Our daughter was in town - had not seen her since Christmas - so we celebrated with a special dinner at Sperry's. Wonderful meal and service. Though we had made a reservation for the dining room, we decided we'd rather eat in the lively

This place is really almost comically unbelievable! It is a caricature of the Good Old Boy southern system of pompous and condescending servers coupled with truly average yet temendously overpriced food.\r

We had a great time, There were four of us. The servers were attentive to our needs and wants. The wait for our reservation was a short wait. We sat down and had a wonderful dinner and conversation. The restaurant looked great. I was a little concerned about how the flood would affect the reopening. It was handled very well. It looked fantastic. Thanks for a great evening and great service for our friends who were from out of State. They too complimented every thing. The filets, were perfection, Twice baked potatoes Awesome as usual. Keep up the good work.

It had been a while since my last visit to the Belle Meade Sperry's. As soon as I entered I remembered why I loved going here. We were greeted by a friendly hostess that hated to tell us that since we didn't have a reservation, we would be waiting a while. However, she informed us that we could sit at the bar and eat right away if we would like. I'm not a fan of sitting at a bar and eating, but thought we could have a drink or two while waiting for a table in the main dining room. We took a seat at the bar and were acknowledged right away by the bartender, Hillary. I asked for a wine list, but also asked if there was one that she recommended. She had me try one and gosh it was just what I was looking! We sat there talking to Hillary and a few people around us and decided that since we were having such a great time at the bar we wanted to stay there and eat. Hillary walked us through the specials as she set up a setting at the bar, which I was totally impressed by. It was treatment I??ve only known to get at the main table!! The special sounded great, but I decided to go with what I used to get?the filet (medium rare) Oskar style and sweet potato fries. Then, one friend ordered the salmon with creamed spinach and the other ordered a filet with a twice baked potato. We were all eating off each other??s plates. Everything was done to perfection and SO yummy!!! We were completely stuffed, but we can never pass up dessert. We ordered two sticky toffees because a guy beside us at the bar said we had to try it?OH WOW!!! Hillary poured something over it and it just melts in your mouth?we called it ooey gooey heaven! It was meant that we were to stay at the bar?fabulous service from Hillary, fantastic food and wonderful crowd to hang out with (no wonder this restaurant is always packed when I drive by and completely crowded when we got there!!), such a wonderful time that we stayed til almost closing!!!! Thank you Sperry??s?we WILL be back more often :)

Cons: Tight parking, busy/crowded

Sperry's has a very old reputation in Nashville, but I think it may be time to hang up the spurs. I very much liked the idea of going to a classic 70's style steak house, with copious amounts of great meat and rich sauces and whatever else, but I'm afraid the food is terrible. I felt like I was eating at a restaurant featured on an episode of "Kitchen Nightmares". The salad bar is right in front of the cooking area, but instead of seeing a busy kitchen, all you see is a guy throwing stuff in the microwave and another guy slapping steaks on a grill. They microwave everything: soup, sides, anything that needs to be heated. For an appetizer I got the Calimari. 13.95 and the bits of calamari were not even fried correctly. They were soggy, and it was what I would call a half portion. Carraba's has better calimari that is properly fried to a crisp for cheaper.

The salad bar was OK, but hardly worth the 10.95 it costs on the menu. I should also mention that while this is a high end establishment, there were several little children running roughshod over the salad bar. They took an extremely long time, and one of the mothers forced one of her children to spit up something IN HER HAND, which she wiped on her plate, and then used that SAME HAND to get more stuff from the salad bar. Disgusting.

The steaks are aged and cooked properly, but my NY Strip was very gristly and lacked seasoning. Certainly not worth 27 dollars. I very much doubt that it was a prime cut of beef. I ended up asking for A1, which I never do with a quality steak.

The desserts were lackluster and severely overpriced. Avoid the sticky toffee pudding at ALL COSTS. It tasted like an overdone pancake soaked in very cheap maple syrup. I've had better desserts out of the frozen aisle, which is where I imagine this pudding came from.

Also, be mindful of who you're going to be eating around. The place was PACKED with the geriatric white crowd. They probably like the ambiance and can't taste the food so well. I did not see a single non-white face in the establishment.

Pros: Attentive service, old fashioned salad bar

Cons: Ridiculous pricing, steaks are lousy, they have 4 microwaves

.

I had swordfish for $26. The plate had the swordfish with no condiments or decorations with a few sprinkles of pepper on top! It made the white plate look extremely large and weird to me. I have been to many restaurants and this was like a joke to get fish like this. It was tasteless also. Very tasteless and I was very disappointed.

