As an unsuspecting traveler visiting Memphis for a week on business, I decided I would celebrate the passing of mid-week and dine at a "quality" steakhouse. I narrowed my search down to two: Butcher Shop or Majestic Grille. I gambled.. and I lost. I expressed to the waiter that I was having trouble deciding between the rib-eye and the New York strip. He recommended rib-eye. Right on buddy.. If you like your steak 60-70% fat then this is the place for you. After I finished the meal he saw my plate and the war zone created by my attempts to find a legitimate piece of meat and had the audacity to comment that "maybe I should choose the New York strip next time." Next time? Yea.. probably not. If you are in Memphis and looking for a good steak please dine anywhere except the Butcher Shop.

Cons: The Steak

Butcher Shop is one of those places that my mind doesnt automatically jump to when we're heading out for a steak. Usually its between Ruths Chris and Folks Folly (and Ruths Chris usually wins - they have better sides) But sometimes we're burnt out on RC and sometimes we just dont want to drive that far. Thats when the Butcher Shop usually pops into my head. The steaks are good...I have never prepared my own. Like some others have said - whats the point in that?!?! The spinach artichoke dip is, in my opinion, the best in the city. Even better than Houstons. Yup. The potatoes....the ones served with cheese in a gratin dish? Oh. My. Goodness. They are *so* good....skip the baked potato and try them! We go to the one on G-Town Pkwy and they have patio seating. Also another draw when the weather is nice and you want to sit outside!

Arrived and was quickly seated. Ordered beer and soft drink. Informed by surly manager that one grill was down and that no customer steak preparation on the other grill was possible. Left.

Pros: nice atmosphere, good location

Cons: surly management

The staff is friendly and they sit you promply but the food is not that great. they give you a choice to cook your own steak or have it cook by the chef (cooking my steak, is't that why I went out to eat in the fist place, because I did not want to cook) neadless to say we had the food cook by the chef and it was tastesless. I do not recomend this place.

My gf and I could have eaten the spin dip and cajun shrimp alone and been happy, but our filets were too good to ignore. This place has Folk's and R. Chris beat hands down. It's just a good, basic steakhouse without fuss or formality. They also don't charge extra for 'loaded' baked potatoes like some other places in town. Our waiter was excellent and we never had to ask for a thing - he also didn't bug us either.

I have lived here all my life and finally went here - it was an awesome experience. The atmosphere is warm and inviting; the staff was attentive but not overwhelming. We sat near the grill and got to watch them prepare the food which was interesting. I ordered grilled chicken breast (it came with 2 pieces so I had leftovers for lunch) and it was the best chicken I've ever eaten. The salad bar is adequate but you have to ask for bacon bits and cheese from the kitchen. Prices are average for a steakhouse. The other neat thing is the meat counter - you see them pick out your meat before they cook it.

I have visited Memphis three times, and eaten at both locations. Each time, I've ordered the 14 oz. Filet, eaten every delicious bite, and have yet to pick up a steak knife. It's that tender! I've had far less quality steaks elsewhere for far more money. Nobody serves a 14 oz. filet, and those that come close charge a whole lot more! Two weeks ago, I visited the Dallas location, and the steak was just as awesome. Worth the trip from anywhere in the country!

I wouldn't take the entire family, but it would be good for a night out on the town. Could get pricey. The service was good, but it is extremely noisey and you do sit close together. You can oick out your own steak, I like that.

Not sure why this restaurant is listed under West Memphis but in any case, I have very fond memories of this downtown restaurant--sorry to hear quality is not the same. They used to have great steaks at a very reasonable price I though. Fun place--service just so-so though.

The Butcher Shop Steak House offers an environment that is comfortable for all, be it a high school prom night date or the setting for closing a business deal. They offer the opportunity to cook your own steak, which you get to pick out, so if there is a problem with your meat it is your own fault.

The best steak house that I have found in Memphis! Though I must admit that I have not been to Folk's Folly, Memphis is lucky to have a restaurant of this caliber. There are not many others. Excellent steaks that they cook properly. You can select your own steak and cook it yourself if you choose. The salad was fresh, the ambience was that of a classic American steak house, in my opinion. We ate at the one on Germantown Road.

It depends on which Butcher Shop you go to. The one in Cordova is great but the downtown one leaves much to be desired. The downtown one was the original one but it's gone way downhill. The one in cordova has a better menu, the food is cooked better, and it's a great atmosphere. It's also well priced. My review applies to the one in Cordova and not the one downtown.

My boss and I were in Memphis for business and our partner, also a local resident, took us to the Butcher Shop Steak House for dinner. We both had the filet and there are no words to describe the piece of meat that we both enjoyed. If my car had no broken down during my honeymoon I would have taken my new bride here for dinner. I haven't stopped talking about my experience yet. This is a place worth dropping a few pennies at. I look forward to going back.

I recently spent two of the worst restaurant hours of my life at the Butcher Shop downtown. The food was okay but much too expensive for what you get. The salad bar was sparse as well as being a server yourself situation. The steak was overcooked and underseasoned. (I chose not to cook my own.) But the worst part was the service. Never have I been so displeased with the service and then forced to leave a 17% gratuity anyway. Needless to say, Never Again!

Everytime I visit Memphis, I make it the point to have dinner at the Butcher Shop Steak House. I have never had a bad experience. The beef is so tender it almost melts in your mouth.
I visit Memphis on business 1 or 2 times per year, and this on of the highlights of the trip.

I recently had a New York Strip here and it was dissapointing. I did not cook it myself but opted for the kitchen to do it. We had a party of five on a slow Saturday night and they still managed to screw up three of the 5 steaks. All horrendously overcooked. My steak was not only overcooked but it was tasteless. Not some place that I would come to again. The appetizers were unexciting and harshly ordinary. The staff was nice but did not go out of there way to make it a good dinner. No one was really all that excited with their meal.

THIS IS A MUST EAT AT RESTAURANT!

I ATE HERE IN AUGUST '02. IT WAS MY SECOND VISIT TO MEMPHIS. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE.

IT'S NOT MUCH ON AMBIANCE, HOWEVER, THE STEAKS MAKE UP FOR IT!

THEY ALSO GIVE YOU THE OPTION TO PREPARE YOUR OWN STEAK.

My husband and I came to Memphis Tennesse to elope. On the second night in Memphis we decided we wanted a good steak dinner. Not being from Memphis we asked some locals where we should go and they referred us to the Butcher Shop. The name didn't sound too appealing, but we changed our minds once we go inside. It was a fun evening and the food was delicious. If you are looking for a good time as well as a good meal, the Butcher Shop is the place to be.
