The food is great! Probably the best Indian food in Nashville. The chai tea is rich with flavor and wonderful. The space is cramped, loud, and sometimes hard to have a private conversation. The service is slow. Especially on a busy

First off. I believe every Five star rating on this place is bogus. I have personally witnessed every single negative comment that has been posted - over priced lukewarm bland Indian food served on a not so clean plate.
As one person has stated, "how has this place been able to stay in business." I think it is because of there location and you think , "this place must be doing something right to be able to stay in this location." You would do yourself well to stay away. This place can turn you against Indian cuisine and there culture because you will walk away feeling like someone has just stolen money out of wallet! I have had many dining experiences and this has to be my number 1 worst place to eat.

My experiences with this restaurant always seem to be at a contrast to some of the other reviewers. We had a fabulous time tonight and enjoyed the attentive service as well as the excellent food which we were served.

We started with the vegetable samosas. We ordered the vegetable biryani and the vegetable korma, and both were spiced to perfection.

I know this is a sparse review in terms of words, but honestly - the food was excellently prepared, the service couldn't have been better, and we had an excellent time as always.

Plus, if you're trying to save money, I'd recommend going to the restaurant's website. They have printable coupons.

Pros: Attentive service & great food

Cons: Parking is scarce

Great service: They make you feel like you're part of the family.

The best Indian food in town... I should know, I've been studying for MANY years. You won't find better food anywhere. I crave it almost daily.

Try the mango lassi if your food is too spicy. It's a perfect combination... Yummmmm!

As I said above, how does this restaurant stay in business? Does everyone think that because it is in Green Hills, it will be good? Wrong!! I wish I had read the other reviews before dining here! I have eaten Indian food all across the US, in Europe and yes, in India. This restaurant is a sorry excuse not only for Indian cuisine, but for ambiance and service. Basically an all around terrible dining experience! The food is overpriced and exactly as all other negative reviews say, watery, etc... After having a samosa that would have been better from a frozen food section in a grocery store, the dirty plates remained and the main course was brought, with us expecting to continue eating on the same plate. Changing the plate would be the least thing these people could do when you are spending $16.99 for Chicken Vindiloo (that you can get at other Indian restaurnats in Nashville for $10.95). As far as ambiance goes, there is none. The space is tiny, the tables and chairs are out of date and too close to other tables. We could hear the entire conversations of all other four parties in the room. I have never felt this negative about a dining experiece and I feel absolutely ripped off! I am a world traveler and know my stuff, so please do not dine at this restaurant! It does not even rate one star!

When you see $15 for a chicken vindaloo on the menu you should expect something good. Not here; I got an average dish with watery sauce. The garlic naan seemed to be fried pizza base with garlic powder too amply sprinkled over the top. Won't be eating here again.

We LOVE Shalimar in Green Hills! Had a wonderful dinner there last night. Not eating out nearly as often now so when we DO we want it to count!!!.Chicken Tikki Masala is my favorite and the thin crispy bread with yogurt sauce is addictive(pappadan?) I am not going to chain restaraunts.!.Cooking at home more now.. Mango lassis are divine. We always park in the back/plenty of room and BYOB saves a LOT/rather spend on the food than double charged for drinks. They wont even charge us a corking "fee"....sooooo marvelous $12 bottle of wine and fabulous service(attentive but NOT constantly interupting/I hate that/make it a good place for us and now they are open on Sunday we will go there for dinner. Fresh and different food.Never go for med or hot spice though unless very brave:)We like to take friends there when we go out. You never know who you will see there:) Safe Green Hills location.Reading some of the other reviews that are so negative makes me wonder.Never in years have we had a rude or bad experience.I totally respect other peoples opinions but wonder if these are written by competion or something. They sure know how to spell all of the food dishes correctly(I think) ha! just saying........hmmm

Cons: locals know to park in back

This place is very overpriced. The food is bad, bland, over cooked, and just not good. I'll never go there again. All the server did was take us to our seats and put a pitcher of water on the table. Didn't come back to check on us or anything. If I could give it zero stars I would.

Love, love, love Shalimar!

The food is wonderful, particularly the lamb vindaloos. The service is great and everyone is friendly. It's the perfect place for a relaxed but fun dinner date.

The BYOB policy is definitely an advantage.

