I also have a gift certificate to this business. Really disappointed they closed. I thought surely they moved to a better location but this doesn't appear to be true. Guess I'll be contacting the BBB too!

This place closed down just a few days after they were selling gift certificates. I have two gift certificates gifted to me that I cannot use. I have friends that have gift certificates they cannot use. This is a very unethical way to do business. The only recourse I've found is to contact the Better Business Bureau to file a complaint.

This company does not even deserve one star!
Here is my story...
My best friend purchased a massage for me for my birthday 6 months ago from Essential Therapy on West End, and I was going to purchase the same massage for her when we both went to the spa together. A week before we wanted the massage, I kept calling the number to Essential Therapy. No one answered and the website was down, so I drove by the location and people were moving things in and out of the building.
A woman explained to me that Essential Therapy had gone and they were a new company moving in that was IN NO WAY AFFILIATED WITH ESSENTIAL THERAPY. I knew that my gift certificate was no good to this new company, but she said, "If you come here and purchase the same massage for your friend, I will grant your gift certificate here too." She took my name and number and put me on the schedule for the date that I wanted. At the time she didn't have any cards or brochures, but PROMISED me that she would call me back in two days to confirm my appointment. SHE NEVER DID. So I drove back by the same office and the building was even more empty than the day I went by and spoke with her! I said forget it and looked up spas on the internet.
So I called Agagio Spa and they gladly accepted my gift card (which they lost money on) and I paid for my friend's massage. They were excellent! I would recommend them any day and will return if I am in Nashville again!
From what I found out, Essential therapy was selling gift cards like two days before they closed their business! That's terrible! I'm pretty sure that the lady that I spoke with was the daughter of the owner of Essential Therapy that is opening up this new place in the same space. I understand my gift certificate was from 6 months ago, but that is still terribly unethical what they did. And why wouldn't you call back a potential customer especially when you put them on your appointment book???!?!?!? I'm sure I don't know the whole story, but this is what I found out and I want everyone to know that ADAGIO spa was great and worked with me!!! Essential Therapy deserves a negative rating in my book.

I have been going to Essential Therapy for years but have never had a pedicure there. I typically go to local nail spas for pedicures which run about $32. I scheduled an hour long pedicure to relax & be pampered considering I am 8 months pregnant. I was so looking forward to the experience and most of all....the foot/leg massage portion. The pedicure did not last an hour, the nail tech talked to me the entire time & I recieved no massaging!!! Such a bummer.....Next time I will pay half of what they charge & get way better service. The entire experience felt rushed & like corners where cut......waste of money!

For the past 2 years I have seen Jerri once a month and she is the most AMAZING massage therapist ever. She talks to you during the massage, which I admit was a little weird at first, but I really appreciated it because she explained everything that she was doing and why. I recently moved from Nashville and I find that knowing what Jerri was doing has been helpful for me to explain to other therapists what I need. I live in Manhattan now and have so far been unsuccessful in finding anyone who even compares to Jerri.... She is the absolute best!

I was very disappointed with this place. The location in great! When I got there I was shocked to have to change into my robe IN THE BATHROOM! How uncomfortable! I was cold during my facial and my massage was not deep enough. Not to mention, it's one of the most expensive places in nashville. I will go somewhere else from now on, it's not worth it.

I went for the first time a few weeks ago. I was not very impressed. I had a relaxation soak, which was over priced and nothing more than water and scented bath salts. I was forgotten and left in the soak which then caused my massage to start late. There was no compensation. The massage was o.k., but I have had better massages in nashville. I feel that the intention behind this business is not to take care of people, but more focused on how much money they can make.

The first time I visited Essential Therapy was when I received a gift certificate for a 60 minute massage. I have been in love ever since! I have had 3 different massage therapists (because I have to schedule a massage when I have time, and am not able to schedule based on the availability of a specific therapist) and all of them have been incredible. Each therapist was courteous. If I didn't want to talk, they didn't talk. If I wanted medium pressure, I was given medium pressure. Each time I go the Essential Therapy, I purposely arrive at least 15-20 minutes early just so I can relax more in the tranquility room. I love the atmosphere, music, and staff. I have recommonded many friends to Essential Therapy and I will continue to do so. I love Essential Therapy!

