My party and I had a horrible experience at Virago. We waited nearly an hour and a half for our food, no apology from the waitress, no offer of discounted food or drinks... It was horrible! And when the food finally rolled around 90 minutes later, it was mixed up and nobody working there seemed to have any idea which was which! You'd think that with an hour and a half, they would have figured that one out... I'm never going here again!

Pros: Atmosphere wasn't bad

Cons: Awful service, Overpriced

My husband & I went here for Valentines. We were seated promptly (without a reservation). The waiter was terrible, however. He introduced himself and then proceeded to walk passed us numerous times for 15 mins. It was very irritating. The food did come in a reasonable time and the ambience was nice. It was just that stupid waiter. At least he gave my husband and I something to laugh about for the rest of the evening.

Pros: Best sushi in Nashville

Cons: Service

I was introduced to Viragos by a very dear friend of mine and I have been a fan since my first visit 3 years ago! Everyone that I have taken with me loves it as well. I go for the atmosphere and of course the SUSHI! My favorite roll is the YUM YUM roll, but last Wednesday I discovered another one that is AWESOME! You must have the Rising Sun, I know it is $20 for 6 pieces but it was money well spent. The fact it doesnt have rice in it makes it very light but it is packed with flavorful fish. Looking forward to going this summer when the windows are open and the cool breeze of the night is blowing thru!

I absolutely loved Virago!!! The Godzilla roll is to die for!! The service was wonderful and the atmosphere was modern, yet inviting. I will go back again!

Pros: Parking was convenient and valet is available and appreciated on a busy night.

Cons: None...I had a wonderful experience!

This was my 3rd or 4th time going but each of the previous times I went, I went with large groups when the place was slammed so I thought if I went at a non busy time the experience would be different. I was so wrong, the hostesses and waitresses are simply rude. The food was not good and the servers did nothing to fix the problem but look at us like we had 3 heads. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemies, find another place to spend money and take your friends out if a good experience is what you are in search of.

Romantic atmosphere, very cozy seating. The desserts are exquisite! Gotta try "Between the Sheets" with a good Merlot. Very Trendy, fun girls night out

very good food and service was good.
the bar area was way too small so you felt cramped waiting on the rest of your friends to show up.

Eww- I just ate here after hearing it was a "trendy" place with good eye candy. Not so. Everyone there is trying WAY to hard! Where were all the "hot" people? I just saw really desperate, old (30's) guys who were trying so hard to look like they had money. Go here if you want to talk to the lamest guys in nashville. The sushi is okay, but the drinks are so weak! Don't waste your best dress on this place!

I have been here several times and the one thing that stood out was the horrible service and noisy atmosphere. It took and "act of congress" to get the servers attention for another drink for my friends and i! I will say the food is pretty good but the service and noise brings that down unfortunately.

I am here to relay my fantastic experience I had at Virago last week. Jamie the bartender was not only professional and attentive, but extremely attractive as well. At my place of work, there is nasty vending machine food, and no eye candy. It is nice to get off work, relax with good company and enjoy the view.

Four of us went to Virago on a recent hot summer night. The guys wore linen shorts & dress shirts; ladies wore dresses. We were told at the door "shorts weren't allowed". Hum, let me get this straight. No dress shorts, but torn & faded blue jeans w/"slept-in AC/DC" t-shirts were fine. We've been in exclusive country clubs that require collared shirts & shorts are acceptable (as long as they aren't cargo shorts). So I'm not sure what Virago's trying to be when it grows up (exclusive club? Then advertise it as so). I learned a lot that night. A) There's a moronic dress code at Virago B) That Virago needs to realize that this is Nashville, not Boston (what happened to our hip West Coast attitude?) C)That Virago is touted as Asian but is run by Nazis. C) That we went elsewhere & had a much better meal D) I've had great sushi & to get it, I don't have to go to Virago. Hell, I'll just go to Tokyo.

OK, Nashville is a great little city with nice people. People just plain care about other people. This place was the opposite. Even the people taking reservations are horrendously rude. Go to any other restaurant in town.
Management - shame on you!