We visited this restuarant during the X'Mas weekend with a large crowd (14 adults + 3 kids). It was around 2pm and the buffet was on till 2:30. The servers were rude telling us that the cook had already left!!!! In the end since we were hungry we stayed on but we were surprised.
The food selection is less than 50% from a normal Indian buffett in US. One type of rice, one chicken dish, couple of veges and one dessert. FOOD TASTES BAD!!! While we watched they added virtually uncooked chick peas in to the existing dish and mixed it. The Chicken tasted stale and the Nan was bad too.
They made no attempt to treat such a large crowd. The restuarant is very small in size too.
The people there have an attitude and YOU GET ALL THIS FOR $15/-. THIS IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE INDIAN LUNCH BUFFET I've been to. This is a total RIPOFF IN BROAD DAYLIGHT.
TRY ANOTHER PLACE AND SAVE YOUR ENEGERY (AND ANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

This restaurant does not deserve to be rated with even a single star. The food is horrible and lacks variety and COMPLETELY overpriced at $15/- for a lunch buffet. But most of all the staff/management are RUDE and UNPROFESSIONAL and clearly have not heard the phrase "customer is king" . This restaurant needs to be trained on how to treat thier customers with respect since we ARE paying for our food and service.

The authentic South Asian cuisine leaves you wanting more and more every day. Vegetarian options are limited, however, they are cheap and affordable. I really enjoyed my experience there.

Holy Crap------------>a 79% on Health Code Score? Does it go any lower?
- Waiter was irritable when I asked if I could get a combination of chicken and lamb on a grill platter.
-Price are just silly bad compared to similar places
-Portions.....are stupid tiny. (Lamb Vindaloo had about three small pieces of lamb for around $10 + Aloo Gobi $9+ Chicken Vindaloo $14.00 + Sopping wet greasy Garlic Naan= Not enough for two people to eat. Plus, my wife got severe stomach cramps about 10 mins afterward (this was a first)

Been around to 38 states and had Indian cuisine in all of them. This is the absolute worst. Avoid like the plague. Place is tiny and cramped. Will not return for any reason.

The food was super greasy and WAY overpriced. I paid nearly $50 (with a coupon!!!) for a dinner for two to go. The chicken tikka masala was tough and dry, the chana masala had no flavor but lots of grease, and the alu ghobi was limp and watery. Way to much money for poor quality. I could get better chana masala from the microwavable packets at Whole Foods.

Will never go back.

i ate at shalimar tonight with a friend, we both had chicken masala and shared some garlic naan and saag aloo. everything was steaming when it came to our table, and i could tell everything they used was fresh. the service was a little slow but the staff was gracious and accommodating. i have been shying away from indian food for a while, but now i'm not afraid of it... i loved everything i had! i wanted to try a vegetarian entree and some different flavors of naan. there is a lot to choose from!

I work in Green Hills, was starving at 5pm and didn't want to cook my own dinner. I ordered take out from Shalimar and dropped by on my way home. I had ordered Palak Paneer, Channa Masala and Garlic Naan. I was astonished to pay $22 for the teeny-tiny side-order portions of the 2 dishes and some greasy, pizza-bread like thing that didn't remotely resemble any naan I've ever seen. I was so shocked I almost turned around and took it back, but I was so hungry I couldn't find the energy. The Paneer was decent, the Channa Masala I can make better myself and the bread was confusing, awful and disappointing. Naan is a flatbread, chewy in texture and definitely not dripping in oil.

I have dined at hole-in-the-wall Indian restaurants around the world that were far better and have also enjoyed Michelin-starred Indian restaurants in London that were more reasonably priced. What a shame and shame on you Shalimar for such outrageous prices and minimal effort on your part. Never again!

Not only does Shalimar have the best Indian food in town, it is the best delivery, eat-in and ethnic "comfort food" rolled into one! The food is always fresh and piping hot. The Tikka Masala is excellent. At the end of the meal, enjoy a cup of chai. This reviewer never even liked chai until tasting Shalimar's wonderful blend. The staff is FANTASTIC! Everyone is kind and helpful.
Sadly, we are moving from Nashville soon and I honestly don't know what I'll do without my weekly dose of Shalimar!!

I took my husband here for his birthday on February 8, 2008. It was his first time ever having real Indian food, and my second. The food was excellent! We both got something completely different, and made sure to try some appetizers, dessert, and Indian tea as well. We left very satisfied and excited that we found a new place to dine! Beware of the spicy-ness though! My husband thought he would try the HOT level because it couldnt be "that bad." He sure was eating his words! He still ate it all. I got my food on medium heat and it was perfect. We will definitely return.

