Service was great. Loved the server. Although the food was well seasoned. I had the ribs and brisket combo, the ribs were not fall off the bone tender. In fact they were chewey and dry. The brisket was also dry. Enjoyed the mustard

Memphis has amazing barbecue!! There are tons of great places to try! The Rendezvous is definitely unique among all of them--the ambience, the family-friendly atmosphere, but most of all for the food! Definitely try the beef brisket or the greek salad--delicious!

Their ribs are extremely dried and hard. It??s NOT tasty at all? I had a very high expectation before I go there, but it turned out to be a big disappointment?

Had seen this on several Food Channel shows and was very excited to go. The rub on the ribs was way too salty to enjoy and the waiters were rude. Will not suggest as a stop to anyone.

I used to live in Memphis and at least once a week we ate at the Rendezvous. Best ribs I have ever eaten, great atmosphere and just all round best place to be. I enjoyed living in Memphis but the thing I miss the most is the Rendezvous and their ribs. If ever there, it is the place to eat. I order them since we live many miles from there now. That is how good they are!!!

Love this place! Go as you are. No need to dress up...that's my kind of place!! Got seated, fed & out in less than an hour on a Friday night! Been ordering their spices & sauce for years. Found out my Dad and Mr. Vergos used to work together in the early 60's in Memphis. Made going there that more special. SO HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO GO EAT THERE!!! Atmosphere is great, service is awesome and love the fact that I can order all their food online & have it delivered in less than 24 hours!! Rendezvous IS A MUST if you're in Memphis!!!

Ask for "JUICY RIBS" whiners! This place is awesome, atmosphere - smokey romantic and rockin
Some folks complain about anything. I lived in Memphis 20 years and ALWAYS try to get down those steps to those waiters that have worked there for years - hard working I might add. Tell that waiter "I want those ribs juicy and tender..so juicy you have to put a piece of bread under the ribs" if you dont care for the dry rub. Ray J..Wally Reed..Mick Jag..miss those good times! Embrace this place.....everyone I have ever sent loves it. You can always get more side cups..just ask! Its all good. God Bless those waiters! and the Vergos family!....and those guys that work at the Peabody Hotel......some of the hardest working folks I have ever known. God Bless You all.

i was visiting Memphis and was taken to this restaurant by relatives. i had a taste for some good ribs and food and i wasn't disappointed. but i was overwhelmed by the service i received. I was waiting to enter the eating area and i saw the long row of steps and realized that i could not enter. I turned and told my wife that my knee replacement surgury would not allow me to navigate those stairs. a passing employee overheard me and told me that he would get an elevator key to take me downstairs. then proceeded to take me to a waiting room and cut on a tv for me to watch whlie i waited on him!! the service was excellent with little wait and the food was the best i have had. i will return every chance that i get!

I honestly think this is some of the best bbq in Tennessee, in the southeast, Heck, in America for that matter. If you're a babrecue aficionado at all, you 'll love this place. Best dry rubs, ever, period. The cool atmosphere only adds to the mystique and the legend, but be prepared because you are going to have to wait...and wait.

This place was a great dissappointment. We moved here a year ago and I make way better ribs at home. They were dry, small and chewy. But the service was absolutely forrific! Not a pleasant dining experience at all!

The Rendezvous is the place that made me never want wet ribs again. They set the standard for dry rub ribs for me. That was 17 years ago. I took my wife there after telling her for so long that yes Corky's is great but the Rendezvous is the epitomy of dry rub ribs. We went there last night and I was dissapointed as was my wife. I ordered a full order of ribs thinking I would take some of it back to the hotel. My wife did the same. The ribs were dry (not just dry rub) and a full order (rak- user guidlines won't let me spell it correctly)didn't even fill me up or my wife. Either they had a bad night or they have gone way downhill. Based on ther other reviews, they have taken a turn for the worse. So now Corky's is our number one pick.

Horrible! I should have known this would be a poor experience from the start, when the gruff person seating guest said, "Only 1?" upon seeing I was on my own, and seated me next to the station where workers were slamming dirty dishes. I asked to move and only after I held my ground did she agree. I ordered the ribs dinner. The ribs were not just dry rub - the meat was dry and tough. They were barely warm and, despite the thick layer of spices layered on top of them after they were cooked, they were bland. The waiter never came to my table to ask how my meal was, and I had trouble flagging him down. When I told him about the tough and dry meat, he could not care less. He did not offer to adjust the bill. So, I paid, walked a few blocks and happily had superb ribs at Blues City Cafe at Beale & 2nd Sts. - just go there!

I was working in Memphis for a few months and everyone said I had to try out Rendezvous. I normally don't believe hype, but it definitely lived up to everything that had been said. The dry rubbed ribs were unlike any ribs I have ever experienced. Incredibly flavorful, delightfully tender, and with a side of coleslaw that was phenomenal. I went there multiple times while I was there, and if you are in Memphis for any length of time, definitely try it out!