DINNER DATE WAS MAY 16-2008--I went recently in May for a birthday dinner for a work friend. I was appalled at their lack of customer service for such a "high class" eatery. There were 6 of us, and they seated us at a crowded bar top table, and left us to pull up the extra chairs, birthday girl included! The retaurant surroundings were very posh-but the service was not. We repeatedly had to ask our server her name, to get her attention-as she did not seem to want to tell us or introduce herself upon seating our party. Finally after multiple requests to take our drink order-she did. Then when the food came one fo the girls in our party sent her sushi back after eating one-and discovering this dish was simply not to her liking. She then re-ordered and recvd another entree. Upon paying our tabs before heading out--she found she was charged for BOTH! After speaking w/ the manager-who refused to comp her wasted, uneaten meal-she was still charged for 2 DINNERS. At which point we all gathered together and demanded they give her the paid for xtra dinner in a to-go box! They made her a half portion only to go. I was extremely embarassed for our friend-who it seems a rude manager bullied and took advantage of. I do not plan on returning. The drinks were overpriced and the RUDE service was too pathetic to ignore...Go for drinks, but be prepared to pay for whatever they feel like putting on your bill.

My friends and I were just discussing Virago today. I absolutely am addicted to their sushi...in fact last summer- I was there almost every monday night for half priced sushi monday. One would think that being a loyal patron who ordered massive quantities of sushi- the wait staff would be polite and courteous. This was not the case. It is not at all wheelchair accessible and no effort was made to accomodate my wheelchair- when I asked if I could stash it some place so I would not be hanging out in the aisles- the hostesses acted like it was an atrocious request and was somehow cluttering the pretentious flair of their lounge.

However- their food and martinis and delicious. Overpriced- but delicious.

I have to agree with the other bad reviews. This place gives a new meaning to "bad service". The wait staff and manager are also very rude. The food was ok at best. The atmosphere was pretentious and very uncomfortable. Matter of fact, my wife had spilled a $14.00 martini after taking one sip and they would not comp the drink. After speaking with the manager he told me it was their "policy" and there was nothing he could do. That's messed up. Anyway, I wouldn't reccomend this place to anyone. Go to Ru Sans, Sams or Ichiban.

Cons: Terrible service!!!!

So I am not a really trendy atmosphere kind of person but whatever I am going to eat because it's a RESTAURANT.....yeah. The sushi is amazing. Yeah sometimes I think I could buy the same tasting thing at publix but ya know this sushi is big and scrumdiddlyumptious and I like sitting at a table while chatting and being served and Publix doesn't offer that. I had no problem with the service. I have only gone with big groups of friends so I don't really notice because I am talking the whole time. If you are going with just a couple or something it might be different. I like that they serve my regular Bud Light....feels more like home. I had a $8 cosmo and it did nothing for me..I swear till this day it had no alcohol in it. It didn't give me the slightest buz and I hadn't even eaten yet!!! but whatever back to the sushi because that is the word that matters here since it's a SUSHI restaurant. And don't get all bent out of shape if they add an 18% tip onto your bill automatically when there is a big group....A LOT of restaurants do that and it's fair....these people don't get paid much per hour so you are basically paying them their hourly pay. And they have like 50 billion tables to serve so I'm sure they forget every now and then...everyone makes mistakes. If the fancy drinks don't make you happy then just drink beer so you can get full and save your sushi for the next day ! yay! and don't be a snob and not eat leftover fish. Please! or just don't drink at all and save money! yay!! the sushi is a must...give it a try!! I love it!!!!! and it's also fun to dress cute here because after all you will be "seen" hahahaha :-) have a great day while eating sushi!!!!!

We went to Viragos almost weekly for the past year. Usually the service is good, and the sushi is always good. Recently, they have changed what I consider the best filet and limited their non sushi menu selection. The last time we got the new filet, it was sitting in water and the 'new' wasabi potatoes are horrible. The waitress said they are changing the menu so please pay attention to the details of the menu. Great sushi, few other non sushi choices.

I have been to Virago two times, and it's been great both times. I'm a very picky eater, and even I found something great to eat. I will admit they are a little overpriced, but the atmosphere is worth it.

I've been to Virago many times and never really thought much about it...not too good, not too bad. I went there for trendy events and birthdays. Well recently I read the reviews and then went the same night with my friends only to find out that all the Bad Reviews were absolutely True! They are rude and slow. I love sushi and was really looking forward to some, but by the time the server came to take our order, we had decided Virago would be a drinks only stop for us. We left and went somewhere else for food. (Drinks were slow, staff was extremely rude, policys were ridiculous, we had to leave by a certain time so another party could meet their reservation..okay makes sense..but how come I couldnt get anyone to answer the phone when I tried to call for reservations?) Dont go. Plenty of other great places in Nashville...anything is better than Virago.

