I'm from Chicago, land of foodies but we didn't have an Angelo's. The building is very unassuming but it's what's inside that counts, the freshest ingredients and great recipes. Best in middle TN

My wife has been talking about this place forever. It is down the road from her work and they eat there often. I have been thinking "what's the big deal". She brought a pizza home tonight for dinner. Now I know what pizza is supposed to

They have stayed true to what made them a great Italian restaurant in the first place; homemade meatballs, freshly shredded cheese, freshly prepared dough, hand-prepared toppings, and excellent traditional Italian dishes you would have never thought could come from a pizza place. A++

This is hands down the best pizza in Middle TN. If you want a great pizza, Angelo's is definitely the place to go. Their prices are well worth the quality of food that our friends from the NYC area ave brought to us. Being from upstate NY, I know what good pizza is, and Angelo's definitely brings the taste. Also, their calzones are top notch.

I used to love going to Picnic Pizza but the last time I went back, it was very dirty in the resturant. I didn't mind it too much since I was getting my food to go. The service was also slow, but here's the kicker...The owner was talking to a friend of his who didn't seem to be an employee and before the guy started to leave, he must have went to the bahroom. When he came back, I saw him making a to-go box. The owner let his friend put his bare hand in the cheese container. I was absolutely morbid!! This was highly unacceptable and I will never go back. I hate it but there is no telling what else has been done.

I think angelo's picnic pizza is a great place to go with the family. They make the pizzas fresh and they have really good service. Since I have been eating there the family that owns the restaurant have gotten to know our family. We love their food and the people our great. You're crazy if you think otherwise.

I think being from NYC and of Sicilian heritage, entitles me to make an intelligent commentary on this restaurant: It is simply great. The hand kneaded dough is first rate which affects all the pizzas and sandwiches. The pastas are always cooked correctly; the veal is prime quality; and everything else on the menu is authentically Italian. Having said that, I always feel welcomed and they make every attempt to provide the best service, even when their excellent buffet is being served which is daily. Overall I have to give Angelo and Nick an A+ for effort and food quality. I have to also mention that their pricing is definitely as good as it gets in Nashville.

I am from Chicago and have lived in Nashville for 8 months; so far the best pizza is Chicago Style on Nolensville Pike and DaVinci's on Hayes (near West End). I heard that Angelo's won the best of Nashville citysearch award so I went there, but first previewed their menu online. The pizza sauce tasted good and the cheese was not greasy but the crust was very blah, kind of tough and the price was $3.00 - $5.00 higher than what is on their internet menu! The lady casually said "oh, uh, yeah, I guess he forgot to change that!" I asked to speak to a manager as with that big of a difference I think it is a ploy and he hasn't changed it since at least TWO increases ago! I said I will take a printed menu for the future but would expect them to honor their internet price as that is in writing and they should keep up with it. They refused. I don't like doing business with bait and switch tactics so I will not be back.

I found Angelo's using the Urban spoon app on my iPhone and I wasn't disappointed. I had the spaghetti with meat sauce, and my friend had an Italian sub. Both were delicious, and large enough to please any appetite. We are going to go back and try the pizza.

I've been a faithful customer of Angelo's for the last 10 years. I'm sad to say that tonight's visit was my last. Ever since Angelo retired the food is not the same. There is a whole new kitchen crew and the quality of the food has gone downhill. The last 4 times I've been there, it's been getting worse and worse. My salad tonight was wilted and tasted like it had been soaking in oil all day. I told the waitress of my displeasure with the salad, and she didn't even offer to take it off of the bill. I informed Angelo's wife when I paying the bill and she didn't even offer to take it off of the bill.

My pizza tonight was terrible too. There were too many veggies on it and it was watery, therfore the crust was soggy. I ordered feta cheese on it and it was not even melted!!

I've given them the benefit of the doubt over my last four visits, hoping they were just having a bad night. Apparently it is not getting any better.

Goodbye Angelo!! It's as if I've lost an old friend!!!

This is to everyone who read Nashvillian660's post. I have eaten pizza all over the US especially New York and Chicago. I go to Sal's on Stewart's Ferry Pike, which is good with a nice decor. But, Geez!
Your post sounds like a vendetta. In fact, the food at Angelo's is quite good, especially the Eggplant Parm.
The lunch buffet offers a nice selection at a great price. However, the service staff needs improvement in being courteous, though I am mainly only talk about female cashiers and not the pizza makers, who are VERY friendly. GREAT VALUE....GOOD FOOD. (PS. Sal's is good too...as well as the pizza joint in the arcade downtown....voted BEST in '08).