This place was the worst indian food i have ever eaten in my life. We went to this restaurant with hopes of finding a new place for resonably good indian food. We did not have high expectations, never the less, Shalimar managed to dissapoint us. We ordered a curry dish and a chicken tikka (supposedly they have a tandoori oven). Both were extemely overcooked, and we suspect dipped from the same vat of greasy boiling water. The chicken tikka had an extra helping of luke warm grease, despite which the chicken was almost as dry as cardboard. The one dish that we did enjoy was the saag paneer although it was a bit creamy. To say the dahl was flovorless is an overstatement. The garlic naan tasted more like stale pizza dough and the paratha was overly doughy. We wouldn't return on a bet, and wouldn't recommend it to a hungry dog. My wife was complaining of stomach ailments within fifteen minutes; she think's she's gonna die.

I LOVE Shalimar! It is consistently wonderful every time I go. It's been a personal favorite for years. The food is delicious and the atmoasphere is quiet and unassuming, even though a little bit cramped. The only change I would like to see is Shalimar finally serving wine and beer, if not a full bar.

I was there with my friend for lunch recently, I ordered the Indian bread(Naan) and vegetable curry, the Indian bread was brittle, Indian bread never becomes brittle unless reheated several times, I suspected it not being fresh and questioned the owner, he ignored and said People here like Brittle bread, that was big joke, rather he could have got some fresh ones ..
Nashville has very few good choices of Indian food, Now Shalimar adds to list of Worst indian restaurants following Cusine of India, Sitar..

I have received information that Sitar employees have been going around to different review sites and giving their competitors, especially Shalimar, horrible reviews. I personally know the owner of Shalimar and I can tell you the ingredients come from the best places, such as Indian import stores and fresh produce markets. The price is high because the ingredients aren't processed and the meat comes in fresh every day. It costs a lot for those high quality ingredients and therefore it costs a tiny bit more to eat there (it isn't such a huge deal - just go grab a menu and you'll see). The food is naturally good for you (the chicken soup cured my cold!) and Shalimar has consistently hosted celebrities and even the Mayor of Nashville many times. The owner lives in a mid-sized home and has a family of five - no flashy cars or mansions (proving that the prices aren't unnecessarily high, but are due to the high quality of food and ingredients, not to mention highly trained chefs). Going to Shalimar for lunch or dinner is never a mistake - if you're looking for something different and HEALTHY while having it taste a HECKA GOOD, go to Shalimar!

In the several times that I've been to this restaurant I've enjoyed each one. The service is efficient and the food is delicious. I find that the meals are more bountiful than those at other Indian restaurants in town. I'd like to add that if someone is going to write a review of a restaurant, it should be done in a mature manner. The bad ratings I've seen are titled with childish comments. Of course people are entitled to their opinion and I absolutely respect that, but when displaying it on a website such as this its more helpful to hear criticism that's not full of irrational anger and unnecessary commentary. Facts are all I need.

I read some reviews on this site and thought of trying this restaurant. The day was good until we arrived at this restaurant. I was with some of my university friends. We had the noon buffet. I really wonder how come this restaurant has been rated the best. The quality of food was very bad. The interior was also ugly and didn't appeal me to come here next time. The staff was good but I think they don't clean the interior nicely. There was a kind of smell which gave me a headache, and after having food, I felt like I am gonna v0mit. Then things started going worse and worse. I and one of my other friends fell sick in the evening. Some people here have commented on the quality of ingredients they use and I can tell with challenge that the ingredients used were all inferior and stale, and that probably was the reason we fell sick after eating their food. And they charged a whoopping $14 for that buffet. It's definitely not a place to eat. I will prefer eating at Subway; atleast they have fresh vegetables.

I don't recommend anyone this restaurant. Please stay away from this place.

Beware junta:

I just arrived from nashville and thought of writing my experience with this restaurant. I have been to many indian restaurants in nashville, murfreesboro and huntsville, and Shalimar tops the WORST restaurant I have ever been to.

Food: They have very limited dishes and all the dishes have awful taste. They just have just one variety of rice, 2 varieties of chicken (one dry and one gravy), two vegetables (one gravy and one dry), one appetizer and one dessert. I cannot rate even a single dish to be as average or mediocre. I really felt embarrassed because I was with one of my american friends who has just started eating indian food. He used the word "bland" because it was indeed bland. The desert (gulabjamun) tasted like it was prepared years ago. It was very hard and rubbery.

Price: Way to high ! Not a single penny worth it. (buffet: $13.50 !)

Attitude: RUDE ! I didn't take cold drink and so I told the manager that I didn't have cold drink, and he replied in a rude tone that "cold drink is incuded in the buffet; you have it or you don't have it, you have to pay for that". I was stunned after listening to his tone. He behaved as if he has done some favor to us by letting us dine in his restaurant.

Alternatives: "SITAR - Nashville" for Buffet & "Woodlands - Nashville" for Dinner !!