As my gift to my bridesmaids I surprised them all and brought them here the day before my wedding for facials and massages. Essential's was EXCELLENT. When I first began talking with them they were happy to meet my budget, gave me several suggestions, and worked us all in. Unfortunately, due to out of towners who got a little lost, we were about 15 minutes late but the staff at Essentials just worked with it and got us in there flawlessly and no ones services were cut short.
The Japanese relaxation room is one of the best "waiting rooms" in the area. You are whisked in, given and comfy robe, and able to sit down on the mattress like couches instead of waiting in a plastic folding chair like other spa's. There is even a sauna you can sit in while you wait. The staff is friendly and all of the services are amazing.
My day with my bridesmaids could not have been any better and it wouldn't have been as wonderful if we went to any other spa in Nashville. They are truly the best around.

Essential Therapy introduced Nashville to the benefits of a relaxing day spa experience, years before day spas were so prevalent. I have always been a fan and stop by whenever possible, just to soak up the atmosphere. Perhaps they are experiencing some issues with change due to the proliferation of new spas in town and the employee turnover that goes with that. It is a very competitive business these days. Beware negative reviews from borababe and a few other angry people. They have also given other local spas negative reviews. Perhaps they are just negative, unhappy people and need to look to themselves, not a day spa for healing.

If you are looking for a great massage to relax and de-stress....go to Patrick. He has a great touch and his demeanor and professionalism are # 1. I can't say enough how great his massage was and I would definately go back and book only with him.

Essential Therapy has some really good things going for it. First, it has a great store with great products. When you come in for the first time, you can expect to fill out a very professional looking form complete with a drawing of the human body allowing you to mark where you don't want to be massaged. Once you leave the store, they have their "Tranquility room" which is just that. This, to me, has been the best part. It's very Asian themed with raised wooden slat flooring, cozy futons with lots of pillows, dimly candlelit room, lighted aquariums and great Asian themed music. It's beautiful, cozy, and VERY relaxing. Sounds great so far, huh? The problem that I have had with Essential Therapy is that I've had 3 different masseurs and they ALL talked throughout nearly my entire massage. One talked about how far her commute was, one talked about wanting a new job, and I forget what the other talked about, but she talked. When I go for my massage, I want to relax and the ONLY thing I want to talk about is what type of pressure I want during my massage. So, I think they are worth a trip, but you may want to ask them to let their hands do the talking. .

I went in for a massage and a seaweed treatment. As the seaweed was being applied, I lifted my arm to offer my therapist some assistance in putting the seaweed on my body. In the process, I accidentially got a little bit of it on his shirt. After that happened, he yelled (yes, yelled) YOU GOT SEAWEED ON MY SHIRT - DO NOT TRY TO HELP ME PUT THIS ON. So, needless to say, my relaxing (yea right) massage was over for me. I was embarrassed and ready to get out of there as fast as possible. I will never return to this spa. Maybe they should get some therapists that know how to help people actually relax. After reading some of the other posts on this page, I guess a lot of people are feeling this way about this spa.

I've just moved to Nashville, and I'm looking for a spa where I can go regularly. My first experience was not fabulous. I'd heard this place has been around for a long time. That was pretty evident when I arrived for my massage appointment. The place seemed sort of dingy and old, and not very well maintained. I was taken to the spa area which is behind the store, where I was ushered into the bathroom to change my clothes. Kind of weird, but oh well. The spa attendant was not very professional. Her demeanor and dress were not at all what I'm used to in a spa environment. Maybe they're trying to be cool and relaxed, but to me, it felt lazy. The massage was good; nothing special, but the therapist was sweet and kind of shy. Of course, I'm not using my real name, as it is really nobody's business WHO I am, but I will be trying other spas and reporting my findings. If anyone out there has a suggestion for me, please let me know. Thanks

I must say this experience was less than expected. Upon entering the spa I approached the counter, waited for the lady get up from her work area to check me in. She seemed disturbed by my presence. The manicurist was pleasant but very but nervous. Not what I expected at a full service spa. The massage was less than expected! The floor was dirty, when I took my shoes off I could feel grit on the floor. The ceiling is stained from water and the noise from outside was bad. The massage itself could have been more intense but at this point I didn't care anymore. The 90 minute massage I requested while on the phone with Jamie was over in 60 minutes. When I ask why my massage was cut short the therapists response was, not again! At this point I didn't care anymore.

