McKay used to be an awesome place to go and look for your favorite books, etc. HOWEVER, I went in there a few days ago and I was shocked to find out that on a lot of their paperbacks they had doubled their prices! They were charging more

I visited the Knoxville location on April 3rd 2014 around 7:00pm to sell them a Sony home theater receiver. They quoted me a price on the item. However, I had misplaced my ID and I was told by the employee to bring the item back and they would honor the quote once I found my misplaced ID. I placed the receiver back in my car and returned home where I found the misplaced ID. I returned to MKay's on Saturday April the 5th around 5:30pm and brought some books and the receiver which was still in my car never having been moved from two nights ago, back to sell. After I waited for nearly an hour and 15 minutes I was told that they would not take the receiver. So I explained to the employee that I was just in two days earlier and they had quoted me a price and was told to bring it back when I found my ID. So I ask the employee to find out why they rejected the receiver. I was then told it was in too poor shape. I said wait a minute it was in good enough shape two days ago the condition hasn't changed because its been in the front seat of my car untouched for two days. So I asked to speak to the manager. The employee goes to the guy a white blacked haired black bearded man with black glasses and begins to bring him to the counter. On the way to the counter I said to myself this is "bullcrap". The "so called manager" who refused to give a name asked me to leave the store first without offering to give me my money or trade for the books I took in. So I told him I am getting my trade credit for the books first and had he never heard of the expression the customer is always right? I was disrespected insulted and thrown out of the store by this man because he was on a power trip. Littlle did he know I had spent nearly $1,000.00 in blu-rays and other items with in the last three weeks as I was upgrading my home entertainment system at my house.I also probably annually spend easly another $500-$800 annually at that store. I think this employee the so called "manager" believes they do so much business that insulting one customer who is disatisfied won't effect the bottom line. Well in this case you no longer will be receiving anymore of my hard earned cash. If it were not for the 10 item per year return policy they have I would return all the merchandise I purchased in the last 30 days.

I love McKay! There is so much stuff there and you can get some really great things for cheap (books, cd's movies, records, video games-they have everything). It's big but not overwhelming when you get used to the lay out. The cashiers and greeters have always been very friendlly and helpful when I've asked questions. I've read several reveiws that said they were rude but really if you're nice to them they'll be nice back- common sense really- and if they seem a little tired or unenthusiastic, seriously give them a break, look at how many people they have to deal with a day- most of whom aren't exactly the nicest of customers!

McKays was better before it moved...now it's too BIG, not enough help and no place to park!! They give terrible prices on sales and only want you to trade...you do better selling online. There is a smaller version of used bokks/cd's/dvd's in Oak Ridge, shopping center next to K-Mart, not as big nor the selection at present, but name of it is Kay's Used Books/CD's/DVD's. They aren't as crowded, have staff to help you and are very Customer Service Oriented. I go there now....and sell my own stuff!! or order online....McKay's got too big for their britches, Rude and very disorganized, with no parking....they don't care anymore since they moved!! No more for me going there.....not worth the hassle.

