I have taken my animals to Dr Nix and his associates for over 8 years, since we moved to the area. I cannot say enough good things about them, they truly are lifesavers. I have many animals, and Dr Nix and his crew have seen us through kidney failures in old cats, urinary blockages, surgeries, blood disorders, epilepsy, and the inevitable aging friends who need a little help out of this world and into the next.

They are unfailingly professional, kind, and caring. The costs may seem steep but they never push for more than you can afford, though they will advocate for the best treatment possible. Dr Nix and his staff have gone above and beyond for me when I needed them, and I will be forever grateful for the care my animals and I have received. This area is very very lucky to have such a clinic!

Dr. Nix, Dr. Thompson and staff have been our animal caretakers and doctors for years. We cannot speak highly enough of everyone there. Most recently, our oldest little f/m terrier went in for a teeth cleaning and routine checkup & was found to have too much protein in her urine. That was last Nov. Dr. Nix not only diagnosed this very accurately but has prolonged her precious life past an average maybe 6 months. We were overwhelmed and called everywhere wanting to pursue a kidney transplant. Not because we have money. We are just like every other hard working couple in E TN. But, because she brings us happiness and our granddaugter such joy. Which is why we got our dogs to begin with. She wanted one before her daddy left for Iraq. We ended up with 3. Then, we bought a special treat at Walmart thinking they were ok. We didn't read the pkg carefully enough. Pkg looked safe. Chicken Jerky Treats. It may have been just what caused the disease! We did it to her! So, we told Dr. Nix we wanted to talk to a college about transplant and he was so supportive and willing to do anything he could to help. And, he has! Transplants are only about 70% successful in canines and we also go to UT who found her case highly unusual because of a varied range in lab results. The numbers were not typical for what they normally saw. She is a unique case. And, we see a nutritionist/physician who writes the formula for our girl's food needs and then it goes to the company and they send it to Dr. Nix and we pick it up at his office. Her blood and urine tests need to stay within certain levels and she gets water IVs to flush her kidneys as well. If you didn't know-you couldn't tell a thing is wrong with her. She's energetic, friendly, happy and has a beautiful shiny coat. And, she loves Dr. Nix, the mere mention of his name and she is ready to go and can't wait for the car to pull off the highway at his office. The prices there are as comparable as any other vet we have ever used anywhere. We haven't taken a vacation in six years, until this past May, and we decided to take our 3 terriers to the mountains for few days. She had been through so much (test, needle sticks, IVs, etc). They loved it and we were thrilled to be along with them! This staff cared for my daughter and my mom's shepherd Janna, my son's lab Sheba, and now our "kids." We place all our trust and confidence in the world in Dr. Nix and his staff. We love and adore him and appreciate him and them all so much. We have not given up on transplant should things start going the other way. A donor has always been a full sibling. Our girls are half sisters. We have yet to have the test to see if they would be compatible. And, the college we have been communicating with has given us an answer on whether they would be willing to try should they be. I know this lays heavily on knowing the help and support we will ultimately get from "their Dr. Nix and staff."

South Rhea Animal Hospital may be the most expensive of the two in the county but you can't put a price on the health and well being of a beloved family member. I have seen first hand the caring and professionalism of the doctors and staff and it is a wonderful thing to be a part of. Yes sometimes health care is expensive but let's face it nothing comes cheap in this world anymore. The quality of care and understanding at this clinic may surprise a lot of people. Give it a try. You may find that smiling faces and caring hearts may be the difference in your choice for your veterinarian.

We moved new to this area and selected South Rhea as our vet about a year ago. We have received the most professional care and great kindness to our dogs. Dr.Nix has seen us on both routine and sudden calls as our Labs tend to eat things they should not. His willingness to share his own personal experiences with his pets has been insightful as well.

The costs for services here are comparable with what we were paying for a top notch vet in another state. We had a very bad experience with treatment of another pet by the vet north of Dayton and that underscored our selection of the South Rhea Animal as our vet of choice. We would recommend this practice to others.

I am Dr. Jeffrey Nix and I am the owner of South Rhea Animal Hospital. First of all, thank you to all who have taken time to review, good or bad. It is this process that allows all businesses to be accountable for their actions. No veterinarian that I know is in the business to intentionally cause harm to any pet. Medicine is an imperfect science and we are all human, including the doctors. Sometimes diagnoses are difficult to obtain when we are not able to ask the patient directly where they hurt or what symptoms affect them the most. If we ,as doctors, don't sometimes explore other options, then what happens when we misdiagnose? Will the pet be harmed or die or do we have the option to wait and see? The doctor and staff are sometimes placed in a precarious position of doing enough to diagnose the problem but risk making the bill too high for the owner, or not do enough because the owner can't or won't spend the money for diagnostics and in the process, compromise the one he/she has taken an oath to protect;the pet. Veterinary medicine has evolved tremendously in the last 15-20 years and it now takes a lot more resources for the average veterinary hospital to provide the high quality diagnostics and treatments that today's pet owners demand for their family members. Unfortunately for everyone, the advancements do not come inexpensively. As a business owner, I am accountable to my client or customer. I would welcome anyone who has a problem with our hospital to discuss it with me. I cannot fix what I do not know is broken. I would invite those that have had a negative experience to give us another chance. My staff is an extension of myself and yes, sometimes they will make mistakes also. However, we all strive to make your visit a pleasant one and when we fall short, we would appreciate the opportunity to try again. All we ask is to let us (me) know that we have failed and see what we can do to correct the problem. Each complaint is a chance for us to improve.Thank you for your time in reading this post.Dr. Jeffrey Nix

I have taken my pets to South Rhea Animal Hospital for over 7 yrs and cannot express how grateful I am for the wonderful love and care that they have received each and every time I have walked through the door. The staff have welcomed me with a warm smile and my animals with a friendly scratch behind the ear, and they have always demonstrated professionalism and compassion in each circumstance that I have encountered. I have personally witnessed each of the doctors as well as the staff give of their own time and money to help rescues, humane societies, and every stray they find along the way. This group gives loving of themselves on a daily basis---I am truly grateful for the medical excellence that South Rhea offers----we are fortunate to have such expertise in a small rural community! THANK YOU DR. NIX, DR. SHERLE AND DR. AMANDA for all you do for your clients and your community. GOD BLESS!

I took my kitten mittens to this horrible place and it was perfectly healthy before I took her in. However after a routine checkup they told me she needed different medicines for fleas, worms, etc. they administered the medicine and kept her for observation. I returned to South rhea animal hospital hours later only to find she was dead. they told me she had an "allergic reaction" to the medicine, and still tried to make me pay ! Don't take your pets here unless you are ready to part from them forever! They Kill Pets!

First of all, I would like to say something nice.... Nice building, very clean. But on the other hand... SO Expensive, do they not care about time? My time is very important and they take FOREVER for routine things! (yes, even when you have an appointment). They act like you couldnt possibly know what might be wrong with your animal. Instead of listening to you, they go down every other avenue for treatment until they finally get to the diagnosis that you suggested but couldn't treat at home. I hate to be mean, but I cant stand to be overcharged, treated inferior & left to sit and wait in a near empty hospital on someone who is probably goofing off in the back!

Nearly new hospital, hasnt been built long. They, however, are very expensive. We go to the animal hospital in north rhea county. It is older, and I am not sure how up to date their facilities are, but for just regular checkups/shots, they are very affordable. So I wouldnt recommend going to the newer one, when you have the option of going to the other one.