Essential Therapy was so important and helpful to me. I went there for one year with regularity each week or every other week. The staff was wonderful. I looked forward to the entire experience. I have physical challenges from MS and they treated me with repect and gave me breaks on prices. E.T. helped me physically and emotionally.
Then things started changing. In maybe March I was called about two hours before my appointment to tell me that my massage therapist had been dismissed. Why?
I do not think the owners are being good to their employees. I was very dissappointed in being called with such short notice to tell me my appt was cancelled by them. I felt I had been dismissed as well.

It could be such a great place. I previously thought so.
Thank you,
SusanShockley

I've been a customer at Essential Therapy for approximately 3 years. Work is very stressful; knowing a massage appointment was booked kept me smiling. The spa is experiencing major turnover issues. Over the last 6-8 months, the rate of turnover is stressing me (the customer) out! My last 3 appointments were rescheduled due to this problem. Serious management issues, caution!

My massages here have been very enjoyable and I really feel that I get my money's worth. However, be ON TIME for your appointment or your session will definitely be cut short. If it's your first time, BE EARLY so you can fill out your paperwork without cutting into your massage time. Besides, when you're early, you can watch the fish in the meditation room or relax in the sauna. Robes are provided for lounging between sessions; but plus-sized people should bring a robe from home, as the one provided will not be generous enough for fuller-figured folks. The therapists are well-trained and will tailor the touch to your taste. I just wish their "store" had more interesting products. Otherwise, I've been very satisfied at Essential Therapy, and I will continue to get massages there.

I recently got the "Power Cleanse" facial at Essential Therapy, which is supposed to be a 90 minute facial. I also got my brows waxed. The total time in and out was less than an hour, including wait time. I would have complained, but I didn't notice what time it was until I left. Admittedly, I was 10 minutes late for my appointment, but I don't think that is an excuse to cut my facial short by more than half an hour.

When purchasing several packages, make sure you ask if they can be used for other services, i.e. if you've purchaced a facial gift certificate and one day decide that you want a massage instead, they will not allow you to change it. You are stuck with the facial and must purchase a massage separately. It's a way for them to get more money. Other spa's I've been to will accomodate the client to make the "client" happy and want to come back and recommend the spa.

I got a gift certificate, and was scheduled with Noelle. Noelle comes with nearly 10 years of experience, and a wide variety of therapies. Her healing hands were amazing. Noelle is not only a great therapist, she is very intuitive and has a wonderful spirit about her. Her Craniosacral treatment was by far the best I've had in years. If you're headed here for massage, ask for Noelle.

Facials are wonderful! Plus, they didnt try to sell me into a different line of skin care.
Massages are wonderful; I get one once a month now.
The staff is great!
I would highly recommend Essential Therapy!

If you're wanting a good massage, there are lots of places in town that are cheaper than Essential Therapy. But if you want a spa sort of experience with lots of little extras, this is the place to go. Those with claustrophobia may want to look elsewhere, as the massage rooms are small.

Book a relaxing soak, a facial or a massage here, and plan to spend some quiet time before and afterwards to complete your peacefulness. All you need to bring is your stress and a willingness to unwind. They'll pamper you! Any body treatment you request will be given in the utmost of professionalism and I have been coming here for years; however, I suggest you ask specifically for a massage from Wes Waters. He has incredible energy and wonderfully warm healing hands. Tell him Leslie sent you!!!

It took awhile to get adjusted to the almost complete darkness, & I kept thinking I was going to bump into something or stub my toes. My massuese was Wes and he did an incredible job! I'm never going to a female masseuse again!!!! I've had a number of massages at different places, but never from a man.He explained everything, and even walked me out (2 hours later) and talked to me about school and coming back. The body soak was ok, but the tub was tiny, and the music (Enya) was ok to start with, but when it changed to lightning & chirping birds, I became far more irritated than relaxed. The facial was so-so, but the massage took the cake!

Pros: Great massage, not too crowded, good service

Cons: bad music (too loud), too dark, robe with rope tie