Too bad I can't publish my full review of this restaurant here. I have three times too many words than is allowed. This is another one of those ??first class? establishments in Nashville that no longer deserves its reputation, if it ever did. As you can tell from the other reviewers here, they are more impressed with the dcor, the service, the booze and/or the location, than any honest, educated, worldly critique of the fare served. I suspect that most of those reviewing here are younger than thirty and were brought up on McDonald??s and Pizza Hut. Or they are older, devoted patrons from the ??hood, and have had their palettes numbed year after year to the inexorable crashing of the Sperry standards like the proverbial frog in boiling water. I have lived in Nashville for a number of years and whenever I heard of this restaurant, it was always in tones of hushed, almost whispered worship, like a prayer or wishing upon a star.

My Italian friend, born and raised in Italy, and I ended up at this restaurant on Christmas. We had had a perfectly glorious mini repast at 1 808??s earlier (check out the reviews of this place. Genuinely superb!) earlier in the day but decided to see if all we??d heard about Sperry??s was true.

[The space where I had to edit out all the details about the food we ordered.]

We had no liquor and no dessert. I had a hot tea and my companion had only water. Our bill was almost $60. This is too shameful to endure. Somebody needs to fix Sperry's before it deserves its reputation again, if it ever did.

Have been in Nashville for 3 years, looking for a good, classic (not a chain) steak house. This place has been around 35 years, is busy, friendly, a little noisy, but the kind of place we've been looking for. Everyone doesn't wear blue jeans (a nashville peeve of mine). Done all the high priced chains, but like this place the most.
Bruce was our waiter and was very friendly, attentive and made our first dining experience first rate (ask for Bruce). Had the filet and twice-baked (as recommended) and the salad bar (first one I've seen in many years, but back in the 70s, everyone had them). Great wine list. It was a little crowded (due to Steeplechase), but that's a good sign of a popular restaurant.

Highly recommended!!

Pros: great food and service, wine list

Cons: parking a little tight, price may scare some

Too expensive for salmon and can find it at Wildwood or J Alexander for much less and get much more food. Sperrys only gives you one piece of salmon for around $22 and nothing else with it. Other places give you so much more and their salad bar is pitiful compared to a salad bar with many more choices. Actually Ruby Tuesdays salad bar is much better.

My wife and I double-dated here on Valentine's and thought the food and the service was wonderful that night. Steaks are definitely excellent and we had an overall great experience. It was a bit pricey but if you want to treat yourself to something good, I would definitely recommend it.

I go to Sperry's quite often for business meals, the food has contuined to be consistant and very good quality. Great place to entertain for business, and the wine selection is always plentiful. only draw back is the price of the wine by the glasses are alittle high.

My husband and I tried Sperry's for our third wedding anniversary on a Wednesday. We made reservations - but upon arrival, found that there were only 4 or 5 other tables occupied. We were asked at the door if we had a reservation - which was kind of funny.

Being our anniversary, we were looking for an atmosphere that was quaint and romantic...that is definitely not what Sperry's specializes in. The kitchen is open...and the cooks (probably because it was slow) were tapping out a tune with their tongs on the steel counter. Quite distracting.

Our server was good. He took his time with us - but that was a downfall in the drink department...as my glass was empty quite often.

The food was FABULOUS! Excellent steak - cooked to perfection. Great sides and the salad bar was a refreshing addition for an establishment like this. The Bananas Foster prepared tableside was amazing. It could have easily been shared between four people. The prices were moderate - but it was a good value for the quality.

Overall, Sperry's is a good choice if you are looking for premium steak without the predictability of a chain restaurant.

My wife and I had heard raving reviews about this restaurant and decided to try it. The food was average and over price the service needs improvment. Once served our steak the server neverd checked to see if our steak was cooked correctly or checked on us at all. We have ate at many 5 star restuarants and were very disappointed. We did not find this as romantic experenice as we had hoped for. The tables were too small and placed too close to one another. Flemings gets the nod in every catagory and the service is impeccable.

WHAT A TOP NOTCH ESTABLISHMENT. Priced atliitle high, but you can justify the cost for the freshness and quality of the food. I really wish there was a way to make dining room not so crowded, but like me, I guess folks just can 't stay away. I always order the trout almondine which is perfectly wonderful. Servers do great job and are "friendly" not stuffy. Keep it up....BY THE WAY, THE BANANAS FOSTER IS UNBELIEVABLE!

This is the best steakhouse we've been to since moving to the area last year. I've been to almost every fine dining establishment in Nashville, and I am an expert on steaks. I ordered the bone-in filet and made a special request to have is stuffed with bleu cheese. It was one of the best steaks I've ever had. My boyfriend enjoyed his swordfish steak as well. I also enjoyed the salad bar. The lights were dim, which I appreciated. We sat in the bar area, and our waiter was great. He was informative and polite. I would definitely bring out of town guests to this restaurant.

