We have worked in Ethiopia, know (and crave) Ethiopian food. We were in the States on our 40th Wedding Anniversary, so drove from Chattanooga to N'ville just to eat at the Awash. HOW did we learn about it? I called up an Ethiopian import business (in Nashville) and asked them. They told me Awash was THE BEST - not the prettiest, the best. The owner/ cook is a delightful old guy! Yes, the place is tiny, but hey, are you a GOURMANDIZER or a POSER?
We live & work in London now, but our daughter & son-in-law are in C'nooga. We just got off the phone with them
(8 July 2008) and told them about the Awash. They'll be there Friday night. Meet 'em there! Josh & Libba.
Oh... the enjera is made from teff, not rice. It's the real stuff. We had Doro Wot, Tibbs, Veggies, etc.
GO FOR IT! - Johnny Long, World Harvest Mission, London, UK (Yep, we have really good Eth. food here too!)

Pros: FOUR THUMBS UP

Cons: Go slow... it's not a flashy place - hard to spot.

.

bad (dangerous) neighborhood. the only available parking is in a dark alley behind the building. When you walk in, there are 4 small tables cramped in a narrow isle right next to the pots and pans of the kitchen where the cook chops unions close enough and visible to make your eyes water. If the food was good, I would have come back for take out, but come on,, no menu, no drinks, I felt like I walked into someones private home kitchen and it was an uncomfortable feeling.

Cons: bad example of ethiopian anything

You don't have to leave Nashville to have an international dining experience! Awash is in a "challenging" neighborhood and might be difficult to spot, but the food is delicious and the dining a real experience. It's just a hole in the wall, but when's the last time you scooped up your food with injera "bread". If this place was in West End and served alcohol, folks would be clammering. It's true international dining!

Sure all the Ethiopian Resteraunts in Nashville are good, the service is good at all of them. What makes this different...simply the food IS the best, Sigue the cook (have I spelt this right) just has that extra something. The place is teeny tiny and dont go expecting a romantic night out. Its a cafe and the steady stream of people coming in for take out know how good it is. We love Ethiopian everything and AWASH food rocks. Yes we have been to Ethiopia!