Attention people!!!
do you all know who opened the PICNIC PIZZA ???? Picnic pizza was opened BY Sal , who now owens the SAL'S PIZZA AND REstaurant on stewarts FErry. I remember those days when Sammy was working over at Picnic pizza, i used to eat his pizza almost everyday. Unfortunately, since Sammy left that place , somebody with the name Angelo took over picnic pizza.I think this dude does not know how to make pizza. All they do just fight, argue, and talk.. I do not eat over there anymore. Everything looks so dirty , disorganized, and unhealthy. I would not recommend to go to that place and eat. it is not worth it.
They talk bad about every other pizzerias, why do not you guys clean up your mess.....
I think Angelo spends a lot of time on this city search writing about his own pizza shop.hahahahahahahahaahahaha. Angelo let other people talk about your place hahahahahaha, I can not stand your foood... sorry.

After reading numerous recommendations, my wife and I ventured this evening to Angelo's for some alone time from our 4 girls. Overall, we thought the staff was 4 stars and the food, 2. We also thought the overall value, pricewise, was good.

The White Pizza and Pepperoni calzone were underseasoned (mostly the crusts) and we had ricotta overload by the time we were done. Their "garlic" bread appeared to be just pizza dough strips without any seasoning whatsoever. It was served with a tomato sauce for dipping, but again, the sauce seemed to have been poured out of a Hunt's can. Just a little basil, anyone? Please? The pizza crust was a bit floppy in addition to tasting very plain. OK, I think you get the message.

The service, however, was much better. We felt very welcomed. Their timing did break down a little after we requested our check as their 2 servers seemed to get in the weeds with the few tables that were present on a somewhat quiet Saturday night.

My wife and I pondered returning to try some different pizza flavors to give them another shot, but in the end decided that the crust, sauce, and ricotta dissatisfiers would probably remain a constant. Although we tend to favor indy spots, our next pizza venture will bring us to the NYPD Pizza place in Mount Juliet, in the Providence mall area.

Pros: Hospitable staff made the lacking food palatable

Maybe our expectations were too high after reading some of the reviews. I'm a pizza fan and my wife likes a really good pizza.

There was only one waitress, but only two tables occupied during our Tuesday night visit. I was surprised that it took her so long to check on us. When we ordered, I was disappointed to learn neither beer or wine is available, despite the menu and the advertisements.

We ordered the double crust supreme pizza. It took 30 minutes. The flavor was good, the crust was perfect, but all the toppings were clumped together in the middle of the pizza, leaving alot of crust and cheese.

I had to track down the waitress to get a box so we could pay and leave.

Basically a good pizza joint, but minus the beer list, long wait and quality control issues and I would rate it higher. I did notice alot of takeout business while we were there, but I'm not sure I would pay for it vs Pizza Hut or Papa John's.

I travel all over Tennessee for business and I got to say, i stop in at Angelos twice a week. The food is GREAT! My business is a food critic. I have ate at many Pizza Parlors to decide which is the best and I have to give it to Angelo. Joey's in brentwood is ok, they have bad attitudes, Sals is now owned by russian people and there not so hot. Pizza Perfect is too busy and not worth the wait, Pie in the Sky tastes like Cardboard, Mafiaosas is decent, but not authentic. I highly recommend Angelos! Nick, Sara, and Angelo and there staff arte great. They have good additudes, the restuarant is always clean, and the food is delicious, I reccommend the Cadillac Pizza ( Double Crust) It is loaded with all the meats. I finally met Nicks look a like brother Joe and I got to say, Pizza is this family's business, and there darn good at it! They need to open a store in Symrna where i live! Thank God for ANGELOS!

My wife and I moved to town in June of 07 and had angelos recommended to us by the guy who installed our cable. We gave it a try and thought the pizza was awesome. I would recommend getting it double crust or getting their deep-dish style pizza. I've been all over the world and had pizza in just about every state. I would definitly say that Angelos is closer to the top than the bottom of pizza joints i've enjoyed over the years. Give it a try.

Pros: great taste, quick service, good service, great desserts (try the cheesecake).

Cons: location, lack of parking (not a lot to complain about)

Being from NY and experiencing some of the best pizza in the world on Long Island, Brooklyn and the Bronx, I was hoping for something remotely close based on all of the great reviews I read. I ordered an extra large pie fresh from the oven with 1/2 extra cheese and 1/2 pepperoni. It was just OK. There is nothing special about the crust, cheese or the sauce. Joey's House of Pizza in Brentwood and Samboli's in Spring Hill are better if you are trying to compare to "real" NY pizza. On a positive note, the owners and other employees were extremely helpful and friendly.

