's very rude sometimes. Also, you can order whatever you want, but he will give you whatever HE wants. Not recommended, unless you?d exchange your pride for some cheap food.

Sam's is truly everything that you've heard and more. He is the sushi Nazzi behind the counter, which I never would have believed had I not seen him kick someone out. Not only is the food extremely affordable, but it tastes great too. Sam will tell you where to get better tasting food, but he'll also tell you he's the cheapest, but to me it's great. If you are going with a group you'd be better to go after 1PM, but just one or two people can probably squeeze in if you go early.
After you stuff yourself with his sushi, you get a great treat of Valencia orange slices (so good you'd pay extra for more if he'd let you). I have nothing bad to say of this place, except don't tip, no matter how much you'd like to. Make sure to read the signs if you're new or else you could get cut or kicked out.

Sam's Sushi isnt the most spacious, or most fancy place, but it is true to its name.....there is Sam and there is sushi, and both are wonderful.....You get HUGE helpings, and since its a one man operation, there are low overheads which means LOW PRICE (Lunch special is 2 HUGE rolls of sushi for under 5 bucks)...other sushi spots in downtown area charge 6 bucks for ONE sushi roll)....I love this place!!!

Sam is defniatley a charactor! Worth checking out!

Sam will admit that he is not the best sushi in Nashville, but he is the cheapest.
A group of 3 can order all the food they can eat, and be out the door for arround $20

Sam's is superb. The lunch special of one sushi roll and 3 pieces of nigiri for $4.75 is a great value: the sushi rolls are huge--8 pieces, each about 1" deep and 1.5" in diameter. When I've been I've gotten an extra piece of nigiri! Eel and yellowtail are excellent.
You must order properly. Write what your order, name, and if you'd like it to go on a notepad. Place the paper on the sushi case if there is room. If not, wait until there is. Try to go after 1:30pm, especially if you are new. When we were the only diners there--around 2:30pm, Sam regaled us with stories of travel and politics, and was generous in response to our naivete of his procedures. When I went back and there were a few other parties there and I forgot to write my name, I was gently reprimanded. Worth it!

I commute to Nashville from time to time and this place is great. I have some friends there and am more than happy to take them to Sams if they like sushi. The food is good the value for your money is great. And the ambiance is hilarious. The place is tiny, I go there and pull off the newbie routine. They guy starts to blow his stack. I act confused and he gets madder. Then after asking a thousand pardons he calms down. Then ask if he serves burgers? Its all over again. The place is a lot of fun. I do not think the guy is really serious hard to tell.

Sam's sushi is my favorite sushi place in nashville. I work downtown and go there at least once a week. I always loved sushi, but hated paying a lot and leaving hungry, until my friend pointed out this place. The lunch special gives more sushi than you can eat for only $4.75. The only problem is that the place is small. grab orders to go at rush times to avoid a crowd.

I've been going to Sams for a little over a year, and continue to do so. Good sushi, excellent prices, and he's a character! Best for "to go" or a couple - the restaurant is small. One of the best parts of the meal is the fresh valencia orange slices - sometimes still ice cold if you eat quickly enough.

OK, in the past week I've now eaten here twice. Not only is it GREAT sushi, but it's dirt cheap. And he has this tasty hot chili sauce - YUM!!! I've only gone during slow times, & it's so small that's what I'd suggest since it's small & it's only Sam in there. If you like sushi & don't mind going to a dive to get GREAT food - then check it out!

I work downtown, so any type of eatery outside of the "arcade" is a treat. This guy's place is a hole in the wall. However, his sushi rolls are huge, cheap, and really good. He works solo, and is a little temperamental, so you better know what you are doing before you go in there, or you'll get cussed. And if you try to tip him, he will cut you. My favorit thing to do is go in there, order, and then watch the rookies roll up and ask Ken for something off the menu. Probably my 2nd favorite sushi in town.
