We have lived in Fayette County for 3 years, and El Nopal continues to be one of our favorite restaurants, and THE favorite Mexican restaurant in Fayette County (there are several). I give it 4 stars because no one is perfect (the other reviewer obviously experienced a bad day). We have eaten there on at least 50 occasions, and I can say that we have only had one experience that was less than wonderful.
First, it is a family style restaurant. It is very popular with the locals, and is usually full of patrons, although we always seem to be seated immediately. The order turnaround time, especially at lunch, is incredibly speedy, and the food has always been served hot. They have the best carne asadas; their variety of chimichangas are excellent; and I always enjoy my personal favorite, their chili rellenos.
If you want good quality Mexican food at very modest prices in a family dining atmosphere with quick, friendly service, El Nopal will be one of your favorite places to eat, as it is ours. And no, they did not pay me to write this.

I am going to start this review by saying that I am a bit of a mexican food snob. I will also say that this review is based on visits during a time when El Nopal was the only mexican restaurant in our little town and usually rather busy.

The last time we went and took my father in law for dinner the restaurant was packed and we had to wait about 10 minutes for a table for 4 (3 adults and a toddler). We were seated, salsa (TOO HOT!) was brought to the table and our drink orders were taken- one of us had to wait extra long for our sodas because it was forgotten. Then we placed our orders. When the food came my husband's order was COLD! I don't mean sat too long and sorta warm, I mean COLD! He promptly sent it back, but that meant he was sitting there watching the rest of us eat because if we waited, our food would be cold too. His food came well after we were done eating and ended up having to be take out.

Our food was acceptable for a speedy with beans type of mexican food restaurant... not great but okay. The price was reasonable and typical of this type of restaurant.

Thankfully we now have a much better mexican restaurant in town. I will say that if we did not have another place I would not return to El Nopal- I would drive to Cordova or Bartlett instead.

PROS: inexpensive
CONS: food is average at best, slow service