Rendezvous is the best barbeque that can be found in the Memphis area. My favorite thing to order is the barbeque nachos. The barbeque has the best flavor combining sweet and spicy along with the cheese is phenomenal!

The Rendezvous is a placeholder in Memphis historical cuisine, and is the prime destination for people who want real Memphis-style ribs.

This place has been around for ages, and so has the wait staff! The waiters are basically old men, who aren't afraid to speak their mind. It's more amusing than insulting.

But the ribs are great, they serve it up quickly, and the price is right.

Great place to bring out-of-town visitors.

I see now why Corky's is rated #1 BBQ in Memphis.
The Rendezvous is the most over rated eatery my wife and I have ever set foot into. The restaurant was a filthy hole...a layer of grease and dust cover nearly every object in the place, and the so called "world famous ribs" were dry, hard as a rock and tasted like plain old Mrs. Dash seasoning from the local store.
I asked for a knife, but all utensils are cheap, flimsy plastic, so I opted to use my Swiss army knife.
The side dishes, of which they have only two, were brought to us in containers the size of small dixie cup.
We could not wait to get out of there and get some good BBQ at any number of the bars on Beale St.
I must admit, there are people waiting in the street to get into the Rendezvous, but none of them were locals...they knew better...the Rendezvous is a tourist trap. My advice is to walk in check it out, maybe go upstairs for a couple drinks to soak up the nostalgia, just don't order any food.

Pros: upstairs waiting area nice...nostalgic, historically accurate ornate look

Cons: filthy restaurant with lousy food

Food is definitely the focus here. The BBQ is great and large portions. We had the house specialty pork ribs which were tasty, falling off the bone. Don't expect much on sides, small dixie cups of coleslaw (too vinegary) and beans and some white bread. We didn't try their sausage and cheese appetizer which they're known for but we saw other orders and wish we had.

Don't expect to bring a date here, just good food.

Grew up in Memphis and used to eat here often. Liked other places better, Jim Neely's, Payne's, John Will's, Corky's, but always respected Charlie Vergos and what he built. Ate there tonight first time in 22 years. The ribs were not great quality; very stringy, heavy bone, poorly trimmed. I'd have rather had ribs at Chilis. Long wait, spotty service, warm beer. Sorry to say they need to get back to what made them great.

They have excellent dry rub ribs and darn good bbq nachos. As long as you don't mind the wait to get in, you won't have to wait long to get your food. The servers are friendly, but fast. Yes they will try to get each table turned over quickly, but with a place this popular.....that's what you'd expect. Price a little bit much for the amout of food, but it's not always about quantity. You can skip the sausage and cheese plate there and make it at home....they sell the seasoning at most of the grocery stores there.

I can't believe some of these poor ratings. I live in Arkansas but lived in Memphis 20 years. I'm currently doing a photography book on Memphis so have been returning often. I have eaten at the Rendezvous 3 or 4 times this year. I have cooked in Memphis in May, tasted the World's Champion Ribs that won Memphis in May in about 1993 [Apple City BBQ]... It is simply not true, these reviews. "the Rendezvous" has the Best Ribs in any Restaurant anywhere.

Romantic: I would certainly say so. The atmosphere is very appealing. The staff is the friendliest anywhere. I make a habit of asking my waiter how long he has worked there. Usually 20-30 years. Why? Because they make good tips and enjoy the atmosphere.

I took one of my first dates to the Rendezvous in about 1962. I think it dates to 1948. The restaurant has burned twice and is in a second location. The last fire was a very long time ago. I do remember the ribs being dry years ago. Now, they aren't what I would call dry. There is a light but not overpowering sauce applied in the kitchen.

I think their ribs are excellent and I never have ordered anything else. There must be a staff of 50 and always a line to get in. They ship Ribs world wide. I never go late but I understand that you often have to wait in long lines.. This restaurant is probably the most famous one in Memphis and deserves it's reputation.

Soooo disappointed. It's just living off its name. I go to BBQ in every town I visit, and I thought this was supposed to be a good representative of the legendary Memphis BBQ scene. It must just stay open by preying on BBQ naive tourists... it wasn't awful but definitely was not good. Add to that the high price and it becomes an terrible experience. My wife and I live near Memphis, and have gone three times over the course of 18 months, hoping we were just getting unlucky. But no, this place just does not have it. The icing on the cake is that the poor food is brought to you with arrogant service.

By the way, the dry vs. wet ribs thing is just a smokescreen to make apologies for the place. I like both kinds of BBQ, and I've had better dry ribs even at places I just thought were average. I'm reviewing this place as a dry rib place, I went to it for dry BBQ, and it simply does not measure up.