First let me say that McKays Books WAS one of my favorite places.....that is until last Saturday. My family travel 2-2.5 hours to McKays from Kentucky. This past Saturday, when we got to McKay's, the Parking Lot was full, not to mention that there was absolutely no Handicap Parking available. Several customers were parking at the Pool store Next door. Seeing that there were 3 parking spaces on the side of the building, I parked there and put my handicap placard on the mirror. I also have a Handicap (HC) License Plate with the HC symbol and reads "Disabled Veteran".
After returning from the store w/ $70 worth of purchases, an Employee, Michelle, say's "You can't park here". I said "The parking lot is full", while pointing at my license plate. She then states " You can't park here and your car WILL be towed." I said I'm handicapped and I spend alot of money here, I'm not walking from the bottom of the parking lot. BTW, What's your name?" She says "Michelle and I'm going to get the Security Guard and you will be towed!" I said "Bring your boss back with you". In about 20 seconds, Drew shows up and says "Michelle says you wanted to see me, Is there a problem". I ste what has happen to Drew and he says "Well, you do have a placard so I guess it is okay this time". In the meantime, Chuck shows up and says abruptly says "What's the problem", giving me that long stare. I state "Oh it takes two of you?" Drew says, "Well this is my Boss. (Drew was a nice guy and had the situation under control) I said well okay, and tell Chuck the story. I tell him that we travel to McKays from Kentucky and spend alot of money there and if it's that big of a problem, then I won't be back. He says "That's your choice" while shrugging his shoulders. I said "Never Mind the fact that this is how you treat people that have served your country and been injured to protect you." I point at my license plate and say "What's that say?" Chuck just shrugs his shoulders. I say, "Well I'll contact the owners and won't be back". Chuck says "Whatever". I realize that I parked in an employee parking space. I also know that there were 3 other spaces empty there. It is plan to me that Michelle and Chuck have no respect for Our Servicemen and women...the people that stand watch so they can sleep at night. Some of these people, such as myself, are Handicapped/Disabled, protecting them. Needless to say, they no absolutely nothing about CUSTOMER SERVICE. With regards to the $3000/yr that we spend at McKays.....that money will spend just fine elsewhere.

First time there----a black woman was in the process and showed me what to do. She even helped because I had 2 filled to the top white bins of VHS tapes. I submitted and was given a number. I watched an older guy handling my tapes and he spent some time looking at the 14 tape WW II tapes by Walter Cronkite {which are collectables}{recently sold on EBAY for $24} so I thought they would bring at least something. In a short time my numberr came up {I was surprised if he went thru those 2 full bins in that amoutn of time} the helping lady was leaving but saw my number so went with me where to go to get the results. I was told $7.XX
Cash or $33.XX credit!!!!! I was shocked and I mean shocked.
All those tapes plus the WW II collection he spent time on plus 19 Disney collectables and $7. They returned about 6 tapes and they were scoffed up outside. I gave the black lady who was very nice and helpful the $33 credit and left. The $7 didn't even pay for the gas to/from there. No more----next time Goodwill short drive less hassle and more satisfaction

After fighting for a parking place I found the long lines, crying babies and jammed packed isles nerve racking. There are so many people looking for the bargain of their lives that the atmosphere is always in turmoil. This bargain basement swap-shop is not the best bargain book shop in town but it does have a large inventory with good turn over. The staff is quite quirky and brow beaten by the herd so don't expect much. Also....don't expect to get ANY money for your trade-in's; better to sell or trade them on line. This is just one of those places I just want to get in and out of as soon as possible...and then take a bath!

McKay Used Books & CDs has the charm of a Wal-Mart (no posters on the walls or hippie tchotchkes here) without the organization and low prices. Like Wal-Mart, you don't want to hang out and browse here - you want to get in, push past the screaming children, and get out.

The books are poorly organized - the genres are clearly marked, but the books are only roughly alphabetized. Mass-market paperbacks are stacked with spines horizontal, which made it difficult to pull one out. Mass-market paperbacks were $4-5 (another bookstore in town charges at least $2 less). Despite having such a large space, the shelves are tightly packed. They also have carts, which makes it even more difficult to move around the store. McKay's does have a large selection (including books, CDs, and DVDs), but the high prices, tight shelves, and sterile atmosphere kept us from browsing longer. There are better (and cheaper) options in Knoxville.

McKay's is a very good place to go too find things you want. But there's one thing that made me very very mad. I brought in over 25! PlayStation 2 games absolutely no scratches whatsoever, and I sold them too that retarded place "McKay's" and I got only $9.00! My brothers and me were in no mood for this bull crap. The only good thing was the trading offer which was about $20.00. They had no good games, books, posters, or Cd's for me too buy. They are not a good deal. Please if you are selling your games please go too EB games or somewhere else. Thank you to whoever read this.