I heard that this place had some pretty good sushi. I went about a year ago and had cooked food and it was average but over-priced. I wanted to go back to try the sushi. The fish is not fresh and 2 out of the 6 people I was with got sick. The service is horrible and they have attitudes. Over-priced and really bad. Needless to say, I will not go back. The drinks are weak too.

Virago's uber-hip environment also offers up some of the most unique and fresh sushi in town. If you find yourself in the Music Row area and have a hankering, give it a try. It gets pretty busy as the evening rolls on, so arrive early if you don't want a wait.

Virago was an excellent place at one time, but not any longer. We (generally a group of 6-10) would spend at least one night a week eating at Virago, that has stopped and doubt it will begin again. The staff are rude, they are slow, they are forgetful. I understand one server having a bad night or two, but when all the staff have the same overall attitude and lack of service skills, one must look to the management/owner of an establishment. I typically find dining in Nashville is "on it" or "misses it" on an overall basis, not like home in NYC, but Virago is a just a big miss. I would encourage individuals to read the reviews on here and anyone who rates this place above a 3 star establishment must work, manage, or own Virago. There are other great places in Nashville to be "seen," plus you will have a better meal to go along with it.

I finally visited Virago, this spot that my co-workers have been raving about. It was nothing like I expected. It was a Tuesday evening and it was crowded and loud. The atmosphere was much like a sports bar. I could barely have a conversation with my guest without yelling across the table. The drinks we ordered were mediocre at best. Mine was only half full! On the plus side, the service was decent, our waitress and valet were nice. All and all, Virago was a huge disappointment and I will not be returning.

I'm from Nashville but now live in Chicago. I flew in for the weekend and was dreaming about Virago's Sushi and Chocolate Martini's. I reserved a table for 10 for my closest friends. When I arrived one of my dear friends who had driven up from Murfreesboro was turned away because he was wearing shorts. Now they were nice shorts and he had a nice shirt on as well - in addition it was 100 degrees outside! Also, before he made the hike from M'boro to Nashville he looked online to see if there was a 'dress code' and there was nothing mentioned about 'no shorts'. So until you make the drive, valet the car and walk up to the door and see a small sign you have no way of knowing. I talked to the Manager and they wouldn't budge - they said it was the owners policy - I guess they've never heard of empowerment. So I took my party of 10 to the Bound'ry where they accepted us, our shorts and our money graciously. Oh and while we were pleading with the Manager to be let in a girl with shorts was allowed in. They said that it was okay for 'girls' even though the sign said 'persons' not just 'men'.
I understand policies etc. but that was a bit absurd - he was appropriately dressed and again it was over 100 degrees. Virago's is supposed to be trendy not stuffy. They lost 10 good customers that night and we'll be spreading the word.

For the past two years, I have been a regular patron at Virago for happy hour and have grown to love sushi because of this establishment. Yes, Virago is one of the more trendy establishments in Nashville and there CAN be some lapses in the service department, but if you carve out your own niche there and find your home, going to Virago will be as welcome and pleasant of an experience as going to your neighborhood juke joint. The first thing to keep in mind is that Mondays ARE insane due to the half price sushi, so expect a wait. Second, sitting in the restaurant can lend itself to some less than stellar service--sit AT the bar and all will be golden. The guys (and gal) that man the bar are top notch and on top of their game. Never, not even once, have I been neglected by one of the bartenders at Virago. They're prompt with getting you your drinks, they are friendly, creative and they know their business very well. Additionally, many of the bartenders are easy on the eyes in addition to being very proficient at their craft. Happy Hour at Virago will also lend itself to some really great bargains--top shelf martinis for $4--you can't beat that. The bar CAN get a little smoky but if you want prompt, courteous and aesthetically pleasing service, you can't go wrong by sitting at the bar. Personally I'm not a trendy scene obsessed person, and in other like establishments I have felt a little out of place. You will NEVER feel this way at Virago if you follow my instructions and sit at the bar. Oh, and the sushi is out of this world!

Pros: Best Bartenders Around, Fantastic Sushi, Great Happy Hour

Cons: Restaurant service is lacking

.

