There are some bad reviews on here, but they don't apply any more. Now Sam and Zoe's has lots of tasty and healthy sandwiches, salads, wraps, etc., and the coffee is excellent! There's not much near 100 Oaks to choose from, and no other

Everything went well, I ordered my coffee and started drinking it. A decent cup of Joe but simply luck warm. Now I just don't like luck warm coffee. May be I should have said that I wanted it to be hot?
Anyhow I gently asked the lady at the counter if she had a microwave oven. She said Yes and then ROLLED her eyes like I was asking for the moon. Now here is the deal, this is a service oriented business and customers can be a pain but asking to heat up a cup of coffee for 20 seconds in a microwave is not too much to ask for. So here it is Zoe, or Same or whatever your name: YOU WILL NEVER SEE ME IN YOUR COFFEE SHOP AGAIN. You have just lost another customer.

I visit frequently and I love this coffee shop. Have you tried their breakfast burritos? They are amazing. The smoothies are made with real fruit and are great. The frozen coffee drinks rock over Star Bucks. The bagels are the best around. I try to support locally owned businesses and this place is great. The atmosphere is laid back even a little incense from time to time.

Jeff's Special is my favorite sandwich there. Give this place a try if you haven't been there in a while. You will love it.

Ok, there are some terrible reviews on here. But have any of you gone back. There is a new owner, Carma, who is trying to bring back some of what everyone loved and keep what everyone loves now. Give us a try again. If you don't see the difference and don't like your food it is on me. I am the new owner. We make everything fresh, use organic as much as possible, no preservatives etc...

I was a regular there for years and it was great, but I've decided I've given this place enough chances since the change in ownership, and I'm not planning on going back.
In the past, it was a nearby spot that I knew I could count on for quality coffee and espresso, knowledgeable and friendly staff, and a great sandwich, but all that has drastically changed over the past year.
First, most of the employees now seem to not really care about customers. They rarely even say "Hello". Actually, it seems like it's always someone new behind the counter, too. Only a couple of them are friendly, and the owner, I believe, has been the rudest of all. Every time I went there before this changeover, my lattes were perfect, and there was no surprise considering how many award-winning baristas they used to have. Now, they only occasionally get a drink right, but most of the time, the shots are no good and the milk is flat. Plus, they don't have a very broad variety of brewed coffee to choose from anymore and they usually can't tell me anything about it. Second, the food is mediocre and just not as fresh. It doesn't surprise me though looking around at lunch and seeing less than half the restaurant full, and the place is small. I'm also pretty sure the pepperoni on a pizza bagel I got once, was rancid. I couldn't finish it and felt awful later.
No one that works there now even seems to know what's in the items they're serving, either. They don't even put to-go sandwiches in bags anymore, they just loosely wrap them, so if you get chips and a drink, have fun juggling on your way out.
In addition, I have to say I also miss the local art on the walls, huge refrigerators NOT on the nice porch, the awesome tofu sandwich, and all the extra muffins, house-made treats, and chocolate bars.
Sorry, Sam & Zoe's, it was good while it lasted.

I went to S&Z's recently to get my all time fave, the TLT deluxe, and enjoy a lunch hour reading the Scene and drinking fling tea. Unfortunately, they don't have the TLT deluxe and was told that it was because of the new ownership. Why change something that was obviously loved? The place overall does not have the same feel and I am sad to say I have not been back since.

Cons: Missing the TLT Deluxe, place doesn't have the same coziness

Went back to show my friend the veggie burger that was so good the one time I had it. Unfortunately it was a pre-bought patty and felt like a waste of time even dining there. Also was bummed the pasta salad was different and sorta dry.

Liked some of the new things inside the place but really must fix the food back to the standards it was before I would return.

Sam & Zoe's has long been my favorite coffee spot in town - they had great brews, great food, and the staff were always friendly and fun. Since the new management has taken over I have been in four times - trying to 'make' myself like all the changes because I hated to lose my favorite spot. Not only did they axe my absolute favorite menu items - the TLT deluxe which was the best tofu sandwich I have ever eaten, but they also got rid of the to-die-for chocolate cake. The staff now are so rude...I was waiting to order a cup of coffee for almost ten minutes on my last visit and did not even get an apology. I miss the quaint mismatched chairs and local artists handiwork on the walls. Instead of quaint local hang-out, the place reminds me of a Subway - with potato chip bar and a stark sterile environment. Ugh, not only that, but when I went this past Saturday they were blaring 50's tunes... I mean, there is only so much one can take.
I also miss being able to choose from several different blends of coffee - now what they have is what you get...and what you get it just not worth the stop. Heaven forbid you want a refill - the 'super' staff have to get it for you and they might just bite your arm off first...that is if they ever get around to serving you.
I am all for change if it is good change...none of the changes I have observed here are. I am sad to say it, but this long-time customer is not going back. Portland Brew, here I come.