This Bible may be called a Dickson or Nelson Bible. Do you have this bible in stock. I have looked everywhere and I thought that you may have a used one that is in good shape. I shopped at McKays for years when I lived in Georgia. I still shop there when I am in Ga and I miss shopping there. I shopped at the one in Chattanooga. sure wish there was one here in the Wyoming

This is one of my favorite places to look for affordable books and lots of other things. It was the first place recommended when we first moved here and I asked about a place to get or trade books. And I read a lot! Try them if you want an iteresting and fun place to shop.

You will not find a larger selection of used books, cd's, DVD's and videos anywhere in Knoxville. If you are looking for used paperbacks then this is the place for you. The prices are great. Just be warned the people who work here are UNIQUE!

When visiting my son, I always make an effort to visit McKays. They stock gently used books, cds, movies etc. I often trade back in books from my personal collection so I can then purchase others that I'm wanting to read. I am impressed with how many books they keep on stock. They have recently moved to a new location where they have more room but it is still very accessible from interstate.

McKay Used Book store is one of my favorite places! I love to get a good bargain on books. Many of the used books at McKay's look brand new and are very cheap. I am a teacher and I have furnished my classroom library out of the children's section at McKay's. This store has recently moved to a new location in Knoxville and has a much bigger selection in a bigger building.

We love to go to McKays used books and cds with the whole family. We trade in our books, games, movies, and cds, so we can then buy other media selections that we want. This is a good way to keep our love for books and new games satisfied without breaking our budget. They have a new building that makes it much easier to find what you are looking for. Great place!

This is the place for book lovers! I have never seen a used bookstore that compares to this. The children's section is HUGE. There's a great selection of award-winning children's books at a fraction of the original cost. Most books are still in superb condition. You need a lot of time to browse this store, but it's a pleasure. Love the new larger and more convenient location! The trade credit is awesome - just raid your house before you go for books, CD's, and movies that you don't want anymore.

This is our most fun place to visit when we travel through Knoxville. They take books, cds, dvds videos etc and give us trade credit so we can then buy other bookx etc that we want. We almost never have to use cash because we always take so much for trade. This place keeps us current on books and medai. Great place!

McKay's is one of my favorite places to buy books and DVD's. They have a huge selection and the prices are really low, especially on paperback books. The movies aren't arranged very well so it makes it hard to find something specific but it's understandable due to the great amount of items they receive every day. I try to make a trip at least once a month to see what they have in.

f you love books, you will be in paradise at McKay's. Their new warehouse is huge! There is an excellent children's book section and there is usually a good selection of cd's to choose from. There are so many books you'll need time to look around!

McKay Used Books has recently moved into a new location that truly matches the wonder that is McKay's. This book store has every type and catagory of book sold - if you are looking for it, they probably have it. You can also turn in your old books for credit to more books. McKay's also sells used movies, music and games.

PROS: great new location, huge selection, great prices
CONS:

McKays buys and sells used books, movies, and CDs. You can decide whether to receive "trade credit" or cash for your items. They are a great place to get rid of things you no longer need, and a great place to buy the latest books, movies, and CDs at a great price!

McKays has good prices and lots of books. They just moved to a new location on Papermill Drive that is huge. They also have DVDs, Video Games and the entire second floor is devoted to CDs!!!!

The staff at McKays are nice and knowledgeable. They are happy to help you. McKays is about as organized as used books can be. It is always good to ask if you don't see what you want - sometimes they have a whole section of Stephen King books verses him being in the Horror section.

Great place to spend a few hours any time.

McKay's has moved, but it's a much better spot and worth the short drive. The warehouse-style store is clean and bright, well-marked, but still just disoganized enough to make you look for that perfect find. Trades are still good. They new spot is, I think, on Papermill, near I-40. Call 'em for directions. It's worth it. They only thing they need now is coffee!

I love this place! You can exchange or sale books, CD's, DVD's and VHS tapes. But, what I like are the books. I buy them for my whole family. You can buy children's books there for .25 and other popular books for 1/2 what you can buy in the retail stores. The DVD's and VHS prices are okay. I get lost in this place for hours. If you like books, this is definitely a place to check out!