I've been going to Virago almost twice a week for the past two years. As someone who knows the place pretty well, I'd love to clarify the negative reviews. 1) Yes, you will wait a long time for a table and it gets tremendously crowded on Monday nights because of half price night. 2) Tuesdays are great because most everyone was there the night before for half price night. 3) Yes, you will most likely get horrible service if you sit ANYWHERE ELSE outside of the bar area. 4) I've never waited longer than 15 minutes to get my food. 5) I've never had trouble getting reservations, even on a Saturday night and only calling to make "said reservation" an hour before opening. 6) I've never been overcharged on my credit card b/c I've always had great service. If they took more off your card, you deserved it b/c you should have known better than to go to a trendy upscale place and leave a placid tip. 7) If you love sweet martinis, try the Syn...it goes great with a crispy fire crunch or a yum yum roll. This place is one of the greatest things Nashville has going for it. Dont "dawg" it just because you don't like trendy atmospheres.

Pros: Half Price martinis every weekday between 5-7, the bartenders, amazing sushi and desserts, always an open bar chair when I arrive straight from work...

Cons: Drinks get pricier after 7

I honestly can't understand why anyone would give this place a bad review. Don't give it two stars becuase it's not your cup of tea. Maybe you should just go to Denny's. I understand a 4 star rating, but 2!??? Wendy's gets better than that. Now that we all know what an excellent critic you are, you can move on to the next great restaurant and bash it...oh yeah, and when you keep righting bad reviews, it makes Nashville look bad.

This place is my favorite place in Nashville. Not only is the food amazing, but you get what you pay for at the bar too. The scene is fantastic - lots of hip, young people. Like I said, if you don't like to hang out at trendy places with great food, then you shouldn't be writing a review about one.

Virago is one of the trendiest places in Nashville! Not only is the sushi phenominal, but the scene is one to be a part of. Angry/Impatient diners Beware! It takes time to get a table, service, and food...especially on 1/2 off Mondays. Also, make sure that you ask your server which rolls are half off. Before I was a Monday night regular, I made the mistake of ordering some of the sushi that was not half price. Whoops. My cheap date turned in to an expensive night out. Please be prepared to have a couple of drinks before you actually get your sushi. When you have all the time in the world, this is the most amazing place! Try the Thai Roll!!!

Went to Virago last night with my Girlfriend. I should've heeded the reviews which told me not to go there. The service is TERRIBLE. We had this waiter named "Dennis". The black shirt fits the attitude very well. When you go to a place, and it advertises something 1/2 off, you expect whatever is advertised to be 1/2 off. Well, not so much at Virago. 1/2 Sushi does not mean 1/2 Sushi. It means only a couple of rolls are 1/2 off. Dennis wasn't nice enough to tell us that before we ordered.
Food took forever to arrive. You should go to Virago right after your last meal. By the time the food arrives, you'll be hungry again.
To top it all off, I checked my account today and found a little discrepancy. They helped themselves to more money than was their due. I read one more review here which described the same problem. I hope I won't get the same condescending attitude that the other reviewer got. If you steal money, you should be anything but condescending.

Pros: Good Sushi

Cons: Everything else that comes with that restaurant

Virago was once my favorite restaurant in Nashville, but those days are over. After the remodel and expansion the place has become the new trendy spot for drinks. Too bad the service is horrible now. It's nearly impossible to get a table at a reasonable time and the process requires calling, leaving you're info, and waiting for the "reservationist" to call you back. This place was once a clam date spot, but is now a loud bar -- usually packed wall to wall-- of young "professionals".

Pros: great for drinks, young crowd

I went there because some friends told me that war really trendy. That was a huge mistake. I found the service really bad: more than once we have to repeat the order because the waiter forgot about it. It is also bad that they don't have any traditional sushi and the Nigiri that I tried with octopus was really bad. On top of it I left a tip according to what I thought was the right one considering my experience. You know what, they charged me 2 dollars more than what I have allowed! If they wont a 20% fixed as tip they should put it directily in the bill and not take it without the authotization of the client.

We went to Virago last Thursday night. It was not overly busy and there was a short wait. Once we got seated it took forever for the waitress, who was not friendly, to take our order. Once we ordered it was literally over 1 hour to get our food and our table only ordered one entree and 4 sushi rolls. This should not have taken over an hour for our food. I doubt I will go back again. I have always heard geat things about this restaurant, and my experience was quite the opposite.