I had been to Sam and Zoe's in the past but I wasn't pleased. I was recently informed that it's under new ownership so I popped in today and fell in love with the place! The service is so wonderful! The girls working were fun and funny and very welcoming. I am sure to be back to visit more and more often!!! I would absolutely recommend this place!!

Pros: Area, Service, Price, Comfort

Cons: Not the best

I didn't know the place was under new ownership until I overheard someone say as much. I figured the menu would be the same (hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it), but I was surprised to find the old menu missing. They did make me an overpriced hot cereal, which was good, and the coffee was, well, not very memorable. The cooler was gone and the convenient coffee "island" had vanished. The place had a stark, empty feeling to it. I miss the old Sam & Zoe's. Thankfully the great porch is still there.

My coworkers and I have been loyal Sam & Zoe's customers for many years. That, unfortunately, is about to come to an end. We've noticed and commented positively on S&Z's changing decor but, as far as I'm concerned, that's the only positive change. Last week, without consulting a menu (I mean, why look at a menu when the same delicious food has been available for years?) I ordered my favorite sandwich of all time, the TLT deluxe, only to be told it's no longer available. After I recovered from that shock and took a look at the new menu, I found a few other disturbing changes, like the absence of blue corn chips and tomatillo salsa. I asked the guy behind the counter about the change in TLT availability and he said it's the biggest complaint they get. If the previous poster is correct and the goal is to drive away their old clientele, the new owners are going about it exactly the right way. I fail to see the reason people like us need to be driven away--as far as I know, we're relatively socially acceptable and definitely spent lots of money there in the past. But I wish you good luck with your new Vanderbilt clientele, Sam & Zoe's--we'll miss you!

I was happy when I arrived at Sam and Zoe's this morning. When I got my small cup of Joe, I gave the lady at counter a tip even though all she did for me was give me an empty paper cup. I was just glad the air conditioning was working.

I asked if she was excited that Vanderbilt was moving next door and she told me she would be happy to get a new class of customers. That comment sounded strange to me because I have been in retail and I have always appreciated customers with money. I had no idea that I was one of those "undesirables"

The coffee was very good. I sat on the deck and even though part of the kitchen was out on the deck, the view was of another restaurant's parking lot, and there was a bag of greasy trash hanging from a tree near the dumpster, I still enjoyed about 4 oz's of my 12 oz coffee.

I drink coffee slowly and stopped by the refill station to warm up. I went to the cashier, who coincidently was the same person hoping for a better class of customer and told her I wished to pay 25 cents because I didn't get a refill I just got a warm up. She rolled her eyes at me and took 50 cents. She said that was just the way it is. I took a sip of the coffee as I drove around the block and realized that it just didn't taste so good anymore. I took it back to the restaurant and after giving it back to her, I explained that I could get no pleasure from that coffee because of the poor treatment she gave me.

When she smiled and wished me a good day, I realized that I was one of those customers she doesn't want anymore. Maybe I am not tall enough, or athletic enough, or young enough, but I am not the right class for them anymore.

My cost for 4 oz's of good coffee? $2.50

This has always been one of my favorite places, but new owners recently took over and the vibe as well as the food, etc. seems to be changing-- and not necessarily for the better.
Rather than doing a slow transition to find out what is popular and why, the owners have immediately started making changes to items on the menu and to things (such as muffins, etc.) that they get from other vendors, without getting to know the existing customers and what they like.
They have turned off the wifi during certain times, and the drive thru is now only for phoned-in orders for much of the day.
There are reasons this cafe has become so popular, but if much of that is to be changed, then why still call it "Sam & Zoe's"? I've heard that the new owners are from Star Bagel, so it would seem to follow to change the name if it's going to be modeled after that business.
They'll probably develop a new customer base, BUT
for those of us long time fans, a big loss...
RIP, Sam & Zoe's.

Sam & Zoe's is a friendly little coffee shop with great food, service, and ambience. We also love that you can bring your dog and sit on the porch! :) The coffee, fruit tea, curry chicken salad sandwich, butternut squash soup, and black bean chili are all highly recommended!

This is the best little sandwich shop in Nashville. I love to support local spots because they are so unique. Sam and Zoe's has wonderful coffee, soups, sandwiches, etc. Everything I have ever ordered from there has been so good! I love their turkey sandwich and their tortilla soup is so good! Great place and always look forward to going back!

Pros: food is always delicious

This place is a close second behind Fido for the best coffee shop in town. This is a fun relaxed place with good outdoor seating. The Tijuana Wrap is the best burrito in town.

Pros: Relaxed, great coffee, amazing burrito (Better than the stuff at Baja)

Cons: Outdoor seating looks out on a parking lot, parking can be a huge pain at lunch

I recently moved to Nashville and was lucky to discover Sam and Zoe's. The coffee is amazing and I like that they are supporting local coffee brewers such as Bongo Java and especially, Drew's Brews (his coffee is so amazing). I have had to use the drive thru a few times due to the lack of parking and had to wait BUT in all fairness, Sam and Zoe's is not a fast food restaurant so for those complaining about the wait I would say that reveals more about their impatience rather than the service rendered. Personally, I prefer quality over speed so I don't mind the wait. In addition, I have found the staff to be very pleasant and authentic. I don't want the corporate smile and the "have a nice day" so again I am thankful for the alternative to Starbucks. Keep doing what you're doing because you're doing GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!

