Knoxville Institute Of Hair is a school NOT Salon Visage
by pamela k.
I must say to those of you who went to a school for a professional service and then complain about the time and money spent..THEY ARE STUDENTS..so get over it.
I did need color and perm education after I finished HOWEVER I am a BARBER therefore I did receive the education I needed for my field.

Ruined my wife's hair after over 4 hours.
by Colin M.
Very unprofessional. Instead of telling my wife they couldn't use the 40 developer as she requested (because she's had her hair done countless times by others), they used 20 because it is state law that student's can't use above that. Although she insisted, they assured her 20 would work, saying that theirs was stronger than consumer products. Well my wife was right and they were dead wrong and after the first process she looked like a clown. Now, she has an orange crown, a bright blonde stripe on the back of her head that they missed the second time, she is late for work, spent $75, and was almost crying when she got home. I called and they refused to consider a refund, asking her to come back in so they can look at it. Ha! There is no way we would touch this place with a 40 foot pole! We wish we had spent another $35 and had it done at a real salon. Horrific!

Cosmetology School
by K. A.
I had a great experience here! I had instructors who encouraged me and helped me to learn. I had never really done well in school and felt real at ease in this school. Everyone was always helpful from instuctors to the office staff. The office staff helped me with all my
finances and with the scholarships that they offer it made it a lot less expensive to attend than the other schools in Knoxville. I just appreciate all the people who have helped me and now have opened my own shop which is doing really well. So I just say THANK YOU to all the wonderful people at KNOXVILLE INSTITUTE OF HAIR DESIGN AND THE CLIENTS THERE!

Ok, it's hard for me to write this, because I want to be fair. I started the school in April '05 to get my nail tech. license. My mentor went to the same school in the 70's and it hadn't changed much. The price of my student nail kit was $600, i could have saved about $500 if I had bought the stuff separately. The school is split into 2 sections: Barber and Cosmetology. Barber side focuses on the quick, basic buzz cut.. the Cos side focuses on cuts, perms, colors and nails. The A/C didn't work on the Cos side, and with 5-6 dryers on, it was miserable on that side, in the summer. In the mornings, the focus was on the theory part of the course. Most weeks, we were lucky if we got the required 4-hours of theory. Our instructor gave us the answers to the test and advised us to study the answers. The other 33 hours per week were spent working on "busy" work or working on clients. I felt the school was more concentrated on making the money from our services than teaching. All I had to do was get through the required hours and pass the state exam. Honestly, I am confidant I could have passed the exam with a 3-day course. However, this is the state law, not the school's fault. I don't believe any of my services were ever "supervised" by an instructor, as claimed. I had a hard time finding one when I needed one, actually. Now that I am "in the real world", I realize how little I know and have to take additional classes by the manufacturers, which aren't cheap!
To sum it up, I spent way too much money to swelter and slave for a substandard education. I enjoyed working with the students and most of the clients I worked with, but could not imagine spending 10 months there to be licensed to do hair. But they have been at it for 30+ years, they must be doing something right!
PROS: OK place to get a cheap, basic cut; only Barber school around
CONS: Bad place to get an education