Monday nights are no longer the dead nights but now 1/2 price maki (ONLY SOME- ask your server) and sake. MAKE RESERVATIONS. Typically EVERY table has a reservation on it so either show up early or late or come prepared to sit at the bar. The bar also tends to have the best service (including a great blonde bartender I think named Ben?). Avoid Dennis the waiter, avoid Mondays unless you are willing to be annoyed and jostled. If the price is important to you show up at 5:30 for a seat at the bar. Try the first crunch roll and the great tartare appetizer, my mom is still talking about it after visiting nashville weeks ago. Also, the "between the sheets" is one of the best desserts in Nashville. In sum, I love the food but always know to be in a certain mindset when I go. Takeout may be a better option if you want to try the food but are in a rush, are easily annoyed, or hate smoke (its EXTREMELY smoky.) (BUT no takeout on mondays). Also, Virago would be well served by clarifying their dress code. Like another poster I had a friend drive all the way there and be turned away because of shorts in over 100 degree weather.

This place is pretty cool. Coming from Las Vegas and having experienced alot of cool & fun places...Virago would be a place I would definately visit again. A layed back, cool atmosphere without being overly pretentious. Good sushi, great place to meet new friends.

I recently dined at Virago on August 21st and had a horrible experience. My debit card was ran twice, and when I called Virago, I was assured that it would be corrected. It has been 3 weeks and the issue is not resolved. It is really not so much the amount of money involved but centers more on the way the staff has handled my phone requests. I have been told "Honey it takes time to process these things." Coming from a retail background, I find this ridiculous. Other establishments have made errors and have fixed the situation before 3 weeks. We all make mistakes, but the way Annie and the rest of the staff handle customer service issues is terrible. Will not go back. If you go, take cash.

Very good Sushi and excellent waitstaff - very friendly and professional. However, the crowds can be overwhelming, so if you stop by on any given evening, be prepared to squeeze through packed rooms to arrive at your table or to nab a spot at the crowded bar. Back rooms are a little more quiet & have some nice ambience, but the smoke and noise level from the massive bar area makes this a better venue for an active not out, rather than if you're looking for a quiet, relaxing evening.

I went with my girlfriends here recently and we had a great time. The atmosphere is fun and hip however the sushi is not very good. I recently moved to Nashville from LA and the sushi does not compare. Also my other complaint is that we had reservations but still had to wait 45 minutes for a table. Be sure to check this place out for the bar and the scene but not the food and be prepared to wait.

I have been to Virago a few times and just love it! For those of us not usually in the "hip" crowd will feel hip finally! The atmosphere is fun, food is fab, and the DJ rocks! The only gripe is that it sometimes feels really dark in there--its hard to see your company if you sit right around the bar.
I would recommend this place for any sushi lover!

I recently went here for the first time with a group of friends & we love it- we go on a weekly basis now!! The atmosphere is amazing, very trendy. The sushi is wonderful. Try going on a Wednesday night...the sushi is half-price after 9 or 10 p.m. ( I can't remember which time is correct). Prepare to wait though....we've been several times now and had to wait 45 mins. to an 1 hr. even during the week.

This is definately an X-Generation Saloon. Great sushi (as good as Japan's), super Martini's, young-impressed with herself greeter, pretty decent waiter who was VERY busy & long, long, long waits for seating (take a pillow and cot). They couldn't care less about your reservation; should just say, "No reservations". But..... will follow my own advice and go again on Monday's when it's less crowded.

Service was great, at bar & at table. The sushi was as beautiful as it was tasty. Martini's delicious. Lots of pretty people dressed business to business casual. Trendy place for young to middle aged professionals. Each time I have been the bar area has been packed sitting & standing, but not so that you can't walk through. Have been there on a date for two and with a small group, and both times dined in the back dining room past the bar. It was completely enjoyable and appropriate on both occassions. Craving the sushi just writing about it!

Having moved from The City to TN, it's been a difficult adjustment -- places like Virago make this transition much easier. Virago has a hot crowd, amazing sushi, decent wine selection and a lounge-y decor. You almost forget you're in Nashville. It's only downside is the service which is good considering how busy they are but they're REALLY packed on weekends. Expect to wait 2-3 hours for a table on Fri/Sat nites.