Family and I have been eating there for as long as it has been at that location, but we DO NOT like the fact that now we have to order up front and be yelled at from the counter to come get our food. Is it now a fast food place like everyone else on Murfreesboro Rd? We liked that in the past to come in and have a seat and have table service, That is what a restaurant is! Now it has become like Captain D'S . WE will not be back, and will tell all of our friends. Which are a lot. It is too bad that you changed things. Especially when we saw our favorite sever standing there and asked why she was not waiting on tables. Go back to table service! And we might be back to enjoy our pizza. Being yelled at to come get our food is, well all I can say is that I will be having pizza some where else. Want to add some more info. Some friends of mine eat @ Angleo's over the weekend, and told me that they were NOT pleased with the changes. Had two small children with them and had a hard time going back to the counter to get their food, and will never go back. If they wanted counter service they will go to Captain D's or Arby's. But won't be back to Picnic Pizza. It is a shame that you all changed things. And seeing tables that are dirty, they said it looked like a pig pen.

Angelo's was a little out of the way, but after reading some reviews I wanted to check it out. My title says it all. If you want the best pizza in Nashville, I believe this is it.
Run by husband and wife, He makes the pizza while she engages customers.. He is from Sicily and she is from Palermo, so if you love Thai Chicken or BBQ Pizza, then stick to one of the other over priced competitors. Nice people, great New York style pizza.

These guys make you feel at home from the time you walk in till the time you waddle out. I've been there a ton of times and never been disappointed. Great family too!!!!!

Pros: Everything

Cons: none

.

I was born and raised just outside NYC (north NJ), and one of the things I missed dearly when I first came down here was a good pizza...a spectacular, authentic NY pizza. Picnic Pizza is the long-lost friend that re-connects me with my childhood eats. It truly is unlike any other pizza in town. Picnic Pizza is NOT just about pizza though...finding a full complement of italian food that is simply delicious is difficult. Simply...you need to eat here. My personal favorite is the manicotti, but trust me when I tell you that there is not a bad choice on their menu. The ham calzone is also a favorite of mine, and whatever you want in it, you just tell them.

As great as their food is, there is so much more to enjoying a trip to Picnic Pizza. My favorite reason for patroning Picnic Pizza is supporting the spirit of kind and wonderful people who do great business. For the last 6+ years, Angelo and Sara have given me the pleasure of enjoying any and every opportunity to eat at their restaurant. In the last couple years, Sara has passed her share of the workload to their son, Nick, and he has done a great job in carrying that torch. I can't tell you how many times Linda has waited on me when I have dined there, but she has always done her job magnificently. Bring your children, bring your grandparents, bring your appetite!!

To Angelo, Sara, Nick...everyone who has contributed to what makes your restaurant so special, I say thanks to each of you for all that you do. It is always my pleasure to patron you...to invest in you...because you care, and you do what you do with a passion. Your food is incredible and it is my wish that with every passing day, someone new gets the pleasure of coming to that same realization.

Pros: Special people, Great food!!!

Cons: There isn't ONE!!

I live WAY outside Nashville and like to have pizza's made, but not cooked. Most restaurants are NOT accommodating. However my first visit to Angelo's was no problem. I placed a very large order and while waiting I was given a huge piece of pizza to try and was immediately hooked. The only thing that I would do differently is specify a large order of pepperoncini?s on the side instead of the tiny cup that I received. My guests were ecstatic by what Angelo concocted.

And...he suggested freezing the pizza's. That may be a great option!

We come from a town called the "pizza capital of the world", and they don't have anything back home thats this good! If you are tired of carboard chain style pizza you need to try Angelo's. Their lunch buffet is always fresh, and there are pizza specials the begining of the week. I love their calzones and lasagna. It's a family run restaurant, thats very welcoming. Real Italian food, by real Italians.

Since the opening of Angelo's Picnic Pizza, this has been one of my favorite restaurants, but no longer. Now there's no table service; you have to order at the counter and then try to listen for them to yell out your name. The food's still okay, but the restaurant is too loud and unpleasant to be enjoyable. Now it's just another takeout pizza place and there are a few dozen of them in Nashville--and most of them make home deliveries, which Picnic Pizza does not! Plus, getting in and out of their parking lot is crazy now that people are just trying to "run in" the front door and pick up an order. How I miss the good ole' days when our favorite server greeted us by name and started filling our drink orders before we ever got seated (she knew us that well!) I'm afraid they've ruined a really wonderful little family restaurant.

When you walk in you are always greeted and if you are a regular you can bet Angelo or Nick will talk to you as they work preparing their delicious New York style pizza. The lunch buffet is always great and when I'm on my way home and need something to eat these guys are always at the top of my list.

Pros: Friendly mom and pop resteraunt with great food

Cons: parking can be a hassle and the dining room gets packed for the lunch buffet

.