I was disappointed with the Rendezvous. Not so much because it wasn't good but because I had been told it was great...and it wasn't.

Rendezvous is that place you take family visiting Memphis for the first time. Or if you're shopping downtown. But it's not a destination restaurant.

The ribs are ribs and they have their unique decor, history, etc. However there was nothing about my experience that I would remember to recommend. If you really want great ribs this isn't necessarily the best place.

Lastly, it's a bit overpriced. $17.95 for a full order of ribs is pretty steep when you can get better around town for $12-14. I think Rendezvous can command $17 due to their location and tie in with the city's history, tourism, etc.

So while I liked the food and I was having a fun time with family, I've had far greater experiences - and better ribs - elsewhere.

I have eaten at Rendezvous over a dozen times. Never had any trouble parking (garage is right across the alley). I have always had nothing but great service. The ribs are simply the best. I have tried ribs in numerous other restaurants throughout the U.S. and none of them come close to matching up with Rendezvous. They are so good that when I can't make the 4 hour drive I simply order them at their website. I will keep going back until they close their doors. At which point, I will have to purchase the place to keep it open.

It's obvious that there seems to be an effort to prop up the reputation of this dump on this website and other travel forums. Everyone has an opinion and that's a good thing, but it seems to me that there is a covert effort to 'STUFF THE BALLOT BOX' to suggest that the quality of food served at The Rendevous 'deserves' some kind of local or national 'respect' when none is really due.

This place may have a glossy reputation, but the food served does not come close to being an industry (BBQ) leader in the culinary sense. In short it's BAD, The service is contemtable. The location is in an Alley. The parking is BAD. Downtown is realtively dangerous.

This place has HAD its 'heyday', and no amount of self-serving, allegedly 'objective reviews' can not mask the fact that the food, in total, fails and is not worth the time, the effort, and certainly not the money. The place has no value, other than a relic and tourist trap.

I had never heard of the rendezvous until 3 years ago! I have lived in memphis all of my life! I would prefer rendezvous ribs, sausage and cheese plate, bbq chicken, bbq shrimp, beans, coleslaw, cheese, pickles, ect. over anyone in memphis. Yes, it may be a little pricey, but it is damn worth it! The people that talk about the ribs being so horrible, that is b/c they obviously dont know what a dry rub rib is! Most place that serve wet ribs (example: corky's), yeah the meat is a little more tender but it is not as good. At the rendezvous, they cook very slowly in a pit and then are dipped in vinegar and covered in there famous rubbed, so of course they tend to be a little bit tougher, but the are covered with meat on each bone. They are by far, the most amazing ribs i have ever had. They also have amazing dry rub/seasoning... whatever you want to call it and the sauce is superb. They are a little high in price but work every penny! The outside may not look so nice, but they have 3 or 4 levels to that place, and it is huge and amazing. The waiters are a little rough around the edges... i will gave you that, but they put up with a lot of stuff and they bust their butts for you, so chances are if you get over your... stuck up selves think your better than them and you dont treat them like freaking slaves, they are going to have fun and be friendly and joke with you! Little Robert is the best of them all i think! He enjoys having fun with his customers! So next time, know what your talking about before you just go thinking things about food that arent neccesarily true but to an extent they have a reason to be kind of tough! Give reviews to help people out, not to show that you think your a tough or something! To you viewers that want to know if it is worth it or not, everyone has an opinion, and everyone likes different things, but i think you should go try it whether you are a visitor to memphis or not. It is an experience thhat you will be happy you took a chance on!

Pros: everything, except maybe the parking

Cons: maybe the parking gets a little hectic sometimes!

How this dump on CitySearch gets a '9.3' rating is beyond rationality for anyone with functional, unburnt off tastebuds. Sorry, but there's a reason why informed visitors and patrons say bad things about this place. Among them are:

1) The food/ribs taste like overcooked, salted and marinated, corrugated craft paper

2) The lamb tastes like mouton from old Australian slaughter house

3) The cheese on the cheese plate taste like it came from a Snackables lunch, with the sausage that Johnsonville would be ashamed of

4) The service from the longtime 'yowshuh' staff is appallingly indifferent and ineffective

