I just recently started trading and buying at McKay's. They have WONDERFUL trade in prices (cash or store credit) and their merchandise prices over all are dirt cheap (especially compared to Grumpie's in Hixson). They bought books from me that I couldn't sell back to my school. Children's books are dirt cheap and their family DVD's are practically a steal. I highly recommend this place. I go with my family at least 3 times a week and never walk away disappointed. It is always busy in there but if you can read the signs and follow the colored footprints on the floor, you can find anything you're looking for without help... And if you go on a good day, you can find lots of neat treasures in the free book bins outside...

I have been coming to this bookstore for a long time. I have watched it grow and expand. I have heard of inflation but I was shocked at the prices of some of the books now. They have gotten so expensive. I picked up a math book and it had $25.00 on it. I remember a day when it would have been $5 to $6. As usual the staff is the strangest group of people and not very friendly. They have their routine down and any interuptions are not appreciated. I still love you Mckay but please watch the prices. Don't fall in that trap. The customers are bringing you the books why soooooooo high?

I went to McKay's in spit of a recent review by Rebecca M in the insider pages. It is quite an interesting place. I was looking for hardcover books and I did find 4 in excellent condition by Patricia Cromwell for only $1.00 each....good deal. Next, I was looking for two books by Jackie Collins - Chances & Lucky - (first & second book in the Lucky Santangelo series) and was happy to find one of each in paperback for 75 cents each. I would love to find them cheap cheap in hardcover but had no luck on that front. I also got some Danielle Steel books. I ended up with a total of 16 books (6 hard-covered and 10 paperbacks) for less than $13.00 including sales tax. So I was pleased with my visit to the store. The "free" bins outside the front of the store were a disapointment. They looked more like two garbage bins, so I didn't even venture to put my hands in the bins.I thought the prices on the CD's and VHS tapes were on the high side as did I find the children's books to be on the high side. But overall, I would definately go back to search out more $1.00 bargin hardcovers and less than $1.00 paperbacks. Any avid book reader would find this place to be a goldmine of cheap reading material.

PROS: bargin $1.00 book shelves, less than $1.00 paperbacks
CONS:

We drove more than an hour to visit McKay at the advise of others. It took us about 90 minutes to find about 60% of well known books we needed at reasonable prices. No children's classics in hardcover. Poor organization with books in cubbies instead of rows (like the adult section). One book was WAY overpriced and exceeded the price of a new one. Another book has a sticker that said half-price.. Nope, just what "their" sticker states (again, used at the same price as new}. Not sure why it would be shelved without removing or marking through the sticker then [duh]. This PB book was literally thrown over the shoulder of the checkout clerk without regard. Counter help is less than friendly, no one smiled or even said hello or thank you. What little other staff I saw was shelving books.. again, no smile, greeting or helpfulness. On the other hand, my son found the three Tolkien movies at a really good price. PC Software section was very pricey.. no MAC software found at all.

Interesting place, but I probably won't go out of my way in the future. Just if we're in the area and willing to "browse". The free books outside were worth a dive.. we came home with more from there than inside.

Legalize: Of course, this is only my personal opinion and may not reflect the opinions of others.....

PROS: large selection of books, decent condition, free book bins!
CONS: busy, even during the week, unpleasant staff, some books over-priced

I've been going to McKays as long as they've been in Chattanooga. It and its sister store in Knoxville are my favorite used book stores. We live in Alabama and don't have anything comparable. I wish they'd open other locations.
The trade credit never expires and they don't limit how you use it other than distinguishing between CDs and DVDs (yellow credit) and everything else (blue credit). Blue credit can't be used to buy CDs and DVDs.
Note: they don't answer their phone, you have to leave a message and let them call you back.

PROS: very liberal trade policies (no library items, no HB books without dust jkt
CONS: crowded, staff is often too busy to help locate items.

We have seen McKays grow from a small shop to a huge store. They take trade ins on books, cds, videos etc. This is a great place for us to find books and resources for our kids and grandkids. They have good prices on gently used books and movies. Great selection!

I LOVE this place! You can buy or sale used books, dvds and cds, even games for a gaming system! I have found very hard to find poetry books here. The staff are really on the ball, they can help you find anything! They also give the most for your used books, dvds,or cds and games. The only con that comes to mine is that they could be a little better organized with the shelving.Thats only because they have so many things I guess! I ,along with several of my family members, shop there all the time!

PROS: Amazing variety of items, great staff
CONS: extremely busy!

Wow, they have a lot of books, CDs, games, movies and whatever else. If youre looking for a cheap PS2 game, or a good used book, look no further. There are so many choices and selection it would take you hours to look through the whole place. Very good prices, and very well organized. You should be able to find anything you need easily. If youre looking for just released stuff, it wont be there yet, but probably soon.

PROS: good prices, many selections

If you want it McKay's will have it.... CD's, used books, Videos, and DVD's. McKay's will give you trade credit or cash for your old items. With easy access off Hwy 153 at Lee Hwy. McKay's is just a short drive from anywhere in Chattanooga. The store is set up so that finding what you want is easy. They have a large home school section and a large childrens area.

PROS: Great parking, location, and hours.
CONS: It is usually crowded. Plan to spend lots of time there.

I have always loved this store. Chris and I have purchased so many used books here and have also sold and traded here. The employees are young and nice. They have a huge romance section, huge craft section and a great kids section. You can find a lot of the new books there too if you hit it right.

If you trade in books, you have to use the trade money for books. Same with the music. I wish they were interchangeable though.

Easy to find, easy to park. You can drop off your books and they will calculate for you while you wait. A fun place to spend a little time.

McKay's Used Books is a treasure waiting to be discovered. Not only do they sell used books, but also CDs, DVDs and video tapes. The offering of books, music and movies is extensive and you never know what you might stumble upon. Books are well organized so that you can easily search what you're looking for and employees are there to help you as well. McKay's is also a good place for trading in old books, CDs and movies. You can either trade them in for cash or store credit. As with most used book stores, you will get more in store credit than in cash, but they offer a fair amount in cash.

My wife took me to this store when we were in Chattanooga for a visit with her family. I was skeptical -- thinking a bookstore is a bookstore. Boy was I wrong. The selection changes constantly because you can sell them your old books, CDs, and DVDs. The place is absolutely huge, and they have practically every type of book imaginable. The prices are great -- and of course they're even better if you trade in some of your used items first. The next time we are in Chattanooga, we are definitely going to spend a couple of hours here.