By far the best pizza. Period. They have a great buffet with many items to choose from other than pizza. It is a small location so you better get there early for the lunch buffet. Prices are reasonable and the cooks are all Italian. This is the real deal.

I'm from NY so I know pizza, and this is the best I've had since I moved here 6 years ago. The buffet was great, had 5 different pizzas, pasta w/ shrimp, spaghetti & meatballs, salad and for dessert: cannolis. Won't go anywhere else from now on.

Pros: Best pizza buffet anywhere

Cons: On a busy corner, traffic can be a pain.

Even though the building is small and can get lost next to it's larger neighbors, the food is really good and the staff very nice. Everything's homemade, so it has that really fresh flavor to it. It is very small and can get busy, so you may want to go a little early or come in a little later. Very good!

When is driving and hour and a half worth for pizza? When it's Angelos!!! I personally own a business had a customer tell me about the place it was 7 o'clock at night I looked at my business partner and said "let's go check the place out" we got directions from the laptop while in the car, got lost on Bell Rd... Called Sarah a couple of times, and finally sat down to the best pizza I have ever had. But it's not only about that, the family here are great... Laughs are many, conversations are great, memories are made... The main reason, The food is excellent.

I was so happy to find a place that really had NYC style pizza and Italian food! This place is 8 minutes from my home and I get there as often as possible. Picnic Pizza has real Italians making great pizzas with great toppings, fabulous hot heroes, great entrees and fantastic fat calzones (I love the spinach!). There is no way a franchise pizza place can top this!

Yes, it's a hole-in-the-wall. No, it's not fancy. But go for the food and you'll be pleasantly surprised. The people, Italian by-way-of Brooklyn, are charming and friendly, the atmosphere inviting. Their homemade sauce is so dang good, I could drink the stuff for breakfast. All the pizzas I've had - the house special, the veggie, the chicken pesto . . . all are divine, I mean INCREDIBLY good. The calzones are equally delicious. The only thing that I didn't absolutely love was the too-vinegary Italian dressing on the salad. But with pizza this good, I'll wear the lettuce on my head. Thank you thank you thank you Angelo, Sarah, and family for making my mouth so happy!

My family and I are from NY and this is the closest pizza to New York's pizza we have ever tasted in TN. We were very impressed and we love going there because they are a very busy place but they still know you by your first name. We go there atleast once a week and they know exactly what we want.

Thanks for letting us speak out
Thank you Picnic for being the best in Tennessee

Real Pizza in Nashville! It's a rarity, but this place has is right! If you hit the lunch buffet or come in the evening, you will not be disappointed. No new-age pinapple tofu pizza here, just real New York pizza with great crust, plenty of garlic and cheese along with generous toppings. Also, they have a menu of Italian specialties that rival most Italian restaurants in town and are much more reasonable!

Forget Pizza Hut and Papa John's if you want real pizza come to Picnic!

I also really enjoy the buffet on Sunday evenings! It is a nice time to take the family!

Picnic Pizza is a taste of NYC. When you go to Picnic, you have that feeling of being in a pizzaria in Manhattan or Brooklyn or even Jersey. The service is awesome, the attitudes are friendly. Simply the best that Nashville has to offer.

Fantastic food (we've tried everything from the AWESOME pizza to the subs to the pasta, and have never been dissapointed) and wonderful staff (hello Sara, Angelo, Linda and everyone else!) make this a great place to eat! My husband and i have been customers for years, and we always recommend it to friends. They've all raved about it as well! Try the lunch buffet - great value, and the food is awesome and plentiful. The calamari is a dream come true! We never even order pizzza from those chains anymore - only Picnic Pizza's pies will do! DO YOURSELF A FAVOR... TRY THIS NEAT LITTLE ITALIAN "JOINT" SOON! I just saw that they got a very high rating from the health department on the TV - so what are you waiting for?!?

Everytime I walk in the front door Angelo greets me by name. Pretty impressive considering my schedule only permits me to eat there a couple times a month. I also watch as he greets many other people by name when they walk in. Everyone working there is nice and they really do have the best pizza I have ever had. I am not from New York but I do have friends who are and they have told me that it is the real deal. I think they hated to admit it though. Mondays they have an extra large one topping for under $8.95...

This place offers a variety of excellent AUTHENTIC Italian food! The people wait on you and talk to you like you were at Aunt Rosa's house! And the owners are right there onsight taking your orders and everything. When i was in there they even took the time to show a child how to make a pizza and let her make her own and keep it! Now how is that for good family fun. Places like this are few and far between these days. Their food and their attitudes are so great that they don't have to mask it with hotsy totsy linens and fancy china, the place truly sells itself! Cold Beer Warm Pizza and Great people!