and that's just for starters

Ok, I'm not sure what the people that post negative things about this place was expecting, but my visit lived up to all the good things that I was told this place would be. The dry rub ribs had tender meat to them, the only slightly chewy part was the charred outside of the meat. It is my understanding that this is how authentic dry rub ribs are suppose to be. They had wonderful flavor and the BBQ sauces that were provided made a nice complement to the ribs. Ditto to those of you that recommended the cheese and sausage plate. We went a step further and ordered what I believed was called the Rendevous Platter that also has some ham, salami, pickles, pepperocinis. The sides of mustard coleslaw and baked beans were great as well. As for the paper plates, yes it's true, they do serve everything on paper plates. But the last time I checked, you don't eat paper plates do you? So what do you care?! By the way, we also had their Greek salad which is large enough for 2-3 people to share. I'm not exactly sure how a Greek salad fits into the menu, but it was a nice addition to the heaviness of the other food items. Wash this all down with the pitchers of beer they serve and your in for some good eats! There was a total of 6 of us in the party and the total bill with 5 pitchers of beer was $240. I should also mention that this also included two extra slabs of ribs because we liked them so much. (big eaters should consider ordering 3 slabs for every two people) I personally consider this a fair price for how stuffed we all were when we left. Last but not least, the service is a little rough around the edges, but this is part of the experiance in going. Don't expect them to "baby" you through dinner. You are not at some stuffy "pretty food" restaurant here!

For a place that came so highly recommended, I was very disappointed. The ribs were very tough- felt like I was eating 'jerky'. The sides- beans and slaw- were fine.

It's been around forever. My parents ate there. The food is ok. Ribs are covered in the dry rub which is tasty but it's not spectacular. I'll go for lunch because it's downtown but won't make a special trip. The waitstaff is excellent and most have been there for 15 years or more which is unheard of. The food is out quickly and warm. Still, nothing to rave about.

My family has talked about this resturant for years but I had never been with them. We live 2 hours away and I could not imagine that it would be worth the drive, especially since I don't like dry ribs. However, I decided to go with them one night. We waited 30 minutes but after all, there were 20 of us. But the ribs were on the table within 10 minutes of ordering. They fall off the bone and are so tender. And for the person who says the onlly two choices are wet and dry, that is crazy. One, they don't seerve wet at all. Two, they have pulled pork and shrimp that I have also tried and are wonderful but don't compare to the ribs. We go up several times a year and we have never been disappointed

Yes the ribs are wonderful, and the waiters are superb, but what no one tells you about are the wonderful barbecued shrimp. You have to call a day in advance to put in your order because they simmer for the whole day, and are so wonderfully merrinated when you get them you might just fall out of your chair. My family drives from southern Illinois to Memphis (4-5 hours) just to get a taste of these phenominal shrimp. The waiters come from a time when everything was yes sir no sir, and are some of the nicest in the city. Ever since my first trip to the Rendezvous my family has had the same waiter, Alfred. I can not think of enough posetive things to say about the Rendezvous, it is just an overall wonderfull expierience.

If you come to the Rendezvous for a great time with friends and great food - especially dry ribs - you won't be disappointed. If you don't like dry ribs, don't get them! They are definitely different but most people love them. And as for some of these other reviews that complain about the alley, waiters, and atmosphere... they're probably snooty people who can't have a good time anyway. We always love our trips to the Rendezvous and would recommend it to any of our friends (at least those who love fun and great food!).

Not sure why this restaurant is listed under West Memphis, AR but in any case, The Rendezvous is 1 of my sentimental faves in Memphis. The best dry ribs ever, character waiters & atmosphere all contribute to making The Rendezvous a Memphis tradition & a must-do for 1st time visitors. Thumbs up!

Great dry ribs (which is the only kind they have), get a sausage and cheese plate and a pitcher. Most folks get a full order, don't try anything fancy, a full order is what they do. Service is great and atmosphere is wonderful. If you are going downtown Memphis, this is the place to start. Folks who are used to wet ribs or expect it to be a "fancy" restaurant will often not like it. Oh, and the waiters have generally been there for 20 years, so save the tired pc mis-characterizations.

I think the Rendezvous is wonderful. If you don't like dry rub, eat something else off of the menu besides ribs. The place is great! Q should be spicey and not sweet. Rendezvous gets it right every time.

I Have had serveral people say"If you go to Memphis, you have to go to Rendezvous" Me and my friend went and it was the worst meal I had in Memphis. I really thought it would be better. A lot of hype on this place and it was not cheap either. Now I am just a tourist who visits Memphis twice a year for holiday weekends but I would suggest Blues City on Beale. They had wonderful ribs, fall off the bone ribs, great flavor. Made me go back. And I am not a big rib person
thanks

Two foods I love in Memphis are fried pickles and the Randez-Vous(pork ribs). I can hardly wait until the next time I'm in Memphis to savour that little southern delicacy cooked to perfection, pork ribs. Yeah, yeah the waitors do have an attitude, hell most of them have been there for at least 20 years so they have a right to have some attitude. The Randez-vous is a must when in Memphis, I just wish they served fried pickles.

"This great rib joint is nestled in Downtown Memphis with the best dry rub ribs & appetiziers in the US. The atmosphere is great and your waited on hand and foot. These waiters never have to write anything down. They can remember whole table orders like it nothing. If your ever in Memphis or never been this place is a must stop and should be listed in the citysearch Best Of Best nationally.
