You know, I liked this bookstore, or at least thought it was ok, until I stumbled upon these reviews. The things that are being said by those with truthful, actual experiences - the ones that are not so flattering to BookManBookWoman, are all issues that I, too, have found at the bookstore, so I can ""second that emotion"" when it comes to the disappointing side of the store. Those issues, alone, would not make me necessarily quit going to the store. What HAS made me vow to never step foot inside that store again is the way they have - very badly - attempted to manipulate their ratings here. I'm sorry; I just despise that kind of dishonesty and will never do business with them again. I mean, their attempt here was not even well done, it is embarrassing. Obviously, the person who wrote all of the over-the-top positive reviews is really Internet ignorant and clearly doesn't know what he/she is doing. Do they REALLY think that people are THAT stupid? Do they not realize that the fact that they were ALL written on the same date, the fact that they ALL mention the ""double-shelved"" books, which is NOT something four different people - in a row and on the same day - would EVER think to include in a review, are HUGE tips that these reviews are bogus. Also, mentioning in each review that the owners, (sometimes mentioning their names - Saralee and Larry), are available to help you find a book is completely a lie and totally misleading. Larry has a law practice and is NOT in the store to help ANYONE find a book. Also, everything written in the positive reviews are words ONLY an employee of the store would write. In this case, I very much suspect that Saralee OR Larry wrote this dribble, and to pass them off as true reviews under different names is COMPLETELY dishonest and misleading. I will never do business with these people again. I value honesty above almost everything else. Oh, one other thing: another tip-off that these reviews are bogus? The references to the friendly atmosphere. Their ""atmosphere"" is a stern, middle-aged, blond-haired woman who has a permanent scowl on her face and might be the most unfriendly bookstore employee ever. She scares me. Oh, and another thing: how many reviewers, who ALL reviewed on May 17, would even KNOW there are 150,000 books in that store, much less include it in their review. These people are REALLY horrible at posting reviews. I also suspect the October post of that year was from the same person.

I was disappointed that I did not receive a greeting at any time while I was in the store even though I encountered an employee on several occasions. This is not what I would expect from a family-owned business. The store was also very disorganized. I am a collector of used and rare books, so I have visited many of these types of stores. The stores that will get my business are the ones that demonstrate that they value my business. This store was a big disappointment.

Whiling away a whole Sunday afternoon is very easy when I visit my favorite used bookstore, Bookman Bookwoman, located in Nashville's lively and hip university area. I can spend hours in the local history aisle alone. The store's selection of hard-to-find and collectable volumes by notable writers of local interest is amazing, and if you don't see what you're looking for, owners Saralee and Larry will gladly locate a copy for you. I've found the service to be unfailingly accommodating and pleasant. Some stacks are double shelved, adding to the fun of the hunt. I highly recommend dropping in Bookman Bookwoman to poke around in the stacks the next time you're in Hillsboro Village.

This quaint store has both old and current titles. If you are looking for a fun way to spend some time then browse the stacks. They have not only older, used books, but current titles. Many leather bound books if that is your fancy. Pay for a hard back what you'd pay for a new paperback. What's wrong with this picture??? Nothing. The owners are willing to help with titles, authors, topics. You may not know every book in the store, but they do. Great place to take out of town guests while strolling in ""The Village"". Friends from other cities always remember their visit to Bookman...and want to go back.

I have always found Bookman / Bookwoman to be a delight: the full shelves (with books sometimes double-shelved) simply means that they are likely to have exactly what I am looking for, while the boxes of books still to be unpacked indicate the owners' desire to acquire still more books. What could be better? It's a welcoming, friendly atmosphere for both the casual reader and the serious bibliophile. The sense of Nashville as a community is a lovely bit of lagniappe, too--so much better than the impersonal surroundings of retail book stores.

There is something for everyone in the HUGE selection of used books at Bookman/Bookwoman. The best stocked sections include general fiction, mysteries, science fiction, history, art, and biographies. If you love to browse you could spend days combing through the double shelved volumes that cram every inch of shelf-space. If that sounds overwhelming just ask for what you want. The staff has a computer-like ability to find it amongst the 150,000 books in the store. If they don't have it they will provide a free search to locate a copy for you. The owner also does free appraisals one day a week and they are always buying books. I love to find a good book here, then go across the street to Fido and drink a latte while I start to read it.

Going into Bookman is a sad event for me. The strength of the store is the paperback fiction section - easily best in town ifor SF and mystery. However, there are many grossly overpriced (average) hardcovers cluttering up the shelves. Perhaps they were nice copies once, but a steep price combined with wear and tear makes these unsellable. The overpriced detritus leads to gross shelf crowding, boxes on the floor and an extremely unpleasant atmosphere. Should be a much better store this close to Vanderbilt - poor organization and dead overpriced stock smacks of laziness. UPDATE - Note the four above reviews, three on the same day, all one-offs. This is obvious rating manipulation. Isn't it strange that the ""Best Store in Nashville"" has only straw defenders?

Pros: strong fiction, open sunday

Cons: Fake reviews, clutter/smell, parking

This quaint store is situated right on 21st ave and has a quaintness that bookstores seem to be losing nowadays. Lots of books to pick from, and doesn't seem to be too overpriced! Great palce to start for those hard to find books!

PROS: LOTS of choices, great cookbooks
CONS: hard to find parking

This place is packed full of books, so if you enjoy digging for treasure, you'll love it. There are books stacked upon books for you to dig through, and the booksellers working there can tell you if they have something in stock. Somehow they know every book in there. If, however, you are wanting to make money by selling your collection, you will receive pennies for your books here. Sell them elsewhere, then come here to replenish your reading materials. If you are just wanting to make space on your bookshelf, then by all means bring in your volumes to trade here.

PROS: Selection
CONS: Don't sell your books here if you want money

Book Man is a very cluttered store. You can barely walk through because the aisles are so narrow and the books are stacked in the bookcases from floor to ceiling. It is very difficult to find what you need, although the staff is helpful if you ask them to help you locate a book. And chances are, they do have what you are looking for since they have a fantastic selection. The place smells very musty like. . .old books.

I had looked everywhere for this one particular book. Most places had never even heard of it. I walked in expecting the same reaction. WRONG They had it and at a very reasonable price. I will definetly start my next book search here.

You can barely walk in this place because there are so many books. The aisles are very narrow, but they have a huge selection of used books. You can find just about anything you are looking for and they are very helpful in helping you locate your book. The books are categorized, but hard to sift through, so ask for help.

Walking into Bookman is like walking into a librarian's attic, with used books stacked two levels deep on most shelves, and narrow aisles leading back into dark alcoves. There is something for everyone here, even though you may have to squeeze through some tight places to reach your favorite subject. If you've been spending lots of time in large, "big box" stores, this is your antidote.