My family had a wonderful experience and a fine meal. We were a party of six with reservations on a Sunday evening and were seated promptly. The entire staff was attentive. Our waitress was charming, and demonstrated excellent knowledge of the menu. All of her suggestions were spot on with our tastes. We started with a sample platter of appetizers at her suggestion. There was something for everyone without filling up prematurely, including shrimp cocktail, crab cakes, and Mushrooms Sperry. I don't eat mushrooms, but everyone else enjoyed them. The shrimp cocktail was chilled and lovely. Best crab cakes I've ever had.

Next, we visited the salad bar. It's not overwhelming in size, but the selections were fresh and chilled. Because I couldn't make up my mind, I sampled a few of the dressings on the side. The delicate green goddess and savory roasted garlic were my favorites. I was also delighted to find pickled okra. It's one of those things that I sometimes crave but don't often see on a salad bar.

When our entres came, we sampled from each other's plates. I had the melt-in-your-mouth Halibut Oscar, which is served over tender young asparagus and topped with Hollandaise. Yum! Can't recommend that one highly enough. My daughter had Rainbow Trout Almondine. My son had Swordfish Steak. I sampled both and have to say they were both distinctive and awesome. I'll have a difficult choice next time...now that I know.;) There were a couple of off-menu specials, including a surf and turf with a small lobster tail, which Dad ate with the bleu cheese stuffed filet. One of our party had the salmon, and another had a special fish. All I heard were raves all around.

At the suggestion of our waitress, my daughter and I shared the toffee pudding for dessert. Wow! I hear the peppermint stick ice cream with chocolate sauce is something special, too. Prices were on par with The Bound'ry, Antonio's, and most fine dining in the area that I've tried.

I have eaten at your lovely establishment and was wondering if there was ever a thought of branching out? I own a love commercial property built in the 1900's that has 4 fireplaces and lots of character and thought I'd ask you would be interested in the Mt Juliet Area. We desperately need a specialty restaurant and that is what I feel you offer. Please let me know. I called your restaurant and ask this question and they suggested I send you this email. I am not trying to commercialize this area. We truly need your type of restaurant in our location. I appreciate your time. Brenda White

We reside across the border and try to patronize Sperry's for our anniversary each April. My husband and I on short notice were able to dine here last evening, and we were not dressed the part. Jeans was our attire and I did not feel we were second class citizens among all the suites. Sperry?s was extremely busy and we had a bit of a wait to place our order. Our only disappointment was the Bananas Foster could not be prepared at our table for we were seated in a small space. I even offered to move to the bar! Sadly, it was packed as well.
While in the area and if time permits, take a drive around the magnificent homes and property in Belle Meade. This in my opinion is class at it?s best.

Sperry's Restaurant has been in business in Belle Meade since 1974. It Is an independent family owned and operated business with a unique English Tudor atmosphere that can't be found anywhere else. Sperry's warm and comfortable atmosphere has three stone fireplaces and loads of beautiful stained glass plus a myriad of unique decorations collected over the years. The second location in Cool Springs is a duplicate of the original with the exception of multiple private dining rooms. The large copper salad bar is fresh and inviting, and not overstocked with too many items.

The menu features a wide variety of seafood including favorites like the Halibut Oscar and Seared Ahi Tuna. Steak selections include slow-roasted Prime Rib and the best-selling Prince Williams Blue-cheese Stuffed Filet, so named because of the famous guests visit to Sperry's in August of 2005. The beef is top choice and cooked traditionally on an open grill and the portions are just the right size. One can actually order a steak with a side and eat the whole thing, so you don't feel like you are paying for food for four! The wine list is not too big and fairly priced with multiple selections by the glass.

Other selections include Rack-of-Lamb Dijon, Alaskan King Crab Legs, and Deep Fried Lobster. For an appetizer, choose either Mushrooms Sperry, Escargot or the Smoked Salmon Dip. For dessert, you can make it a night with the Brandy Alexander Pie or Bananas Foster Flamed tableside. Don't forget to try a Cafe' Sperry's!!

Sperry's is the place to go if you don't want to go to another Steakhouse chain in Nashville. You won't be disappointed.

Pros: Unlike any other restaurant in Nashville

Cons: Crowded, need reservations

This was not at all what I expected after hearing all of the hype. The steaks were good, but not great.

After hearing the rave reviews about Sperrys, I decided to see for myself what all the hype was about. I suppose I went in with some very high expectations after being of thrilled with the likes of Ruths Chris and Flemings. The only thing that lacks in comparison to these establishments is the steak itself. In my opinion this is not the area you want to come up short in. My steak was cooked a perfect medium rare, but the flavor and quality of the meat just wasnt up to par with other Nashville establishments. HOWEVERthe evening was far from a total loss with delicious soups, a plentiful salad bar, delicious sides and a wine list that had nothing but bargains. I would HIGHLY recommend Sperrys for those who want to have a casual good meal, but might not want the stuffiness or prices of Nashvilles finer establishments.