We discovered Sam and Zoe's by accident, since we were visiting a wonderful store in that neighborhood called the Curious Heart Emporium. We were on vacation and therefore I can't comment on repeat experiences, but I was very surprised at the negative comments. In contrast, we found the staff to be very pleasant and efficient. The coffee was very good, too - and the atmosphere was fun. It was late morning, so I'm not sure how that compares to more rushed times of the day - but regardless, we certainly recommend Sam and Zoe's.

I don't know what that last guy is talking about. I have been a customer of S & Z's for almost four years. The staff is actually very educated... a couple people with master's degrees. Granted, it's a small place, and has gotten much busier over the last few years, but they always work well with what they have. I've never waited no more than five minutes for a Sandwich to go. Don't you want your eggs cooked? Everything is fresh and made to order, not pre-made. It sounds like this last guy is just personally attacking the employee's and is a very angry person. Compared to other places in town they serve up a fine cup of coffee with good service. I highly recommend this place!

Food is not bad but be prepared to WAIT.
Unfortunately this is the only bagel place close to my work and every time I go there I feel like it's staffed with a bunch of 30 something?s that could not make it in the McDonald industry or, mommy and daddy paid for their college and after that party ended they couldn?t face the real world but took the yellow brick road to Sam & Zoe?s. They are usually bitter, role their eyes at the customers and express the attitude. If you crave a good bagel, go to the drive thru, listen to a long song like In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, lay back and stare at the drive thru tip jar.

i have had good and bad experiences at this place. the atmosphere and coffee are both good but the customer service is definately lacking. the employees seem more into hanging out with each other than doing their jobs. i have had good food on occasion there but other times it looks and tastes like it was thrown together with no thought and shoved into a microwave. what disturbs me the most is how dirty behind the counter and kitchen appear. if you want good coffee then i reccomend that you drive a little further and go to fido or bongo east.

I have no clue what some of these reviewers are talking about. I have been going to Sam and Zoe's almost every day for five years and have always recieved great service and food. I have seen lots of people too busy on their cell phones to talk to the person behind the counter like anything less than a dog. As for quality of coffee, my experience is that most people who talk like they know what setting the "grind" should be on know less about coffee than George Bush knows about weapons of mass distruction!

As for quality of coffee, my experience is that most people who talk like they know what setting the "grind" should be on know less about coffee than George Bush knows about weapons of mass distruction!

Pros: friendly, quality food, great service

Cons: parking, closes too early, inconsiderate custome

This hidden spot is the best coffee shop in Nashville. The food is high quality and very good. They have the best Veggie Burger I have ever eaten. The service is always quick and pleasurable. Me and my friends love sitting out on the porch on the comfortable couch.

Pros: Quality of Food, Great Service, Never Crowded

I only stop here when I need some reasonably good coffee. Unfortuately, when I need caffeine, I want it NOW! There are always people behind the counter, but why does it take so long for them to acknowledge me? Once they do notice me, the service is slow and not very cheerful. I've also had the misfortune of hearing, "sorry, we're out of coffee, just a few minutes and we'll brew more." This is not what a customer deserves when he needs a hot drink in the morning on the way to work. I have visited this place for the last time.

Pros: coffee fairly good

Cons: inattentive service

OK coffee, but just like most of the "cooler" hangouts in Nashvegas expect that "I'm just a rock star/alterna star in waiting, so I must be cooler than you attitude" Stood there being looked at for a good 5 minutes before the Jack Osborne looking sod asked me what I wanted. Please people, I've been to LA, NY and recieved less 'tude from wannabe musicians! Starbucks may be to "mainstream trendy" but their coffee is better and cheaper.

I've been eating lunch at Sam & Zoe's for about two months now. They have the best turkey sandwich & the ham sandwich is great too. Try the pasta as a side or the kettle chips. They're good too.

Im new to the area and was looking for a charactered coffeeshop (like the ones back home), and sam & zoes came HIGHLY reccommended. although it didnt have those distinct qualities i was necessarily looking for, the service was commendable and the atmosphere is something im looking forward to getting used to. its really quite a drag that its a bit further than i wanted to drive, but bygod its worth every extra second. the coffee is from bongo java (which may or may not incline people to go), but tastes much better than the same brews ive had at bongo. they must put some kind of magic in the water at sam & zoes - and it has definitely charmed me.

Some of the most tasty and interesting food in Nashville. The owner knows his customers personally and will customize orders. Completely supportive to the military, firefighters, and police, giving them a 50% discount. A true jewel.