Please don't try this restaurant; not even for a change. For more information, you can mail me at deepak_nitt@yahoo.co.in

Pros: nothing

Cons: overpriced, bad quality food, bad interior, rude staff, limited dishes

After reading reviews here and in a book on Nashville, we thought this would be the place to go for Indian food. We found the prices to be a bit high, which would be acceptable if the food was also above average, but it was not. The food lacked the wonderful perfume of Indian food - actually it was just about tasteless. There are better Indian food alternatives. (sorry)

Was not impressed at all. Coming from eating indian food in NYC and Boston I was not expecting much from indian food in nashville. But I have to say this is some of the worst indian food I have had especially considering how expensive the food was!! I ordered takeout and I paid $22 for chicken tikka masala, samosa and a nan. This is more expensive then food at some of the nicest indian restaurants in NYC and Boston!! The nan tasted and looked like some store bought pizza dough. The samosa did not have any flavor. The tikka masala is difficult to describe but had a chalky texture to it. I went to another indian restaurant in Nashville and the food there was about 10 times better then the food at Shalimar. And I thought that other restaurant was just average. Don't how so many people have written good reviews for this place. Maybe I just had bad luck. Definitely would not recommend Shalimar especially if you're looking for authentic indian food.

There are some good dishes, and some bad. The biryani is amazing - but its more south indian style. The tikka masala is above average. The only thing you have to watch with their ingredients is the low quality that they sometimes use for spices, food coloring, etc.

My wife and I have been coming here for years now, and it is by far our favorite restaurant. What sets Shalimar apart from the other Indian restaurants in Nashville is the quality of the ingredients. The chicken is all white meat, the food never tastes overly greasy, and the vegetable dishes are great. We always leave feeling great. The other Indian restaruants in Nashville use mostly dark meat that tastes overly processed. Shalimar is not cheap, but it's worth every dime.

My only experience at Shalimar was disappointing! To start out, the hours on the door were wrong, so I went twice just to actually get there when it was open. Then we sat in very crowded quarters with a table too small for our food and two couples virtually on top of us! Awful! The food was good, but the waitress told me that "we would never be allowed to eat our food like that at home" because I think she though I was going to start eating out of the serving bowl instead of putting it on my plate (which I wasn't). How rude! Our bill was very expensive on top of all that. I never want to go back and now that I have found Sitar, why should I? Except to maybe give them one more chance.

The food is great and the service is excellent. I like Shalimar Indian Restaurant because they are nice to other Indians that dine there. There are few Indian restaurants in Nashville that are rude to other Indian customers (will not mention). These other Indian restaurant do not seem to acknowledge that Indian customers are providing business for them, but Shalimar and few others have exceptional customer service. The only problem with this resturant is the cost and parking, but eveything else is excellent, especially the food.

After reading a few of the reviews, I felt it neccessary to share my own. I have been frequenting Shalimar for several years now, and the food is exceptional. My favorite dish is the Chicken Tikka Masala, it is always divine...the service is superb- the atmosphere romantic, and cozy. Other Indian restaurants in Nashville are adequate, but once I discovered Shalimar- I've yet to return to any of the others in town.

If you want good Indian food, don't bother with Shalimar. Head to Sitar. Shalimar is over priced for mediocre food with small portions.

When I read the review other people left I was SHOCKED! I thought this was the worst Indian food I've ever eaten. My dish contained spinach and it tasted like the frozen generic stuff you buy at your local grocery store. To top it off the meal was only warm, like it had been sitting out a while. The service was average and the meal was too pricy for what I got. If you want good Indian food go to the Cruisine of India.

Having frequented most of Nashville's "top" restaurants, I always fall back to Shalimar as one of my very favorite dining experiences. The food is addictive and the service is wonderful. One of my favorite aspects of this restaurant is the ambiance- it's in a tiny space which gives it so much character and warmth- and the family that owns/runs the restaurant is kind and sincere to all the guests. BYOB is an added benefit to Shalimar as there is no corking fee. It is an restaurant that all should experience!

Shalimar is one of my favorite restaurants in Nashville, partly because the food is so good and partly because the people who own it and work there are so incredibly nice. My girlfriend and I walk in and they automatically start fixing our samosas, which, by the way, are fantastic. I've tried the chicken curry and the tandoori chicken, both of which are very good. The best dish, in my opinion, though, is the vegetarian dish Malaie Kofta-I order it practically every time I go. The basmati is great and the cucumber raita is wonderful. Don't forget that Shalimar is, curiously enough, BYOB, so don't forget to get wine before coming-The Wine Shoppe at Green Hills on Abbott Martin is great and very close by. Also, you get up and pay up front when you finish--it took us a while to figure that out!!