We love Sperry's. It's upscale but very unassuming. The prices are fair and the service is excellent!!! The Snowball is one of my all-time favorite desserts!!

Sperry's is my favorite restaurant in Nashville. It is warm, comfortable and friendly, and NOT a chain. The Prince William Blue-cheese stuffed filet is my favorite. Mushrooms sperry and escargot are classics. Bananas Foster flamed tableside is my special occasion treat. The sevice is very friendly and the Halibut Oscar is my husbands favorite. Sperry's is where we take all of our out of town guests. The English Steakhouse atmosphere is very original. General manager Jim Boggs is great too!

Wanted to make a 5:30 reservation for Wednesday, all was booked until 8:30, we came in anyway. The bar was full, the empty tables had reserved signs. I was told 1st come 1st serve. Heading to the ladies room I see empty tables. I asked the man at the doorway about it, he was nice, but seemed at a loss for words when I questioned the reserved signs and why I was told everything was booked. He said hed do what he could. We got a table next to the salad bar, I wasn't going to be picky at this point. What I don't understand is: the tables that were empty upon arrival, remained empty and still empty when we left. The food was good, the waiter was attentive. I guess you have to be a VIP to make reservations or sit at an empty table of your choice?

I will NEVER eat there again. I was treated with contempt and disrespect. I may not be a retired doctor but I would not come if I couldn't pay. Our waitress treated us like we were dirt under her feet. She rolled her eyes at me and turned her back at least twice. Twenty minutes after asking our waitress, I had to ask another waiter to bring us some bread. He was very kind and brought it right to us, our waitress never apologized. We had to wait over an hour for food and when it was brought, it was cold. I told the manager about the problems. He said they were busy, turned and walked away without a single apology. Since the waitress thought I was too poor to leave a good tip I put 50 cents in her hand, turned and gave the bread guy $20.

I can be assured of a great meal everytime I go. I can also be assured that I will run into friends. Sperry`s has a warm and inviting atmoshpere with a "cheers" sort of vibe... even if by myself I always feel comfortabe ..the food is wonderful and I love the sald bar..great home made dressings... fairly priced wine list and some of the best fries in town...to the reviewer who said Sperrys was decorated country western...did your guide dog tell you that? It`s English pub with stained glass , nautical theme and almost everything in the place was hand made by the late Houston Thomas, founder Sperry`s and collector of all the wonderful art and quirky antiques that adorn the walls. Comfort food for me ..a glass red wine, salad with the blue cheese vinaigrette, bacon wrapped fillet , fries and asparagus with hollandaise...my favorite thing for dinner anywhere!

My wife and I love Sperry's. It is so comfortable and the food and service are unbeatable. While we go often I would recommend it as a first time experience as they will really make you feel at home and take care of you.

Something on the menu for everyone in the party.

The best for quality experience and a value.

Sperry's... A place full of memories. I can not tell you what a wonderful place that Sperry's is. The best Blue-cheese Steak that I have ever had...not to mention the Flaming Bananas Foster Desert that was to die for. Mostly, I love the cosy and romanic place to have a after dinner drink by the fireplace. I can not say enough great things about the people that work there and about the cliental that eats there. A wonderful memory that dinner was and the dinners to come in the future. Keep up the great work, Sperry's

I was a little surprised that this place has a salad bar that you must attend to yourself. Other than that, our food was great and Jamie, our waiter, was wonderful. We got a lot of food for our money, and we, as out of towners, would recommend this place to our friends.

The restaurant had a gorgeous atmosphere, but I was a little disappointed with the food. The appetizers were plain awful. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms and they had no taste to them. I was expected to have a salad brought to the table, but there was a salad bar which I think is tacky. The best thing about the experience was the steak. I had the prime rib, which was out of this world. I would definitely go back for the steak, but the rest of the experience just isn't worth it.

i don't understand what is supposed to be so great about this place. i have been twice now, and found it mediocre both times. the crab legs taste wonderful but will kill you getting into them.. even outback opens the shells for you- come on guys, get with it! service is not very good. granted, it was crowded last night, but we had to send two of our orders back because something was wrong & the server seemed annoyed both times. i'd much rather order a salad than construct my own from a so-so bar. may go one more time to try a steak.

Everything about this place is great. I've been eating here since it opened and although I've moved out of town, keep coming back for special occassions. The bar is very cozy and comfortable, especially when the fireplace is lit and the food quality is excellent. The salad bar allows everyone to have a salad made the way he or she likes it.
